I was 72 when I first took up mtb and although could ride a bike that is all. Now 77, and over time have been gradual teaching myself jumping, 6 months ago I sent it on the biggest jump with the steepest ramp here and came to as they were loading me into the Ambulance ., survived ok and back riding in 2 weeks. The thing is I have dialed it back but one of the things that happens to me on a good jump is I start to float off my Pedals as if my body is jumping higher than my bike. The other thing is do you jump differently on a steep ramp jump compared to where its just a normal big track jump without the ramp, as this is what I've been doing. We don't have any kind of clinics here in Townsville Queensland, you just have to learn on your own. ps, I've had A Rocky Powerplay for over 2 years.
So if you now let go of the bike, then momentarily pose as superman pancake fashion whilst in the air and then grab the bike back and land perfectly you will have one of the best tricks down. If you don't get back on the bike however I fear the worst and that ambo won't be able to help. Boy and I thought I was too old getting back into mtbing at 53.

Rich, i dont agree with your drop technique, but learning to recognize these 7 mistakes really helped me in my training yesterday. Got a new subscriber today.
This is really good, I agree with all of the points. The 'don't lift the bike' can be broken into two items imo; 1. Don't pull on the bars - this is what can cause the body to extend up and away from the bike, and contribute to hips moving back. 2. Don't bunnyhop - this takes away from the LOADING into the jump and so can lead to feet coming off pedals and the body extending away from the bike. (Easily noticeable if someone points their toes downwards in the air) The better you get, the more you can reintroduce the above techniques, but they should never be the primary method for jumping, they serve their own purposes, but will throw you off when done incorrectly and result in mistakes if used before you're ready.
when I first started riding, I legit always had my hips too far back and felt like my bike was going higher and almost leaving my hands. it was a pretty scary feeling but now after watching this I find it much easier when my hips are over the bottom bracket. appreciate Rich

Great stuff as always Rich. It has to be difficult to tell your mind and body to do it the wrong way, when you're so used to doing it the right way! Keep 'em coming dude!
Just watched this again after the video you made with Sarah and Brian (BKXC). My biggest mistake Drew is coming in as you describe loading the bike up on the face and then pushing the bars down as the front tire leaves the face and then soaking up the jump by bending my knees and crouching down towards the bike before the rear wheel is off the face of the jump. Serious OTB situation ensues.
I went off a jump at the end of last season and landed front wheel first and went over the handlebars. I have no idea why this happened. I also saw this happen with someone else when he was practising going off a drop. I couldn't help explain this either. He said it had something to do with his shocks. We both knew about the neutral hips/body position because we were taught this. It was my understanding that landing on both wheels is ideal. Please elaborate more on the front wheel first landing or create a video on how not to go over the handlebars on drops/jumps. Thanks!
Rich Drew yup! Was in hot springs AR last few days trying out the trails. If you haven’t had the chance go try out a trail called “lucky 13”. Would love to see a video on that!

@@richdrewtherideseries - Hey Rich, the ones that stood out where pedaling to deep into the jump, I use to lift the bike but stopped that after watching your how to jump vid ;) and probably having my hips to far back at times. Hey Rich, I'm a local 35 year old that wants to get into mountain biking. Im athletic, but don't ride much. I wanna learn to hit the trails and learn all the tricks (jumps, wheelies, manuals). If you wanna do a series where you teach someone live, I would love to be your student!
Something about Rich’s no bull talking and teaching is great , especially as I’m going thru my third midlife crisis learn to jump properly in my fifties 🤟😎🤟
I tried my first jump today and the bike landed a little sideways and felt very unstable. Then I found the how to video on jumps and realized I was picking the bike up. I am definitely giving that another go again tomorrow.
@@richdrewtherideseries Well, I tried loading into the jump, and was more stable but I didn't catch any air, lol. I will keep trying but with more speed. I will practice some small bunny hops first.
7:50 it's so when we land are feet push into the peddles, and more stable when landing by having a lower mass. and when going down hills its natural to do this, so when seeing a landing my body leans back so i dont go flying over the bars. its not right but its why we do it.
@@richdrewtherideseries I live in Edinburgh so 30 mins from the Tweed Valley a real mecca for the mtb scene. It has trail centre's at Glentress and Innerleithen the later having uplift! It gem thou is the natural locally build train system it is just mint. We are quite rightly in ,lockdown so only localised XC type riding permitted which is fine. Keep the edits coming and I will be sure to watch. Just heading for a wee whisky the washing my bike. Stay safe 😎
Man, thanks Spy Burner! My wifes been saying that I'm a "legend in my own mind" for quite some time now, but I like how you phrase it better ;) Just trying to do what I can to help people gain some confidence, be safer, and have more fun!
I think "don't lift" needs to be accompanied with the advise to allow the bike to come up under the rider after takeoff by keeping arms and legs flexible and relaxed, which are then extended for a controlled landing. This often feels like you're pulling up on the bike for a beginner, but you're really just allowing it to happen by relaxing the arms and legs. I'd probably rather see a beginner pulling a little vs stiff-arming it and dead-sailoring.
David Cahoon Thanks for the input David. I agree with the first part of your statement and I think mistake 6 touches on that. In the text of the video I alluded to this being the “base layer” of mistakes. What you are explaining would come in the next layer in my opinion.
Hey Zenergy! The principle is very similar, you just don't have the benefit of rear suspension. This means you are much more reliant on loading with your legs and hips, then opening up the hips on the takeoff.
Can't argue with the S-Works, but what happened with your Troy? Thanks for the pointers. Im still hoping on getting to Bentonville sometime. Take care.
OK, tell me about a combination of #5 - don't put hips back combined with #7 - not back wheel hitting first. I was sessioning Wonderland yesterday and got dialed in to this routine of a good launch then, coming down I'd get my hips over the back wheel to throw the bike forward and push the front wheel down, trying to land both wheels at once. If I'm not over the back wheel I feel in danger of going over the bars. Seems like weight-over-the-back-wheel has always been my safe place go-to position in sand or downhill over rocks. Not good?
How about some practical jumping tips? 1) Wheel choice for bigger riders who get tired of adjusting spokes and buying new rims, 2) How to deal with local trail associations that don't understand why anyone would want jumps on the trails, 3) how to practice flairs, 180's, flips without an air bag and without broken bones and #1.
Great video Rich. This really helped and I’m making good progress. One question: where do you look during takeoff and while in the air? I find myself looking straight ahead with my head upright. But in these vids you appear to be looking down, maybe at your landing target? Can you confirm this and do you think it makes a difference? Maybe this is the “8th mistake”?! Thanks from Virginia!
Hey there! Thanks for the feedback! As far as vision, I prefer to eye up my landing. Once I'm confident that everything i've done has set me up for that, I bring my gaze up to get back to what's ahead of me.
The amount of times you show a good jump makes this video very helpful

Very good. Love how you had the skill to do it all wrong and survive!
Haha, thanks Johnny!! Keep me posted on how it's going my man!
Rich Drew Ha thanks man ! Sure will , keep up your great work !👊
Nice ones Rich, thanks!
Thank you! I was pretty pumped with this one. I think these 7 mistakes really resonate with most people.
Excellent instruction!
So helpful info thanks RD!!!!
Jonathan Bautista You know it Jonathan!! So glad it helped. Keep me updated on your progress.
I would love to see a video on drops especially ones that angle down prior to the drop. Thanks!
Mister, you've just earnt yourself a new subscriber.
Heck yeah David!! Thank you!
I tried my first jump today and the bike landed a little sideways and felt very unstable. Then I found the how to video on jumps and realized I was picking the bike up. I am definitely giving that another go again tomorrow.
Heck yeah! How did it go?
@@richdrewtherideseries Well, I tried loading into the jump, and was more stable but I didn't catch any air, lol. I will keep trying but with more speed. I will practice some small bunny hops first.
7:50 it's so when we land are feet push into the peddles, and more stable when landing by having a lower mass. and when going down hills its natural to do this, so when seeing a landing my body leans back so i dont go flying over the bars. its not right but its why we do it.
RD great edit watching in Scotland🇬🇧
Kevin Wood Hey Kevin. Thank you so much. Pumped you’re watching in Scotland! How’s the riding there?
@@richdrewtherideseries I live in Edinburgh so 30 mins from the Tweed Valley a real mecca for the mtb scene. It has trail centre's at Glentress and Innerleithen the later having uplift! It gem thou is the natural locally build train system it is just mint.
We are quite rightly in ,lockdown so only localised XC type riding permitted which is fine. Keep the edits coming and I will be sure to watch.
Just heading for a wee whisky the washing my bike. Stay safe 😎
Excellent video
Mark CZECHALIEN Thank you Mark!
Good video Rich!
Thanks Keith!
legend and great energy
Man, thanks Spy Burner! My wifes been saying that I'm a "legend in my own mind" for quite some time now, but I like how you phrase it better ;) Just trying to do what I can to help people gain some confidence, be safer, and have more fun!
Awesome video. Wish I was closer to do a ride series with you.
Ok I can admit to three! Makes sense and now I need to see if I can clear hammer at silver with out case fest 2020
Haha 😂 bro, the rigor Mortis was awesome. Good vid
Thanks Luke! Rigor Mortis is an all too common one dude.
Great how to video 👍
Norman Mitchell Thanks Norman!!
Excellent vid my dude 🤘🏽
Thanks Casey! I was happy with how it turned out
That guy at 6:41 completely disrespecting your steez... but great jumping tips!
Dr. J MTB Dang, I just realized that 🤦♂️🤷🏻♂️
It’s ok, not everyone is into the steez!
I definitely try to pull up on take off! Landings do get ‘interesting’!
Do you essentially pump it, ease off the bike (maintaining contact) and hang on to lift the bike and ready for landing? If that makes sense.
I like this guy!
Todd Merriott I like you as well Todd 😉👊🏻
Great tips 🤟🏽 I’m making all those mistakes 😂
OnaBicy Slowly start to address them and let me know how it goes 👊🏻
Solid tips, thx! Does the loading principle vary for a hardtail with BMX flat pedals...?
Hey Zenergy! The principle is very similar, you just don't have the benefit of rear suspension. This means you are much more reliant on loading with your legs and hips, then opening up the hips on the takeoff.
@@richdrewtherideseries Thanks Rich! Returning to dirt jumps after 22 years. Mingya :-D
Can't argue with the S-Works, but what happened with your Troy?
Thanks for the pointers. Im still hoping on getting to Bentonville sometime. Take care.
Hey MT! The Troy is sitting safely in the garage, just getting on as many bikes as I can my man. Would love to have you here soon!
Ummm Rich, what Stumpjumper is that!? It looks siiiiiick!
Hey dude! It's a limited edition OZ Trails version. They did three of them and they are RAD!! S Works, AXS build
Damn, that rig is sweeeet! Keep killin it, Rich!
Haha, I love it!! So on point here. Working on #3 now ;)
Great video Rich.
@@richdrewtherideseries thanks for the response! Great channel btw. Subbed!
Damn i’m doing all of these aaaaarrrgghh. Great tutorial thanks.
You’re very welcome Paul. Just slowly start to check them off one by one and let me know how it goes 👊🏻
Thanks for sharing! Let’s see some hardtail videos 👍
Coming soon!
