I am repotting 2 dendrobiums today. I just LOVE you and your videos. I love the way you clip right along, not dragging out the subject matter. I love the fact that you never say "UH, UM, Y'KNOW, etc) I love that your video is always centered on your subject with just your hand to direct attention, accent information. I love that you don't waste time with a bunch of extraneous minutiae. I JUST LOVE YOUR VIDEOS. I've watched all the 'orchid aficionados' and while they have some good info, they are just too drawn out with useless filler words. You are the BEST of all!
Ijust got my first Dendrobium Phalaenopsis the Thiland Black or Velvet Melody. Love the blooms and have c;aught the orchid bug. Really can't get tired of having too many. Although i have a small space so I am careful in getting any more. Love your videos and am learning a lot. Thank you.
Hi Danny. I just almost killed moms phal. Gave it to her for Mother’s Day and repotted in fresh moss before I gifted and... all the roots soured and did what I call “a leca”, when I change from moss to semi hydro and the phal losses all its roots. But this time was from spag moss to fresh spag moss. What’s even worst is the leaves are very fragile, almost as the leaves of iceberg lettuce. It’s thick but breaks very very easily. Hence ... “almost killed” where I snapped off one of the fresh predominant leaf, and three had already came off turning yellow and drying. Anyways what to do. On a happy note I found a new phal the next day and replaced it. Of course mom will see it, but something better than nothing. Yeah I’m only of those with two left thumbs sometimes. Next step in this rescue is converting it into semi hydro with the wicking. I’ll bring the wick to surface of the leca so the roots and plant won’t dehydrate any further from loss of roots. Thought I’d shared this. Oh I’m also trying a new thing. I used to cut off all the dead roots. Now when the velamen (?) softens I just pull out the watery or soft pieces leaving the hard inside root. I noticed with phals have a hard inside root. I refrain from cutting it all off, though I do trim if too long but leave enough to reach bottom of pot. Anyways I’m trying ... emergency measures.
Hahahaha. I love the frustration with the cane that knocks everything over!!! I have unruly children also, and share in the comic relief of the educational value. Btw your videos are the very best! Thank you
After seeing your self watering videos, I am going to do a experiment on phal. Got 3 in discount, one will be repot in bark, one in semi hydro, and the last one will be in self watering system. I have bad lucks with phal. They either die or grow extremely slow for me. I am going to find out what works best for phal in my environment.
Hi Dani, this is how I do mine without the string, since sh never worked for me. My orchids love it. I just dump out the water every other week, kinda like flushing it out and what little debris they have.
Ive just reported my dendrobiums but in the uk I can only get orchid bark and it wasn't holding on to any water so the plant started to fade. After lots of research I used a mix of bark and bonsai tree compost. Not sure if this will be good in the long run but they look a lot better, I hope ive not doomed my plants x
Hey Danni :) So funny, I have the same exact problem with a den phal and this annoying cane! So now I think I will do the same ;) Also, I repotted my first orchid into this method and using the clay pellets (for the first time!) I'm kind of excited to see how it goes. Thanks.
Dear Danny, I got recently a C.leopoldii cerulean and since these plants do not like to be reported , I am putting her into LECA. Wish me luck and please let me know in case you have any tip for me (I will use the self watering system in this video as well ! New stuff , so exciting :)
Enjoyed your video! Just purchased a Den/Phal orchid, my first! It came in a we’ll aerated pot and is in bloom. Plan to repot when blossoms die. It is currently in spagnum moss and bark?? What did you use for medium? Also, one small cane and leaves have dried up - not enough water or too warm? On my north facing patio, plenty of light but no direct sun. Temps are reaching 89 or so here in Fla. I love it and want to give it a happy life! Appreciate your help! Liz
late finding your channel but I love it! I got a kick out of you calling this dendrobium tall when i'm trying to repot dendrobiums with 2 foot tall canes! lol
At the beginning of the year, we inherited my father-in-laws dendrobium, and I have been trying to care for it. It flowered and grew some healthy shoots last month, but I feel like it needs to be repotted. Does it matter when I repot?
Not if you cut from up there. Also denphals are not big on producing keikis, but you could try it if you really wanted to do something with the cane. Just place it on a bed of damp moss.
In Australia, well, you don't realy need to repot them in to very large pots, pretty much all the roots are covering or hangin the pot on the outside, this for dendrobiums only thou ,maybe a few other species. Its just so humid here.
I have a orchid plant that I bought at a Kroger and it is planted in a mossy medium the roots are wound around it, they are bright green, should I replant it in bark after the blooms fall off?.
Very informative, thank you. I have a miniture Dendrobium, I think, not sure really but its has the structure alright, which bears its flowers on the sides of the stem. Since I repotted it, its not doing very well, it produced one or 2 flowers. What tips can u give me to make it bloom again. Would appreciate some help here.🇨🇭💐🥳
This comment is really late but did You throw away the pseudobulb? at least on dendrobiums i always get really lucky with getting keikis from the pseudobulbs if i put them on media
Hey Danny, I have a quick question, as I am new to Dendrobium phals (and loving them so far): Can the cut cane be used as a cutting, and if so, how should I do it? One of the dendrobium phals that I recently ordered online (a purple-blue one, coincidentally) came with a broken cane, and I'm wondering how I can save that cane.
Hi Danni, love your show very informative.. how long before you would have to change the micro fibre wick .... do they become mouldy weeks or moths later or is it good forever,, thank you
Where are you? I really like your channel. Your beautiful voice and explicit explain of the skills of growing orchids really attract me By the way can I buy a pot of dendrobium nobile from you? I live in Sacramento ca.
Hi. My orchid has new canes growing on sides of old canes with roots just hanging in the air. The whole plant is absolutely massive. How should I tackle it?
My blue happiness is growing a new flower spike (11 buds), but 3 of the buds blasted. They are not the small ones on the tip but the biggest ones. What can cause it? The orchis is in the same spot as usually.
Hi I'm new to orchids I went to our green thumb this year and I bought $150 worth of orchids I bought 2 of this kind and wanted to know what is best medium for them I can't seem to find anyone that talks about this I see u use clay balls it came in what looks like coco core block it has mold growing on the top I was worried it might harm the orchid any ideas or other videos uve made that might help thanks I really like ur video
Where do you get your decorative flower pots? I've only found a few, but the few all have drainage holes. Watering my orchids takes some time as I have only one container that they can be "watered" in. HELP?
In my experience with sympodial orchids, I leave old cane/pseudobulbs on as long as they still have structural integrity and seem to be valuable to the plant. I would never remove a growth still bearing leaves over a matter of inconvenience- that feels like poor plant stewardship to me. Cutting a living growth like the cane in this video opens a plant up to risk of infection and removes a key source of energy. It pained me to see how green and juicy that cane was when it was cut- a sure sign it was still bringing value to the plant.
Hi, well there are many reasons. Cutting the dead roots and changing the broken down medium (in case of organic medium), or change the size of the pot, reshaping the orchid, etc.
@@MissOrchidGirl ooo ok I'm a new orchid owner and I'm struggling to keep it alive. I was told to water it once a week but the trunk looks like it's dehydrated. I'm just learning that its a Dendrobium
Well think about how much water you have in a sh pot, it's just the spaces in between the leca. Having a designated space with no leca means 10 times a bigger reservoir ;) it's exactly the self watering concept they use with any soil intended pots.
I just bought a beautifull blue vase. Not transparant, but like milky glass that looks somewhat cracked (don't know the exact name in English). It's good for the orchid because the roots need light. The vase is 50%higher than the brown pot where the orchid is in. So, orchid in a brown pot with watering holes, and then in a vase that is almost double in height. Looks beautifull and also a lot cheaper than a pot. Hope this helps👍
Help.. newbie that’s rescued so phals with good luck & picked up dendrob that looked to wet and moss growing… removed, trimmed dead roots then put in hanging clay pot in bark.. Should I have used clear plastic pot or???

I use wax for cut roots. I warm up those little "tea light" candles on a pan and double-dip the roots in it 😊
Superbe vidéo, j'aime vôtre manière de réservataire d'eau. Félicitations !
I replaced leca with vulcanic rock. Looks better and orchid loves it

I have dendrobiums and I haven't repotted it yet. My concern is it has a lot of mealy bugs. And what medium should I use to repot it.

Hey, is it a good idea to remove the white dry layer on the stem? I'm not sure if it's normal or does it need to be removed.
Thanks for your tutorials. I learn si much with you. May I know what happened to the cut cane?

What is the medium you use please and is it ok for all orchids. Thank you.
Do you always water orchids after replanting?
So i can cut old canes when they turn a lot and i cant affect them?
Are those hydro balls. I thought in your other video you said they like bark?
how did you save it?

Sorry but can dendrobium phalaenopsis survive at 4 Celsius degrees?

hey girl , can can use pomice as potting media ?
Please let me know what kind of medium you are using for this orchid! I neeeeeed it thank you

just wanted to know if you can grow a dendrobium in moss?

Could the cane you cut be used to produce keikis? Like when a Phaius orchid spent flower spike.
What is this ball like substance?? Could u plzz tell me the name ? I am beginner.
Hi, it's called LECA ☺️
