In this video I am starting a new series planning for a big trip in 2019. I want to take a 60 days trip around the US and the first step is to create the big picture. That is, I create the vision of the overall trip by identifying the places I want to ride or visit and then letting my mapping software create a basic route. Once this is done, I will go back and break the large route up into individual segments. In this case 60 of them.

I started planning this summer's trip on the last day of my last trip! Lol this year I'm basing my trip around food, family and friends. Starting in MD., my first stop will be Fox Bros. BBQ in Atlanta. On to see a friend in Columbus, GA. Then NOLA for coffee and a few beignets! Austin, TX to visit my mother, Santa Fe, NM. I love riding through eastern TX and NM! On to Denver, Salt Lake to visit family and friends, and back to GC. Up to Henderson, NV. There will be more stops in between that I have tentatively scheduled. That's only a quarter of my trip so far... I plan on 12500 miles in 30 days on about $9000. I'll be camping most of the trip unless I'm staying with friends and family.
As you can see, I'm a highway guy! My preferance is to do 800 miles highway than 300 on the twisties per day. I wish you the best on your trip!
Sounds like we will going through some of the same country. I actually like highway riding too. Once you get out of the cities, just letting the bike roll is very relaxing. For me, I want to have the time to stop and shot video etc... along the way. I have done the big miles and just want to relax this time. If we cross paths, say hello. Have fun planning and ride safe!

Craig. You will probably get lots of advice on your proposed route. Here is mine: On the segment between TN and TX you appear to be travelling through central MS, southern AR. If you have the time you might want to try southern MO and northern AR. The Ozarks are the BEST riding in the central part of this great country. I've been riding those roads since 1979. Beautiful and traffic free. US 160 in MO and AR highways 23,7,123 ,14,27 and 88 are fantastic. Whatever routes you take I wish you a great journey and will be eagerly awaiting your videos. Tino

The North Shore of Lake Superior is some of the most scenic travel we have enjoyed. You will get MANY suggestions, I am sure, of places to check out. My suggestion is Kakebeka Falls near Thunder Bay, Ontario. It's one of the most stunning falls I have seen besides Tahquamenon Falls in Michigan's Upper Peninsula and Niagara Falls. We will enjoy seeing your preparations for this trip, similar to the Alaska trip a couple years ago. Thanks for sharing your experiences via video. Part of what get me through the winter to the next riding season.

Hi Craig! The trip looks amazing. I watch all of your videos and your ADV bike selection process video and AK trip video helped me finalize my adv bike. I am also a Tenere owner now and couldn't be happier with the bike. Next year, I will try to plan a trip on my Tenere.

Through Idaho I would reccomend the Lowman loop! Best riding I've ever done! There are even hot springs just off the highway! Cheers!

I was in Canyonlands, Arches and Grand Canyon this summer. I was on four wheels unfortunately, but I loved that entire area.
I hope to be riding my Super Tenere from here in north east Montana around the north side of Lake Superior and down into Michigan this summer. I'll be following along on your planning!

How cool. In just the past few days I decided to I was going to take a 4-6 week ride across America in the summer of 2021 when I turn 60. I saw your video title and thought, this could help me plan that trip, only to see we've got the same idea for our 60th Bday. I agree, there is a "Best way" for each individual, and we are all different individuals, so My "Best way" is probably NOT your best way, but as long as it works, that is "GREAT!".

Thanks. I hope that I am still able to fo this stuff at 70 and beyond. But, the truth is that we dont know. So, rather that wait, I am going to do it now. My point in relaying that story about Sam Manicom, is that some people talk about having adventures, but they really don't want true hardship. Who in their right mind wants their bike to break down or a riding partner to have an accident? Both of which have happened to me. Stuff happens and and you deal with it, but you never go out seeking bad things to happen.

I called it "The Big Loop" when I did it... route pretty similar (south through Blue Ridge mtns to TotD area, west to Arkansas, SW through OK, TX, NM, AZ to CA. North to Seattle (some PCH, most in the mtns) East to the Dakotas then a flatland sprint home to NY. Around 11,000 miles in 31 days (21 or 22 days on the road, rest of the time visiting family). If you're actually interested in specific route recommendations I can throw in a few, but here are a couple of big area's and things to think about:
- Temperature is one of the bigger (if not the biggest) planning considerations: Are you planning the trip in late spring when the South is still comfortable? (that's what we did... started 2nd week of May with the idea that it would be June when I got to the PacNW). If that's the case then don't be too attached to your route... we were planning to spend several days in the Colorado/Utah area but when we got to Oklahoma at the 'decision point'... they had a foot of snow on the ground in Colorado. SO... we headed south to NM/AZ and that turned out to be some fantastic riding. Even skewing south we had freezing temps near the Grand Canyon and the next day it was 110 in the Mohave/Anza Borrego area. A month later and the bulk of the south would have been VERY uncomfortable (Hot/Humid in the S/SE and Hot and more HOT in the SW). Then when I got up to the PacNW, all the passes were still closed and JUST opened up the day before I needed to head East. Glacier was still closed in early June when I was in that area. I had several camping nights near freezing. If you go earlier you'll almost certainly need to stay farther south than you're planning... if you go later than parts of the south are not going to be much fun. In either case you may find yourself needing to alter the plan based on conditions.
- I agree with others that Southern Missouri/Northern Arkansas is some fantastic riding (IMO because of lighter traffic it's AS GOOD as the TotD area). Southern Arkansas/Alabama... not so much. If the trip is about the ride then I'd try to get there... with 60 days you have more than enough time! When I looked at a map of our ride there was so much zigging and zagging I was surprised we actually got anywhere!
- Area North East of San Diego (Palomar/Montezuma/Anza Borrego) has great riding and isn't as overcrowded as the LA area.
- Pacific Northwest! - You're pretty much skipping it but IMO it was the best riding on my trip.
- Looping above Superior - I thought hard about doing that and still want to, though my understanding is it's not "epic" riding but rather an "I did it" sort of ride.
- Finally - Crazy Horse Monument > Rushmore for tourisim'ing unless you like being surrounded by a million people... but Devil's Tower >> both (though I'm a not a big 'national monument' sort of guy... ymmv). And on the subject of tourisim'ing... any of the big hot spots are MUCH better during the week and it's another reason to plan the trip earlier when all the tax deductions are still in school. I hit Sequoia on a weekend and it was 100% bumper to bumper traffic... Yosemite early on a Monday was very pleasant. Yellowstone on a Saturday was very busy... next time I either skip them or schedule so they're all during the week. Same for TotD... weekdays are your friend. If you like parks and monuments... get the national park pass - you get free/reduced entry to national parks/forests and reduced rate camping (as low as $7/night in some areas)... cost $80 or so but I figure it saved me $250 or more.
I was pretty whipped by the end of the month... but after a couple weeks of recovery I was ready to do it again! Anyone who enjoys travel and motorcycling owes themselves this trip at some point in their life.
Thanks for all the great info. Timing can sometimes be tough. As you said, some of the higher elevations do not open until late June or July. When we were in Glacier in early July, the road had only been open for a week or so. On the other hand, if you go too late then the desert section will be extremely hot. I will probably get out of here in June. There are some additional places I would like to see, but I want to see some family along the way, so the route has been set to accommodate where they live. I will probably go over it several times before it is set. Thanks again!

Exciting plans. Makes we want to have my sixtieth birthday... again. There is the old expression, "The adventure begins when the plans go awry" but in my own riding, I've found the adventure begins when you strap the bike down on the ferry. But, I don't see one of those along this route. Nothing mentioned of fellow travelers on this one, of course it would be difficult to find another with sixty days availability. Peter and Stephen must be envious though. Looking forward to your reports.

Thanks, this will be a great series. Can you discuss planning for routine bike maintenance along the route. How do you plan for oil changes, possibly tires, and scheduled bike maintenance? Also, how do keep your battery changed over an extended trip? Do you plug in a battery tender at the camp sites or motels?

I see that you are planning on doing the North Shore of Lake Superior. I will suggest one side trip. From Grand Marais, MN ride to the end of the Gunflint Trail a poplar ride.

Somewhat timely for me, as this year I will finally make my trip to the BRP and Skyline Drive. Something I've wanted to do since I bought my first bike in 2013. I've been to northern Indiana a couple of times and for 2.5 years I was motorcycle commuting between Mobile, AL where I live and Houma, LA where I work. So I've gotten enough saddle time over the years. Like you, I'm a planner and budgeter, but my original plan keeps changing. At first I was just going to stay the course from south to north with very little if any excursion of the main route, then come down the east coast doing sort of a "Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives" run looking for all those great little eating spots highlighted on the show. Lately though I'm thinking about spending a little more time on the BRP and the surrounding roads as well as Skyline Drive, and maybe not even come home on the east coast. I might continue further north and then head west toward Indiana again (my original home). Anyway, short story long, thank you for making this series of videos.
Thank you! The Blue Ridge is a near nice road and well worth doing the entire length. I have done that twice, once each way and then ridden parts of it in conjunction with other roads. There are a lot of very nice roads that cross or parallel the BRP. You cannot go wrong either way. The speed limit on the Parkway is 45 and it is patrolled, so don't plan on much more than 200 miles a day. That is a nice pace that allows you to stop and see the sights. I will be heading down that way during the first week in June, but staying off of the Parkway this time. If we cross paths, say hello. Have a great time!

It looks like you’re going to be in the Sault Ste. Marie area? Do yourself a solid and take the short ride down to the Mackinac Bridge. It is something to see. It’s 5 miles long and connects the upper and lower peninsulas of Michigan. As you ride over it you can look down through the steel grating and see the Straights of Mackinac below. Extremely exciting and a bit unnerving at the same time.

Thanks. The HD trip planner works very well, and is free. The MyRoute App cost about $30 per year for the Gold package, which you will want for all the good features.
Going to be interesting following your process. I'm starting my planning for a 10-12 week, what i am calling a sloppy, jagged four corners. Newfoundland to Florida to Los Angeles to Tofino, British Columbia and back. Many of the same highlights that you mentioned. I'm hauling a tent trailer and will use it as base camp for day trips. I've done the big picture and will follow how you break it down. Totally agree with you on the "best" way to do anything.

@@LivingOffTheSlab Would love to cross paths at some point. Was down your way passing through (and return) to do the Tail of the Dragon and Wheels Through Time at the end of Octobrrrr. Camped half the trip but not on the way back. I appreciate being off the ground in the Mini Mate as well as having a 2 burner stove and full cooler. I like cooking when I camp. I carry too much camera gear but now that's not a space problem either. You are right, 2-up one cannot really camp and it's totally hotelling it. Retired in Sept. and now I have the time... just need to budget the money.
What you describe is what I was thinking too. Get off the ground and have room to carry a small stove for cooking. Kind of do the motorcycle RV lifestyle. But as you said, budgets are a concern...damn money, it always gets in the way....lol. ride ssfe!
Looks like a great route. You will love Death Valley. If you are doing Zion don’t miss Bryce Canyon. In my opinion much more scenic and you can ride to each overlook . Zion is geared for hikers. Also are you doing monument Valley?

My wife and I just did the west coast in May 2018 on our Tenere. We decided to go in mid May to avoid the schools letting out. If you go then make sure to bring the heated gear since you will need it N California, Oregon and Washington. We ran into a lot of rain and fog in parts of the trip. In Union Creek Oregon there is a place called Beckies on Hwy 62 which is right before the turn off to Crater Lake. The food was good and a great place to stop for a break. Crater Lake is a real beauty. When you come out of Crater Lake and if you go left the valley you will ride through is very pretty. We ended up going to Bend Oregon that day. On a side note, most of the places you mentioned in Utah, Nevada and S. California I have ridden a lot and be prepared for the heat if you go more mid summer. All absolutely great riding areas. Your video was spot on in my opinion. Want to have fun. Enjoy your trip. Its an great choice.
Thanks, I appreciate the suggestions. I know it is going to be hot running through the desert. Back in 2011, we headed from Boston to AZ and it was 117 crossing KS and MS. Much worse than the desert because of the humidity. We will dress and monitor our fluid intake accordingly. Lots of layers for this trip.
Living Off The Slab ...Hydration is key. We just moved from Colorado to Florida. We have ridden all over the west on motorcycle as well as the Southeast (blue ridge parkway/skyline, etc.). A couple years ago my wife and I took a Triumph Explorer from Colorado Springs to Glacier and back. The wind turned out to be the biggest challenge. The tunnel in Zion is a little over a mile long and is quite an interesting drive through because it is so dark. If you have the time, do the million dollar hwy in Colorado (hwy550). I promise you it will be a ride worth doing. If you want to do a little off road riding that is not to bad, go from Silverton Co to Lake City Co via Cinnamon Pass. Not to aggressive but it is so beautiful. Enjoy your trip...I know you will. Is your wife going with you and are you on the Tenere or your Victory. Either way a good trip.
Not sure about the bike yet. I want to take the Tenere, but depending on what my wife wants to do, I may end up on the Victory. We'll see. Thanks again.
I've done a bunch of distance rides with a local group. It could be chaotic if these trips weren't somewhat planned. Stick to a schedule and don't put too many miles on in a day cause that can ruin your trip for sure. Enjoy America! There's certainly a lot to see, and do! Oh - and pack for warmth and weather. You can always take layers off.

Living Off The Slab I’ve ridden out east from AZ the past three summers but every time I’ve attempted to hit the Natchez Trace, big storms redirect my route north. Hoping again at the end of July to finally hit the Trace.
I am interested to see your route planning. I have tried at least half a dozen different options and always end up back at Basecamp even though it isn’t the easiest program to use. It is bar far the best one at loading routes into my Garmin GPSes. However, I am always ready to try yet another option in the quest to find one as capable as Basecamp, yet that is easier to use.
MyRoute gives you the ability to use different map sets and compare how they will calculate, you have to buy the Gold . I use Google maps and compare to the Garmin HERE map. I then add way points so that they both calculate the same. So far this creates a pretty solid map.
LTVoyager I too use the web-based MyRouteApp. It will transfer my planned routes to my TomTom Rider very easily. It claims the same capability with Garmin devices.
I am a Gold member like Craig. Prior to MyRouteApp, I used TyreToTravel Pro as a free sub came with my TT 400.
Never used Basecamp so I can”t directly compare, but for me, my current solution set is wonderful.
I also have many Butler maps - and often plan routes to catch the great rides they’ve documented.

I have wanted to ride the PCH for a few years now.
I was going to do it this last September, but all the fires forced me to delay that trip.
The research I’ve done and the people I’ve talked to that have ridden it, all have told me to ride from the North toward the South.
They say you want the Pacific Ocean breeze to be coming at you from the right side.
They also say the view is much better.
Just food for thought.
On another note, when I decided not to ride the PCH, I rode the Smokey Mountains instead. (I know from one side of the country to the other in a blink of an eye. )
It was a great trip, however because of Hurricane Florence I was forced to trailer. Which turned out to be a good thing because of the severe rain I ran in to a few times.
I camped just outside of Robbinsville and actually did a lot of riding in and around the Blue Ridge Parkway.
It was a great solo trip.
I needed the alone time.

Fires and landslides are always concerns out there and I will have alternate routes planned. I think my route is going to take me south to north, but I will try and stop as much as possible for pictures etc. Thanks!
Caltrans has a site where you just type in the the route number and it tells you any and all construction/closures. Pretty useful since everything is on fire or washed out. They also just got a massive influx of cash for projects from a new tax so they are working on stuff all over the place

I was not sleeping well on that trip. I am hoping that doing fewer miles and some changes to my kit will work out better...well see. No friends yet. They may decide to join for a while, but they cannot take the time off to do the entire trip. Thanks!
@@LivingOffTheSlab If it helps you out I have a Thermarest cot and I put the Klymit Static V2 air mattress on it and I sleep like a dream. Oh and an inflatable pillow, can't remember the name but I can look it up if needed, and I wrap that in a sweater.
I ended up getting a new bag that is not a mummy bag and has no zipper. Allows me to spread out more and thus helps my shoulders. I used it once last fall and it was much better. Thanks!

Hello Gentlemen, I am a planner too, I prefer to have things sorted out as much as possible. Our longest trips for now was 3,500 miles (5,500 km) . We - hubby and I - are planning a 30 days trip for 2020 across west US, we are from Canada, Montreal. So any recommendations are more than welcome. Have not decided yet. If Cathy wants to join me, which she says she does for at least part of the ride, I will take the vision. We will make a decision early next year.
60 days to see all those places is not going to be enough time. You already are going to be averaging 4-5 hours a day just riding to cover all the mileage. Add in eating, setting up and down camp or checking in and out of hotels, taking care of yourself and your bike etc.... and it won't leave much time at all to actually enjoy the destinations.
I guess we will find out, but I did 12,000 in 35 days and while it would have been nice to have more time, I took thousands of pictures and saw some amazing sight. For this trip, I am going to do the same mileage in 60 days. Am i going to be able to spend several days at each place, no, but I will still get to see a lot of great locations.
@@LivingOffTheSlab You picked a bunch of awesome locations. No doubt you are going to see a lot in a short time, just not in any depth. Birthday 61 you can go back and spend more time at your favorites. Happy upcoming 60th. Still going to be an epic ride. Looking forward to all the new videos.
