Don't bring yourself down! Maybe you need more resources and support. Oftentimes we forget the situational context a person is in. They possibly are from a low income family and are under constant strain and cannot put as much time into school because they are so exhausted. I am also by no means saying Med School Insiders did not work extremely hard, but I think that looking at your social determinants of health is important.

Last two months of Trig/Algebra, saw an F on my grade and constantly failing tests, quickly realized I had been doing little to no homework in the class and thus lacked any practice at all for each test that followed. Fixed it with beginning to schedule my days, and managed to bring my grade to a C (though barely passed the finals) before the semester closed. And thus, wiggled my way to pass the first semester of the class.

I have Crohn’s disease and had chronic flare ups from 2nd grade-7th grade, I was malnourished and throwing up every night, and had horrible diarrhea. My mom blamed random shit like my ADHD medicine, picky eating and staying up too late so it took super long to even get tested. I was iron deficient and my doctor thought I had an eating disorder. My dad got to the point where he would make me go to school even when I was sick and would tell me to wake up every night to throw up so I wouldn’t accidentally throw up on the carpet. It was so bad, I literally can’t remember anything except my disease for most of my childhood. When I wasn’t getting sick, I was being force fed food because my parents were just doing their best to help me not die from malnutrition. Luckily I got diagnosed in 7th grade and I have been doing great since then! I’m sharing this story because I think Crohn’s disease is very overlooked by a lot of people, there is a lot of misinformation in the world, and it usually goes undiagnosed for a very long time.

Only have a couple of drinks but during the break like Christmas break ill go out more because I've earned it but I agree with you on the notion of it's not healthy to drink at every occasion but I also would follow up with not having alc at home. Plenty of people don't go out but drink at home everyday which is just as toxic.

Interesting video! I used to study biomedical science but after a year I switched majors and now I'm doing mathematics. There could not be a bigger difference in the studying techniques I used! While "just studying" (reading, rewriting, flashcards etc.) was what I mainly did in Biomed, Maths FORCES me to think actively as we have weekly assignments neccessary for being allowed to the final exam. I personally think career paths such as medicine require a lot more discipline, while others like maths require more focus and interest (Not offending). I have deepest respect for anyone with a degree in the medical field

The first mistake is something that happened to me as well. After getting into an accident where I injured my neck and spine, I tried to finish my semester despite having missed too weeks of school and not being able to move my neck or back. The extreme stress of trying to catch up, compete on a curve with healthy people on exams, read at all without being able to move my neck down and needing to dictate my assignments to friends (and also the NSAIDs) caused me to develop chronic gastritis.

Here we have medical entrance examination straight after high school and i have worked very hard towards it in starting of 12th grade I work so hard pulling all nighters and stuff giving coaching exams on Sunday then school exams of Monday every week although I was happy doing hard work my health started to detoriate that for 3 months I had chronic cough that I was not nebulizer, steroids and what not after not learning my lesson I had severe cluster headaches then tenosynovitis and now I have herniated cervical disc. My exams are in 1 month but now I know although Med is my passion and I am willing to do anything for it, I have to take care of myself and learn from my mistakes. In 6th form I spent most of the year trying to hand some of my homeworks in on time, and only seriously started studying days before the exam. I got decent grades, but I would have preferred to study all year. The problem with that was that as soon as I started to invest my time in studying, I got worse at getting my homework done. Since homework was more urgent, I decided that the only thing to do was focus on doing my homework, and wait until days before the exam to study.
How we were expected to study and keep on top of homework at the same time was beyond me.
I pulled a lot of all nighters too, it made me tired, but at least I got my homework done.

our dean one said that studying hard and smart or just trying hard will not get you a brain cancer but instead a immunocompromised diseases, or in my case a psychological disorder or just passing out in the hall way for not sleeping in 60 hours because of that damn experimental thesis and final exams all at once.

The tone still seems to be too harshly critical of your former, younger and less experienced self. Congratulate yourself on who you've become. Be proud of the achievement. Imagine the wisdom the next 20 years will bring. Perhaps you will continue to pursue plastics and reconstructive but there's a big price to pay for the perfection required for optimal results. Though it's often said that meta-analysis is to analysis as metaphysics is to physics, I certainly agree with your statements regarding the toxicity of ethanol.

I used to work 35 hours at a restaurant pulling 10 credits (Math and Computer Science), plus commuting to school 3 hrs 4 days a week, on top of that cooking and not resting well got me Hypothyroidism. I can relate you have to take it slow and be smarter with school, instead of studying harder. I am still in school but doing better by taking it slow on the stress and physical work.

Can you make a video about medical school with a chronic illness and/or disability? I love your videos and advice! I am a rising fourth-year undergrad, and a few months ago, I finally found out that I have narcolepsy. I would really appreciate some insight regarding available accommodations, advice, and experiences.

, I do most of the good things you said, but there’s always room for improvement. Idk about others but when I don’t sleep well I am miserable the following day. I do need to work on scheduling my days better cause I do tend to pull all nighters and sometimes miss gym workouts, or just get really stressed. But I’ve come a long way with being more efficient 😃👍🏻

The worst thing I have done in High School (in Poland you go form high school to university) was neglecting school dutis. For me only final exam (matura) counted and only 2 or 3 exams. So I studied only biology and chemistry. I got into medschool but the las year was so hard for me... probably harder than first year of medschool. The problem was that I wasn't used to studying that much. I had no techniques, it was hard to focus and only during the first year of medicine I learnt how to learn. I know now it would have been much easier if I new how to study going into medicine.

The bit about alcohol has fourth and probably more insidious negative outcome - developing alcoholism. Which can start from "social drinking" or "stress relief." There's a certain point where it will be a problem, and it's important to be mindful of that.
I do believe the first red flag on the road to alcoholism is not being constantly blackout drunk or hungover (it's just the most obvious red flag)... but the moment your drinking to cope with stress becomes a pattern. And given family history, it's enough to make me a teetotaler, in all honesty.

Nicholas Garcia you are, just like me, worrisome and perfectionist. Tbh i couldnt help it even after 4 years, and i got into depression like three times during that time period. Last time, 2 months back, i told my psychiatrist about that while prescribing me antidepressants, he told me while they are in action, try to let go of small stuff, and worry less but do not go to the extreme where you dont care. Care but without worry you can say xD. This idea seems sooo easy when you are on antidepressants. But when i start tapering it down and stop using it. My precious self comes back again. I would recommend you to go and see your doc so you can work that out. Good luck

@@redache467 omg im 17 and when i was in these dual credit courses i was stressing mad crzy over these english assignments cause I needed and wanted an A grade. I passed both of my classes in public health and english 101, but I did pull an all nighter trying to make it all perfect. I ususally focus on one class more than the other and idk how to balance it all so tis all equal... I felt depresed more this summer as i joined summer school at my local college. I just feel like since COVID nothing matters to me anymore, but before that, I felt like nothing mattered and I didn't care much about my grade and it did drop some and I lost motivation.. I was just tired.. A few times students said I looked sad, my mom as well, but I didnt feel sad... It's strange.. I just want to avoid these unhealthy habits and strive to be healthy and successful than what I've been lately.

Be a perfectionist, but take recovery just as serious. I try to take an entire day off each week, I take outside breaks, I don’t work at night, exercise and meditate. these all help me operate in intense perfectionism and then easily come back to real life

If you want to get admission in top medical university, I thought UCAT tutoring is one of the best solutions. They offered me the question banks that contain hundreds of example questions from all five subtests. Use these to familiarise yourself with the type of questions you will see in your live UCAT exam.
