Why Patience is Power | Priceless Benefits of Being Patient

  • Not only is impatience unpleasant, but it’s also pointless. Impatience is the unwillingness to live life at the pace it actually happens; we wish for the universe to bend to our will. We want things now. We want things to change in an instant. But in reality, external circumstances are not up to us: no matter how much we wish that to be the case. Patience, the opposite virtue, is based on the acceptance of what is.

When the plane is delayed, when my work doesn't immediately bear fruit, when I'm stuck in traffic late for a meeting, I become aware of the knot growing in my gut and release that rising tension by taking a deep breath and laughing at my own expectation that the world should bend to my convenience ("It figures. Haha!"). Especially when I remember that so many others have been also waiting for opportunities I received long ago. I count my blessings and say to myself, "Everything is exactly the way it's supposed to be. It can't be otherwise." I also recognize this is the benefit of age and having achieved half of my goals. I can AFFORD to be more patient than a young person.

I took an art class at a community college several years ago. There was one student from whom I learned so much. We would both stay after class to work on our projects. He would patiently sit with his materials until the understanding of what he would do with them came to his mind. Sometimes he would sit for hours in patient silence. His 3-D creations were always my favorite.

I used to rush to work (speed). I was always angry while doing so, cussing out other drivers as well as stop lights...these things thwarted me from getting to work, doncha know? I'd be stressed and in a bad mood when I got to work, thinking the worse of co workers, and continuing the impatience. Needless to say, I wasn't happy.
Then I started practicing mindfulness and decided to drive that way. Wow, what a difference! I go no more than a couple miles above the speed limit, stop lights are now opportunities to breathe...and what I found is I got to work in about the same amount of time, but no stress, no anger.
I'm still working on being more patient, but the experiences I've had with it show me that while it can be difficult cultivating this, the effort really does pay off.

Often our understanding of slumps in life are rooted in our desire to maintain or improve our status. For those who are trying to maintain an image for their audience it's diffcult to be patient. Stop competing with yourself for recognition in the society. The people around you whom you wish to prove your worth to don't actually matter as much as you think. Those who really care about you want your time and indulgence not your status.

When I was a teenager at a boarding school of the Salesians in Portugal, every morning we had this gathering with some reading and chanting from a little book.
In that book there was a story like this of Buda. An impatient man was told to watch the bottom of a well right after the wise man have collected a bucket of water. "I see nothing!", says the impatient man. "Now wait. Watch again.", says the wise man; "Now I can see myself mirrored in the water!".
I keep this story with me since I was 10.

Benefit #4 is the most difficult to me, as an ADHD guy. ADHDs have less basal dopamine than normal, so we tend to crave instant gratification more than normal (that's why we crave novelty, and end up with dozens of unfinished projects). If the desired outcome is too far, we quit.
At the same time, the video has a solution at 8:48. Focusing on the process, instead of focusing on the results. The idea is to value the small wins, being happy with "I went to the gym 3 times this week", instead of valuing the effort just when "I lost 2kg"

It's very dificult for most of us to achieve our larger goals, especially when faced with the added challenge of a disorder like ADHD. We all are faced with our own unique challenges; some big and some small, however it's the actions we take in spite of what limits us that define us most and gets us to where we desire to be.
From what you said in your comment, I feel you have the right mindset and are on track to remaining focused on achieving the things that matter most to you.

This video is so beautifully thought out. I’m guessing your patience helped your creativity show in this video. You know,, I was starting to think something was wrong with me because everyone around me is so impatient. Meanwhile I don’t get frustrated for things I can’t control. This just made me feel better about myself especially, living in New York City.

"The fruits of patience is sweet" been hearing this all my life. I wish I had more patience. There is no point in me being impatient right from the start and then afterwards saying I am going to be patient when that is the only solution.

Back in 1988, I took my little niece to Expo 88, in Brisbane. She missed out on watching the high divers jump 100 metres into a pool. So she asked if we could sit and wait for the next show, that was two hours away. But I didn't want to disappoint her so I agreed. About 10 minutes before the show started she had to go to the toilet. I asked the person behind us to hold our spot, we got in with maybe 1 minute to spare. This lesson on patience came from a little 8 year old girl.

Thank you Handsome Dutchman for this essay on patience. Because of you and another teacher, Michael Mirdad, my troublesome THREE year conflict with a neighbor has ended.
After listening and practicing these lessons learned, I came to FINALLY realize that I WAS THE PROBLEM!!
We humans sure put ourselves through a lot of suffering when Ego leads us. At 76 years on Earth I feel like, at long last, I am now a mature Grown Up.
WHEW! Patience has indeed paid great dividends...and it saves ENERGY too, a blessing at my age.
Thank you from my whole heart.

*Fear, The Greatest Hinderance To Success*
Fear is the primary reason people fail, or even don’t start something in the first place. But living your life in fear will only cause disappointment in the long run. After all, “we miss 100% of the shots we don’t take,” so don’t let fear stop you from taking your shot.

Maybe the hardest seasons of life teach you a different version of happiness . Maybe in those seasons , the things you live for , the things you value most , seem so small in comparison to what you were filling your soul with in the past , seem so quiet in contrast . Maybe it is within those moments that your eyes are opened , that you learn how to find joy , and peace , and safety in that which you didn't even notice before .
Maybe in the seasons of life where your heart aches , or loss has built a home within you , happiness changes . Maybe it becomes your morning cup of coffee sitting and drinking it as the sun rises and the world wakes up around you . Maybe happiness becomes the way the sky looks at your favorite time of night , the way the moon fills the air with an energy you can feel in your bones when you really sit with yourself and let your solitude wash over you . Maybe in the messiest moments of life , happiness is your mother's voice . Maybe it is the beauty you feel when you see your friends ' faces , when you hug them for twenty minutes straight , when you sit with them in silence and feel understood , and seen , and held , in all that you are .
Maybe in the most complicated moments happiness simplifies in a deeply profound way . Maybe it exists in the songs you listen to and the way your pen scratches across your journal in the morning . Maybe it exists in the quiet , in the moments where you fully connect with yourself and you love yourself and you are kind to yourself in all that is unvarnished and unanswered in your life .
Maybe the hardest seasons of your journey teach you that happiness is small . That it exists in the stillness , that it echoes through you in the most nameless moments . And maybe the hardest seasons of life teach you that those moments aren't small at all . That those fleeting experiences , that those simple encounters , have always been saving you , have always been the things that truly mattered .
Existence wants you to be You

Note to self: the hard part is knowing whether things are actually out of our control, or whether we're just discouraging ourselves out of learned helplessness. Sometimes rushing may hurt, but sometimes it may also help us reach success, and it's not always easy to tell which applies to us. (Of course, when we are truly unable to change our circumstances, then there's nothing to do except wait.)
Also, I'm not sure if I agree that benefit #4 demonstrates the value of focusing on process over results. Sometimes going through the process really sucks, and the only reason we persevere through them is because we expect to be rewarded by results at the end. If anything, in those situations we should focus *more* on results (while acknowledging that they may only appear much later).
As usual, it is incredibly difficult to give general life advice because life is complicated
