    Hi Scott! I love your videos, especially your ability to communicate clearly and simply. I am in the middle of switching from using Loop Community to Stage Traxx, and your videos have been invaluable! I am using tracks for classic and 90s rock covers with full band and duo, and a Linkin Park tribute called Hybrid Theory in north Texas. I started out using MainStage which was great but as I play guitar, keys, and run tracks I needed to simplify. Im loving Stage Traxx so far. Thanks again!

    You do a really great job of presenting this information. The Pros and Cons info alone is very helpful. My wife and I have a duo and we use backing tracks on some of our tunes - mainly for private gigs when some party tunes are called for. I've always used the single-track method - click on the left and audio on the right. We mix from the stage. Whenever we've done larger shows involving a sound company, I hand the guy two lines. Sorry, but many sound people are not good and can hurt you. Giving them two lines is darn near foolproof. Here's the MAIN reason I do a single track: Our gig requires a lot of concentration. I'm singing, playing, calling songs on the fly, dealing with the wedding coordinator, talking to the father of the bride, making sure the timeline is followed and much more. There's no way I could deal with mixing multiple tracks and lastly, I'm 100% convinced the audience could not tell the difference. Most of the rooms we play in were never designed to have live music - hotels, country clubs, vineyards, etc. I want it to sound as good as possible but I would never have the time to invest the time into doing multitrack mixes for our tracks - there's no space in my life for dealing with all of that. I mix our tracks in Protools and with new backing tracks I may have to go back and do another mix or two to get balances right, but that's a quick process. CROSS TALK - I've found that whenever I had a cross-talk issue, it was usually something like the click going through an Aux track - like for reverb. I use minimal effects now for our tracks for that reason and also because with these funky rooms we play in sometimes, the last thing you need is reverb in a room with a bad echo or slapback. I can add a touch of reverb from the board in a dry room but I can't take reverb off if it's on the track. Anyway, great info Scott and thanks for investing the time to explain it all clearly. Much appreciated.

    Scott, love your stuff. I also love and use Stage Traxx but now I'm adding in Multitracker and, thanks to a very cool way to trigger Multitracker via Stage Traxx, I'm getting the best of both. The unlimited tracking of Multitracker and the lyrics and playlist set up of Stage Traxx. I'm still overhauling my show to accomplish this (daunting but in the end, I think, worth it) but so far I like the combo of the two. Keep up the great vids, I expand, or at least refresh, my knowledge with each one.

    Hey Scott! Your videos have really helped propel me and my live music gear and techniques. Thanks for all your videos!
    I wanted to share How I currently run backing tracks. I use an iPad and Stage Traxx, connect iPad up to my XR18 via USB and route audio to each of the channels using USB input on the channels instead of the XLR inputs. I also pass through my StageTraxx midi commands through the USB input to the MIDI out of the mixer into my Kemper. A small con of XR18 midi pass through is it disable midi support for the XR18 but pros outweigh cons for me currently!
    TLDR; My Channels 5-8 are my bass, synth, backing vox and eDrums being fed directly from iPad to mixer USB input.

    Great video, Scott.
    I'm in the throes of setting up a live rig - I play piano and guitar (one at a time!) to minus-one tracks and have never done this before. As a guy in his 60s, I'm finding the sheer choice of gear overwhelming, as I've always just used complete backing tracks run straight from the Macbook to the PA alongside the vocal mic, karaoke fashion.
    I found the video accessible and easy to understand, so have liked and subscribed.
    It's early days in getting performance-ready as you have steered me back to the track set up in regard to a solution for not having the click track go FOH - great tip there!
    I'll be looking at your other vids now.
    Great job - thanks again.

    I use a Ketron module, it can play 6 channel wav files, tracks 1 and 2 are grouped to stereo, tracks 3 to 6 are mono, 6 can be routed to aux out, so been used as click/ cue. You can adjust volume for 5 parts.

  • @66fitton
    @66fitton 6 місяців тому

    Very cool! Well explained. One of the reasons I love my X32 so much is that it IS an interface as well as the FOH desk. I can set it up to receive any number of channels from the card (computer) and mix them in as regular channels like they were live. With 16 xlr outs I can keep IEM's stereo if desired.
    And for anyone knocking the X32 for it's pre's, just use the DL32 and your using the Midas pre's that are in it.
    For the money, you can't beat that setup. Cheers

With Windows platform (laptop/tablet) I have configured simple 5.1 USB sound card as 6-channel output interface instead of Track Rig. That way I can have stereo backing track + click/cues separated for PA (front L/R output) and IEM (center/bass output) mapped from a single Cakewalk project. Tnx!

    Incredible walk-through for someone ready to take this step. You are patient and thorough. Seems like you also have videos for those who aren't yet ready to absorb all the jargon just yet but this hit perfectly at the right place and time for me. For other lurkers: I'm the kind of lurker who doesn't go out of the way (sorry not sorry) to comment unless I feel 1) I should warn others for the sake of humanity to avoid a bad experience or 2) guilty to have accessed new knowledge which clearly I didn't deserve. This video is the latter. I subscribed and liked so hopefully those two actions contribute to advertisers footing the bill for this guy. 10/10. Will watch again.🙌

    this is an amazing channel. I am a career old school pianist/keyboardist and have been recently asked to play in a duo but asked to run tracks, which I have never done before. So your channel has been amazing. I have a dumb question. Being a pianist I get asked for requests all the time. Most of the time I know them, if I don't I can work fudge through them by whacking chords/lyrics up on my iphone (great for tips) Would you ever do a request if you dont have the track available, eg. just acoustically? I was thinking of even just having a track with a kick drum as I can cover the bass, chords on piano and vocals!

    Hey Scott, awesome video once again!
    I started using Multitracker once I saw your video, but would really love to use Stage Traxx 3 because it offers way more features I can use. The only reason I haven't is because ST3 doesn't offer the option to create tracks with a click (like Multitracker does).
    This is important for my band because we only use backing tracks on about 5 songs, the rest we use the click to keep the in check as far as the tempo goes.
    Anyway sorry for venting 😅, just hope ST3 adds in that feature soon. It would really be a major plus!
    Thanks again!

    • @jcabelair7749
      @jcabelair7749 11 місяців тому +1

      It's actually pretty simple to create/export a click track. I do it in Reaper but I'm sure all the other Draws can do this: Set your Daw metronome how you like it then route it to an empty track that is set to record. Export that track as {click.mp3} along with your other stems. Easy Peasy, and maybe Scott can include that in a vid if he hasn't already--I'm still working my way thru all of them 😂

  • @johnstraley9057

    Great video, Scott. I came away learning more than anticipated. We run tracks using the single file method from an iPad using Sound Cue, and also keep a backup iPad using Stage Traxx3. Started with WAV files and eventually settled on using the higher resolution MP3 format. Both the drummer and myself (bassist) get the click so that if the drummer misses the count-in, I can cue the band on the count. The other band mates aren't cool with hearing the click track in their in-ears.

    • @ScottUhlMusic
      @ScottUhlMusic  11 місяців тому

      Sound Cue IMO presents itself in a more straight forward manner and is simple to use. Otherwise Stage Traxx3 will get the job done.

    I'm using a hybrid method - multitrack backing tracks on an iPad in StageTraxx 3, but I'm only using the headphone out. Tracks on left, click/cues on right. With multitracks, I can mute or unmute as needed without needing different version of backing track files. This way if I'm practicing, I've got drums, bass and all backing tracks on. If I'm with a full band, I can mute drums and bass. If I have a drummer, but no bass player, mute drums, but unmute bass. This also gives me the flexibility to add an audio interface down the road. EDIT - I see you covered this at the end of the video.

    You’re right about mp3 quality, but there is a slight cpu advantage to use PCM files like wav, there’s nothing for the cpu to decode, it’s all just streaming through the audio subsystem. The overhead is slight, but remember that you have 5-6 tracks, so you multiply this overhead.
    Still maybe not noticeable it your iPad could handle many more streams simultaneously in PCM than compressed audio.

    the cross talk is usually a problem with karaoke versions download. If you have it building a track while still downloading another one sometimes it will get cross talk. Also some mp3 players will cache a version so say you download the drums and click together by mistake and open it in apple music, then write over that file with just the drums, you will still hear the drums and click until you clear the apple music cache directory.

My tracks are built on Garage Band, Mastered on AudioMaster App. In Garageband, there is a ECHO and REVERB that applies globally, so what happens is any of the LEFT panned tracks with effect added will end up bleeding the effect onto the RIGHT with the click. Hi, first of all I wanted to congratulate you on your videos.... Really interesting, well done and educational.
    My need is for live use with my band. 20 years ago I was using a pc with a m audio firewire 410 with which I used to manage stereo backing tracks, drummer clicks + vst instruments played live, all driven by cubase.
    Now it's been 20 years (in which I've been away from gigs) and I'm undecided on what to buy.
    I have 3 macbook pro's at home so I could use one of them for audio.
    I don't need to record: I just want to be able to manage backing tracks and simultaneously play vst instruments live (using main stage or gig performer or something... I'll have to look into that too).
    So I'll need at least 4 outputs (using the backing tracks in mono on one channel and the click on another channel + 2 stereo channels for vst).
    The idea is to get a soundcard that I can then also use in the future if I decide to switch to ipad (to lighten up the equipment).
    I also need to connect at least two keyboards via midi, and this I could do by adding a usb hub.
    I also need traditional midi inputs because I have an old keyboard that doesn't send control changes via USB but only via the midi outputs (although I could probably use a midi to USB cable).
    Currently what sound cards do you feel like recommending for the use I need?
    Thanks in advance

    Hey Scott, you have lots of great videos that are helping my bass player and I . We are doing a two man band with backing tracks I made, to make us sound like a full band. It's kind of a half and half thing with the drums, keys and harmonies I sung on one backing track while we do the main vocal, guitar and bass live. Right now we are using the whole dmxis thing with show buddy but we're looking at ditching the pc somehow. Right now show buddy is sending out the midi commands to the XR18 along with controlling my HX stomp Xl. No more dancing for me lol It's obviously controlling the lights as well. The bass player has all the lights pre programmed to each song. So now with wanting to ditch the PC, we are thinking we should be able to save what we got done in Show buddy as midi files and somehow put it on a device that can still control everything instead of the PC. We seen your vid on the Bbeat and that's definitely an option but we're also looking at controlling it all with our tablets. Unfortunately we only have android tablets so we'll have to chose another option rather than stage traxx. Maybe something like Stage Assistant, might do the job. We also have the Boss RC 10r for throwing the backing tracks on when playing a set somewhere with a house system but I'm not sure how much that can help for what we eventually want. Anyway, we'll figure it out and your video's are a great guide with many options. Thanks again Shawn

We are thinking of moving away from DAW/computer setup to make the sets a little more free flowing. We use an iPad with multitracker for practices. I was wondering if you would recommend using a Bluetooth transmitter connected to the iPad, then hardwired to the mixer, to run tracks. Should the stems of the backing tracks be sent through a DAW with an audio interface? How can you match the latency between the stems of the backing tracks that are sent through output to the PA (main sound system) and the live-played instruments sent via input to another output of the interface with activated VSTs (for example, backing tracks sent through 2 outputs of the interface and instruments played through the inputs like guitars, bass, or even microphone processed and sent to another output of the interface with VSTs of the DAW activated)?
    Also, can the vocals be processed too via input of the interface with VSTs activated to be sent via output to the PA without latency or feedback at the venue?

      Outputting shouldn’t be a problem with latency, that should be pretty simple, and computers don’t have a problem playing audio. It’s when you start adding a lot of plugins that you just need to make sure you have a strong enough computer to handle all of that with minimal latency and more importantly, that it doesn’t crash because of overloading it 👍

The B.Beat looks like the perfect solution interms of multiple outputs, fewer adapters to break, and it's smaller, probably less fragile and definitely much cheaper than my apple stuff if it gets damaged.

    Hi!!!
    I'm using the L and R approach to route the click and the musical track. The issue is that in same parts of the song I can hear the click coming out from the main speakers. I've double checked the panning in the file and it's 100% to the Left the click and 100% to the right for the backing track. I'm using AUDACITY as an editing tool for the files. Any piece of advice would be appreciated.
    You rock with these videos. Cheers!

      Man, I really need to research this because I hear this a lot. But check the cable and check to make sure the plugins are not on the files or anything like that (although im not sure audacity has it)… that’s my best advice I have for it until I look into it further because I don’t have this problem

      Drum roll🥁. It's the quality of the sound card in the device.. Example
      Apple devices no problem.
      Some Samsung devices - low end modules- you will have issues.
      Same with tables... it's not your editing tool like protocols or audacity. It's the device!

    Perfect video again! One question: Did you have any issue using iPad adapter to USB/power charger when connecting to the USB-B interface? Or do you plug them directly with the cable without any adapter? My iPad loses connection with the Soundcraft Ui24R USB interface a lot and I think the problem is the adapter. What you say? Note: I use a similar adapter, not the original Apple....

      Adapters are so weird. I JUST had my iPad not connect yesterday after the first song. Only time that’s ever happened. I changed a setting mid song, so I believe that’s why. If the cable is too long sometimes it can disconnect as well. So that can be annoying for sure! Cables are weird why some work and some don’t with tablets.

    Great video and really information yet again Scott. I use Garage band as my DAW and Multitracker 2.2 on an iPad with two DI boxes and a Behringer Xenyx 802S mixing desk. We send the drummer the click and the FOH the tracks but we always seem to get crosstalk from the click despite it being panned to the right from the DAW and on the Desk. The splitter cable is the RED one for the click so not sure why this is happening? Any ideas or solutions would be greatly appreciated Pal. TIA

    Hey scott, I just wanted to ask, you have alot of videos showing how to run backing tracks live. With all of your experience and knowledge with these different methods, what have you settled on as your main routing of your backing tracks? Do you send stage traxx audio playback over usb into your X32 behringer? Also do you have everything seperately sent into the behringer ? Or just the LR main mixdown from stage traxx app? ...
    Lastly, do you continue to use the Ultranet port output into the Midas 4816 as your go to splitter? Or have you decided to continue snake split/rack split prior to x32? Thank you!!!!!!
    YOUR VIDEOS ARE AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • @ScottUhlMusic
      @ScottUhlMusic  2 місяці тому

      Thanks! And I’ve settled on stage Traxx 3, usb into my mixer with multitracking. Occasionally for solo sets I’ll send just tracks L and click R, that’s what is great about stage Traxx, it only takes a second to change that.
      And I still use the Midas 4816O as my splitter. It works very well!

    • @Sneakyybstrd
      @Sneakyybstrd 2 місяці тому

      Dude thanks for the reply!!! Your awesome man. This has helped me so much with building my iem rig and live rig for my band.
      I was hesitant about the 4816O bc theres always that one person that stands up and says but they are all line level signals and that will piss off some sound guys. But all our stuff is line level anyways, kemper x2, back tracks, synthesizer.
      So you still run stereo to the FoH for your back tracks out you just merge and send mono when it comes out of the x32?
      Lastly do you know anyone who does x32 mixing for live band setups?

    Great video Scott, by the way like everyone else. Lately I've been using the single track method with the Behringer P1, where through the phone player, I send the click/cue into the L input with the splitter cable and then with a DI, I send the BT to the main mixer, which I can then receive with other instruments, in the other input of the P1. Certainly, as you say, there are limitations... but for what I'm doing this combination is very useful to me and above all at a small expense. The only negative thing is that sometimes I also have problems with a slight crosstalk... I would like to use Stage Traxx, mostly to mix tracks in real time, but unfortunately I don't use Apple, I'm hoping for an update for Android. Anyway, have you ever used the ShowOne app? If yes, what do you think? (ps, my dream would be the B.Beat) Cheers from Italy!

So will the drummer hear both the clicks and the tracks in their ears? or just the click. Srry for commenting so much on your stuff. Hey Scott, great video. Question: If my tracks are on stereo, for the 1st method to work properly should I render the tracks to mono first before panning?
    And an alternative to use splitter cable, the cues and click can go to another D.I to another input in the console and then send that input internally like a director's microphone.

      @@ScottUhlMusic You would still render the tracks as mono and pan if doing multi-track through the track rig as well right? So you would only have one channel of the 1/2 from the track rig coming out in mono? Otherwise you could lose something coming from the right side (channel 2) in this example right?

I actually just right now tried to reproduce this, played click track from my phone to Behringer audio interface, left = click, right = nothing, but even with all gains and outputs possible maxed out, no click in right channel. Surely it depends on playback device too? I recall one gig where we had this exact problem, bass recording had noticeable (when soloed) click sound burned into it. Still wondering how that happened, maybe something wrong with cabling there.

    Awesome video, one question: I use the multi-track setup with my band but I've been getting CrossTalk on most every audio interface I've used.
    Setup => Macbook Air
    Audio Interface 1: Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 gen2
    Audio Interface 2: Behringer UMC 1820
    Audio Interface 3: Behringer UMC HD404
    Click is not being send to ANY of the 10 ouputs but still on for example my output 1 + 2 which is my guitar (Guitar -> Input 1 -> Line 6 Helix VST -> Stereo Out 1 + 2) i can slightly hear the click track in the background while the project is playing on my guitar signal.
    Also on output 3 + 4 (Backing Tracks L + R) I can hear it if I really boost/gain the signal.
    Also we have the SAME problem on our laptop Macbook Pro ...... kinda lost here
    Live it hasn't been a audible problem but I know that they are there.

    • @ScottUhlMusic
      @ScottUhlMusic  11 місяців тому

      That is extremely bizarre…. You’ve gone over all the steps needed in order to check it… try disabling the click completely muting it and see if it still happens? There really is no way for it to be routed that way unless something really went wrong, so I’m stumped

    • @DrummClem
      @DrummClem 11 місяців тому

      Hey ! I've had the exact same issues. We had click bleed into the backing tracks & bass outs.
      We are using :
      - Reaper as a DAW
      - The focusrite 18i20 to send separate tracks : stereo backing tracks, bass, click, cues
      We managed to make it almost silent by tweaking inside the Focusrite control software, by lowering the click and cues enough.
      But if it happend with all you interfaces, I'm afaraid it's also gonna happen with the XR18 which we plan to use as an interface as well...
