It was a cut-off piece that I didn't know what to do with, so I sent it to Phil because everyone knows that Phil will turn ANYTHING! And, oh man, did he ever! Stunning piece, Phil. Absolutely stunning!
@@christinemiller7238 You are welcome! I am not sure, now, if I *sent* it to him or if I *handed* it to him when he visited. It's been awhile and my memory is what I forget with. 😉
Well, Phil can actually donate one piece someday. Smithsonian can keep it for a display on crafts from time to time with credit to Phil or present it as a gift to some worthy or sell it for fundraising in the gift shop to somebody who will treasure it. Either outcome is a benefit..
This proves it, you CAN put a square peg on a round bowl! You do such a good job showing us the art of restraint, no one can make texture the way a tree does it on its own.

OR, I can just drill a 5/16 hole into them and say: "What would Phil do?" and see what happens. Thanks, Phil! It's an uniquely beautiful piece!
Phil, you are truly the Michelangelo of wood. Your ability to both retain and reveal beauty is rare. As an artist myself, it’s honestly moving and humbling to watch. “The sculpture is already complete within the marble block, before I start my work. It is already there, I just have to chisel away the superfluous material.” ― Michelangelo

“It’s a nice piece” says Phil, the master of the understatement. The camera placement, the commentary (“it’s not for your Cheerios, it’s an art piece”), the building excitement as the shape is revealed, like a sculptor with a block of marble. This was not only your best piece. It was like a feature film! Well done!!!
Watching you deal with this difficult conundrum was like listening to Miles Davis make a masterpiece from his 80's jazz bands less experienced musicians. They were rough around the edges, however Miles heard what they did and masterfully brought a melody to its beautiful conclusion. Just like you did Phil.
You really are the “wood whisperer!” You seem to be able to coax something wonderful out of the most challenging pieces of wood. It’s amazing how you see things in the wood that most people would just burn or throw away.
Thank You Phil, Thank You Dave, Calmwood Creations.... Very few woods come close to the beauty of a polished/finished piece of Maple Burl. Include with that burl the bark and the natural contours of the wood. Does not get much better. Phil you made a beauty! It is small, simple and beautiful with all of the bells & whistles it takes to create a unique piece. Too cool Phil & wonderful show from start to stop. TM

Never have I screamed at my screen to turn off the lathe and please just use the chisel. Until now. Thank you for doing it this time, always a downright thriller. I would not trust myself, the tool or the machine enough to cut tenons all the way like you do. Thanks for the great demonstration of skill, wit and impeccable taste!
I'm the first to use this technique. The first time I was just trying to get the nub as small as possible with the intention to set it on my bench and cut it off with a chisel. Then I realized what I was doing, how small it was getting and wondered "what would happen if I just keep going?" It was clear that if I was careful and held the bevel of the chisel against the bottom of the bowl, nothing bad would happen and it didn't! That was almost six years ago and I've been doing it this way ever since. I've never been sorry about it and I've never made a major mistake with it. Once in awhile if the nub breaks half-way, I will stop and finish on the bench. No point in taking chances! 😊
Totally amazing, Phil. Totally amazing! You certainly thought this one out to come up with something so beautiful, my friend. Great exhibition of your talents, sir! Three thumbs up! 😃😃😃
