  • How to Love the Process: 'Follow Your Passion' is bad advice. Following your passion often leads to dead ends and encourages us to endlessly pursue a perfect dream job that does not exist. With any job, there are parts you will and will not enjoy.

    Boy is this the truth. I was never initially passionate for school or becoming a PA, I grew to love the process. Seeing myself improve and finding joy in those small but meaningful academic achievements along the way. That is what kept me on track. Thanks for the great video.

    Instead of "Follow your passions" we should change it to "Find a job you Think you'll Enjoy and be Good at, but be Realistic regarding your Abilities".
    Too long I know, but kids need better guidance because most are fed useless information about the future and they end up lost, which is sad. High school fails to prep you for the real world, and I think they should change that. AMAZING video tho, I agree 1000%

      Fry Wolf i think high school is just a place for you to learn how to learn, along with some knowledge you may use in further study. but i think it's mainly for cultivating the culture of learning rather than the learning itself. and about other real world things that school doesn't teach us, i think that should be thought outside of school such as by the family. because you need the real world to teach you about the real world. just my 2cents.

    • @astraldragon5483
      @astraldragon5483 7 років тому +3

      Fry Wolf no evidence provided for "a job you will *enjoy* *but also be good at* (your revision attempt to get people to obey "market" demand and become mentally ill wage slaves for the economic model that causes a mental health crisis, you dont want people in jobs they enjoy, you want them at max efficiency despite trying to include "enjoy" in your claim) go ahead and prove that a majority of people "enjoy" jobs that they got just for "being good" or "efficiency and demand", psychological science doesn't care about economic opinions or "what you're good at", most people are psychotically depressed as a for example: accountant, whether they are "good at it" or not, the brain wants what it wants, and the human brain literally doesn't give a shit what a "market" or "economy" wants, it has biologically motivated intense personal interests/desires that do not bend for economic opinions or demands, and for people who give up their personal aspirations just to get jobs they hate but are "good at", a lifetime of depression is the inevitable result.
      try the "just go for what you're good at" argument in south Korea where instead of going for jobs they wanted, people epitomize the very concept of getting jobs they hate, just to make as much money as possible, and now they have the highest suicide rate ;D while most working adults in other countries already suffer from mental health issues, most commonly depression, from hating their boring shitty jobs that they got.
      also, what does "something you're good at" even mean? you're not "good at" anything when you're born, the entire point of learning is to become good at things.

    • @astraldragon5483
      @astraldragon5483 7 років тому +7

      Med School Insiders "be realistic regarding your abilities" is not an argument, it's a childishly vague complaint with no logic or evidence backing whatever point it's trying to make.
      scientific fact: you have no "abilities" when you are born, the entire point of learning is to obtain abilities, and in the ideal situation, obtaining abilities you actually want.
      If people already start out with "abilities" then why bother having an educational system, or learning resources/tutorials/books/etc at all? ;D
      you literally broke your own logic in this video. you said "if it's a job that drains you and makes you want to escape then it may not be a good fit for you" but your entire video before and after is about giving up passions/personal aspirations and just basically submitting to the suicidal demands of the economy and just get a job you will be "good" at.
      plus, you just broke your own logic by agreeing with someone talking about "be realistic about your abilities" which implies people should also ironically give up the discipline/work process you were talking about, because why work towards obtaining something if it's not already magically part of your "abilities"? ;D

    • @icarus6492
      @icarus6492 7 років тому +4

      Astral Dragon i think what he means is "capabilities". of course you can always learn new abilities. but will you be capable of doing everything that you are able to do? this is where we have to be realistic and admit there are somethings we cannot do. it's not a childish complaint. let me share my story.
      i'm a third year med student. i love photography. i love playing music and performing. i love to write a fantasy novel. i love to garden. i love to travel. i love to learn about gadgets and apps. i love to study about my religion. so many things i love and, not trying to be boastful, but i'm pretty good at most of it. But with so many interests, i only have such little time to do all of this as a carreer. i have to be realistic and arrange my priorities well.

    I followed my passion and don't regret it so far, but I also think that my understanding of passion is a bit different.
    The way described in this video, passion seems to be just another word for motivation.
    However when I'm passionate about something it's me seeing value in what I do.
    I'm currently learning visual scripting (yes, I'm actually an artist) and it's a real chore sometimes to actually make things work.
    But I'm constantly reminding myself that what I do is exactly what I want to to -> the task I am performing right now is developing me, my skills. I am in the process of creating something people can lay their hands on.

    • @haibanechan2293
      @haibanechan2293 7 років тому +6

      I also felt the video geared more towards motivation than passion.
      To me passion seems similiar to 'having a strong interest' in something and a strong interest can give you the motivation to go through the tough process of learning.
      I heard this quote somewhere 'Choose a subject that you feel is worth suffering for' (or something like that) so is the thing you're doing worth the struggles and pain throughout the process?
      If yes, that's passion in my opinion. :D
      I don't know, maybe I'm rambling. :)

    • @strategen9124
      @strategen9124 7 років тому +1

      Bananenbauer123 what meaning do you think visual scripting has?

    • @raapyna8544
      @raapyna8544 7 років тому +4

      Haibane Chan I think this is a very good realisation. I've been questioning myself on thinking about applying to study psychology, because art and math have been a lot easier for me in the past. But I think psychology is most worth the struggle, and I realize that math and art would make me suffer in the process as well at some point.
      I've done the thing in scout leading; I don't always like it or feel motivated, but I know that what I do matters and its importance to me is bigger than my frustration. And as I've gained more experience, it has become easier and more enjoyable. (really, I'm not a natural with kids, but I'm learning my way to work with them, and it looks like the struggle is paying off.)
      For some reason however I've made a difference between that and what "following my passion" in the work world should mean. I understand now that that was a mistake and they are the same thing.

    You will probably never read this but I can't understand how everyone is agreeing with this video. I don't think I share your perspective. I'm a professional musician, my entire life consisted of people telling me I wasnt going to be able to find a job, I should give up, I wont be able to afford my american dream with 2.5 kids, etc. I just kept at it through two degrees and was able to support myself by teaching and playing afterwards. You literally can do whatever you want if you decide you're going to make it work. I would 100% stand behind Confucious's quote. I feel like your definition of passion is my definition of leisure activity.
    I suppose this sort of message is okay to give to aimless kids or young adults that haven't learned a skill by the time they exit primary education, but people that want it bad enough should go for it.

    • @bassspace8892
      @bassspace8892 7 років тому +12

      Oh hey, you saw it. I wasn't sure if you'd be actively checking comments after the first week. I can absolutely agree with your point, "it's important to understand that you may love medicine, have passion for helping others, but that isn't what will get you to your destination." I dated a girl in college that had exceptional grades in Biochem/Pre-med to start out, but very quickly lost the motivation to continue once she started hitting those more time-intensive requirements in preparing for med school.
      I consider myself extremely lucky in that my first instinct is to be skeptical of most claims off the bat; that's what led me to pushing away the negativity surrounding me in my youth and doing what I knew felt good. I'm not going to pretend that the same level to mental energy and fortitude for a musician is on par with a member of the medical profession, but even in my field you need to practice 5-8 hours a day sometimes just to keep up with your peers. The difference is that I did learn to love that process/grind so much so that now I even get a sort of 'runner's high' from it. Thanks for the reply, well made video I think I may have just had a semantic disagreement with some of it!

      @@sxpreme-2960 I absolutely agree with you. The reason why she succeeded as a musician isn't just because "you can do anything, if only you tried hard enough". It is not about "enough" efforts. Imagine somebody is a tonedeaf. You're absolutely right. My passion for years has only grown, but my inattentive ADD is what's caused me to actually hate the process. I always study and read about my craft any chance I get, but actually trying to focus on something, whether I think about it everyday or not, has caused a deep hatred of the process that sunk me into a years long depression. At this point I want to give up, to quit caring, but my passion refuses to let me do so. I don't have health insurance and can't afford treatment and even when I could, I was prescribed only medications that made me suicidal. Like I said, you are absolutely right about this, but the knowledge alone isn't enough in my case. I don't know what to do, or how to apply what you've said. I can't get help from anyone and feel like I'm out of options...

Though it's true to need to have the burning desire, you must have the discipline to apply yourself each day and not just make excuses of why you didn't archive your work today. I've heard this debate many times… I'd love to say you're right but nobody works toward something and completely sticks with it unless they are into it… For example over 10 years ago I lost 120 pounds… If I had found a diet that worked for me and exercise that works for me… I wouldn't have done it… I certainly wanted it badly but I needed to truly connect with the subject matter of the diet… … For years I tried to forget about loving something and just going for what made money. I tried a lot of passions career wise… But early on several on the nice conservative things that would simply just make money because that's what I was told… Go to something that makes money… You're going to hate your job anyway… So that's what I did… I couldn't live with myself so I returned to school… Became a psychologist… And then a career counselor and completely love my job... I continue doing career counseling for many years while at the same time expanding the depth and breath of my career into other areas… What you were talking about is way more complicated… people can indeed follow their passion but with some level of planning… You can't just dream of being Leonardo Divinci and just do it you have to be more planned around what you want....
    While I certainly agree with you… On many levels I say it takes basic passion for work or the task at hand… Like I said I would never have lost over 100 pounds without truly having the "desire" which was fueled by a passion to not be fat.
    And career counseling/consulting we take a much more consult of approach then just going for something you like. We take your interests, passions, skills, and experiences and create a holistic picture of something that might work as a career. I never worked with someone who liked basketball and advise them to be in the NBA… We would help someone take a passion and create a level of realistic expectation out of it… For example let's say you happen to like woodworking but ultimately after talking more with you it's specifically becomes apparent you enjoy working with your hands… As a responsible career counselor there are about 100 directions you could go into and explore if you like working with your hands… You don't need to make furniture. While I agree with your point you are making things very simplistic. In the career counseling world we keep it less simplistic than that… We are very focused on the reality of what people can and will do but are very focused on understanding their underlying passions.
    These are terribly important in the career counseling process and formed the basis for driving The career counseling process… Since you're into process you should learn something more about it career counseling is about looking at everything you've got and picking something that reasonably makes sense. It's really something everyone should be forced to do the minute they get to college… reasonable high school career planning is generally unsuccessful because people are generally too young to make a rational reasonable choice when they are 15.

    10 years ago I was passionate about the same things, surfing, traveling, climbing, skydiving, helping people with my knowledge. In 12 years (when I'm 40) I'm pretty sure they will still be my passions and main interests. Even if I'm raising a family it will evolve around the outdoors and learning about life that way. The confusing part is how to make money consistently around these interests and the balance of using my time to make money working a normal job, and advancing skills within my interests.

    I absolutely agree with you!
    My problem in studying for the bench exam is that the amount of material I'm supposed to learn in criminal, civil and administrative law is so overwhelmingly large that I can't seem to find any intermediate step that could be called a victory for the day or the week.
    This leads me to being able only to see the end goal, which is months and months away in the future, and destroys my motivation. Anyone feeling the same?

    Once you become good at something, that thing becomes your passion.
    For example, i am a programmer, i struggled a lot during the early days of learning all programming grammar, syntax, i wasn't passionate about just sitting on a computer and typing code.
    But, as i practiced, i became better and better at it, to the point, where i am sufficiently good at programming, and i enjoy coding. Now, i can say i am passionate about coding, because i am good at it.
    So, just like that, once you become good at something, be it anything, you will be passionate about it.

    I really liked the point about how reality hits: there's only so many NBA places. I often volunteer at an Old Folks' Home near my place and chat with the elderly, many of which have had goals and have integrated habits that are very similar to that of the successful. Yet, they cannot afford to sustain themselves, or things just don't work out. This has really opened my eyes, and tells me that even if I try my hardest, things may very possibly still not work out, but you still have to try your damn hardest, and fall in love with the process. Only then will we be content.

    Thank you so much for this video. This video is the best video that I watched in my whole life. Believe me, I have over a thousand "liked" UA-cam videos and am 22 years old which implies how much videos I must have watched.
    IRONICALLY, I think I suffered a lot from the pressure that I have to follow my passion! It always seemed like the way, the way to make me happy. So I constantly found myself asking myself "Am I following my passion?"
    I think this is funny and sad at the same time. Withiut asking this question, I should have asked "Am I enjoying the process? How can I enjoy the process?" since our life and results are the addition of our every moment in our everyday lives, just as you said.
    Once again, thanks for the wise.. wise sayings. I was so lost since I was in highschool but it is like I found the answer. I was lost because I did not know what a "success" is. I thought money and fame means happiness, but when I saw the real people this was not the case. So many rich and famous people are miserable. So I questioned "What is a successful life...?" I thought it is doing what you want aka following your passion. This wasnt the case in reality either because as you said, passions grow and fade overtime, which I experienced so many times. For example, I love singing so much that I sometimes sing for more than 8 hours a day, but some days I am just not singing at all!
    However, thr notion that I had to follow my passion always triggered a guilty feeling inside me, asking "If you love singing that much, why don't you go for it? Why are you studying Biotechnology? I think you will regret in the future."
    I think I repeated some of my points.. but it is that much that you impressed and enlightened me and gave me the answer I was looking for.. "Do not follow your passion, but enjoy the Process..."
    I especially liked the quote of the champion boxer.

    I'm REALLY trying to figure myself out; how to be more productive, disciplined, figure out what I enjoy and want to pursue, figure out methods that work for me, etc.
    So I end up watching videos like this, even more recent ones, and I constantly hear, "Do/think this and don't do/think that". Great. Thanks. I understand WHY I need to change things, hence my being here in the first place, but I just really don't have a clue HOW to change things.
    The advice is always broad and general from a practical sense and I just can't work with that at all.
    It's been super frustrating and problematic for some time now. Hopefully I'll get there eventually.

    The content and timing of this video were excellent for me! I have two big exams in late October spanning basically everything we've learnt in physiology, anatomy and histology from december until right before the exams. My motivation has been very unstable the last 6 months, and now with summer holidays and also having to work to sustain myself economically, I was starting to see how I'd fail to put in the required effort to pass. After having watched this and some of your other videos I believe I can enjoy catching up this summer, and have more than adequate time to do so.

    Loving the process is something I've noticed lately. I love doing art, but sometimes I'm only motivated by the end result so it's hard to motivate me. I've recently taken up roller skating- and I love the process! Sure, it feels good as I get better, but I enjoy learning and the process of doing it, not just the results!

    For certain things, not having an end goal is probably the best way to look at it. About eight months ago I started to take my health and fitness more seriously and I've been exercising consistently and controlling my diet a lot better than I had been. I have a short term goal of losing five to ten more pounds to try to flatten out my stomach but I consider this a permanent lifestyle change, no end point, just being better than I was for the rest of my life.

I loved doing this certain thing since I was a young child, both my brother and I. now, finishing college, I saw a gap in a market about my passion. a viable market where the potential business stands to make tens of millions at the end of the first business year. I also have the talent in this passion as iv'e been do I t consistently since i was a kid. following your passion as a career choice isn't always a bad idea if you put in the work.

    Discipline is often fuelled by anger and frustration. Knowing what you don’t want and which experiences you wish to avoid (when properly channeled) fuels progress (even more so than “chasing your dreams”). I’m not saying you should always be frustrated, but lofty ideals and big-talk is not enough to drive you through the bullshit that stands between you and what you want. Sometimes the situations that cause anger, frustration and humiliation are glaring signals about what we need to change in our lives. I would wager that many people who appear committed to the process have these feelings and their higher ideals in alignment.

Yet, if anyone asks me I deny liking it all. I like it in the small parts, but as a whole it's too big. like suddenly trying to run a marathon.
