Thank you for making things look achievable for anyone to do. With expensive equipment, or basic equipment, it still shows that anyone can make these products. I’ve only just started wood turning about a month ago and have watched a few of your videos. You explain everything clearly. I get the most out of looking how you position your tools and the angles used. I’ve learned a lot by watching your videos. Thank you again.
Thank you for your kind words and support Archer, enjoy your turning journey.
Mike, Even though the bowl didn't make it to completion, I'm thankful for the video. There was enough information to help me with an attempt. Thanks again!
Good to hear you took something away from the video.
The screwups are as helpful as the successes. Wood turners are a unique community in that we show our goofs as much as we do and we all get to learn from them. Thanks for your honesty in posting this video.
I tend to agree with you Dave, in reality it would get a bit boring if things went right every time ;)
Thanks for watching
Cheers
Mike
It's always good to know, that this things also happen to experienced turners and even they show it. Thank you Mike for sharing
These things do happen to most if not all of us at sometime or another Gunther, so why not show the mishaps ... as well as the successes ;).
Thanks for watching
Cheers
Mike
It's always good to see that a catch can happen to the professionals and not just me.🤕
Bugger that was looking very promising. Looks like a cold day in your shop Mike!
All is not lost Mark :)
Thanks for watching, and yes, damned cold :)
Cheers
Mike
Thanks Mike, another great video. I’ve recently retired and new to wood turning and your videos give me very good hints, tips & inspiration, so keep up the great work.
Thanks Michael much appreciated.
Always thinking outside the box LOVE your work just getting started at 52 never to late right! Your work is up there with the best love watching what you create .
Hi Joe, and thank you very much for your kind words, they are much appreciated.
Cheers, Mike - it's great to see your work and techniques - and sometimes, as you say, 'these things happen'...to all of us!!
Thank you Stewart, it's all experience .. if not always the best experience ;)
Take care mate
Mike
I know this video has been out for a while Mike, but I am planning on turning some cube bowls and this was helpful to me brother. I appreciate all your stuff man!
Glad to be of service Don and thanks for watching
Cheers
Mike
Love to see that I'm not the only one who has had a tenon break! Thank you.
Happens to us all David :)
Cheers
Mike
awwwwwww!! I'm with you on showing the fails as well. The three corner idea is great, I'll give it a go. Thanks for sharing Mike.
Hi Mike,
Sorry to see the bowl come apart. I really like the concept of turning the cube from two of the corners to make the 3 sided bowl. Thanks for going ahead and sharing the video with everyone.
Jim
Hi James, sometimes things just don't go to plan, and that's what makes it that much sweeter when they do :)
Thanks for watching mate.
Cheers
Mike
Yeah!!!.. Thanks for the transparency Mike.... I will add this to my ideas folder.....By the way , my Bosch glue gun came yesterday. The up and over garage door is going at the weekend and my new external vestibule frame with UPVC door and frame will be installed for my new workshop in my garage.......Happy turning Mike.......
Things are coming together then by the sounds of it Ian, bet you can't wait :)
Cheers
Mike
Excellent video Mike. Appreciate that you show the failures; ALWAYS something to learn from them!
Thank you Mr. SLUDGE ;)
Cheers
Mike
Thanks again, Mike, for your honesty and integrity in posting even the "learning experiences". It's only a failure of you don't learn anything.
Thank you CJ, much appreciated
Cheers
Mike
Another informative and inspiring video Mike. Thank you not only for sharing the good, but also the mishaps. As they say, we learn from our mistakes, and others'. I see an attempt at this in my future. Thanks again for sharing.
Thanks Fred, appreciate it.
Cheers
Mike
Brilliant demo Mike thanks. I am pleased to know that i am not the only one to produce flying bowls. I like it when demo disasters are shown as well. It has given me an idea to band saw off three corners of my bowls that have ended up with splits in the edges, making an art work out of a disaster.
Thank you John, I think the errors are as helpful as the "good" bits!
Take care
Mike
Great reality video. Very informative for us. You are our " go to" video guy. Thanks, Ethan and Frank.
Thank you for your kind supportive words.
Cheers
Mike
I was so looking forward to the end product. Glad you’re safe, Mike.
Thanks Kid ... watch this space ... the end is in sight ;)
Cheers
Mike
Thanks for posting this, Mike! You've inspired me once again.
Glad you liked it, and thanks for watching.
Cheers
Mike
Gutted for ya Mike! It’s so frustrating when these things happen. I’ve been meaning to turn one ever since I saw Stephan ogal turn his, and now seeing you do it, it’s reminded me. Great video my friend...
Cheers...
Thanks Adam ... all is not lost ... I hope ;).
Thanks for watching
Cheers
Mike
As usual Mike. Love you showing your failures. I mean it in a nice way. It makes us ordinary turners feel as though that even the very experienced turners, stuff it up sometimes. Well done mate.
Thanks Paul, I have to be very wary of showing my failures, as if I showed them all, there would be little time left on the videos for anything else ;)
Thanks for watching mate
Mike
Damn. I'm so sorry you lost the bowl. So glad you weren't hurt. Nice to know that even experts like you have problems
Being a new turner that makes me feel a little better for all the mistakes I've made.
Hi AlisaBeth ... I did manage to save it though :)
Mike Waldt
Excelent. I tried to make one of these but I couldn't get my points to grab into the corners of the wood. Any suggestions?
Great project Mike. Must give that a try myself! Thanks for the mention and showing my sticker!
Thanks John, it's a fun turn I promise you. My pleasure as well mate :)
Cheers
Mike
Mike, thanks for not being to proud to post this video, it means a lot to some of us less experienced turners to see a person such as yourself have an issue with a turning. It proves to me, that I am not the only one who has issues with some of the wood I use.
Thanks for your kind words and support Len.
Cheers
Mike
Another informative and inspiring video Mike, and thanks for the shoutout!
Thank you William, and my pleasure mate, you do some incredible work :)
Take care
Mike
ahh mate. I have been on an addiction to your videos the past couple days... Been binge watching :P
Amazing videos...
High five from fellow UK wood worker :P
Thank you very much Wally, your kind words are really appreciate.
Cheers
Mike
Shoot Mike, I applaud you for showing us the real deal--I learned a new approach to mounting a piece and I will be trying one sometime soon. Thanks for your vid's mate!
Glad you got something from the video Don, and thanks for watching.
Cheers
Mike
I really enjoyed that, Mike, especially the end!!!
Take care
James
Thank you James ... now why does that not surprise me ;)
Hope you're keeping well mate.
Cheers
Mike
Thanks for the time and effort Mike 👍
My pleasure, and thank you for watching Steven.
Cheers
Mike
Very interesting bowl Mike. Thanks for showing and offering us a chance to learn from your experience. Love the finish and figure of the wood. Hope you can salvage some for a smaller turning. Best, Bob
Thanks for watching Bob, and a save is on the cards :)
Cheers
Mike
Very informative project video and on a process that I have not seen done as yet, but so fascinating to watch and learn from, thank you!
Thank you Erin, glad you enjoyed the video.
I really enjoyed your video and I’m glad you took it so well. I was shocked when it happened just when it happens to me in the workshop. I nonetheless learned how to do it and will really look carefully to any cracks are present. Thank you so much for your teaching in demonstration and explanations for the three sided bowl. Take care and be safe.
Thank you Sylvie much appreciated.
Nicely done Mike as always. I just recently had a class at my local Turning club on three sided boxes. I’ve been wanting to try a six sided bowl, lol. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you, much appreciated. Six sides .... that should look different :)
Cheers
Mike
Hello Mike! I have been watching your videos for a while now. You are a problem though. . . everytime I watch a video I have something else to try. The list is getting quite long now. I cannot even begin to list all the help you have given me. But, for starters:
Figuring out that I could use a variety of tools with my Sovereign handle. When I bought it all I wanted was the scraping capability and never gave thought to adding other tool bars.
Seeing how I should be using a swept back gouge. That was huge.
Those great little ornamental bird houses you demonstrated. My lovely wife cannot wait for a few of those to be turned.
The list goes on and on.
Thank you for all your efforts to further this craft.
Don't forget all the new tools we have to buy too! What works for Mike typically works for me too!
Thank you for your kind words and support, and my apologies for being the cause of your dilemma ;)
Glad to hear that you have found some of my videos helpful, and I appreciate you watching.
Take care
Mike
Lol William :) :)
Take care mate
Mike
Great respect for posting the video, even when it went 'pear shaped'.
Thanks Gary ... I did however manage to save it :)

Thanks Kyle, trouble is the first was better!!
Keep on truckin' as they say :)
Take care
Mike
Mike, thank you for posting this, I learned a lot from it and appreciate you posting an opps. Regards Philip
Glad you found it useful Philip.
Glad to see nobody injured, sorry to see the project get damaged but great tips.
Thanks for watching Gunner
Cheers
Mike
always wondered how this 3 sider was made, now I know and will give it a try, thanks for the video Mike.
Glad you found it of interest Mark.
Cheers
Mike
Oooooh nooooo! I sure wasn't expecting that, Mike! That was looking like a great project. So sorry to see it fly apart on you! I will definitely be trying that in the near future. It looks like a real fun and challenging turning project. Thanks for sharing the technique, Mike. I'm sure the next one you do will be perfect.
Take care, buddy,
.....Gord
Me neither Gord ... lol!
It is a fun turn though, you'll love doing it I assure you.
Thanks for watching my friend
Cheers
Mike
Oh, never seen a bowl like that before! Looked great until the catch! Lovely
Thank you Aidan
Cheers
Mike
Very interesting. I have often wondered how that was done. Glad to see I'm not the only one that "stuff" happens to! Keep the videos coming, Mike. I enjoy all of them, but I have learned to not bring a cup of coffee while watching. I don't like cold coffee!
Lol Alan, cold coffee is quite refreshing don't you think ;)
Thanks for watching
Cheers
Mike
Nice thank you for showing the fly offs even the great ones have mishaps too.
Thank you for watching.
Beautiful piece. Love to watch you work.. the magic Englishmen.
Don't insult him, he's Welsh !!
Hi Timothy, as Adrian sys I am WELSH not English ... lol ;)
Thanks for watching mate
Cheers
Mike
LMAO Adrian ;)
Lol. WELSH it is. Deepest apologies for the insult. But besides being a wonderful wood turner do you drink tea Irish whiskey or Scotch. Cheers to my friends across the pond.
Loved it Mike
Thank you Matty
Cheers
Mike
It was looking so good too. Still worth a try.
Thanks Jez, hopefully all is not lost :)
Cheers
Mike
Thanks for sharing this Mike, interesting shape which challenges me so I'll give it a go sometime soon. And thanks for sharing with the 'fly past'. It happened to me when I had a catch whilst deep hollowing, the force of the catch was presumably greater than the strength of the tenon. I was that pixxxxx off I put it to one side for quite awhile and then thought: I'll try and salvage this! Not perfect but I'm well pleased with the end result.
My pleasure Robert, I like to show errors, and there are many, as hopefully viewers can learn from them. Thanks for your support.
Wow, thanks so much for showing this video. This has now happened to me twice, with the tenon giving way. I thought it was my lack of skill with tenons. Now I see it can even happen with masters in the field.
Thank you for the kind words, but a master I think not Beth ;).
Thsnk for watching
Cheers
Mike
Nice one. I always check you out first when thinking of doing a new project. This one inspired me to make a hollow form finial lidded version - also in cedar of Lebanon coincidentally! I managed to glue up the cracks on my blank fortunately - now on my fledgling channel if interested. Cheers
Thank you Malcolm 😊
Best of luck with your channel.
Grande.
Proprio bello Mike!
Thank you.
thank you Massimilliano
Cheers
Mike
Sorry for the blow out. Keep up the great work and thanks again for interesting instructions.
Therese things happen, Jason.
Thank for watching
Cheers
Mike
Looked like a great piece. Glad to see your fingers are still attached! You know, I am not sure about that type of cedar, but the kind we have here in my area (Midwest USA) is notoriously brash. Any hairline cracks in Missouri red cedar are potential disaster areas. I hope you can salvage the piece.
Thanks again for helping to educate us. Seeing the masters suffer setbacks gives us newbies hope, and teaches us lessons too!
Hi Carol, and thanks for your comments, always appreciated.
A save plan is underway, hopefully all is not lost :)
Take care
Mike
Loved the video! You are human after all.
Thanks Billy, my wife doesn't think so mate ;)
Take care
Mike
Very interesting. Great turn!
Thank you Dark Horse.
Cheers
Mike
That's crazy nuts, but it's fantastic!
Lol .. thank you Michael
Cheers
Mike
Mike, I am going to say something, but don't take it wrong. I love watching you in the shop turning anything. Your voice and the way you teach have a calming affect. What I am trying to say is this: your patience and practical attitude with your calm peaceful character are as much inspiring as your woodturning. Someone else here said the screw ups are worth value also. I really can't say this was a screw up just a mishap. Now when this happens to me... its a screw up! And I scream at myself. Not Mike Waldt. So from now on when I want to get mad I am going to tell myself... do it like Mike. LOL. Just remain calm ...... (right)
Thank you for you very kind words Mr. Woodman, they are very much appreciated.
Take care
Mike
Nice video Mike! i like the look of the three sided bowl' Thanks for sharing.😎👍JP
JP, and thanks also for watching my friend.
Take care
Mike
You're very welcome friend 😎
Great video .. again ! Really nice to see the fails as well as the successes . For me ,one more reason why getting a log burner was a great idea that way my fails are never wasted . Jokes aside ...shame ! As it was looking like a nice piece.
Thanks Pete, and a rather large LOL :)
If at first you don't succeed .....
Cheers
Mike
That's a pitty it looked like a lovely bit of timber too! Nothing ventured nothing gained. Thanks for sharing Mike 👍
Thanks for watching Alan
Cheers
Mike
Thanks for watching Alan

Mike
bugger and there was me thinking i was going to see something that i haven't already done, lol.
im sure youll crack it next time, no i don't mean crack it, i mean you'll have success.
thanks for posting what does happen to us all.
take care
Rob
LOL Rob, and thank you for the confidence mate, and the crack ;)
Take care mate
Mike
That's an interesting technique and the first time I have seen the lathe used with "hollow" centers. Personally, I would advocate wearing a faceshield, although I cannot tell whether you did or not. I recently had a tenon break, and the bowl hit the camera which was literally next to my head. Take care, Mike, and thanks for sharing!
Hi Dominic, I can assure you I always wear a full face shield for all my turning, even used to wear one when I turned a lot of pens!
Thanks for your concern, and watching.
Take care
Mike
Shame you didn't quite get to the end, but so reassuring to see even the pros can get caught - your video is much appreciated, Mike. p.s. I had a small piece of bowl 'blow' and it knocked off my full faceshield.
These things happen Owen, good to hear you were wearing protection .. imagine what could have happened if you weren't.
Take care, and thanks for watching.
Cheers
Mike
Thank you Mike :) Got enough info to do this now. Shame it didn't succeed, but surely it can be saved somehow :)
Glad you found it of interest, I think a sve is on the cards :)
Take care
Mike
Bravery Honest
Good video to see when you are a total rookie like mself!!! Thank you.
Thank you for the kind words … nothing ever "always" goes right for most people … and tha is certainly true for me :)
Thanks for watching
Cheers
Mike
Good video, Mike!
Thank you Rick
Cheers
Mike
at least you're safe Mike thats all that matters and you did lovely job on outside!
Thanks Afshin, appreciate you stopping by my friend.
Cheers
Mike
Hi Mike,
Nothing ventured,,,,nothing gained!
Being new to wood turning I've only had 3 pieces fly off the lather so far,,,,no dents in the walls or ceilings,,,,,yet! LOL
Thanks for sharing the video!
Tom
Exactly right Thomas, and thanks for watching.
Cheers
Mike
Oh, Mike, it wus goin so well, do like the first one you made with the turned up corners, got that oriental look about it, love the videos you make, thank you.
Hi Chas, and thank you for your kind and supportive words, I really do appreciate them.
I hope to save this in a future video.
Take care
Mike
Ten out of ten Mike for uploading your mistakes.
If I revealed all of mine UA-cam would crash.
HA ha ha ha Alan, thanks for stopping by mate, and making me smile :)
Cheers
Mike
It looked like it was going to be a great bowl Mike. I was flicking through some of the other channels and came across Stephen Kyle's channel and he turned a 3 corner bowl with a lid. It is worth a look.
Sorry it was Stephen Ogle
As you say it was Stephen Ogle, he also inspired me to have a go, but I never got around to it :)
Thanks for watching
Cheers
Mike
Great video Mike, as usual. Have you considered maybe putting it between centers again and try to remake a tenon on the base? With the chipped out piece the bowl would probably be somewhat smaller than planned. It might make a decent rescue project. Happy turning Mike.
Thanks Rick, and exactly what I have planned ... hopefully with a little more success!
Thanks for watching
Cheers
Mike
I was also taken with Carl's three sided bowl Mike and shall have a stab at making one soon.
Shame it didn't quite work out for you mate but it should be recoverable though, however please do another video on it sometime ! Great video mate and cheers, Bram
It's a great method, even if my second attempt went a bit wonky, but as they say Brm " We shall overcome" ... hopefully ;)
Take care mate
Mike
Brilliant seeing how its done and tips, ideas etc. Thanks for sharing. I wonder if choosing the Knot was such a wise choice for the base, i..e a bit like identifying a fault line? But - I've never tried, and you have so well done and thanks again Mike.
Thanks John, the knot was not involved as I'd turned the tenon well above it, but thsnk for the suggestion, and for watching.
Take care
Mike
After watching your video and sending you some comments via email several weeks ago, I tried turning another three sided bowl. I got to about the point you reached in your turning when disaster hit again. My tenon broke off into three pieces and gluing it did no good. So, I will try another time turning this bowl.
For your viewers, this bowl looks simple to turn. Looks are very deceiving and it is actually quite challenging to turn the bowl. Make sure your blank is a cube with all sides having the same dimension. If you are off a small fraction of an inch, it will mess up the bowl since the wings will not be even. Hollowing out the inside is where the problems will raise their ugly heads. It will be very easy to have a catastrophic catch occur when turning. A small round carbide may lessen the chances of this happening. Good luck folks. This is a very challenging bowl to turn.
Thank you for your thoughts they are very much appreciated, and thanks for watching.
Mike Waldt
I was able to complete my three winged bowl on my 5th attempt. I used a 3.4” x 3.4” x 3.4” cube of cherry wood. I wanted to complete using my conventional turning tools, but I still have a long way to go in being proficient using those tools. Instead I used carbide to do most of the work along with some 1/2” bowl gouge use.
I discovered a small cube of wood is much more challenging to turn than a larger cube with 5” or 6” sides. I would suggest staying with closed grain woods like cherry or maple and avoid open grain woods like oak, hickory, hackberry, walnut, etc. The points of the wings tend to break off easily with open grain woods unless one posses a very light touch with the turning tool. And turning this bowl with small cubes, the open grain woods seem to catch more easily. But that is my own opinion due to inexperience turning wood.
When hollowing out, be sure to mark the position of the corners on the tool rest along with the desired wall thickness of the wings. Each corner of the blank should line up with the mark on the tool rest. Accuracy in cutting your blank is paramount and all sides having the same dimension. Do not move the tool rest until the outer edges & thickness have been turned. This means the tool rest will remain in place for most of the turning until the center portion of the blank gets into the way of your turning efforts.
Having a light touch is critical in turning this bowl. Sanding should be done by hand while the piece is stationary. The wings of a rotating bowl can be dangerous while sanding. Play it safe while sanding and turning. We don’t want bruised, broken or missing fingers here.
Carl's stuff always comes out perfect . Haha Joking . To bad it came off but at least you didn't get hit . Cheers Mike take care.
I agree Glenn, but you forget,
Carl is a "proper" woodturner ;)
Cheers
Mike
I forgot to say great video ... though in the beginning i would have liked to have seen a shot of the tenon. I bought a cheap 4x4 and cut it down to several 4x4x4 and just practiced on those. non of them turned out very well as it was pine. Maybe I needed to sharpen or just baby the cuts a little more, but pine was difficult. Thanks again for all that you do.
Thanks Rick, appreciate that. Pine or the same sort of wood is hard to get a good finish on ... but a good medium for practicing those baby cuts with sharp tools :)
Appreciate your supportive words as well my friend.
Nice vid mate 😁
Cheers mate, appreciate it.
Cheers
Mike
That was hard luck mike, the idea is great but with me still learning. I have gone through the bottom of a few bowls ,I have learned a lot from you and getting better keep up the good work
These things happen David, it's all part of the learning experience :)
Thanks for watching, and your kind words too.
Cheers
Mike
thanks for the link to William Hunt. Looks like he's got a lot going on.
Pleasure NEB, he is a very talented turner.
Take care
Mike
Oh mate.....it was looking so nice! Can you make another tenon on it? Thank you for the shutout buddy!
Take care my friend!
Hi Carl, and thanks for watching mate, I intend to re mount it and give it another go.
...and I didn't try to shut you out ... honest (look at you comment ;) )
Take care my friend
Mike
Received stickers, great thanks.
Glad to hear that Jez.
Take care
Mike
Lovely job Mike! Even if it decided to take to the sky. Some bowls are just like birds, they never forget the wild, and you can't tame them. I really like the smaller bowl you showed in the end, where the ends cave in on the bowl, I find that a little sinister and pretty. Thanks for sharing your efforts man!!
Yuval
Thanks Yuval, strangely I didn't trust the wood making that inward slope on the wings., but in the end it was something else that let me down ;)
Thanks for watching my friend.
Cheers
Mike
Call me Yival one more time man, and I'll find you at Makers Central and I will get you. Be warned... ;)
Yuval Lahav Woodturning
No idea what your talking about YUVAL ;)
That's a good Mike... You just won your life back... ;)
Yuval Lahav Woodturning LMAO Love ya mate :)
COOL VIDEO..... THIS IS GREAT... ! THANKS...
Thank you Kassi
Cheers
Mike
I think I am making one this Saturday, I'm going to have to take light cuts I think 🤔 great work Mike 👍 just unfortunate with the tennon 👍
Good luck Rob and thanks mate.
Bummer you lost it, I do appreciate you uploading the procedure anyway. I agree as well better to see the issues that can arise so that one can be prepared accidents happen without warning.
These things do happen Lionel, so it's always best to show them as you say.
Thanks for watching
Cheers
Mike
I think it is a cool looking sculpture.
Thank you Courtney
Cheers
Mike
Mike you got to give me credit here for 100 views. Yeah a hundred. because that is how many times I had to watch that blow away to be convinced that it actually happened LOL.I am glad you were wearing your protective cup LOL. Very surprising video. You better stop watching me you're going to get all the bad habits...Take care.
ha ha Al, I think I may stop watching you .. because you make it look to easy mate, and I just ain't got the "stuff" needed .. well not all the time anyway ;)
Take care, and thanks for stopping by my friend
Cheers
Mike
Oh, I hope you can 'save' this piece as it's lovely wood and an interesting design...
A save is in the works Katherine.
Thanks for watching
Cheers
Mike
Love it Mike will be giving it atry
Thanks Jim, it was fun I have to admit :)
Cheers
Mike
So good I played it 5 times :)
Lol .... Thank you Sir :)
Cheers
Mike
I meant the 're-entry' part, not the whole video. Happened me a week and half ago, using chuck on expansion instead of contraction on a small piece. :)
Pascal
Next time it's going to better. Thank you for sharing 👍🏼
Hopefully you're right Tommas :)
Take care
Mike
HI MR WALDT i do not type very well and i do not know were to stop and go LOL anyway i hope you can read it with out trouble i really enjoy your videos and i learn from you every time i watch your videos and you do beautiful pieces of ART i wish i had you for a neighbor here in OKLAHOMA talk to you later and GODBLESS larry
Hi Larry, thank you for your very kind words, they are much appreciated.
Take care
Mike
Mike, you showed the basics of the process. Are you going to do more videos of the three cornered bowl? It will be interesting to see where you take this with your aesthetics.
Hi Joel, I'm sure there'll be more in the future :). Thanks for watching.
Cheers
Mike
It is nice to see that for others, everything doesn't come out perfect. "cause mine don't lots of times.
Believe me Norman, it happens too often for my liking ... lol :)
Take care and thanks for watching
Cheers
Mike
Hey Mike you could stick it back on a worm screw or a screw chuck because you haven’t turned away too much of the middle make another tenant and do it again
Personally I have made three of these and I found if you have it using tailstock for almost all of the interior turning it gives it much more stability and much less likely to ping off
Hope this helps
Thanks for the tips Harry much appreciated.
Great vid mate ! I have had the same thing happen . Scared the bejesus out of me !
Thanks Mason, I'm sure it happens to us all at some time.
Cheers
Mike
