I am so glad I found your videos. The most important thing I have learned from you is patience, and secondly is don't try to take more than the wood will give you. There is beauty is every stump, root, and limb!
Well I kept hollering at my computer but for some reason you didn't hear me. You could of ysed the sand-o-flex on the inside of the bowl . That was a beautiful piece of work. Keep going Phill, it will keep you young.
The opening in the bowl is far too small to allow the sand o flex to enter. Plan on going as long as I can, Bob. I'm having too much fun! Thanks, buddy! 😊
Love this video, Phil. You always find some great ways to show how it's possible to turn different projects from pieces of wood that I might not even consider using. Cheers Carol 😊
I’m loving that one, Phil. A really nice substantial hollow form bowl and I’ve loved the wood finish and the bark on the top just finishes it up perfectly.. Excellent work as always :-)
Phil, I love the way at the start, because the "wing" sticks out so far, it looks like magic! There is nothing there, but there are chips flying off it! Like I said, MAGIC!! The finished article looks amazing and I would DEFINITELY call it a hollow form!! Well done, Phil!
Love the dinosaur-skin texture of that bark! Man, that was a hard job, lots of seat-of-the-pants problem solving--what makes art fun and sometimes a bit scary.
Phil, you remind me of me; diffident, wary and slow to become confident in your method of approach. I relate 6o your chatter: "old agei, man oh man"! Very good result in thie end. Thanks for the example, Phil. I gain confidence from your cautious, hesitant approach but getting there in the end.Slow and easy. Excellent result, congratulations.
with each creation of yours we watch becomes my new favorite! Incredibly beautiful gift fm mother nature and you've made it more spectacular! Thank you Phil!
What a stunning piece here, produced by the gifted Phil Anderson. I'm serious about both those comments. I just love everything about your turning videos. Your pieces always have that 'WOW' factor about them. Letting us into your thoughts & problem solving is always such a delight & educational too. As a retired Senior Master of Art (teaching) it is great to have you always letting the particular piece wood you are working with help in the forming of your thoughts & helping you to release the beauty within. This is the 'creative process' at work & it means that you are always 'up for the fight'. Keep up your great work & let the creative juices continue to flow as you must surely be an inspiration to other wood turners both experienced & beginners alike. Fabulous piece my friend in every way you look at it. (PS - I wish you would try the white & silver pens I have told you about for signing these dark woods.) Don from South Aust.
Thank you so much, Don, for your kind remarks. I wish I could remember to get the dang pens! OK, I just checked Amazon. They have gel pens in those colors and a set of what they call markers in those colors. Which to get? Then, when I get them I'll need to remember I have them! LOL!
Good evening, Phil. It's New Year's Eve and I found this video from long ago. Congratulations to you for working through this turning. Very nice finished piece.
Hi Phil, Lar from 🇨🇦, I just thought I would stop by the old shady acres and see what’s on the lathe today. I am impressed ( as always) with the results of this turn👍. It has good shape and colour. Keep the turnings coming please , you are very educational and entertaining to to watch. Thanks Again.
Well Phil. I think this says what I think of this piece. The whole time I was watching this video the thought constantly going through my head was- Thou Shalt Not Covet Thy Neighbors Woodturning Skills And Creations! LOL Gorgeous
Wow, thank you, Glenda! It's really all about the wood, for me. This type of thing just brings out whatever skill I might have. I'm so happy you like it! 😊
Beautiful job! You made that look so easy. It's my favorite form of bowl to turn but I really struggle with them. I finally broke down and bought a carbide scraper for hollow form bowls. I really don't like using it but it does make it a little safer when you're really going in deep
Hi there Phil just to let you know that I have just been through this video and I am so impressed because I think this one looks amazing with that live edge around it and I think personally it would be so impressive with a big plant growing it with a pot and it will be a real statement piece :-)
I'm sure you've figured out how to sand the inside by now. Chuck up a dowel with slot in end and sandpaper in the slot. You've done it yourself. Beautiful piece!!
Wow, I can't get over how thick that bark is! You said at the end it was fun to turn but it was stressful for me Lol. I was too worried about an accident and losing that beautiful bark! You sound like me talking to myself lol, Well should I do this or that? I have no idea but let's do it anyway and find out! Ha ha haa! People say I talk to myself a lot and I say, I needed expert advice! Are you getting any better? Hope so
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop I'll be here, just rest and take your time. As an older dude, I know it takes a minute longer to recover than when I was 30! Don't push it.
Beautiful! You are my kind of turner. I too have a hard time visualizing what the finished piece will look like. Sometimes I reverse the piece once I’m into it and the bowls usually look good when done. I guess we must be artists! Hang in there and thanks for sharing.
That’s a lovely piece. Black Walnut is my favorite wood to turn, it has such wonderful color and grain. I would agree with you and call it a hollow form. The live edge is a great feature here. Bravo!
Another nice one, sir! Always enjoy watching and learning from you. Hope to send you some pictures soon of some of the stuff you have inspired me to do. Would have liked to have finished them sooner but life got in the way. Thanks again.
Wow walnut is one of my favorite woods I love the grain. I thought you was going to get stumped but as normal you figured it out. You amaze me every time. Love this one it's beautiful. I wish I would have started from the beginning like a big Dumby I jumped all over the place.
Ha, ha. As my father always used to say, old age ain’t for wimps. I agree with him these days. What a stunning piece. I think I’m in love. It’s beautiful. For someone who said he didn’t know what he was doing you sure nocked this one out of the park. And by definition it is definitely a hollow form.
Sounds like your dad and I would have gotten along just fine, Chanda! I'm so glad you like this, it's a favorite of mine, as well. Thank you for the definition! Phil
Got a love Walnut think you could have made the base smaller but as always it' personal preference, good you tried something different as well, enjoying the journey with you.
I have another friend that's always telling me to make the base smaller, Lewis. I just have a hard time turning away perfectly good wood just to make a style statement, I guess. I'm so glad you watched and commented, thank you! 😊
Morning Phil (double espresso morning)...I do not know how I missed this one...Sitting back and watching your adventure is just a joy as always. I enlarge to the big screen and rewind a few times so it lasts through my coffee..ha. I feel this is one of your best BUT all are great plus a few bug holes always gives a positive touch...THANK YOU PHIL.....tm
Great piece no matter what you call it. You always amaze me when you cut off the tenon, I'd want a pedal switch, but you always get it turned off at the perfect time. Jim Miller is right Rebel Turner doses some crazy stuff. I always expect his pieces to fly apart, but like yours they don't. Good sign of a great turner.
It's easier than you might think, Timothy. Removing the tenon is really simple, as long as the piece isn't really big or off-balance. With those, I stop short and cut it off with a chisel. I watch Al all the time and he definitely gives me inspiration. Thank you so much for watching and commenting, truly appreciated!

Another very nice piece Phil. When you have time catch some of The Rebel Turner videos. He does excellent work with some frightful looking pieces of fire wood. His method of holding the pieces affords some different opportunities.

Thank you, Bethany! I too like glossy finishes, but when there is bark or defects present it can be too difficult, for me at least, to be able to smooth the finish inside those defects. I'm sure someone has found a way but I don't know it, yet. :)
Truly enjoy your videos. Painful to see you struggle so much to sand the inside to get after that end grain. I'm just a rookie turner, but I am finding that using a curved scraper can be very effective in dealing with rough end grain, prior to applying finer sanding grits. Beautiful piece. Gives me an idea of how to deal with a chunk of wood that has some interesting small burls on the bark. I say it's a hollow form.
