I have a black sr5 and I never knew this was possible! I’m so tempted to try it but scared I’ll mess it up. I’ve never done anything like this before. Your results are amazing!
Thanks Brittney. Here's a suggestion if you want to attempt it. Don't go all in right away. Take 1 wheel and just focus on that. Take you time with it and learn what is working and what isn't in regards to spray angles and how fast/slow you are spraying. The worst case is you mess up 1 wheel. Let it dry and peel it off and start fresh. Just make sure you put enough material on so it peels off. If it is too thin it won't peel correctly. If it looks good, move on to the next wheel on a different day. You will get progressively better. Most importantly, don't try to stray from the correct prep, wetness, and # of coats.
Only on the tires before spraying the wheels. you don't need to put it around the emblems, it will peel off the paint easily and break at the raised emblems as long as you build it up correctly.
I bought the kit and it arrived yesterday. I hope to do my Porsche Cayenne (2013) today. I will follow your steps and get it done. I will do the 4 wheels and the Porsche Cayenne on the back. I will also do the chrome window trim around the front and back windows. I hope mine comes out as nice as yours. Great video and it was very helpful. Thank You.
Great results, well made instructional video. Let me ask, did you have any over spray issues on the body fenders from not masking them. I'm asking cause i want to hyperdip my 06 Tundra wheels and i like that you didnt have to take extra masking steps.
I did not get any overspray on the body from the wheels. i did get a little overspray from the masking of the rear emblem. I should have put another layer around on that, but it was easy cleanup. It shouldn't be an issue doing the wheels on a Tundra as long as it's not windy. On trucks, with the wider sidewall and distance between the wheels and body panels, it shouldn't require masking. On some cars where that distance is less, it may require masking.
Thank you. Here is the information on the roof rack. I will try to find a link for you but there are so many options for it. It is the Rhino Platform Rack. The size of the rack is 49"w x 60" L. I am using the Vortex SX crossbars that attach to the factory rails. I believe the part # is JA9141 which is the legs and the bars or the separate part #'s are SX100 for the 4 legs and VA126B for the 2 black crossbars. Please confirm all #'s
This is the second video I've watched with Hyper Dip and neither of y'all masked off the car. Are you not worried about overspray with this product? Thanks!
With the 4Runner, no need to mask around the wheels because of the size of the sidewalk and distance between the tire and fenders. With a car, I would mask a bit. Regarding the emblems, I did run some masking paper about a foot on all sides. For this, I would recommend running another layer (2') on all sides. Especially you are dealing with wind. Overall, my method worked out fine for my conditions. I also painted cars for a living for several years so I sort of knew the threshold of containing the over spray
6:50 I wonder what it'd look like stopping here. It kinda looks nice ....... like a gunmetal brushed look but ......... through the camera it's hard to tell
The issue would be once you decide to remove the coating it would not be thick enough to remove correctly. If it has not built up you can't peel it off it large sheets
Yes, they clean up fine. You just need to care for them a little differently. No harsh chemicals and be gentle with scrubbing. I don't really see a reason to scuff. I did this almost 2 years ago and do not have any issues with adhesion. As long as you prep correctly and do those 1st few tack coats, it will adhere to the substrate (wheels, emblems, etc). I also don't think scuffing would be beneficial anyway, being a former auto body tech who has painted cars for years. There is a distinct difference between automotive paint in which you scuff the substrate for adhesion and a product like this.
No Dip Release for emblems. Prep it thoroughly with the Pre Dip paying extra attention to the emblem edges. Make sure you do the recommended # of layers so it is thick enough to grab an edge for pulling when dry
Great make over, love the video and the result. How are they holding up so far? Any idea how long they would last in a wet place like Houston? We got lot of rain here. Also, do you have to be careful when washing the car or they just cure and end up being like paint? Thanks in advance for your feedback.
Water should not be an issue. I was concerned about the water jets through the carwash as I don't have time to hand wash this vehicle. I did a video of the 1st time (see below). I also ran it though the Costco car wash which has more powerful jets nd so far no issues. ua-cam.com/video/5QWPJvWGTk4/v-deo.html&ab_channel=AZOverland
Looks great! Thanks for the tips, might try a bronze dip on my army green 4runner. Hopefully it does well with the dry heat of Arizona, I'm in central California, very dry and hot as well.
Overall, how long did it take you to do this and it sounded like you did 12 to 15 coats per tire. I just scooped this up for my 2008 Toyota sequoia. Great video thanks!
I think it took about 4-5 hours but that included the front and back in addition to the wheels. I think 10-12 coats is sufficient if done correctly. Good luck!
Yes. It sprays a bit different but seems to lay down a bit smoother and doesn't require the gloss enhancer that Plastidip does if you want a bit of a sheen.
Well, you would need the proper number of jacks and jack stands to be able to get all 4 wheels off and have the vehicle safe. This is not necessarily easy and most people don't have that equipment. I do have it, but this is much easier to do with wheels on. Also, you would need to allow the wheels to dry completely before handling them to get them back on.
@@makingsense2017 OK, sorry, I misunderstood when I replied to this originally. It comes off very easily if you do the Dip Release and make sure you have enough layers. If you go too thin, then you will have issues getting it off. When done correctly it literally peels off in 1 piece easily. Sorry i didn't record that part, it was a long day at that point and my camera and i were both tired
I really dislike the look of chrome or aluminum wheels on certain vehicles, and this is certainly one of them. In my opinion is goes from a "soccer mom" look to looking sleeker and meaner. But yes, to each his own. I appreciate your comment!
Thanks. If they are peeling you would need to get all of that coating completely off first before refinishing them or the top coat (Hyperdip or whatever you paint it with) will peel with whatever is under it.
If it's Hyperdip or Plastidip, and it was applied correctly, it will peel off. It's like a rubberized coating. If that doesn't work they have a product on their website that is supposed to help dissolve it
Looks awesome!!! I’m getting a new Mini Cooper S 2- door all black but I’m sure there are some things not black that I’ll need to do this to!! Thank you for this video!!!
Looks awesome. Want to do that to my 4runner supposed to get in another month or so. What do you think durability will be? Wonder what lug nuts will look like after taking off and putting back on.
I'm hoping to get at least a ear out of the coating, but we shall see if the Arizona sun has different plans. I might have to do a video of removing the lugs. Not sure what the result will be but i will have a back up set of black lugs ready
Possibly. From the website (they say PlastiDip but the same holds true for HyperDip): Since are differences between genuine chrome and factory "chrome" finishes. Plasti Dip may adhere and react perfectly normal over one chrome surface, but may have issues over another. Chrome emblems, badges and trim are traditionally fine - but a certain set of chrome wheels for example may cause adhesion issues. Due to the differences between the many "chrome" surfaces, it's difficult to predict the result for each application. Although it works fine most of the time, testing may be required first to confirm Plasti Dip is a suitable product for your personal application.
I've run it through the automatic car washes numerous times with no issue. If I wash it home and I use a pressure washer I just don't put the stream right on the wheels or other hyper dipped parts directly?
I have had this on for almost 2 1/5 years now and it still looks good. I did not experience what you did. Maybe yours was not applied thick enough or the coats weren't wet enough. I'm not sure what happened, but you can see the condition of my wheels after 1 year here ua-cam.com/video/_RprxIX2NX0/v-deo.html
My question is how long did this last before you needed to do it again?! Seems to me it makes more sense to just buy the black overlays 🤷♂️ unless you’re using a color not offered.
That's a great question! I actually forgot originally and backed it out a few feet before I realized. Thank goodness the plastic only touched the wheel in 1 spot on the edge. It was easily covered with the remaining coats
My tape borders got messed up , pretty tricky when there is no hard line between surfaces as its a connected piece. maybe a razor blade along the tape line will help keep it straight
What area of the vehicle were you doing? In the front of the 4Runner I had a similar situation but I ran an Xacto knife carefully where I wanted the break and it turned out real well.
The wheels came out perfect, I bought a trd pro roof rack and the look is very appealing to me. I'm going to peel off the grill and do it again using a razor blade before peeling the tape
Depending on the size of the wheel and design, it could take up to 5. I can see some smaller wheels using 4. I actually had some leftover. Respirator is definitely recommended. Yes, you can do without, but it's your choice ultimately. Thanks for watching
I've been asked this so many times and it is a great question. I haven't taken a wheel off yet. But, I will get some black lugs if they don't hold form the impact gun.
They are actually factory size but look a big bigger because they are All Terrains. No, There is a lot to take into consideration. Are you able to get the vehicle completely off the ground to get all 4 wheels off; tools/equipment? Can you keep your vehicle on jack stands until the next day without wheels while it cures? You should spray them upright, not laying down, etc
Hey my fellow AZ. We actually have the exact trim mand color 4runner. I just got mine and considering doing the same thing. Thank you for the video! I also purchased some of your recommendations
NW valley isn't far at all. 15 to 20 mins drive. I'm actually going to focus first in figuring out installing a push and rocker buttons for hatch opener and also rear window from the inside(back end). For camping purposes. Let me know if you're planning to do it. Thanks
It is better to do it in the heat then freezing temps. The material will dry faster so experiment with spray times as far as going moderate vs light. You definitely don't want to get runs buy going too heavy but also don't want to go too light and have a rough textured finish. Also, try to avoid doing it in direct sunlight. Start early. Good luck!
I was going to buy the trd wheels for my new 2021 4runner but this is a cheaper way to get it done.. I just bought the covers for the emblems should of did this dip instead 🤷🏽♂️
These are actual rock sliders which is what I needed. They bolt heavily into the frame rail to provide maximum protection if going over a large rock or similar and coming down hard near the rocker panel area. Also protect in other ways the side steps wont. Depends on what you like to do though
I just hyper dipped my wheels but made a mistake when applying the dip, the bottom side of the outer ring on all 4 wheels didn’t get fully covered due to my spraying angle and you can notice some silver coming through. Any suggestions on fixing this? Do I simply go over the spot again? Any prep needs to be done?
Sorry to hear that. You definitely want to hit every angle possible, but you obviously know that now🙃 You should be able to re-prep and spray. Make sure the wheel is very clean and dry. Hit it with the Pre-Dip spray and microfiber towel and spray it again.
I have not had any damage from rocks. I have been traveling on an Arizona freeway about 12 hrs per week , many times behind work trucks and have been off-road 4 times since I sprayed it. I just washed the 4Runner today and went out to look after your asked this question. I have no rock chips. The only damage is from a branch that scraped my lower valence and took a little material with it. Good news is, the paint below that scrape is in good condition so it protected it pretty well.
Did you use Hyperdip or Plastidip? I think I'm coming up on 8 months and no fade yet with the Hyperdip. We are just getting with summer now so I will report back in a few months with updates
Every wheel is different because of the type of lug nuts and the if they are recessed or not. I did a video on my removing the lugs which I will put below. As far as damage to the Hyper dipped wheel itself, there should be none if you handle it by the tires when moving and mounting them. If you grab by the actual wheel itself, yes, there could be damage to the coating. If the lugs get scuffed and show, you can repkace the lugs with black ones. I will be doing another video soon on the condition of the Hyperdip after 1+ years ua-cam.com/video/2UnvQ9pRUcE/v-deo.html&ab_channel=AZOverland
Nice Job. The back emblem came out especially nice. My polished aluminum wheels on my F-150 Platinum have started to pit and was looking to do the Hyperdip also. Just trying to decide between their Glossy Metallic Grey and Glossy Metallic Black (the truck is Metallic Black). Thanks.
Thank you. I would lean towards the Metallic Black, but that is just my opinion. I'm not sure how the Gray shows but the Black isn't a very deep black so i think it may go very well with your set up!
I get this question a lot, specifically about if this product gets compromised on the lugs when taking the wheels off. I haven't rotated tires yet though I am about to do so. I will have to document if there is any damage. However, I will replace them with black lug nuts if there is. It is still worth the money to change the look the way I wanted. If you do decide to order feel free to use the link in the video description. It is an affiliate link though when I made this video I was not in communication with this company at all. Good Luck!
@@AZOverland2017, thanks again! I did use the link to buy, and got a first time discount as well. Beat Amazon by $20! I was thinking about removing the wheels to dip them, mostly because I tend to get runs when I paint!
@@CenCalBimat Great! 2 things. Spray cans cans are not ideal to spray when holding them horizontally. While it can be done you may get some spitting or the cans might not be used all the way. I understand about being concerned by runs and especially because this is fairly thin and can run quite easily. Make sure your 1st 2 coats are very light!
Great job. Looks good. Thinking about doing this to my rims on my TRD ORP. Where did you get the hyperdip from? Does it come as a kit with the dip release, pre dip spray and the pistol grip handle for spray can?
If you spray it according to the directions, yes. Some people don't spray enough on and stop when they believe they have coverage. The issue is if it is applied too thin it will make removal difficult.
@@Ace61527 possibly depending on the size and design of the wheel. Just make sure you apply the proper amount of coats. Mine was coated at probably 8 or so but you need to build the correct thickness.

It would depend on the area you live and what you use the vehicle for. My wheels still look the same after about 5 months and being used as a daily driver and off-road vehicle. We will see how it holds up to the AZ summers. I would think on the low end 1 year up to several years
Yes, it is. There was enough space between the the wheel and the fenders/quarter panel. So no issue there. I don't remember if I showed the Dip being pulled off the tire or not. My alloy rims on my Mazdas are peeling and was wondering if it would work on it ? Nice vid
Thanks. If they are peeling you would need to get all of that coating completely off first before refinishing them or the top coat (Hyperdip or whatever you paint it with) will peel with whatever is under it.
Ok good to know.👍
I bought a used truck where the wheels were painted with something similar and it's chipping. Should i sand or just wipe off like you did?
If it's Hyperdip or Plastidip, and it was applied correctly, it will peel off. It's like a rubberized coating. If that doesn't work they have a product on their website that is supposed to help dissolve it
Will this stuff peel off where the adhesion promoter was applied if u want to remove it?
Yes, peels right off if applied to correct thickness. Could be a pain if applied too thin

Looks awesome. Want to do that to my 4runner supposed to get in another month or so. What do you think durability will be? Wonder what lug nuts will look like after taking off and putting back on.

Been thinking about doing this to my blk '12 tacoma, yours looks great 👌🏽
What color did do you for your hyper dip? Shadow black, piano black?
Shadow Black
Do you think I’d be able to use this hyper dip on chrome rims?
Possibly. From the website (they say PlastiDip but the same holds true for HyperDip):
Since are differences between genuine chrome and factory "chrome" finishes.
@@AZOverland2017 thanks for the information. I'm going to try to test a small surface before buying the whole set of Hyper Dip.
it look really nice, Any recommendations when you are going to wash the car?
I've run it through the automatic car washes numerous times with no issue. If I wash it home and I use a pressure washer I just don't put the stream right on the wheels or other hyper dipped parts directly?
I tried it... after leas rhan 2 months the brake dust destroys finish ... lots of work for not much lngevity ...
I have had this on for almost 2 1/5 years now and it still looks good. I did not experience what you did. Maybe yours was not applied thick enough or the coats weren't wet enough. I'm not sure what happened, but you can see the condition of my wheels after 1 year here

My question is how long did this last before you needed to do it again?!
Seems to me it makes more sense to just buy the black overlays 🤷♂️ unless you’re using a color not offered.
Still have it on. Emblems are perfect. Wheels look very good with some delamination at the very outer rim

Great tutorial! Do you have to use this in the shade? I don’t have a garage.
Thanks. It does not need to be applied in the shade. I would be cautious though spraying it in direct sunlight on a hot AZ day.
Huge difference, for the better
Agreed
What happens to this when you rotate your tires?
I did a video that should answer your question:
ua-cam.com/video/2UnvQ9pRUcE/v-deo.html
Did you get any overspray on the actual body of the 4Runner?
I did notice overspray on the back window, other than that, no. It was minimal and came off easily with a razor blade.
I was curious about overspray as well. My GX is white and I'm going with Piano Black. Probably taking the wheels off!
Question when u backed it up outside did u remove the plastic bags behind your wheels??
That's a great question! I actually forgot originally and backed it out a few feet before I realized. Thank goodness the plastic only touched the wheel in 1 spot on the edge. It was easily covered with the remaining coats
@@AZOverland2017 Thank u for responding and u did a great job
@@JAY-lu3cx I sincerely appreciate that sir
My tape borders got messed up , pretty tricky when there is no hard line between surfaces as its a connected piece. maybe a razor blade along the tape line will help keep it straight

5 cans for 4 wheels? also.. respirator really necessary?
Depending on the size of the wheel and design, it could take up to 5. I can see some smaller wheels using 4. I actually had some leftover.
Respirator is definitely recommended. Yes, you can do without, but it's your choice ultimately. Thanks for watching
Will it come off of the lug nuts when they are removed?
I've been asked this so many times and it is a great question. I haven't taken a wheel off yet. But, I will get some black lugs if they don't hold form the impact gun.
@AZOverland2017. What size tire are those? Do you think it would be easier to take your tires off?
They are actually factory size but look a big bigger because they are All Terrains.
No, There is a lot to take into consideration. Are you able to get the vehicle completely off the ground to get all 4 wheels off; tools/equipment? Can you keep your vehicle on jack stands until the next day without wheels while it cures? You should spray them upright, not laying down, etc
Hey my fellow AZ. We actually have the exact trim mand color 4runner. I just got mine and considering doing the same thing. Thank you for the video! I also purchased some of your recommendations
That's Great Sheryl! If you end up doing it and are near the NW valley let me know. Maybe we do a video on it
NW valley isn't far at all. 15 to 20 mins drive. I'm actually going to focus first in figuring out installing a push and rocker buttons for hatch opener and also rear window from the inside(back end). For camping purposes. Let me know if you're planning to do it. Thanks
@@sherylh2567 Well, I didn't, but now I'm intrigued. Do you have a link, I would like to read up more on this. Thank you
Thanks so much for this video. I’m so going to attempt it this weekend. Wondering if the desert heat will wreak havoc if I do this in hot weather…..
Rock sliders, or Armadillo RS side steps?
How did your touch up job turn out?
Great video and info.
Just curious on how it holds up to rock chips?
I have to travel on gravel a few times a week.
How many hyperdip bottle does it come when you ordered it? Does it come with the deep release and the predip spray?
The Wheel Kit comes with 5 cans. Yes, it comes with everything you need including the plastic when you get the Kit
Clean job... 4Runner looks great. Only problem is when you go to have your tires rotated the lugs will get messed up.

@@AZOverland2017 I used the basic black plasti dip , I might try the hyper dip

How long before having to don’t again? I mean how long will it last?
I don't have an answer for that. This was my 1st time using the product so we shall see. I'm thinking up to year with the weather we have here in AZ.
Any issues with the dip coming off when tires are rotated? That was my only hesitation.
I will be doing another video soon on the condition of the Hyperdip after 1+ years

Thank you. I would lean towards the Metallic Black, but that is just my opinion. I'm not sure how the Gray shows but the Black isn't a very deep black so i think it may go very well with your set up!

Just convinced me! Looks really nice! I always see hyperdip applied with the wheels on the vehicle. No issues removing the wheels after to rotate?
I get this question a lot, specifically about if this product gets compromised on the lugs when taking the wheels off. I haven't rotated tires yet though I am about to do so. I will have to document if there is any damage. However, I will replace them with black lug nuts if there is. It is still worth the money to change the look the way I wanted.
The spray handle is an additional accessory.
Yes, the kit comes complete minus the spray handle
Great vedio! Is it easy to clean up? If I need to return the car.
If you spray it according to the directions, yes. Some people don't spray enough on and stop when they believe they have coverage. The issue is if it is applied too thin it will make removal difficult.
Love your intro music choice haha
