@@choanlpoto I was thinking the same thing. So well explained. I think everyone gets obsessed with pulling hard with the arms, and that always seems to end with guaranteed instability in the air because you never quite pull perfectly aligned. This is spot on.
Awesome! This is probably the best tutorial that I’ve watched on that elusive timing. Adding more slowmo views of the loading-to-open transition would take it up a notch. Thanks Rich!

Thanks Donal!! It was a fun video to make and Jennifer is a rad chick! This template really works because it's as real as we can make it. I'll see if we can get her back in a bit.
Best explanations ever, my take - heels down are an input that translate up to where the core/torso will be going (the desired direction vs opposite) and the bike will follow.
Great video. LOVE the detailed, step-by-step break down. Watching videos on other channels, I come away with questions. You anticipate the questions and answer them before I can think of them. Nice work!
Thanks for that video, really helpfull ! 👍 Rich, at 17:08, when it's happen to me, i always do a self high five 👏🤭. I love the way you teach riding🤘Grettings from France !
Hey Rich, just wanted to reach out and say thanks for these videos. I'm local to Bentonville and got into the Mountain Biking scene recently. Our crew (of absolute beginners) actually bumped into you and Parker at the Ravine trail and Ozone last Saturday while y'all were filming. Anyhow, I am sure we'll run into each other again at some point (hopefully soon!). More power to you, sir!
I have just saved your video in my playlist where I keep good instruction videos that I wanna share with beginners of my fb group. I guess that says everything. Thanks for the effort and upload!
Let me add a comment now.... your series has really helped me.. last week we cleared, with steeze, an 18ft table (biggest jump yet) and today the same one and 2x steep faced jumps... wish I could show you the clips... Keep it up dude
Amazing Rich, I learned a lot from this video, from the mistakes of her and the perfect way of coaching of you, step by step, lot of my previous confusion got cleared up here through this video. hope to see more video like this with a student like this who makes mistakes and then follow instruction and correct herself, that gives us opportunity to learn, by pausing, slowing down play back speed of the video.subscribed and liked.
Another great video Rich! A few buddies and I will be coming up there Nov. 11-15th to enjoy riding those awesome trails. Maybe we'll run into you out there.
I definitely need to catch a ride series. I crashed hard earlier in the week. It was a 5ft drop. Everything felt good until I crashed. I'm so glad I was wearing my pads.
Amazing tips mate. Can't wait to hit the trails tomorrow and try to put some of that theory into practice. Just started mountain biking this summer and am committed to learning how to jump before winter set's in! Fingers crossed!-)
Awesome tutorial. Bentonville is amazing. Went in 2019. I will catch one of your clinics next time we go. For the love of God, please tell this girl to get long finger gloves, a proper jersey (like one of yours), some baggy shorts, and some proper MTB eyewear!
What's wrong with her shorts and shirt? Don't baggy shorts catch on the saddle and risk accidents? I use shorts (along w/ my biking shorts) that are tight in the crotch area so they don't snag on the saddle. I have zero issues with them. Also, why a jersey? I use moisture wicking T-shirts. Although they dry quicker than cotton shirts they are still drenched in sweat when I'm done riding. Do jerseys keep from getting drenched with sweat? If so, i may buy one to try out.
Awesome video...there are some great MTB UA-cam channels out there but I'm not sure any of them bring as much value as this one does...if ppl watch and apply these techniques, they WILL IMPROVE!!! Trust me 😉
What a great video just subscribed i have been riding for along time xc, trail centres, natural stuff, red, some blacks & blue trails and have a youtube channel but need to work on my jumping skills as i have started to go to Bike Parks in the UK. This video is perfect for looking at how to take off to get air on jumps and table tops. 👍
Great video. I have to focus more on the heels. I take this to also mean the heels are down as you're pushing through? getting the torso back has been the hardest part of the method to follow for me.
Hey Chris! Pushing through the heels keeps the bike in an upward trajectory longer, the bike will roll forward as the feet roll forward and toes point down. Gravity and Physics also help this out ;)
Rich. Whats up bro. Rich on the 12 minute You talk about not to pull with the arms and I learned the hard way in the past. Now, what have I never understood is when to use the bunny hop technique on jumps because even though I am not not pulling the bar the actual move of the bunny hop makes the bar comes to my waist. When I do the bunny hop on a flat ground It comes out perfect but If do It on jumps It seems that I am pulling the bar and I land awkward. So, Is it possible to put out a video putting together the jumping and bunny hop technique?
Hey Miguel! Man, that’s a tough one to answer, but I’ll see what I can do. Maybe try driving your heels down longer on the takeoff. Essentially your arms will end up relatively straight once you are coming off the takeoff.
Man good stuff! I have a hard tail, will these same principles still apply? I'm still confused about driving your heels as I pedal just forward of my arch on the pedals. I'll keep working on it though. Thanks peace out!
Hey Rich, you are a great teacher! I would benefit from content with more slow mo and lines/ sketches. Pointing out errors and remedies directly from the action. Great work!
Sounds like I might be pulling the bars sometimes still. 100% of my jump crashes have been dumping to the right, and most have been due to tilting to the right side and landing tilted, and I probably dead-sailored midair due to recognition that I was coming down tilted, and that probably didn't help
Hey Rich, should i start learning how to do this on flats? im usually clipped in but i dont attempts jumps/drops much yet. i think its more of a mind games thing being clipped in. i want to go to your clinic really bad i need to to come to texas in like july/august haha
Heels down, load into the base not the face... but Trailbikes did teach me something... Your more likely to do damage jumping than most other tricks... I managed to stay out of hospital for my 1st 20 odd years of motorbikes (until a week before my 40th.. but that was high siding on a fairly flat paddock) but the next one was a double that I completed 95%... the last 5% was the top of the 2nd bump that kept the bike from completing the jump with me... I guess where I'm going with that is... Jumps are fun... Knowing how to jump and land... important... but don't forget... You don't NEED to do big jumps if your having issues. Find a nice small un complicated jump.. and jump the heck out of it until its so easy its boring... then move up a little. I actually did my 1st gap today.. but I still avoid them in the wild... because I can. Single to flat or tabletop, a lot easier... and a lot more forgiving if messed up.... I've got a lot more messing up before I'll ever be confidant on doubles... but hey I'm just out for fun.
