    Very helpful. For me, linear profiles seem to work best with the images that have a lot of highlight detail. For images without that, the profile doesn't seem to help too much vs., for example, Adobe Landscape profile.

    I tried out the linear profiles for my Nikon D3300, D7000 & D7100. These are fantastic. And love them. I will be sending him a RAW file for my D5200 and Olympus E500 & E620. Many thanks for the awesome tip....

    Happiness is TK Friday. I like how your workflow is consistent and I enjoy your the review of your workflow. I guess the next step is to take photo into PhotoShop. Then put image into a smart object. Bring up the Camera Raw filter and then mask out the background artifacts. I am glad based on your tutorials, you inspired my creative thinking. Thanks for all your awesome tutorials.

      Thanks and you are so correct about the opening image as a Smart Object that way you can tweak the RAW File if necessary.

    Thanks Dave for a comprehensive instruction. I was surprised to see the major difference the Auto adjustment did to the Linear Profile compared to the one with a Standard profile. I haven’t seen that happening in Capture One though. I’m glad to see all your warnings using the HSL sliders. It can really ruin an image pretty quickly, in my opinion.

    Loving the linear profile. I have it set to automatically apply on import. Thanks for the great tutorial Dave, loving your channel since I found it. I think it's probably the most useful Photoshop and Lightroom channel on UA-cam 👍👍👍

    One very good reason to use the targeted adjustment tool, in stead of the the individual sliders, is that you avoid a lot of weird artefacts automatically..

    Hi Dave. Thank you very much for your great tutorials!
    Would it possible to create a video for Blending 2-3 Exposures with TK7 GO ?

  • @EdBacon
    @EdBacon 3 роки тому

    1. Would use of the Targeted Adjustment Tool help avoid some artifacting in some cases b/c it is targeting a blended color?
    2. Using the Photoshop color mixer and a mask would allow you to push the colors in the flower and mask out the artifacts. I agree that there are many ways to do the same thing, but once one spends too much time futzing with an image trying to defeat issues like artifacting, one might just step back and try one of those other ways.
    3. The Calibration tools impact color and I believe have a precedence over HSL. Therefore some recommend setting calibration first.
    4. Yes I know the topic really was linear profiles.

  • @davidtaddei419
    @davidtaddei419 2 роки тому

    Hi Dave, many thanks for sharing. I am curious to give it a go as I have never been fully satisfied with the Adobe profiles as starting points in Lightroom. Tweaking the hue and saturation of the primary channels in the Calibration panel then specific colours using HSL as you did here usually helps to fine tune the colours. A slight increase in the saturation of the blue channel often results in much richer colours for my landscape photography.
    Now I have a couple of questions: have you tested how the Calibration panel affects colour rendition when starting from a linear camera profile? Do you foresee any benefit in tweaking the primary channels individually in the Calibration section prior to colour grading? In any case, I will try this when I get a chance :-)
    Thanks in advance, David

    • @thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly

      Good observation. These types of issues show up more easily in out of focus areas. You can get a lot more aggressive with sliders but you need to be cautious.

  • @DB-wx1zs

    When you were messing with the colors, specifically with the reds in the HSL panel, and that red ring artifact was showing up, is that because of the linear profile? Or would that have happened anyway despite what profile it may have been?

    • @thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly
      @thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly  2 роки тому +1

      It was not because of the Linear Profile. It would have happened either way.

    I’m going to have to watch again. I installed the profile but don’t see it unless it’s in my Sony profiles. What is the name in profiles? I made sure it was right camera too.

    • @thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly
      @thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly  3 роки тому

      Ken you have to open up the profile browser by clicking the 4 Squares and it will be in a special category called "Profiles". You then need to click on the Star in the upper right corner to favorite it. Once you make it a favorite it will show up in your drop down Profile List and it will be labeled Linear-(Whatever the Camera Name is ie. ILCE-7RM3)...I just downloaded the Linear Profile for your camera and tried it on one of the images you gave me and it was there and it works. By the way the only time you will see the profile is when you are using a RAW File that takes that profile other then that it won't show up in the List. The profile I downloaded was ILCE-7RM3

    But images taken with my Fuji X-T3 provides 15 Fuji profiles available in LR for my RAW files already; I can choose a profile on my X-T3 camera before I shoot and it is applied to the JPG. I can choose the same/different profile for my RAW image in LR. Why do I need Linear Profiles?

    • @mikebrownhill4662
      @mikebrownhill4662 3 роки тому

      Hi Georgette - you don't necessarily NEED linear profiles. I shoot mainly with Canon gear but I also use a Fuji X-T3 sometimes, because I like Fuji colours for certain scenes. Those Fuji profiles are specifically designed to give a certain look, so if you want to keep that look, then you should normally keep the Fuji profile. However, built-in camera profiles and the Adobe profiles that they provide in LR and camera raw are usually adding in a LOT of contrast (as well as some other things) which you may not want. I shoot a lot of wildlife, for instance, and I find linear profiles work best for me there because I can take the image back to its "most RAW" state (for want of a better phrase!) Once I've done that, I have a lot more editing latitude to build the image I want, without having to fight against the canned profiles and their often-excessive contrast. I definitely get better images out of linear profiles than any of the built-in camera or Adobe profiles. It also makes editing easier a lot of the time - once you have your file in a linear state, you can control highlight and black areas far more easily than if you're using a canned profile with background contrast already added. It depend on the image, of course, and what effect you're going for - I still use Fuji, Canon and Adobe profiles sometimes. For wildlife and other scenes where contrast needs careful control, I use linear profiles... Cheers!

    If I convert my tif files to a dng would a linear profile work? Could a linear profile be made for a scanner?

    • @thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly
      @thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly  3 роки тому

      I am almost certain they have to be the original RAW Files. If you let Lightroom Convert your Original RAW file to DNG you can use the Linear Profile. You can give it a try Dick but I don’t believe it will work. If you try it and it works please let me know.

      @@thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly what if i use the linear profile on a RAW file first and then convert to a DNG prior to applying further adjustments in ACR? Will the linear profile be embedded then? (I am asking because after the new version of the Topaz DeNoise AI, there is the amazing RAW AI which HAS to be used at the beginning on the RAW file (as instructed by Topaz) and the output file is a DNG - how a workflow combining the TK Linear profile AND the Topaz RAW AI would look like?)
