American Beauty (1999) synopsis explained - A telesales operative becomes disillusioned with his existence and begins to hunger for fresh excitement in his life. As he experiences a new awakening of the senses, his wife and daughter also undergo changes that seriously affect their family. Critically acclaimed, this film won Oscars for Best Screenplay, Best Director, Best Actor and Best Film.
Lord of War (2005) synopsis explained - The 20-year arms dealing career of Queens, N.Y., outcast Yuri Orlov (Nicolas Cage) serves as a window onto the end of the Cold War and the emergence of worldwide terrorism. He finds himself reassuring his more ethically challenged younger brother, Vitaly (Jared Leto), while adeptly sidestepping the pursuit of federal agent Jack Lawrence (Ethan Hawke). The globetrotting arms dealer also pursues the woman of his dreams, supermodel Ava Fontaine (Bridget Moynahan).
The Theory of Everything (2014) synopsis explained - In the 1960s, Cambridge University student and future physicist Stephen Hawking (Eddie Redmayne) falls in love with fellow collegian Jane Wilde (Felicity Jones). At 21, Hawking learns that he has motor neuron disease. Despite this -- and with Jane at his side -- he begins an ambitious study of time, of which he has very little left, according to his doctor. He and Jane defy terrible odds and break new ground in the fields of medicine and science, achieving more than either could hope to imagine.

I like American Beauty, but when you consider all the other great films to come out of 1999, sometimes I’m surprised it won.

I still need to count how many movies I own though, so I’m not quite done with the shelf and write it down my notes in case one movie is missing from said shelf, thankfully every movie has its disc. I haven’t seen Miss Peregrine.
Hey two Best Actor winning movies. Jeez, Eddie is my number two also, I have seen that five Best Actor nominees and too wish Mike won, that was also the year Jake Gyllenhaal was not nominated for Nightcrawler. Eddie gave a great speech, I’ll give him that.
I’m looking at American Beauty from my shelf right now. 🌹. You commented on Keanu imagine The Matrix getting in? Of the five movies that were nominated, maybe Sixth Sense because it’s the better remembered and influential? I’m still amazed that it is one of my favorite filmmakers’ Sam Mendes directorial debut. That Chris Cooper subplot is tragic and how culminates 💔.
Need to rewatch Lord of War, I also have some of my movies that I don’t want anymore.

Yes I think sixth sense would have been a wonderful winner! I would have been very happy with that. Though it would be picked apart a lot more through history had it won. That’s one of the downfalls with winning. Sometimes it’s better to not win… in the long term.

Imagine if it did, would M. Night have the “Oscars Curse?”, I think he might. I know Sixth Sense was not his directorial debut, but it feels like it, he and Mendes were going at it, I can’t think of another year that it’s happened. When I visited Philadelphia, I told you that I saw the house, imagine coming from a Best Picture winner, besides the Rocky steps which I have also seen. 😌
