  • Almost every long-lasting franchise has at least one black sheep in it, right? So let's look at a few of them and talk about what a black sheep actually is! Is it a worse game? A different game? Both? Something else? So many questions, but luckily every question has an answer in life... Almost every question.

    Another way to look at "Black Sheep Games" are with the Studio itself too. Criterion Games, makers of several of my childhood racing games with the Burnout franchise also made Black. A rather solid FPS. This was during a time before the Studio name got dragged through the mud as a support studio for many EA titles like Battlefield and Battlefront with a scattering of Need For Speed.
    Speaking of Battlefield. The same year DICE released Battlefield 1942, the game that changed the studio to go from making racing and pinball games to full time FPS. Also did the Gamecube port of Shrek: Extra Large.

      tbh, DICEs pinballs and Motorhead (their racing game) were based.

      Oh god, not Shrek Extra Large... despite liking Battlefield 1942 and 2 I now have to hate DICE for making that game... (At least Shrek 2 was a fun game).
      And yeah, Black is pretty fun, but now I really just want another Burnout game, maybe one day... I will even take a remaster of Burnout 3...

    When I got a notification that a new video of yours was posted (and what its topic was) I was constantly thinking about what you're going to say and what will count as a "black sheep" in gaming. Now, I finally had the time to watch the actual video.
    Ah... Black Sheep Sven... the game with as many parts as Moorhuhn (it was from the same developer, I think? I remember a karting game with both the chicken and Sven... which was really funny) - they added it to many magazines because the licence was cheap. I also remember java versions of the game? ...but yeah... it was... bizarre. Especially since it was rated for everyone.
    Good pick with Dark Souls 2. I actually enjoyed Majula and the game's structure. But that was all good I can say about DkS2. I think that they tried TOO hard to go for the "memes" of "this is dark souls" and the game sometimes was downright cruel to the player. There was a LOT of weird gameplay tweaks that I'm happy that they backtracked from. Bosses were LOT less FUN too. It was obvious that Miyazaki wasn't involved. ...but hey, I think that it was Dark Souls 2 that made 3 so... great. It was like the end of a dark age and celebrating the series as a whole.
    I was surprised with your pick of XB2. When I think about black sheep of xeno series I would go with... I don't know, Chronicles X? It was... the weirdest and perhaps the weakest (even if I love it to bits);
    Eh, I think you were a bit too harsh for XVi. It was... okay. I think that XIII and XV deserved the spot even more (hell, even X-2, which was endlessly memed on). XVI tried to do... something (and DLCs were admitedly pretty good) and used references to the rest of the series nicely. XIII looked pretty, had Lightning and... that's it. I would say that XIII was the most anti-final fantasy game, even if I KIND of liked it (a lot). The paradigm shift system was kind of dope. XV... was butchered a lot. That would be the game I think would do better as a new IP - just you hangin' out with the bois. That was fun. Combat was fun. ...but the game was... empty and shallow. Yeah, XVI went all in on the "ADULTS ONLY", but... there were still sparks of light in the darkness. XIII meanwhile felt as much final fantasy as Spirits Within.
    Metal Gear Solid, huh? I wouldn't really count MGSurvive as a part of Metal Gear canon (if we did, Snake's revenge would be a lot, LOT worse). ...but you know what's canon and what deserves that spot? Portable Ops. Holy hell it was bad. ...and it's funny how Kojima retconned it but also... didn't? After all Big Boss has his unit at the start of Peace Walker and the San Hieronymo Incident WAS kind of mentioned...? Eh. Make your mind Kojumbo.
    I waited the whole video for Doom 3. Fantastic pick for the topic! Because it was a good game, at times great even! It sold extra well, was talked about in media... but it wasn't a good Doom game. And for me, that's the greatest definition of a black sheep: "it's alright, but it's not at all like the things we love".
    Because... should we call a black sheep a game that thanked the entire franchise (like Left Alive for Front Mission)? Or was made by other developers who haven't got a clue what the game was really about (like Jak: Lost Frontier or Harvest Moon: Light of Hope)?
    My favorite black sheep game is perhaps Wipeout Fusion, because it sold well, gamers liked it, critics loved it, it played quite well... until everyone got to a conclusion that it isn't even half as good as the previous entries. ...and the developers even ran with that and made the season and era the game took place a "dark age of the sport" which ruined nearly all interest in the races itself.
    Again, great video. I thought that it's gonna be really brief and not detailed because of relatively (to your other videos) short lenght but I was pleasantly surprised!
    As for sheep games... Play Sheep for PS1 (or PC)! It's super fun actually.
    PS1 era had a LOT of good action-puzzlers, huh?

      I had to check and there have been four whole Moorhuhn Kart racers in the end, while I personally only played the first two and hey, for free they weren't... TOO bad. If I had to pay for them though? I would have been a bit more mad at them...
      I shall not forgive you for your take on Dark Souls 2, hmpf... I just really like it for trying its own thing and sadly it had a pretty troubled development and many things had to be changed from the actual game we ended up with and it's one of those "What If's?" that make me sad the most. Now thinking about the development also made me remember I wanted to include the whole lightning/graphics downgrade controversy and totally forgot about it while making the video...
      While XBX kinda stands out as the forgotten game (thanks for that, WiiU) and could also be counted as a black sheepy because its more open-world-focused than the other XB games that are more linear I chose XB2 instead because it feels like it's the game that people always talk about in a negative light when it comes to the XB games.
      Despite all the flaws that most of the later FF games had they still felt like FF to me, which was the important point for me in that regard! Now the question could be, what even is FF because even 6 to 7 to 8 and then 9 are pretty different but for me they were always some light-hearted (that could go a bit bleaker at times) stories that have charm to them, even if they're a bit clumsily told. With their very own aesthetic. Now FF16 kinda threw all of that away and it's just some generic medievil world with some FF squeezed into it.
      Never played Portable Ops but I think retcons in such a long-running series is just something that will always happen and luckily I'm not THAT deep into most lore in video games that it would bother me. It does make some writers look a bit hacky though when they rework so much of it though...
      I still wanna check out Left Alive one day just out of morbid curiosity, and luckily I never played a Front Mission game so it can't ruin that universe for me...
      Looked up some gameplay of that Sheep game and I have no idea what was going on, but it looks pretty interesting so I will put it onto my list of games I wanna check out one day! Which is totally not... way too long...

      @@Vanserchan I'm not worthy of your forgivness, I guess.
      If you can get Left Alive cheaply... sure, go for it. It's perhaps the WORST stealth game (yeah, worse than Sneak King) I've ever played.
      As for Front Mission (just to add MORE TO YOUR EVER GROWING BACKLOG)... they are great, and the remakes of 1 and 2 (originals never released in English) are now for PC/Switch/PS4, so you can enjoy them. They are amazing. My "young idealist slowly becomes jaded enough to casually commit warcrimes" game of choice (remake of first game that is).

      @@Hodyna Nooo, you are hereby forgiven now... for now! I never played Sneak King myself but saw a video on it and... I'm in for something special then when it's somehow even worse than that! Also Burger King is probably the worst fast food place ever created so it deserved those games...
      We all have committed some war crimes here and there in our lives so no big deal anyways! I will check them out (sooner than later) even if I really suck at strategy games like that!

    wait snails and slugs are different things? snails are moe. by extension, slugs are even more moe because naked is always (most of the time) better in any (most) context.

    • @Vanserchan
      @Vanserchan  День тому

      Nuh uh, the snail house is the most moe part of a snail, everyone loves a cute snail house! So slugs are by definition a bit less moe since they're missing it! And they're a bit TOO slimy for my taste...

      @@Vanserchan Haha your logic is sound. HOWEVER. It is widely known when a snail loses its house unexpectedly it blushes like "Kyaa!".
      As for taste, well. Mine is quite eclectic.

    I think there's a difference inbetween a black sheep and a game that is just bad
    Maybe I understood the term wrong, but I've always seen black sheep as a synonym for an underrated game in a series
    Like, what black sheep is supposed to mean, the same but not seen as as great because it's different
    I was funny when I started using internet, seeing what people considered as the black sheep of series I like, I was very surprised to see that Mario Sunshine was considered as the black sheep of the 3d Mario games, same for X5 for the Mega Man X games. I guess it's just a sort of group effect, even if I've seen that black sheep effect leading to people hating on games without knowing why, just they've heard that it wasn't as good as the others

    •  11 днів тому

      Also wtf what that sheep game at the beginning?

    • @Vanserchan
      @Vanserchan  11 днів тому

      As kids we just really don't judge things I think, since kids mostly lack critical thinking... So unless a game is super-duper-not-fun a kid would still have fun with it, even if it may not be that great like Sunshine. (Even though I loved Sunshine as a kid and still do it, despite having played Mario 64 back then too.)
      And well, the less I talk about that sheep game the better... It's just.. kinda a German meme kind of game!
