The fastest chain gang I know of is the Pappas ride in Perth, Australia. All the local world tour riders turn up for it, and the local hitters, and it's really quick. However, it's only once a year - on Boxing Day - so it's a bit of a special event. It even gets a big crowd of local riders watching it.
'North of the UK' - crikey Hank, barely out of the midlands. Am even further north and still an hour south of Scotland. Glad you survived your time with the wildlings, good effort :)
As an American, it was great to watch. Nice job Hank as always and to Russ who still has the 'spark'. One of the interesting things I have learned competing in different sports is, you just can't pick the best or fastest guy, or girl, out of a line up. Most Americans are from European ancestry and when we watch, we feel kinship.
Our local (Grimsby) group ride was often harder than the (Vets) races we used to do, it's a great way to get fit. Ridden with Russ a time or two as well, top bloke.
It's like a parody of the 'Four Yorkshiremen' sketch, but on bikes. "It's reet cold, but only southern wusses wear gloves. Isn't that so, Arkwright?" "Ay, me finger's just dropped off with frostbite, but I didn't stop to pick it up, not on the Donny chaingang."
My Saturday group is more designed for safety in numbers and duration rather than speed. Over time this group has dragged me into the distance and now I do not think much of doing an Imperial Iowa gravel century ride. This has transferred strength towards my XC skiing where I will do 2 half's plus one full XC ski marathon on a long weekend during peak ski season 😊
Funny, we have a fast saturday group ride where I live in france as well that has been around for longer than anyone can remember but at least since the early 70s. Each week there is at least a couple of pros showing up, and youll have a lot of retired pros so at any saturday youll have like 20 grand tour finishes in the group shared between the riders. always fast and brutal but at least it stops for punctures unless its your first time.
These "Saturday Morning World Championship" rides are everywhere, no? Some use 'em for training, others to buff up egos. I always wonder how many of these folks ever pin-on numbers and race for real? My guess is a small number.
Great Video - clever to film it! Russel Downing - legend! Anyone watched ex Leeds Chain Gang? I used to join in & try to hang on as long as possible - sometimes as many as 40 riders including TDF riders like Albert Hitchin & Bernarde Burns, Barry Hoban used to join in during his winter off season b reak. Great schooling for knowing how to ride in a group, follow wheels, shelter from the wind etc. Sprint for the 30 sign at lawnswood north side of Leeds at the end!
I think this exists in every country. In Belgium there is one too. When I raced I use to join them to get some speed training in. Always good fun. They did a 10km tour, so you could drop, catch your breath and pick back. Good times
The chaingang (Saturday & Tuesday) was absolutely mega. Tbh Tuesday was the harder ride I’d say. I’m too old, slow & far away to ride these anymore. Great times though.
It’s fun to see people doing this, but there’s utterly no way I could ever do it. I avoid group rides to begin with. And I don’t have the kind of bike that would allow me to keep up (even if I had the legs and lungs for it).
The hardest group rides I ever did were in Canberra. Bakery Bunch, Hour of Power, Hour of Terror... Not sure how they compete with this one, but they were definitely tough.
How many egos popping off on here. “Err this isn’t fast” or “ours is faster” haha. Calm down, you’re just riding a bike. That’s the problem with cycling groups “way too much ego”.
Would not term these things as club rides runs , Also called the Bash in some areas. They are smash fests on and off . A newbie would soon be ejected out of the rear of it.
Tom pidcock has never ridden donny CG, Tom is a Leeds CG boy. Would put Leeds CG above this for effort. Donny is pretty much flat, Leeds cg has a 2 mile hill in it at 4%. 500w needed for 4m :30s to get up with the fast lads. 🔥
Oh, James, why put yourself through such pain every video. May your Christmas video be "single malt testing for evening recovery resting"... Maybe include some cheeses ;-)
Good video, but it'd have been better without the sections at the beginning and end where Hank is driving and repeatedly turning to face the camera. It's not a good message for a cycling channel to be sending.
For amateurs I'm sorry this can be dangerous. As a seasoned amateur, I say just go Z2 steady on the flat and rolling and save the "racing" for the hills.
Would you love to ride with Donny ChainGang? 😍
if you love pain 😅
No
I would struggle but I spent a lot of time in Donny Rossington and Tickhill ,nice wee Village .
Absolutely NOT 🤣
No thanks 😮

@2:05 Nice to see a SPD cleat within Donny Chain Gang! :D

You were lucky..

A very refreshing and inspiring video. Thanks Carl

Enjoyed the video, similar concept to the ‘Frankston Express’ out of Melbourne Australia. Been going for at least 30 plus years now.
Maybe we should send someone along!

The Hell ride?
@@9psiSame ride I reckon. It was the Express when I started in the early 90s. Became known as the Hell Ride some time after that.

Gone from Ollie being dropped to dropping Ollie’s name
😂
Tom Pidcock was made on the Leeds Chaingang
3:12 Every man for himself. No waiting for stragglers. We don't stop for flats. So, same as every "no-drop" ride at least they admit it.
It’s fun to see people doing this, but there’s utterly no way I could ever do it. I avoid group rides to begin with. And I don’t have the kind of bike that would allow me to keep up (even if I had the legs and lungs for it).
Soooooo........ What was your average speed for the ride? We all wana know. 😊
Lord of the manor ❤
This is great. One of the best GCN vids
Such a cool film
The hardest group rides I ever did were in Canberra. Bakery Bunch, Hour of Power, Hour of Terror... Not sure how they compete with this one, but they were definitely tough.
Thanks JLW , Russ , and crew . Be well , eh ?
Its what a good group ride is all around the world
"Fit and fat, look at that" as he pats 0% body fat :/
That looks a fun group for a regular smash around 🙂👍🏻

Exactly, they're not bloody pros!
Agreed. Think it’s easy? Pop along and show them!
@@Bluesman2509did ya watch T video? Plenty of pros in the Donny Chaingang.
Hahahaha.true. find one or 2 cool guys and ride with them...even better...ride alone.
It's just bants, mate. It's not that serious.
Great to watch. But must say I don't get the no gloves attitude, when it's cold and when the ride is like a race so there's a higher risk of a crash.
You know people love riding their bikes when they turn out in weather like that
“
IN THE GYM ON THAT BIKE DAILY … CARDIO IS KEY💯💯💯💯💯
lord of manor back to stage
hanks saddle angle is WILD what the HEEELLLLLL
Didn’t spot it, was it upwards??
@@jascollinscork 10:00. Slightly upwards
was he on a e-bike??
I'd love to do this 😂
@Hank! I thought you quit GCN and start renovating your chateau? I think your partner might be looking for you and want you to pick up some lumber! 😅
HOW MANY ACCIDENTS OVER THE YEARS !!!!????
Was Oliver ill? Donny is his home territory.
What’s the difference and average speed?
That Cycling Spirit 🤙🤙Keeps You Young at Heart. Well Done Everyone 👍👍
Would not term these things as club rides runs , Also called the Bash in some areas. They are smash fests on and off . A newbie would soon be ejected out of the rear of it.
Nice car! Audi RS4
No gloves is wild.. Fingers would've froze.. Always gives even in summer 😅
So, no level two, then....

🥱
😂 trouble at mill
never heard of it
😮... that'll be because you're a flapping shorts rider 😂
What bike is he riding. I don't see any markings.
A lorry driver's nightmare
Don't worry, they'll overtake the lorry quickly
Why does it always rain in the UK?
So is this the hardest or that other one in Australia Sasi swap off I think it is
Leeds CG is the hardest
Hi gcn
Hi!
Is this the last video with Hank?
no, he said he will continue with GCN for now, I guess it depends on how his channel does and how much time he has to invest
@@bergerniklas6647 He's not staying at GCN. Would you? Of course you wouldn't.
How many of you do didn't pay attention to Hank's video intro to his manor?
Any crashes?
Russ's Gyno raises a few eyebrows 🤔
Oh, James, why put yourself through such pain every video. May your Christmas video be "single malt testing for evening recovery resting"... Maybe include some cheeses ;-)
Or some quality chocolates.
Is that a E-Bike Hank is riding or is it a bag on the downtube? =0
It’s not the North of the U.K, it’s the midlands.
Good video, but it'd have been better without the sections at the beginning and end where Hank is driving and repeatedly turning to face the camera. It's not a good message for a cycling channel to be sending.
So unnecessary to have pieces to camera while driving on any GCN video. He could have said everything stood somewhere with his bike
Bet the people driving around love this group ride 🤣🤣 i would feel bad having that many cars behind me , looked mega fun though 👌
If i lived in that climate I would not ride my bike
You think so because you haven’t been on group ride in Slovenia 🇸🇮🤌🤌
second
This New Yorker had to listen harder to the rider in blue. Perhaps CC needs to have a translation after his words.
Use the subtitle feature of youtube. 😊
You're learning Yorkshire
It's not a race LOL
This is what you should do, not the inane drivel that makes up about 95% of your content nowadays.
Is that the man from Amy cycling adventures?
No
For amateurs I'm sorry this can be dangerous. As a seasoned amateur, I say just go Z2 steady on the flat and rolling and save the "racing" for the hills.
Great way to stay a “seasoned amateur” 🤡
First - and i do love these challenge videos.
Glad you like them!
That was not a club group ride. It was a Willy waving contest
Some more gender inclusive language might be good! ‘He who dares, wins’ ‘Every man for himself’ 🤔
Right Hank Sorry to break it to you guys this ain’t the fastest chaingang got to come to London for that
Which ride should he go on? Crystal Palace had a tough chaingang
Flat like your beer
😂 yeah ok
Sorry to say but my local chain gang is faster
One of those riders seems to be suffering from gynenomastia. I’m talking about the guy in blue with a beard.😮😮😮
Typical lord of the estate thinks the north of the UK is Doncaster....only 820km south of the north of the UK, give or take!
This does not look hard…
👀
🤣
Is that what your wife told you last night?
