Sure wish I found you guys 3 years ago. I have given up on vandas. I have a few left I am trying to grow, but due to a airboat accident years ago I now have to give up my larger plants. Atleast, I can care for the them the right way before I give them away. Thank you for the right information 😁😁👍👍

Damn! You dispelled some MAJOR things I was sure was true! LOL
I had always put that moss (called Pele's hair in Hawaii) to retain moisture on my vanda roots, since I live in the driest & windy-est area (Waikoloa) in Hawaii and do not have a greenhouse, just a home made shade cloth area with irrigation mist. Now I have to think about removing it...
Also had problems growing Vandas indoors, so considered growing them in a vase...WRONG..
I have many different orchids so the ideal conditions of one orchid is root rot to another. Gives me hope seeing you grow other types of orchids with your vandas.
Also Ty for helping me learn about all the BS out there on the Internet...
Love the photos of your healthy, gorgeous vandas...

It would be great if you could address how to grow vanda indoors, and in a Northern Climate. You don't advocate growing in vases, so I'm assuming you don't advocate growing potted either. Nor do you believe in dunking a bare root vanda in a bucket. So, should people in northern climates not bother owning vanda orchids at all?

Hate people who can’t acknowledge that there may be a different way, but he is very knowledgeable. I have a lovely vanda that I had to put in a pot bc I live in Oregon and the vanda was NOT happy when I tried to grow it bare root. So I put it in a large Lechuza hanging pot and it is much happier. New growth, roots etc. She hasn’t bloomed yet but it has been very dark here. SHE IS NOT DEAD. Those Vandas are nuts and so amazingly huge and healthy that is definitely the best way to grow them, but mine if fine, not as gorgeous as his, but at least I get to enjoy them!

Question: I live in Virginia and bought my Vanda from a grower in Charlottesville. He gave me a beautiful healthy vanda with all its leaves and strong roots. I bought the candy for my mother who love orchids and I wanted the watering to be easier for her. I sadly saw the wrong video which told me to put the vanda in a bucket and let it soak up the water. Now my vanda is a green yellow and it’s roots are now broken.
Is there any way to save my vanda if I give it filtered light and water it with the roots tangling only in the morning not at night? Will it begin to show a green and become healthy and grow new roots ????

What to do if the basket was already removed? I think not soaking the roots is a waste of water, not environmentally friendly at all. I personally soak and reuse the bucket of water. If the vanda is too big for an ordinary bucket, I will still put a bucket under it to save the water.

    • @orchidlife8224
      @orchidlife8224  2 роки тому +5

always best to feed and water first thing in the morning if you can, maybe an hour before sunrise to give some time to soak.... for epsom you want to use 1 tablespoon per gallon once a month for regular maintenance in the fall and winter/early spring.

Now it's "After the fact" what do you suggest I do with Vandas that have been moved to wooden Vanda Baskets ? As a beginner I liked the look & now I'm wondering if I may have harmed them.. I did _Not like the look of all the dangly roots... so I soaked the new arrivals in water (until roots were flexible) & "Wound" them around inside the baskets. )I left the plastic baskets to be able to wire down/attach securely. This was 2 years ago. Some have grown through the baskets & look ok. Others are not as fast growing roots, but foliage is good.

The watering part is the hardest thing especially if you are saying that dunking your vandas is a no no. This seems to be the easiest way to water them indoors. Dunk it in a full bathtub full of water, soak for 10-15 mins and then let it dry before hanging back up. Any help is appreciated! 🙂

I live in Ohio. I put my Vandas and mini Vandas and Neos' in lava rock in clay pots.
They were kinda small when I bought them.
I tied them to short wire stakes ( like Rick L. if you know who that is.) I soak the plant 2x a week in Jakes AB and epsom salts. Plants go outside in May and inside in Oct and pretty much get full sun. Inside they get window light and t5 grow lights on a timer to match the winter dark. The room stays a steady 70F 50% humidity. And I dont change water and feeding. All my orchids are in lava rock and clay pots and I mix the Jacks to 50% per directions,...tap water,...5.8 ph,....1.3 ec. Plants soak up to 24 hrs.
Every plant had to adjust to this and were gradually brought to that level of feed and light. Some died and some didnt really respond at all. But after 2 years,..the 60 orchids that made it are doing better than most of what Im seeing from most of the channels today. Start with a younger plant. Let it get used to what you can offer it. Dont kill it with kindness and fuss over it all the time. Give it a little neglect. Just my opinion,...but an orchid may need to adjust 1-2 growing seasons before it takes off. Overwatering is never good. Hope that helps . Bindge watch Rick L. orchid channel and let me know if you would like any advice or tips from my success.

With all due respect your flowers are gorgeous but I am not impressed with all the nasty chemicals suggested in order to keep the flowers thriving .and beautiful .
Just like the monoculture farmers ,golf courses and all the residential people using loads of weed killer in their yards you too are supporting an industry that is taking our world down a very dismal path of self destruction ..... someday not having clean drinking water ,not to mention the killing of all life forms .
I would think at an average of $70.00 a pop you boys can do much better going more organically and still make a profit ?
You really should consider taking on the challenge being leaders /champions in your industry and make a difference in the world vs adding to the already over load in toxins being spewed out daily .
Your flowers look great but at what cost ?
When your flowers look as good as they do now ...without all the nasty cancer causing chemicals then I will be impressed .
Until then I will buy from the organic grower and feel good about my purchase .

But this guy's comments circa 6:40 is much, too much - a step too far.
    :::$MH:::
You're going to go on, and on, and on about the dynamic of having an 'AIR-PLANT', then insist you must keep it in its "little plastic nursery-basket..."
    😂😂😂😂
    ¡Bro STFU!
I hate when people go on, and on with ABSOLUTES.
When everyone with a brain understands that you do not actually have a 10% chance of your plant surviving the removal of a constrictive, little plastic bucket...🤦🏻‍♂️
    (More like 99%..👀)
    .
He's the only orchid enthusiast on the planet that noticed this little detail..😂
    Who knew..😅

      Ya know what.
I'm not gonna be mean spirited, I love orchids.
      PS
I'm not going to go back and forth with ya.
But someone with such a bombastic personality style should understand there will be pushback when stating an argument such as:
      "DIAPER OR DEATH..!!!"
      .
      It's dumb advice.
      .
... And yes, i understand these plants have been cultivated for centuries...
But that drives my point even deeper.
If we are heading towards cultivars which need a plastic diaper to succeed; we went wrong somewhere.
It's equivalent to stating that a full grown tree needs an iron-rod for a back bone or yards of tarp for proper shade... IT'S A TREE.
      Just like, it's an epiphytic-plant..👀
The goal would not be to end up with a plant that needs an added piece of plastic.
