I think ideal snake length is 2, because that grants the front invulnerability. There might be some cheese potential there. I actually think the giant diamondback train could be useful on The Dig, just have a huge snake coiled around the laser drill and you can safely blast all the Colossi and Archons
I'd love a Diamondback train on Supernova ! Honestly, if Regenerative bio-steel exists and is decent, the Grandmasterback snake might be really strong, since they force the enemy to change target so often, so they rarely die.
If the leader of the snake is invulnerable then this unit should be good to push defenses that player shouldn't be able to push, just make sure that second diamondback behind it is out of reach of defenses.
The dig. The unranked back hits the majority of the things and what it doesn't hit missile turrets hit the rest. They can be an early attack force as the majority of the threats are ground and they attack while moving so in theory no longer can be hit by colossus. Outside of that maybe ground zerg as a mini attack force but not when massed. That's all I got.
Moebius Factor would probably be decent for it (depending on how hard corruptors hit it) The Dig too for high ground spotting to gut the protoss base while not getting shot by immortals.
On the mission where you control the Odin, Diamondbacks could be good if you take out the air-base first so that you only really have to deal with ground units.
Individual Skittle Marines are probably worse than Individual Blue Bois, but the combination of them I would argue puts them far above. You'd start with a majority of high DPS Yellow Marines The Tanky Red Marines I think have a shorter range than the others making them naturally put themselves to the front of a formation And once there's too many Yellow Marines for them to easily engage, you start using Orange Sniper Marines at the back. Honestly I did a Diamondback only run some time ago and it's honestly crazy the amount of destruction those things can output, especially if you get the upgrade that increases HP and armour making them way less vulnerable. You don't even need the attack speed upgrade, because with almost 200 supply worth of Diamondbacks, you won't have time to use all the guns in the pain train anyway since nothing will get past the mid point of the blob. Not being able to attack air isn't even that bad since with fire on the move you can just.... keep going.
Predators are great as a 1-2 of for being perma-cloaked and just running around picking shit up. I wasn't playing on brutal, but I found the diamondbacks quite usable in later missions with the armory upgrades. They can hit both air and ground with upgrades and have regen, making them pretty self-sufficient, and running the snake through things, along with the leader being invulnerable, helps spread damage out (you can even snipe things a bit by moving only the leader into range and abusing the invuln). A decent chain basically turns them into battlecruisers but cheaper.
Not sure how viable it would be to programme in but a couple thing that could make the Rankback (name pending) more viable could be: (1) Making it instead so that only the head vulnerable or giving shields to all but the head - making it a weakpoint instead but adding protection to the entire rest of the body. Perhaps balancing it by requiring it to be in motion to be able to attack at all. (2a) On reaching a high enough rank gaining an "Ouroboros formation" command where it performs a tight circular patrol pattern hovering over enemies and raining down its laser fire. (2b) Expanding on 2, a potentially absurdly powerful addition could be making it so that while in motion it blocks enemy ground units from passing underneath it.
