I don't agree with this idea that technical limitations are always a negative thing. One of the main reasons why Jaws is still a classic to this day is that the shark is not shown that much and he first appears halfway through the film. The reason why Spielberg went with this approach is because the mechanical shark (named Bruce) would not work most of the time, he even said if the mechanical shark actually worked as it was supposed to be the film would be completely different (most likely not as good as the film we got). Another example is the fog in Silent Hill which you already mentioned in this video. Just because something starts as a result of technical limitations doesn't mean that it's a bad thing and you should get rid of it the moment you don't need it, you can definitely keep using it as a stylistic choice even when technology advances.

Huge agree. Imagine the CGI-heavy mishandling that would be a Jaws remake.

Video game remakes are nice because of updated story, graphics, and gameplay, allowing it to be accessible for a younger generation. With films, it's trickier; the OG films can be accessible to a younger audience, but the remakes can also fix story issues. The only problem is that a video game has a lot more time to say what is has to say while a movie is much shorter.

As you said in this video, part of the importance of looking back at old art is to reflect on the times of when it was made. When companies push out remakes for newer generations to experience with their unlimited shiny hardware, it's basically a lie being told that these games belong in our timeframe. A generation of gaming in which its most entertaining attributes consist of blind nostalgia and desperate attempts at recapturing the past is by definition these studios just admitting defeat. It means that they are so insecure about their new ideas and how poorly they are received that rather than trying to do better, they sit back and just make another recreation of a game they made years ago because they know the hardest part in making it has already been done. The saddest part is that the audience for such games don't see how temporary this trend is. I bet it was very unexpected when Capcom announced Resident Evil 2 remake, but how long will it take before people stop being surprised when Resident Evil 1 gets a remake of its own remake? Or better question: How long will it take before you start seeing that playing a game you're already familiar with is never going to be as exciting as that first time?

So true. Allowing nostalgia to control and dictate the direction of video games has backed everyone, developers and audiences both, into a very unique corner.

What the market desires balancing with what publishers will risk putting out (much less what they even legally can put out re: licensing) is a complex, nigh indecipherable equation. I’d like a world where great remakes always come out at just the right time and at just the right price, but realistically even voting with your dollar is just a part of the information feeding into these publishers’ decisions. Anyway, despite loving capitalism myself, I enjoyed the video.

Getting remakes are mostly good recently but I am worried about the long term of creativity.
Metroid Prime 1 was already aged well and a remastered version was unnecessary but Nintendo will continue to do that to the rest of the Prime series for marketing purpose on Prime 4. RE5R is highly happening over Code Veronica for reasons because it’s part of the mainline games (Revelations 3 where are you?). JRPGs getting remakes aren’t new over the years as SMRPGR is good enough to buy, which can lead to a sequel in the future. Still waiting for a Xenogears/Saga remakes though.
Depending on how the presentation, a remake can be acceptable if there’s a reason to market for the upcoming newer title such as the Baten Kaitos 1/2 remastered leading to the third entry.

I played RE5 recently and it’s barely out of line with ‘modern’ gaming sensibilities. And as God is my witness, if they cut out the boulder punching quick time event…

Sonic Fans are feeling this sort of thing lately with Sonic Origins. Sure, those ports are fantastic, but at the cost of half of Sonic 3's ost and the availability of cheaper previous ports.
It's honestly kind of upsetting how the classics get treated sometimes.

You just have to respect the classics but don’t just make the same game again example the demon souls remake had most of the same issues of the original try and do what remakes like dead space do and improve what wasn’t perfect or remove it and replace it with a better thing like the second round against the leviathan

I used to think of remakes being, you make the game exactly, if not, almost like the original, instead of getting rid or modifying aspects, especially if it isn't needed. I feel like most remakes nowadays, like you said, are done with the sole intention of trying to inject MTX(Micro transactions) and other questionable ideas into remakes. Then of course of trying to "modernize" it, which wouldn't be a bad thing, if it only stopped at a facelift and maybe better explanations of certain game mechanics.
Dead Space 2023 was a good example of a remaster since it fleshed out details that didn't make since in the OG, and also kept AND doubled down on the horror element of Dead Space, making veterans, as well as new players appreciate the surprises and mechanics the devs implemented into the game.

I often look at remakes with extreme skepticism. I can understand something like Resident Evil 2 Remake. Sure the game has been ported, but it hasn't been messed around with like say Persona 3. I find it a little funny that the game is getting a "remake" from a game which was "definitive edition'ed" by the original game, and this game had a different version for the PSP. Sometimes, you just think "isn't this a little bit too much?" Especially when the "remake" has a 70 dollar price tag lol.

P3R was only the vanilla P5R and ofc I am not buying it until there’s the definitive edition of the remake with all bonus content and maybe a possible FeMC (highly doubt) in 2027
