I live in Central Texas myself... This is the time you want to get weeds under control. Get a good quality spreader and apply 0-0-7 pre-emergents. Then water it in with a Bermuda grass friendly weed killer, like Spectracide Orange label.
Fall and on into Winter is weed control season, and that's where your focus should be, you can also take the time to level your lawn at this time as well. Don't think of Ferts until early Spring, I spread Ferts and Iron right around March, then once again in early June. Watering is important, especially between the rain drops, at least twice a week.
Insecticides, I prefer not use them unless there's a problem that vinegar and dish washing liquid can't handle. Remember that the chemicals we use will get consumed by birds and other wildlife we want to keep around, so its wise to learn about the beneficial insects in your yard like spiders and dragon fly's which are a lawn and gardens best friend. Killing off beneficial insects can make the problem worse over time. There are all kinds of videos that teach you how to use these insects for your benefit, like My Wild Backyard, and The Wildlife Brothers channels.

Hi Sir! I just found your videos a few days ago and I'm so grateful for your content. I'm learning a lot. I live in central FL and the temperature will be averaging around 70º+ I know it's not spring yet but should I put the Bermuda Seed down now? I have an annual ryegrass seed on the lawn at the moment, and once spring rolls around it will be dyeing off. I'm still in the first year of owning my home, and starting lawn care.

BermudaGrass grass seed germinate in 80 plus degrees weather. It will have issues doing that now and with the RYE grass.

I've been working on my test patch, this is what I recommend instead of trying to tackle the entire yard on your property. I sectioned off a 100x100ft area and have been experimenting over the past two years to figure how to combat weeds, prep the soil, and to experiment with seed vs. plugs. Scotts seed could not last through the Texas summer heat, by mid June it was burned up, even with weekly watering, the established common Bermuda however thrived, so the plug method is the way to go. I scooped up shovel full of sod and transplanted it, and it took off, so I started plugging right after that and now the stolens are reaching out looking for the party.
I just put down 007 the first week in October. Had to use grass/weed killer to take out the Dalles and Crab grass, did this carefully with a spot sprayer to great effect. I even got my garden shovel and pulled up all the stubborn weeds and root balls, and raked out all the dead weeds, and I get out in my yard and I've been pulling up any new weeds as soon as they pop up and I bag them into a trash bag. Its easier to get the baby weeds than the established weeds. Get rid of all the weeds first, then put down your 007 or whatever pre emergent you use. The end result is a clear patch of dirt and a clear path for the Bermuda plugs to take over. I am also leveling with peat and soil mix as I go, I take my time and work slow, come next Spring the Bermuda plugs are going to pop off with stolens and rhizomes.
It's taken me 3 years to get to this point, and its been a long learning process. If I could do it over again I would advise this...
    1. Get your weeds under control first!
    2. Level your patch of dirt, make sure the ground is level so when you mow you don't scalp the lawn.
    3. Seed is a waste of money, use transplant plugs or sod.
    4. Get a good spreader and apply per-emergents & ferts, Fall, Spring Summer.
    5. Water in between the raindrops, at least twice a week minimum.
    6. Mind your mower blade height and use a bag, and compost your clippings.
    7. And most importantly, spend time with your grass and get out there and pull up any weeds you see, do not depend on chemicals or let nature take its course, get out there and spend some time with your grass and help it combat the weeds by pulling up any new unwanted invasive sprouts!
Hope this helps other novices out there.

I go early. I apply based on dates not soil temps. Timing is great but most miss the winter and end up with weeds my theory is apply sooner than later.

Which is the better plan, Michael? I want to overseed my cool season grass to fix some bare spots. Should I put the seed down, let it get established then put down pre-emergent (avoiding those areas) or would it be better to wait until early Spring to put the new seed down?

    • @BYDonBermudaGrassCentral
      @BYDonBermudaGrassCentral  Рік тому +2

Cool season I’d seed now and again in the spring. You’ll have to research 🧐 this but there are post emergents made for treat weed on cool season lawn with new seeding and if I’m not mistaken Scoots has a start fertilizer that has no pre emergent but kill weeds also but it not a weed and feed type application 🤷🏾‍♂️.

Question? Do we weed and feed now for Kentucky 33 grass? Want to keep up the fight against crabgrass and Dallas grass and other weeds and grasses.
