  • Planning a Motorcycle Trip: Using MyRoute App to Create Daily Routes
    Continuing our discussion on how to plan a motorcycle tip, we are now going to split our "big picture" route into individual segments or days. To do this, we are going to use the MyRoute App which has a great feature for splitting routes.

    I see your going through my neck of the woods in Northern Ontario. Your really going to enjoy the great scenic ride from Nipigon to Sault Ste. Marie Ontario along the Lake Superior Route on our TransCanada Highway 17. I find its just as nice as going through the Canadian Rockies or the western coast of Newfoundland which is incredible also. Happy New Year and happy 60th birthday trip Craig!

    Great video, 𝙖𝙨 𝙖𝙡𝙬𝙖𝙮𝙨 . What resources do you use to research the potential roads you want to travel?

    • @LivingOffTheSlab
      @LivingOffTheSlab  5 років тому +1

      Mainly, I just get on Google and start searching. Or I might have heard about a great road on a forum or in magazines etc. Butler maps are also great, with color coded roads based on quality. If I dont know an area, I will use Google maps and find curvy roads or those that go through forests, etc. You can even zoom in with Google Earth to see what the road actually looks like. You can also go to state tourist sites and get an idea of things to see. That of course depends on what you are interested in. Hope this helps a bit.

    I didn't know there was another part to the Snake, looks like I have to make a trip back there. You are going to love Little Switzerland just be careful, last time I was there someone went over the edge. Have you tried Furkot? Another good route planning tool.

    • @LivingOffTheSlab
      @LivingOffTheSlab  5 років тому +1

      Thanks! I have heard of Furkot, but have not tired it. I used to use Microsoft Streets and Trips which I thought was a great application, but MS decided to can it. I then moved to Tyre to Travel and because I also liked that very much, so I gave MyRouteApp a try and I find that the current generation works very well.

    • @mikemills5144
      @mikemills5144 5 років тому

      @@LivingOffTheSlab with Furkot you can map out your gas stops too, give it a range for your bike (instead of car or RV), specify what time you want to leave, finish for the day, etc. Really a good program.

    Hey Craig what tires do you run on the super ten? And if they're a dual sport tire hows the on road performance?

    • @LivingOffTheSlab
      @LivingOffTheSlab  5 років тому

      For the Alaska trip I ran the Mitas E07 Dakar. It does great off road and is very good on road, but not as good as a street tire. For this upcoming season (20189) I have mounted the Dunlop Trail Smart. Have not had a chance to test them out yet.

    Thanks from the UK, very useful video, I have produced the GPX files but cannot t find an android app that I can use to do turn by turn navigation (I have also tried KML files) Google maps dosn't work. Map.me shows the route on the map as a "bookmark) but there is no way to start navigation.
    Perhaps it is not possible to plan a route on a PC use android to turn by turn, the closest I have come is using waypoints in Google maps but you have to stop at every one take of your gloves and press continue which is not very good when leading a club run

    • @LivingOffTheSlab

      I use my GPS device, so dont have much experience with using a phone, but MyRouteApp and Rever both have phone apps that will navigate. They are not free though. Thanks!

      I have not said yet. My wife and I are discussing how much she wants to come a long on the trip. Right now she is saying she wants to do a few weeks with me, so that would mean I will take the Vision this time.

  • @christophepoteaux3932

    Great video Craig. I have set up my rides with Google map on my Samsung Note. However, looking at Myroute-App, I think I need this for upcoming 3 weeks cross country loop (about 7,500 mile).
    I checked their website. Are you using the All-in-one or the Gold package? I don't see a big difference between the two. I have an old car Tom tom GPS. Probably will need to upgrade. Any recommendations on that end?
    Thanks

    • @LivingOffTheSlab
      @LivingOffTheSlab  5 років тому

      I have the Gold package. It gives me all of the features I need for creating routes and then uploading them to my GPS. I do not use the phone app as I have the GPS. Mine is a Garmin Zumo 390LM, the new model is a 395LM. TomTom would be another good option, but I have not used them, so cannot provide any feedback there. The Zumo line for Garmin are the motorcycle specific, ruggedized and waterproof units. You do pay a premium for those features.

    • @christophepoteaux3932
      @christophepoteaux3932 5 років тому

      Great. I was thinking the gold package to. I'll be looking into motorcycle GPS. Thanks

    • @christophepoteaux3932
      @christophepoteaux3932 5 років тому

      One more question: since I never use a GPS device for such a long distance trip, I was wondering if the GPS (found Garmin Zumo 396 LMT on Amazon) can store that many GPX files? Like when you went to Alaska, or for your big 60 trip...

    • @LivingOffTheSlab
      @LivingOffTheSlab  5 років тому

      Yes, the Garmins allow you to add a micro SD card and then you can store all your routes there. I was able to have all 31 maps on the card. I assume TomTom would do something similar, but you should check.

    Does this program allow you to add a spur? So you don't have to alter your overall route?

    • @LivingOffTheSlab
      @LivingOffTheSlab  5 років тому +1

      You would either create the spur as either a separate route or you could leave the main road and then return on the same map. I did something like that when I went to the Bad Lands in 2017. I think it would depend on who long and elaborate the spur needed to be. Thanks!

    • @stephensmith1034
      @stephensmith1034 5 років тому

      @@LivingOffTheSlab I guess what I would want is a notification that a Spur (cut-off) is coming up, allowing me to take a quick jog to see something, and then return back to my route. Thanks for the contact.

    • @LivingOffTheSlab
      @LivingOffTheSlab  5 років тому +1

      Stephen, this would all be determined by how you create the way points. You could for example, create a way point just prior to a turn-off and then another one five miles down the turn--off road to see a waterfall. Then you would create the next way point back on your main route just after your return from the turn off. This would be better explained in a video, but you essential have complete control to create the route in any way you see fit.

If you need any local back-road info, give me a shout. Thanks so much, Mark.
