    Great Tutorial Dave....! I've been using the TK7 & 8 for a while now & use the paint contrast fairly frequently; but I never thought about using different layers. Such a common sense & obvious approach, that I was blind to it.... Not anymore. Thank you!

    Dave, thanks so much for introducing me to TK7. I purchased it and am using it a lot. Thanks for continuing to teach us how to use all the features. I. didn't know about this. Please keep doing these. I'm a big fan of yours. You have taught me a lot.

    Great idea for the TK8 panel to have Paint Contrast auto-create three separate layers, one per brush (BWG). :)

    Thank you Dave for another great TK Friday tutorial. I've learnt so much from your Friday sessions over the past few months. This one reminds a little like the dodge and burn but more controlled in the contrast very powerful feature. Who needs a Swiss army knife when you can use TK7 for Photoshop.

    You've taken Paint Contrast to a new level, Dave. Actually, 3 of them (or more, for individual area tweaks of opacity or fill). This is really useful for me, for images where the sensor averaged the lights & darks, and I need to "de-average" those, in order to restore what I saw in the original image. Or, I was there in the middle of the day, when the light was more blah. This is a way to take some of the blah from those images, and make them useful! Thanks!

    Great tutorial, Dave. One suggestion. I find that modifying the intensity (specifically increasing the intensity) of the effect using the Fill can introduce some undesirable colour side effects and Opacity can only be used the reduce the effect since it's at 100% by default. One option is to apply a Levels adjustment (Image>Adjustments>Levels) and use the mid-tone slider to increase or reduce the intensity. The Output sliders can also be used. And there's no colour side effect.

    Really like this technique/effect. Thanks for showing us this. I was looking for a tool to help light/enhance waterfalls better. This will work perfectly. I was wondering. I have some questions on the TK7 action - Spotlight. It doesn't seem to act consistently for me. Could you do a segment on that action too??

    Hello Dave, once again a great tutorial, explaining something I have never used in the TK Panel. I have been practising on my own Flower shots and am amazed at the
    difference it has made. I find that it makes Dodge and Burn redundant in certain images. Tony Kuyper is a genius , but your contribution to understanding the TK Panel is indispensable.
    But I do have a question. When you click the Paint Contrast action you come up with a layer with a White background. I have a Transparent background. And I cannot for the life of me
    find out how to change that. I have the latest version of PS. Any help would be much appreciated.

    • @thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly
      @thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly  2 роки тому +1

      Thank you Geoffrey. My layer is a Transparent Layer just like yours. It probably just looks white on the video, due to video compression, but it is transparent.

    Another great video, Dave! I know that creativity is a subjective thing, but I struggle with when to use (for example), dodge & burn with a stencil vs. linear light blend color amplification vs. paint with contrast. Any guidance?

    • @thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly
      @thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly  2 роки тому +1

      That is tough to answer Roger. I think experimentation is the key. Sometimes you just don't know until you try something. I use Dodging and Burning to either draw attention to an area of the image or the reverse and try to keep the attention off a certain area. Paint with Contrast is great when you really just want to pop the contrast out on a subject in the image and bring attention to it. It is like saying, "hey look at me", of course you don't want to over do it. When you want your Color to really push through the image, the Linear Light Blend mode can really bring them out.

      @@thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly Thanks, Dave, that is helpful!

  • @AcuraTechMan

    Is this a clever way to dodge and burn? When might you use this and when might you dodge and burn with luminosity masks?

    • @thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly
      @thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly  2 роки тому

      It is actually adding contrast but it is darkening and lightening in selective areas, so I suppose you could use it to Dodge and Burn. I personally only use this for adding contrast. Normally I will do my Dodging and Burning using a Soft Light Blend mode for Burning and an Overlay Blend Mode for Dodging. If I want to be extremely accurate with the Dodging and Burning I will use Luminosity Masks.

    • @AcuraTechMan
      @AcuraTechMan 2 роки тому

      @@thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly ok got it, yes, I have been using luminosity masks to dodge and burn also. Great stuff, thank you!
