The Chantels performing at the Savannah Center in The Villages FL Jan 23, 2014 during Rocky & The Rollers "Lady Legends of Rock-n-Roll" show - singing their hit record from 1958 "Maybe".
I am old school all the way she sounds very good she's been with the group of over 20 years, but no one could ever replace Arlene. Just living in the past sometimes it's hard to step away. These ladies would mop the floor with today's Talent.
The lead singer since 1995 is Noemi "Ami" Ortiz;the other three ladies are original group members since 1957;Lois Harris Powell,Sonia Goring Wilson and Renee Minus White;Jackie Landry Jackson passed away from breast cancer in 1997 and Arlene Smith, who left the group in 1959,prior to "Look In My Eyes", is retired and living in the Bronx,NY.
From #BABYBOOMER ga-ga talk facebook . The Chantels sing so many wonderful songs and continue to perform live all over the country. For more CHANTELS MUSIC and memories *click* here the image photo.
Absolutely agree 💯. Like the Bobbetts who preceded them, the Chantels was one of the greatest girl groups ever. They should be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
+Elizabeth Cahill Ami Ortiz is more than just a stand-in, and nobody's trying to fool anyone. Ms. Ortiz has been with the Chantels for twenty years now, and it is well known that Arlene Smith has not officially been with the original Chantels since 1970.
Arlene Smith did make one appearance with the Chantels in 1999 on the PBS "Doo Wop 50 Show". The group performed this tune to perfection. It was the highlight of the show for me!
I have to agree with Dennis. How ridiculous and small. Unbelievable that you would go out of your way to trash such a talented woman who gave the best years of her life to keep this music alive for decades. So ignorant. And mean.
Haunting, beautiful, song. Remember it well! Hard to not want to live in the past!

Truer words were never spoken, These Ladies Can sing, It's really hard not to step back into the past they were the best of times!!!
Correction, there is no "today's talent" All half naked gyrations and pyrotechnics to disguise the LACK of talent!
Right on. 👍
Happens every time. Song goes past my ears to my heart.
They still got it!!! Lemme rephrase that..... Never lost it
Best slow dance ever. Dancing slow and close many years ago.
Just simply beautiful
They're still alive? I love this song!

Arlene Smith became a public school music teacher in The Bronx not far away from where I teach.
Thank you
