Yay!! Thank youScott!!! I'll likely have at least one other freebie on the subject of how to start on your linear profile in Lightroom/Camera Raw so that your files still seem more familiar and not too dark to start out. So, a Gamma Curve (a brightening curve) and also a good way to make a preset (with some other special tips). Enjoy!

Make sure you add a 1.8 brightening gamma curve to the image and a slight S-curve by turning contrast up to at least 50. If you do this, you’ll never use another profile the rest of your life. The quality of these is off the charts and you don’t have to undo all of the potentially damaging adjustments that adobe bakes into our raw files.

Absolutely is! Thank you and have fun! You will need to push contrast more to get a same look as you might be used to… This can be done in the curves by doing a “gamma curve”. If you don’t know what that is, just do a Google image search on “gamma curve” and you will see how to bend the curve from the middle, slightly down to the right. That’s it. It does not have to be precise. But it will help bring back to life your file, but now it’s unadulterated and you have all the data! The quality difference is astonishing on so many images.

@@MarkMetternichPhotographyLLC Ok sounds good. I will play around with that. I much prefer to have 100% of the RAW data than Adobe touching anything on import. I want to also get into cinematography and have been playing around with CLOG so this seems almost like the same concept. Flat out of camera but way more editing power. I could probably create and apply a preset during import with this new profile as the default so that I don't have to select it from the profile dropdown on each image. I just don't like every photo showing the "edited" icon when technically I haven't touched it. First world problems lol.
When the linear profile is selected for a CR3/RAW file does it not reveal 100% of the data? Or does this only work strictly with DNG files? If only DNG files I'll have to rethink storage and converting on import options after looking at the pros and cons of each: www.adobe.com/creativecloud/file-types/image/comparison/dng-vs-raw.html I have a NAS storage device, but I don't think that I want to have a DNG for every photo which would double the storage each photo takes up. Especially since I always overshoot and typically only find a few files from the shoot I want to work with.

No, I have never seen a linear profile not be beneficial. But having said that, a person does need to know HOW to handle contrast with a linear profile, because it comes in much darker/flatter.
All linear raw files need a "gamma curve" to the standard (not parametric) CURVES in Lightroom/Camera Raw (like a 1.8 to 2.2). Also an S Curve:

Both camera raw and light room both have the enhance option. I think you can also just save them as a DNG as well.
Otherwise you can use the Adobe DNG converter. This is in adobe bridge. It can also be downloaded from the Adobe website for free. So all you need is a DNG from your particular camera model. After you make it, it just shows up in camera raw.

Hi John. Actually a DNG holds all the data of your original Raw file! All. But if you right click on it in camera raw, or Lightroom and then choose “enhance Raw details” you have a RAW file that far exceeds your original Sony file. Better detail. Better color Fidelity. Ok but what about people that use a color checker to get accurate colors, you can’t do both. I can’t make a custom camera profile and have it linear at the same time. So if I use your method, i just have to deal with off colors!? Seems your profile only adjusts luminance, i more concerned with color accuracy

    • @MarkMetternichPhotographyLLC
      @MarkMetternichPhotographyLLC  2 роки тому

It’s simple. If you’re using the color checker pro you ARE using a linear profile. And then you’re making sure that your colors are correct. Then if you use that profile, BAM! End of story. You are bypassing Adobe‘s damaging adjustments and you have access to all of the data that hit your sensor, excluding the adulterated or damaging adjustments they bake into their profiles. And of course you can get your colors correct. Contrast is another issue. You can deal with contrast however you want.
If you work in a raw layer workflow in Photoshop, you can use a Luminance layer blend mode, and get your contrast however you want without the colors, or hues shifting or changing.

      • Then lastly, a contrast curve (tone mapping) as another separate curve.

@@ralphmastrangelo4818 Great question here! At the moment (until they UPDATE Adobe Lightroom!) PIONT CURVES are now in Adobe Camera Raw masks!
If we draw out a linear gradient OUTSIDE THE IMAGE and AWAY FROM the image, it will allow you to access all the adjustments, including the new Point Curves and effect the entire image! And we have curves on curves, on curves!!! The most powerful thing ever, since 2003 when ACR came out.
      So:
      1. Choose a Linear Raw Profile
      2. Turn off sharpening, turn on "Remove Chromatic Aberration", and then correct your white balance.
      3. Apply an individual Gamma Curve (I almost always start with a 2.2) Curve Mask.
      4. Apply a separate Curve Mask to adjust midtones (overall brightness).
      5. Apply another separate Curve Mask to adjust our End Points (leave a little room at both ends).
      6. Apply a separate Curve Mask to adjust your overall Global Contrast.
      7. Maybe add one more separate Curve Mask to adjust our local contrast (like maybe a graduated Curve Mask over our brighter sky to take down the lights there...
This creates an unprecedented CUSTOM RAW PROFILE absolutely based specifically on the extremely unique needs of our individual image!
With a little bit of going back and forth on our Midtones Curve Mask, End Points Curve Mask, and our Contrast Curve Mask(s) we can now get the most critical and most powerful and the very most foundational adjustments DONE BEFORE sliding even a single slider in Camera Raw (or Lightroom when that UPDATE comes out).
