    We're in the UK and our Dendrobium sits on top of a refrigerator near the back. It has stayed green through the winter because of the warmth it receives from the fridge motor. It hasn't flowered but has started to grow new offshoots. Enjoying learning about this fantastic family of plant. Thank you for your insightful videos!

I did not know how to remove them until I watched your video. Now it wants to spike out. It will produce a deep purple color. No fragrance just a nice show. Again thanks for the info Nicole. 😊

    Hi Nicole, very interesting about the dendrobium and its keikis and how you removed them from the mother plant. Do you have any idea when they will be old enough to flower ? Can you provoke a mother plant to produce them, was it because of the cold days spent on the fire escape ? Didn’t you say that you would grow them in water ? Thanks for sharing with us.

    • @NicoleDeanna
      @NicoleDeanna  3 роки тому

      Hey Andre! They probably won't be old enough to flower for maybe 2 years. I gave some of the keikis away to my mom. She's growing them in moss right now. I have two keikis here and I have them in full water culture in a tall shot glass. I'll show them on my next monthly update. They are doing well.
      In terms of triggering the Orchid to produce keikis, they nobiles tend to produce keikis when the don't get a cool winter rest and you keep the temperatures warm throughout the year. They also get keikis when they are getting fertilizer during the rest period. Lastly they may produce keikis if they are stressed out. It's their way of reproducing in case they don't make it. Thanks for watching 🤗

      Thanks for watching! Not many places I'm aware of in the city. The flower district has a few places with them, but they mostly have phals, and sometimes oncidiums. I've heard of a vendor selling orchids in the union square farmers market on the weekend. I generally order online since there's not much variety here. Sunset Valley orchids, Carmela orchids and Hausermann orchids are some of my favorite vendors. Happy growing!

    Thanks for shearing this information, very clear! But; when is the time to put them in a bark mix? Do the need a intermediate mix? Say: half bark mix half sphagnum? Thank you.

    • @NicoleDeanna
      @NicoleDeanna  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks for watching! Both work for this orchid. I think it depends on your availability to water. If you have it in bark, during the growth season I'd water more often, as it approaches dryness. If you have it in moss it'll retain more water and you won't have to water as much. As for the keikis, I like moss to keep them moist longer, but as the roots develop, in 6 months or so you can pot it into your mix of choice.

      Old canes will dry out and die. Provided you are giving the orchid good moisture during the growing season it's ok. Just make sure to water in the growing season as the orchid dries and all should be ok. If you let it go too long without water though it can cause issues. I'd still water regularly till you see it stop growing then let it be for the rest.

    Hey! I recently (about 6 months ago, early summer) did the same you did with two keikis, that maybe were a tiny smaller, but had healthy roots and 3 leaves each. I have them in a tiny concrete container (it doesnt have holes but it's porous) planted in sphagnum and a few bits of of bark/charcoal. We've just entered autumn and now both of them have lost a leave. Normally i'd not worry about my mother plant dropping leaves and keeping only the chunky steams because it has a lot of other steams and leaves, but these babies are tiny and had only 3 leaves total, and now are with 2 each. Am I in danger of losing them? :v The roots seem fine, still with green bits but skinniner than before, and I dont see any rot, but they also have not developed further since split from the mother.
    The mother plant is outdoors in a trellis, the babies are indoors next to a window on the tiny pots.

    • @NicoleDeanna
      @NicoleDeanna  2 роки тому +3

      Leaf loss is common for this one! I wouldn't give the keikis a dry rest, but continue giving them water, they should sprout new growths in the spring.
