I have an Anycubic FDM printer and I love it. I don't use it as much as I want, but once I got the settings dialed in, it was just a case of making sure the plate was leveled and go. I did learn 1 thing the hard way and that is, don't ignore the settings of the item you are printing. I did once and it says my magnetic pad. I mean it was totaled. Also, don't let moisture get into your filament. Go to the dollar store and buy cheap dehumidifier breads. Put them in a bag with your filament and you will never have to worry about moisture.

I always tell people that, if you get into 3d printing for tabletop, you need to understand that 3d printing is its whole own hobby that you have to enjoy and dive into to get it to work for your tabletop hobby.

Been resin printing for a few years myself, and I find it way easier than FDM, there's very few points of failure.
Best upgrades I ever made was a flex plate, silicone mats for work surfaces, a wash+cure station(sometimes you just need the uni-tasker Alton), and a chemistry stand to filter resin back into the bottles.
Best improvements though? Learning about supports proper, having a good settings profile so they don't damage small prints, and upgrading my process, like removing supports before curing final and using warm water, not over-curing (avoid brittle parts and frosting), letting the IPA evaporate entirely before curing... etc.
And Patience, speed will always lead to more failures, these machines are inherently very fast as is, so working without being in a hurry is critical.
Learning certainly helped the most, and I hardly ever have failures anymore, even after the machine sits around for a month or two without use.
The camera has a good use case, that is, you can check on long (Tall) prints and stop them before it gets too far into the failure, combined with remote pause to do a full check, you can save a lot of material or possibly a FEP from ruining your day. Outside that, time lapses? can't really think of a good use for it.

One other use for the webcam via remote monitoring: Large prints take a lot of resin, and it may help you monitor resin levels in the vat so you know when you need to pause and go top it up.

+1 for the flex plates and the wash/cure station.
When you're cranking out prints being able to pull the plate, dump it in the wash station and then hit go on the next batch is a huge quality of life improvement.

Personally i find flex plates a pointless waste of money. If you're struggling to get prints off your build plate your settings are wrong

    • @lowaimnobrain

@@cabe_bedlam Flex plate is baffling to me, decent settings = roughly same amount of force to remove a model as buttering a slice of bread. Feels inherently risky to take a bendy piece of metal to a tool that relies on being perfectly level too

3D printing has allowed me to get back into this hobby. Without it, I don't think I could not enjoy modeling anymore because for me the joy came from building/converting/creating. Yea, perhaps the gameplay was a minor point, but the real joy was the build.
I only could get an FDM printer right now, but I love it.

To me, FDM (filament) printing is a lot harder to tune than resin printing. I own both printers, and while I never had any issues with my elegoo mars (using elegoo resin and recommended settings), my FDM printer broke mutiple times. Nothing complicated to fix, but compared to the resin printer, there is a big difference.

  • @yoyodynetoys
    @yoyodynetoys 2 роки тому +3

the contentiousness you talk about is predicated on people not trying, and therefore not understanding the technology, or it's workflow. It's remarkable to me how accessible intuitive 3d resin printing is - sure, there's a learning curve, and there's a bunch of learning and troubleshooting you have to do, but overall, I think it's fantastic. You can support indie artists who don't have access to manufacturing - they provide the digital sculpts and the fabricaton happens on the consumer end. In terms of design workflow, it's pretty much the same as industry (TT games, toys, etc). Honestly, it changed the way I think about making things. And overtime, this is going to be increasingly accessible and financially viable for a large swath of hobby and collectors' markets.
Also - anyone getting into this - I highly recommend the Anycubic wash and cure 2.0 machine - it's so much cleaner and easier than any DIY solutions.

100% agree! Because I'm in the same scenario right now. When I started I used the Anycubic Photon and after a couple of prints I had dialed it down to perfection and it became so easy. The only issue I had was what do I print next? Upgraded to the Phrozen Mega 8k and now I am in that "too difficult" side... small items print just fine, but trying to go large uhhh dreading the time and resin this is going to take to figure it out.

It just takes time and effort to aquire all the necessary knowledge (while avoiding wrong information) and finding a good printer + resin + setting combo. Been almost non-stop printing with the Mighty 8K + Aqua 8K for two weeks now and my experience has been the same - very reliable and great print quality. 3D printing is really a hobby in its own.

My wife began our journey with 3d printing a couple of years ago. Our resin was brittle, we initially couldn't get the settings right, and our prints were hit and miss. We found that our build plate was loose on our Photon S, we had to take it off, tighten the 3 screws on the underside and it was good. I asked her to move to a more robust resin that was tougher and flexible. She also found good settings for it. We've been in love with 3d printing all over again. Our advice to anyone is to not give up, find the right settings for your printer and resin. Thanks for the video BMC.

You make such a great point in this video about how a lot of these designers make these wonderful looking 3d models for figurines. But the way they are designed, mainly as being one piece via one stl file, makes some of them difficult to print without generating flaws. Like its pretty obvious when the designers don't have any idea how printers actually print, and how supports have to be used sometimes. A lot of the problems I have run into could easily be solved if the figurines were just broken down into parts to be assembled after printing. Which yeah, I could do that on my own with 3d Builder, and have done it a few times now. But it does add some extra time to the process.

My first printer is the phrozen mini 4k, and I have loved it from the start. I even have been picking up free files from thingyverse and slapping auto-supports from lychee and having it work, at least on 90% of the files I print.

I personally started out 3d printing after watching your videos, rybonator, and a lot of other creators who document their failures as well as their successes. (Rybonator specifically is amazing about that). I decided to get an Elegoo Mars Pro 2 after a bit of debate, and I love it. The only monumental failures I have had were my fault because I didn't add enough resin. It's intuitive, Elegoo has water washable resin, and I love printing out dnd minis with it for my party. It also handles larger jobs very well. Still, thank you so much for more information on larger systems because I have thought about going for a larger printing bed but had heard of difficulties with them. Also, could we possibly get a video on your current printing set up and your recommendations for supplies for the hobby?

The need to find resin your printer plays nicely with can't be overstated. I have a Creality LD-002R resin printer. After my three test prints they sent loaded on the thumb drive, only one of my first twenty prints succeeded. I messed with all of the settings and then gave up for a year. I tried again about 6 months ago, and thought I had solved my problem when I figured out that I had been installing the film for the vat wrong. My prints kept failing though.
Eventually as a last ditch attempt that I was going to give my printer away when it failed, I bought a different brand of resin to try. I'm now working on my fourth liter of Elegoo's gray 405nm resin without a single failed print, and without having to change the film once. The only issues I've had with prints since swapping to this resin have come from me missing places that should have had supports, and even those have been minimal and easily cleaned up after.
This resin also doesn't smell terrible, which is a very nice improvement.

I've been resin printing for a little over 2 months. There is a learning curve, and as long as you keep early expectations in check, it is really satisfying. I did wind up wasting quite a bit of my first bottle of resin(again, part of that learning process.) There were some print fails, but also, the bigger issue - I ruined a lot of early prints removing supports. My printer is the Anycubic Mono 4K, and I am happy with it overall.

So far haven't had any failures and been running full plates , Didnt run a test print and tried setting from another person and dove right in . I got an Anycubic Photon Mono X as my first 3d printer. It worked perfectly out of the box with default settings. I haven't played with the settings yet as I haven't needed to (probs should try to optimize though). Occasionally I will have a failed print, but just cleaning out the vat and trying again has always worked. I would highly recommend anyone to get into 3d printing minis as it is pretty quick to learn how, placing your own supports is definitely a far more difficult part to get into but most models you can buy will come pre-supported. I love 3d printing most of all because I can support small artist and get incredible miniatures based on their vision.

It's a real hobby all by itself, maybe more than any other hobby I've had.
It's time consuming, even if you just buy STL's, I personally have had so many "pre supported" files fail that I always do my own supporting now. Cleaning equipment, the spare space you need.
I've been through a few hundred hours of blender usage and for me, that's the part that makes it all worth it. My 3d virtual stuff becomes real stuff.

I'm at that stage of having a hard time with my printer atm. Suddenly started getting fails. Left it for a good while before coming back to it. Test rooks print fine on it (elegoo m2p) but Loot pre supported files are having none of it! Really frustrating when going bad but awesome feeling when it works! I just need it to work again lol

It took me a day to get my printer sorted been great since I first got into it (November of last year) I also looked into doing my settings before it came and I sorted it out in reality the day it came, I use the same settings still, print at .03 layer level :-)

I haven’t delved into 3d printing, but I’ve worked with CNC manufacturing machines for many years and a lot of similarities overlap. The art isn’t “pressing a button” but tweaking the machine settings and learning what you can get away with when it comes to the material you are working with. If you can find someone experienced to help you out, that’s fantastic! But if you’re jumping into this totally green, expect to invest hours reading, watching videos, and asking questions on forums.

I had a plug and play FDM printer for over 5 years that I got to a point that I could run near flawlessly for months on end without issue, until the machine itself eventually ran it's course and was retired.
Since got an Elegoo Saturn 4k resin, and an Ender 3 v2 FDM printers. The Saturn has been an absolute gem, and once I dial in different resin's settings, it's great provided the room conditions are right. The Ender however has been like a stubborn teenager. When it works, it's awesome, but I've definitely had some arguments with it. Once it's set up properly though, it prints great too

3d printing is not as simple as printing to paper. There are a LOT of variables in the process. So... yeah, it's not just clicking on the print button and getting a thing. Sometimes you need ot fiddle with it.

I currently have a AnyCubic Mono 4k and a Elegoo Saturn S. I generally have pretty good experiences with issues related to supports on both printers, but that's probably mostly on me. I have been using the Phrozen 4k resin recently and love it. 3D printing has never been "plug and play" for me. I understand that 8k printers are more complicated and precise, but damn they are still expensive.

My experience has been a dream, although I know that’s not everyone.
I have a Mars 2 Pro and I’ve probably printed 250-300 minis or pieces of scatter thus far. Only ever had fails from bad supporting. My plate is scratched to hell and it helps with adhering so I’ve never had fails due to that. I keep things simple, only use 3 types of resin and I’ve only changed my FEP film once.
I love it because I sold a 2,000 point GW army to get it and have made my money back X 100 in what I have been able to do.
I personally was terrified to start but took the leap. It was one of the best table top choices I’ve ever made.

I'm glad you have basically said what I have felt since I started 3D printing. It takes some learning and some work to do it right. But it gets easier as you do that. I'm using a machine that is basically the same one you started with. I bought it used. I'm getting better with it all the time and every success is a time to celebrate. Just to compare, when you were using the Photon, what resin and settings were you using with it? I'm always double checking and tweaking it trying to get better results.

Just got a Mono X as well, and while I don't have nearly as many problems with print failure, I had the prints stick to the build plate WAY too hard. I just couldn't get the rafts off no matter what I tried, it came down to heating the stuff up and basically chiseling away at it bit by bit because the resin just broke off in small shards. I figure the checkerboard texture they etch into these plates was burned in way too deep, the surface felt really rough to the touch.
Ended up completely ruining the plate in the process.
Got a replacement plate now and the checkerboard etching on it seems to be way less deep (almost smooth to the touch, just a little bit of friction - which is exactly how it should be in my eyes), last print came out fine for the most part (few small issues with support failure leading to a bit of pancaking, but I didn't have my exposure dialed in perfectly yet).
Still, stuff like this can REALLY ruin your day.
Hope that me and the Mono X will get along better in the long run. I still have my OG Photon as a backup, sure, but as you say, the detail isn't quite up to modern standards and it's just slow as all hell ...

Archvillain’s horde of Gnolls is amazing! It’s what got me to be a member.
I’m mimicking your experience on 3D printing. I went through a period of hating it because of all the failures. One simple hint was to turn it off when not in use and leveling the bed every time. I don’t care if it’s a waste of time. I would rather waste minutes leveling a bed than seeing a failed print 5 hours later.

Have had nothing but problems since i got my Mono X early this year as a gift for myself. Dealing with warranty stuff now because I ruled out personal error after months of burn-out with it and 2000+ml in resin spent on failed prints. There's issues with slicers not slicing right after a windows update and such, too, and despite going through screens like candy my Elegoo Mars Pro with an lcd screen was insanely reliable. Sad to see quality drop for profit margins across a lot of the industry lately

Most of the trouble I had with my Mono X, were caused by Anycubic selling build plates that are flat as the globe. The center of my build plates were both approx. 0.2 mm higher than the corners, but hey now they laser edge these warped plates, at least.

    • @stinkyham9050

I had this exact say issue. My plate was warped and actually ripped through my FEP on a print failure. Resin leaked through tear making a big puddle on the screen and then cure to the screen. I was faced with fixing a printer for hundreds that would still have issues but instead scrapped the whole printer. Got myself an E10 and it works great. Mono X is garbage.

I tricked myself for a minute on ebay when I saw a 6k with wash & cure for a ridiculously low price. Lol. Wish me luck in actually getting started, and with success. I need it for painting as much as building terrain inspired by this channel specifically, as it helps my mental health since I'm disabled and stuck at home too much.

I picked up a photon 2k cheap recently and can get some small things to print, but anything above 32 mm fails. Keep trying to dial it in but find it frustrating. I'm in the canadian rockies so temp may be an issue (but you get success and winnipeg is so balmy...). On the other hand, I got an Anycubic Vyper last summer and it works awesome. I've made tons of great terrain with few fails. It takes a little maintenance, but it seems way easier to get working compared to my experience with resin so far.
