Correct
I agree tho
Wtf is ONLY having USB C and a Aux
And having to use dongles.
Although currently I've got a iMac 21.5inch 2019
I upgraded from the MacBook Pro 15inch 2016
Wishing weezy No.
@@brennont9724 I just report it
@@kalfruit let me summarize the port list:
iPods: Lightning and AUX
iPhones: Lightning
iPad: some are lightning, others are USB-C
Macbooks: USB-C/Thunderbolt and AUX
So Apple, we need: Lightning Headphones, AUX Headphones, USB-A to Lightning, USB-C to Lightning, USB-A to USB-C and USB-C to USB-C. Really??
The "one man's trash is a another man's treasure " fits you well
For only $370 I'd say that that's the best deal for what you got from it. It's incredible on how much stuff this dude got for only that much money
Idk I feel like 370 is way too much
$370 is too much for those pile of junks.
coz at the very least nobody will buy an old 2nd hand model of any apple product. (base from their target customer of apple products)
not to mention finding parts are too damn hard to find and expensive (unless you are living in shenzhen china)
even Louis Rossmann will throw these junks to the landfill. lol
James Chua yeah definitely not
@@ChibiKeruchan You are mistaken. These Macbooks and iPads have a huge market on the likes of eBay and other second-hand sites. There are early 2013 Macbook Pros (13") being sold for £450 ($565)+ on eBay. This deal was an absolute steal for what Hugh received.
I have a 2008 MacBook with a battery that won't hold a charge (it must stay plugged in to work) and still bet you I can find someone who'll take it for $100 just that one alone.
6:54 that MacBook has been intentionally damaged, there's no way someone can accidentally destroy a laptop like this
I blame techrax
Airsoft
even the one shown before it seemed like it was intentionally damaged
I blame howtobasic
it looks like it has been shot and stabbed
That 17' 2009 MBP most likely has a dead capacitor that powers the MCP.
It's very common on that model and is easily fixed by replacing the capacitor :)
Hey Hugh, FYI, the 2011 GPU faults are inside the chip. It’s a flip chip design where the die is connected with metal bumps rather than bond wires. The failure is on one or more of the bumps. I don’t have a video on this but I do have one on what is happening when people try to reheat their BGA chips.

The "Pismo" black laptop had all sorts of *other* things that could be shoved in the "Accessory Bay" too. From the black 'just plastic bin' one I used to hold dongles and cables *internally* to a *internal* AC powerbrick, to ZIP drives, etc. Honestly an excellent design concept even today IMNSHO. Double batteries are excellent. Or run *no* batteries light. I have one running a developer release of MAX OS X here somewhere and some of the odd 'fits in a bay' stuff if there's particular interest.
all of them, I want to see all of them restored.
Appreciate all the time and patience, not to mention professionalism, you put into this and all your videos, Hugh. "Keep it repaired" and "Keep it out of landfill" should be T-Shirt slogans by now, if they aren't already. Keep up the great work!

Something we can’t say anymore :(.
Yes
apple has more recently added more slots! you still need a dongle for most stuff tho :(
Can’t wait to see the repairs
Hugh, that 2009 MBP might be a good place to start with buying a second hand board, and a bottom case replacement if the screen is still good. It is the matte version and they are becoming increasingly more rare as they were only made for a short period of time.

Ah I love the 17 inch MacBook Pro, especially with the matte display! You should definitely disable the GPU and use the integrated one :D
There is a board-level fix that can permanently disable the GPU and make these old monsters stable again.
@@W1ldTangent if you disable the gpu via commands its still stable.
the 2011's were down to Apple using sub par none Led based solder, I had one of these and had constant logic board replacements.
No. That, and a design flaw from AMD itself.
@@Wishingweezy penis
@@aegonthedragon7303 ...exactly. Easiest proof is the high failure rate of non-soldered AMD 5xxx and 6xxx GPUs from that same time (found e.g. in the 2011 iMac).

FYI, I have ipad 2 3g, and it is locked on activation device. Then i remove the resistor R1205 (near the a5 cpu). Turn the ipad 2 on, and it will automatic enter the dfu mode. Then connect to pc and restore the firmware with 3utools. After that the activation screen/apple id/icloud id is empty and i can use the ipad as usual. But the 3g no longer working
There are A5 activation lock bypasses that don’t require removing anything already

12.44am in the uk and i was going to bed. Not any more, the G3 laptop is a beaut and was my first mac. Please bring that back to life first. Currently awaiting on a donor board for my 17 inch 2010 MacBook pro. I think the SMC has gone in keeping with every other laptop of that type and size. Keep up the great work.
This sound in the big MacBook can be solved by resetting the sound driver or updating
This also happened to my laptop
I cant wait to see all of them being restored, however, I got to say what I am looking forward the most is to know how you will handle all of that apple account locked iPad, I am curious what parts can you salvage for other devices, or if in the other way around what parts would you have to transfer from an "unlocked" device into any of those to be able to use it?
Apple: sells "Pro" laptop with 128GB of storage and no ports
Hugh: accumulates 120 gigs of raw footage and shames Apple on the lack of ports
Apple: that wasn't very InNOvatIOn of you

Just to clear things up, the GPU is not problematic on the 2009 and 2010 MBPs. The issue is actually a capacitor that goes bad and needs to be replaced (C7771 for 2008-2009 unibodies, C9560 for 2010 unibodies.)

Europe also uses inches for screen size.
The UK still uses inches for PC screens.
I had an Airport express, and I used it to play stuff over Airplay to my HiFi system. Worked perfectly.
Watching this video in my 4 years old phone with broke screen 😂😂😂
Hahahah.. my 8 years old phone with broken screen and battery issues
Internet recovery for older OS will usually work if you back date. Strange as it sounds, Apple puts an expiration date on Mac OS Internet Recovery downloads. Because, well...Apple. After the first part of the process (download), but prior to letting it restart, you disconnect it from any Internet access, manually boot into recovery, open terminal, set the date back far enough to override the expiration date of the OS you are trying to install, and then let it reboot and perform the actual install (still without allowing any Internet access).
13:51 Apple employee got promoted for "inspiring Apple to force people to buy Mac's every year"
Watching Hugh’s videos are always satisfying
Its shocking how anyone could intentionally mistreat their expensive hardware like that.
Hugh I just got a 2013 MBP with about 2,600 charge cycles and still 86% life. My old 2012 MBP barely lasted me 1,700 cycles before suffering a 47% battery life
Sounds like ‘John’ served you some proper castoffs from his pile and got some money back.
Man, as long as you upload a video on restoration it's cool. especially the older device.

09 MacBook Pros don’t typically have video issues. Likely it’s just a faulty hard drive. You would want to yank that for an ssd anyway. 2020 and I’m still rocking a 17” mbp. Love that machine.

that powerbook G4 looks so nice actually, it meets the modern designs imo
Your very good to follow, like how you repair the devices, so somehow they are possible to repair. Thanks and kind regards.
Activation locks can be easily bypassed, depending on iOS ver, most current cannot be bypassed but once a hole is found, it can be bypassed.
I’m looking forward to seeing what Hugh can do with the MacBook that was obviously used for target practice
Been following you a lot mate. Would feel really good if I could get my hands on one of them. It'll really help with my studies. Nonetheless appreciate your effort of reusing and reducing the never-ending e-waste. Kudos!
Amazing video as usual! I would love to see the PowerBook G3 being restored in the future!
4:12 "So as any IT professional would do... I turned it off and on again." LMAOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Or do the easy way: Unplug the battery or the charger if its running off it.
There is software that allows you to backup a working iPad and transfer that backup to a locked iPad via USB. I forget the name but it will take an ITunes backup and put it on locked iPad and boom working iPad. I had to use this when I was doing IT support for several schools.
the 17 inch MacBook pro has a power regulator chip that is not rated for the power necessary to power the GPU, and what can happen is a complete GPU crash or fault. Heating the chip with a heat gun or replacing it with a proper chip will fix the problem.
I've been watching your videos recently and you are just Brilliant! Well done!
I suspect the old MacBook with the speaker problem could be it’s had some liquid damage or falling apart. Best case is it’s the drivers and a factory reset is only needed.
Interesting story with the one that was hard to turn on and then boot looped, I was on a trip and my phone restarted, WiFi cellular and Bluetooth were all disabled, after restarting again it showed the swipe up to restore screen, it locked up after that and turned off, I could only turn it on when the charger was unplugged, then had to plug it in when it was on the apple logo. When I got it on the system logs would crash when you opened them. I restored the phone to factory and it was fine for a hour, then it repeated it all, when I got home I fully wiped it and put it into dfu mode and haven’t had problems since, this was on a iPhone XS. This whole thing happened over a few hours trying to get to to work
The 17 inch MacBook Pro gpu failed because the solder bumps that connected the die to the substrate would fail. Only 2011s had that issue, even the 2011 iMacs had gpu failure because it was the same chip.
You gotta make an update on if your MBP's audio amplifier gets fixed from the donor! Great vid as always
9:30 That’s cool so in retrospect you can install a 512GB SD Card with a CF Adapter in a ZIF Adapter like you do in the iPod Classic videos to this 08 Air! 🤯🤯
The internet recovery issues are caused by a certificate issue where the update servers dont accept the certs from alot of the older laptops, you have to go to the apple store to fix this in most cases. Tried to recover friends macbook and ran into this. Installed linux instead.
Those older Mac Minis are really fun to fix, the hardest part is getting into them 😂 after that it’s pretty good
Great man. You are my best tech UA-camr
This video is worth watching! More of this, please!
Goodness me. How did those laptops have dents and cracks like a car accident? What insane use has the previous owners had on those laptops.
That last mac is not a gpu issue!!!! I ha e a identical machine and it was the battery. It's doing that because it needs the battery to boot all the way and the battery is so dead that its not being detected. The way I fixed it was to plug in the charger with the battery unplugged than plug in the battery. For some reason that will make it start to actually charge.
Another awesome repair from Hugh Jeffrey
For the MacBook Air Apple made a special charger (MagSafe 1 L connector) so you were supposed to use that
I’m happy to see the apple II floppy port mostly because I just picked up an
apple IIe with no power supply. But it does have a color monitor a different floppy drive then you have and a dual floppy drive. Also a 2006 iMac from the same guy.
4:44 If this is the 2012 model of macbook than this model doesn't have a failing gpu, but a poor soldered buck converter, this is a small chip that is the power 'lifeline' of the gpu, apple had an extended repair program for those macbooks, you can tell if the macbook had been "repaired" by apple if you open up the laptop and find a piece of shoe rubber glued on the buck converter.
I would love to see you repair that MacBook Air and possibly get it upgraded to a useable standard, if even possible. Keep up the great work!
Right to Repair, a movement not just about repairing but also imo to reduce e-waste, apple is out there trying their best to increase it. Someday i will sit down and fix the Compaq LTE ELITE 4/75CXL.
