I appreciate you making this video. I mostly agree, but I’ve mostly seen western wear is a bit blurry as to what’s stolen valor or not seeing as how even traditional items are still being worn by the cattle crowd still.
The way you dress imho is fine, I’ve just seen so many guys dressing like they wrangle when they obviously don’t, and if you asked them they’d probably say they don’t. But it’s more of the authenticity thing again, at first glance they’re a wrangler by dressing like a wrangler. If you talk to them it just leaves a bad taste seeing as how they’re basically lying through their clothes. Wrangling isn’t dead, it’s still here in modern times so by dressing in that way it is straight up inauthentic.
I will say gatekeeping fashion is annoying but there is sometimes valid reasons for it. Wrangling is a whole entire lifestyle, hard work, low pay, dangerous but necessary for America. But when someone dresses like they are a wrangler and does a tech job it just feels insulting and like they’re taking something of yours.
I’d say it mostly stems from the fact that I’ve bent over backwards to live in the equine world and then I see someone who hasn’t put forth any effort to come into it but dresses like they did. When I get home caked in horse shit, dirt and my clothes are covered in horse hair the last thing I want is to see someone dressed just like me but with a back that still works full mast, muscles that never ache, no calluses on their hands, lots of money in their pocket, etc. it just feels like a slap in the face of every sacrifice I and every other person in the industry has made to live this lifestyle.
Same issue when I was framing, when I saw someone dressing like me with soft hands it bothered me a lot. It feels like a way to appear more appealing to women without the hard work it takes.
And lastly, this wasn’t supposed to be directed at you. I’m a huge fan of your channel and videos and styles. Keep going with the channel man I do enjoy your content a lot!
This felt like a lot of rambling, and tbh I really don’t know fully where I stand on this issue. I understand freedom of expression is important it’s just hard when that starts blurring those authentic lines and then I’m back in the loop of not knowing fully what to feel about it.
Thank you for the video, I really do appreciate it.

Thanks for the comment. I think your opinion is very balanced and reasonable. I think it’s mainly the difference between people, claiming to be one thing versus the other on the Internet. You’ll see a lot of people wearing dressy western styles, and I could certainly see an argument for saying that people should try to stick to those “nicer “” styles, if they are not actually working in their clothing. Obviously, no one is hurting anyone by wearing pearl snap, shirts, wrangler, jeans, or cowboy boots, but I can certainly see how if someone is wearing the entire specific get up and yet not living a similar at all lifestyle how that could be seen as inauthentic. I think I could also make a strong argument that the classic western and workwear styles of the American west could be considered a mythical or cultural icon within America. Similar to the way that a kimono is in Japan. Even if someone was not wearing a kimono in Japan for a specific ceremony I do not necessarily think it would be inauthentic for them to choose to wear it because they like the way it looks. That is the way the Japanese view traditional American styles. Lots of good thoughts here I would love to hear what you think about these ideas.

One rule of thumb I go with is never go full costume. If I wear a snap button shirt I’ll wear boat shoes with it. Never my cowboy boots. Plaid shirts and boots make me feel like a farmer. I just mash it all up so I dont feel like anything other than myself.

I don’t think I could ever wear boat shoes 🤮
Haha, but in all seriousness I think that’s a fair thought. Personally I don’t really care I love wearing a pearl snap with a cowboy hat and my packer boots. Makes me feel like a cool guy in a movie.

This was such a great perspective on the topic! I totally agree that you can pay homage to a certain style without pretending to be something you’re not!

If you look at old photos of James Dean, Marlon Brando and even Elvis you will see that way back then engineer boots, leather jackets and cuffed jeans were a fashion and not just work wear. Also as an older guy I got interested in engineer boots and leather jackets back when punk was a thing. Just look at any pictures of The Clash, or Sex Pistols.

Yes for sure, i have seen some sources talking about how most leather jackets were mainly for fashion and not actually working since leather can catch and rip so easily.

@@calebgasca the only leather jacket that had an original function was probably the motorcycle jacket, but that was adopted as a fashion item way back in the 60’s and onwards, I’d say that rock music adopted it first and it grew in popularity from there.
I am really liking your videos and I can tell you that the way you wear your stuff proves you have your own look using the clothes that you like. There are definitely a lot of cosplayers out there though and for me personally that is taking it a tad too far, but if they are happy to dress like that, then all the more power to them.
As I said, I’m an older dude who’s witnessed lots of fashion come and go. The heritage/work look is a great take on classic styles made with top quality materials and made to last and I for one can get behind that.

@@marcfischetti5490 I agree 100%, I find myself enamored with classic American myths and I think that classic American style is a part of that. Makes me feel at home in how I dress!
