    Dendrobiums are easy!!! I adopted a pot of them off the sidewalk one time. There were about 5 established stems with a couple babies coming up. It looked very much like a bonsai forest. Easy to care for and easy to bloom.

    I just purchased a dendrobium at home depot yesterday, it is in bloom on one stalk. It is planted in a coconut shell. I think I need to repot it, as I want to see the roots, there is a little yellowing on some of the leaves. Please how do I do this? Should I wait a while, or what? I would like to pot it up, and still have the coconut shell as I like the look, and it reminds me of home.
    Thank you,
    Karen

    • @LarrysTropicals
      @LarrysTropicals  9 років тому

      Karen Dennis If it is yellowing, chances are there is root rot. I never recommend getting orchids form big box stores simply because they do not know how to adequately care for their plants. I would recommend repotting it in a bark growing medium.

    My orchids are on their way.
    I already have two Cattaleyas, one very ill Phal, and one very healthy Oncidium.
    Those that I have just ordered are: Aerides Lawrenceae, Ascocentrum Ampullaceum, Dendrobium Densiflorum, Bulbophyllum Careyanum, Rhynchostylis Retusa, and a Vanda Cristata.
    They will arrive without pots or media, so I need to know how to pot each of them and care for them. I have an orchid potting mix ready for them. What else do I need to do? Please help out.

      Hello! Do not cut, some dendrobium grow their flowers on the old canes, plus, you can separate the plant and keep a bunch of old canes with roots that will make a new healthy one if proper taken care of

      Susan's prairie orchids not NO water, but reduced water. The psudobulb will give the plant water, but it needs to be stressed in order to flower.

  • @NotStellarNoja

    Larry, I think I need help! You make it sound fool proof, well...
    The Saga: I was given two dendrobium babies, each about 3 inches tall with 2 fragile leaves a piece. Each of them grew and fell off of a big dendrobium mama plant. The owner of the mama plant was spritzing the babies with water every so often, and they started to grow some white roots. Then, he gave them to me, and we drove 14 hours in a car back to Colorado. Ok, I drove, but they came along on the dashboard, and seemed unphased by the relocation. SO... I went to the plant store, got a clay pot about 3 and a half inches wide, filled it with a bark blend that is well drained, and made the two little cakes a home. And for a while, they were happy.
    The Dilemma: One of them has had an increasingly unhappy leaf. Since it only has 2 leaves, you understand my concern. I moved it from the south window, to the east window. I've been trying to keep it moist during this growth period. I've told it sweet promises and bedtime stories, but the leaf just kept looking more dry. The dryness started at the tip and worked its way in, like cancer. Today, the leaf fell off! :-(
    BUT WAIT! There's a little sprout (maybe leaf, maybe mark of impending doom) coming up where the old leaf fell. Is that a baby leaf? Will my finicky cake survive!? What can I do to help it heal? The finicky cake's other leaf has the same brown mark starting to happen on the very tip. What is my plant trying to tell me? When you see a little brown mark at the tip of your dendrobium leaf, what can you do to make it go away, and make your baby cakes happy again?
    I'm new to this. The guy/angel at the plant store that helped me pot the babies was so informative and nice that he made little signs with their name on it so I could remember "Dendrobium," if that gives you an idea where I started (talk about new to orchids). That was two weeks ago. I thought they would grow big an strong because I love them sooooo much.
    What else do they need besides their new pot-home and all my lovin?

    • @LarrysTropicals
      @LarrysTropicals  9 років тому +1

      00brush Keep it more moist than you have been, and move it into good sunlight. They are very temperamental at this stage, and you can easily bring it back to life by keeping the growing medium moist.
