  • As a “tech” follow up to my “Is Backing Tracks Cheating?” video, I’ve decided to show an easy way for drummers to run the tracks live.
    Equipment required:
    • Small 5 channel personal mixer
    • In-ear monitors or isolation headphones
    • DI Box
    • Stereo “Y” cable
    • 1/4” patch cable
    • Headphone extension cable
    • Device with track files (ex: laptop, iPad, iPhone, iPod, etc.)

    Thanks for the insight man, my setup is pretty similar and you helped clear one of the questions I had. Loved the clip hack for the extension, that is a cheap and affordable way for drummers without the need of another device.

    Great video... I also use my (actual) phone with mp3 mono tracks within Setlist Helper app, controlled with a BT pedal, and it is connected to a Bluetooth receiver, which is, in turn, connected to an XR18 on channels 16 (FOH mix) and 17 (Click & Cues Track).

    Where can I find that cool coffin case? I've looked everywhere. Great vid man! I decided to go the phone route, doesn't make sense for me to be futzing around with a laptop on stage.

      @@bperkins8706 playing to a click for the first time can be a challenge. It’s best to take things slow and simple until you become really comfortable with it. From there you can start to try more elaborate things and push tempos up.

    FINALLY a video that actually shows and explains how to set everything up properly! Question though, if you don't need to mix any of the tracks, could you use an audio interface instead of the mixer? I personally have a behringer ur22c and was wondering if I can still get it to work. Also, do you HAVE to have the DI box?

    • @LivingDeadDrummer
      @LivingDeadDrummer  Рік тому

      You probably could run it with your UR22C, though I’ve never tried. The DI Box I use is really only to provide FOH with an XLR line instead of 1/4” and to give me a return signal for my IEM mix. You can probably bypass all of that if the interface you use has an XLR out.

    Just saw at this video and it's pretty similar to my band's setup but for songs without backing tracks. We just generate a click track in a DAW and export only the click on the left channel (the same channel as the click for our backing tracks) so it's mechanically the same as running a backing track and we don't need to mess with a metronome or anything like that during the show, just hit play on the track like we would if we had backing tracks. It also doesn't need any additional equipment and you don't need to take up two channels for clicks.

    I am currently using a pretty similar setup, but also providing monitoring to the band. But Im running in this issue: Using OVER EAR phones the sound of all instruments are fine, but using IN EAR phones my electric drumkit sounds very bad. Any thought? and which in ear are you using?

    • @LivingDeadDrummer
      @LivingDeadDrummer  6 місяців тому

      @@JoseSilva-bd3xz my in-ears are Ultimate Ears UE11’s.
      If you’re getting a difference in audio quality it could be a few things. Check all your cables first.
      Then check how you have everything connected. If you’re electronic drums are being output by the headphone jack on the module the sound quality will be very different than if you run them out of the main L & R outputs.
      Feel free to write me directly and perhaps send some photos of your setup.

    Thanks for this video!!! I Have panned the tracks Hard Left and Hard right like normal, HOWEVER!!!! I can hear a very very very slight faint bleed for the click.... Its like 5% audible, a soon as My band starts playing you can't hear it but I know it's there, whats the work around for this?

    • @LivingDeadDrummer
      @LivingDeadDrummer  6 днів тому

      @@Johnnycoretv I’ve run into this problem before. It typically occurs when the levels on the click channel are too hot.
      When creating your track files I suggests bringing the level of the click down a few decibels.
      Another work around is not to pan the tracks 100% to one side. Pan them 95% and leave a little bleed on the click end.
      Hope these suggestions help.

    Why would you not want to hear vocals as part of your total mix?

    • @LivingDeadDrummer
      @LivingDeadDrummer  Рік тому +1

      Couple reasons. One, it allows me to focus entirely on the vibe with the Bassist. Make sure we are in sync and grooving. Two, who's the mostly likely to miss rehearsals and skip souncheck? lol. Not having to cue off vocals and just knowing the music inside and out will free you up a lot during a performance. Providing the most solid backbone for your singer in the process.

      What are you using to run the tracks? I know more recent devices by Apple eliminated the headphone jack, but they all have a plug that you can get a headphone adapter for.

    In a situation where you are playing for a band that only has the drummer on a click, how do you handle a break in a song where only the guitar player, for example, plays a part before the band comes back in? Let's just say for a sec, that the guitar player pushes the tempo (which they never do!).. What's the standard way of handling parts of songs where there are no drums in these types of scenarios?
