Average home owner that’s why we watch you keep it local 👍🏿
It's finally sinking in that there is alot of science involved in keeping your lawn looking mint...damnit
Mine was scalped with a bagged mower this afternoon.
We needed this video!! BYD you dropped this right on time
Thanks Juice 🧃
Found my favorite channel!
Great content keep doing what you do
Will be scalping as well! 🌱
Yes sirrrrrrr!!!!!!! Scalping as well down here in Houston
BYD, you da man!
Great video especially scalping and the sun nutren making our grass get greener because the lawn is shorter !
Great content!!
I just moved to a house with Bermuda grass lawn (in Atlanta area), so I’m excited to be following along this year!
Great video BYD. Scalping is definitely a chore. You make it look easy. 😎
Thanks Ron 👍🏾
Great video
Just scalped my front yard for the first time this past weekend. I'll do the back this weekend
Happy Birthday BYD. I think that for your 50th birthday you should get a new Wright stand on mower or maybe a Scag Cheetah!! You deserve it; keep up the great work. I pre scalped my yard in the fall down to 1 inch. Will take it down to 1/2 inch in another few weeks. Our Texas grass took a beating with the storm; want it to recover a bit and start growing.
I`m in SC and I will scalp soon and then hit it with a SunJoe dethatcher. I`m having my drainage ditch piped in and will sod that area with some Tif Tuf.
Thanks for all the videos!
Scalp coming THIS Saturday!
Brother scalped my yard today and I hurt in place I haven’t felt in a long time ha ha!!!
Now you know why I had two mowers and BYD jr there, lol 😂
Christian Brothers on the rocks ;)

Good to hear your support for Ron. I always mention you both on his comments. I have combined the things that you both share. I use the Sunniland for fertilizers, but I have also used the Carbon Pro-G & Carbon Pro-G. I noticed that I have early green-up and currently no weeds. I am planning to scalp as soon as the yard dries out a little more.
When, How and Why! Great video, BYD! I'll definitely bring it down. 😂 I heard that old man grunt! I know all too well about that! 😂
Scalping this season every year
Great info,I’m in McDonough ga
Thanks 🙏🏾 for watching
Yes!!! It’s BYD time!!!
hells yeah .... byd is the BOSS
Thanks man keep the videos coming an recommendation a excellent pre emergent one you recommend

Pre-Scalping now, gotta get that dead 3" grass down to 2 inches so i dont have a huge mess and more work come actual scalp time lol. Ive been using the greenworks and it works great. Oh and its a HUGE mess but ive been so anxious to get in the yard i dont mind doing it lol.
Another good vid BYD! Just to add to the conversation, I normally buy extra air filters before scalping because the dust and dormant grass packs my filter quickly. It clogged up my carb too so I took the carb apart and cleaned it. Thanks for these tips! Love the vids. :)
That’s a good idea 💡
This is something I need to know. I was thinking it Should be cut low in April so the sun can hit it better. To green up fast . Thank you
Scalping this year down to the dirt. Aeration as well. Well worth the hassle. I scalp every year. Keep up the great work BYD.
Yeah I’ll be aerating as well 👍🏾
I've got a couple old Briggs flathead baggers. Old engines that still run near perfect. With a sharpened blade, these things will chug through thick grass without any complaints
So had to find a reason to put me to work Sunday? Lol
I'm wondering about scalping vs burning now? Guess maybe I'll wait for both videos to drop to decide.
Great info thanks! I need to get ready for my scalp and may do the pre scalp due to lawn height. Bought my house in Dec and the HOC was pretty high when the grass went dormant. Unfortunately no fall pre emergent so dealing with winter weeds and poa. Sprayed with image two weeks ago and got my first app of pre emergent down so think I am on track with my front bermuda.
Same boat I feel you
Yea man. I started scalping my yard in December. It's about 1 inch. I can't talk my customers into scalping theirs though.
Thank you.
You’re welcome 😇
Rise Up!
Well BYD since I went into business I just pre-scalp the customers I have but my Gravely zero turn lowest setting is 1.5 so that what I try to go to but then again I have 2 customers that likes their Bermuda to be 4 inches during growing season.
Moved from California to metro Atlanta, Georgia. Glad I found a local guy so I can keep up with lawn care.
Men are serious down here with their lawn care & I got to step my game up! Lol
I’m a black, 57 year old married women who takes care of my yard. I have a brand new McLane and a 3 year old Trucut. My husband wouldn’t have a clue what to do with these machines. Also, I do my own maintenance on my lawnmowers including backlapping. So, it’s just not men who like nice yard. I’m serious about my yard.
Honda HRX goes to 3/4” but like you said, you need a pretty level lawn or else you get high centered.
I cheated this year and paid a company to scalp it for me. Best money I have spent in a while!!
No shame in that 👍🏾
@@BYDonBermudaGrassCentral Lol I felt guilty at first but after watching this video I am glad I did it. Its warm in GA this week so I am putting down my pre-emergent tomorrow.
I've done it a few times too. Good idea if you use a push mower to mow your yard.
@@TRACKMKIII I’ve already put down on mine. I just started taking care of my yard about a year ago, I’m working on the weeds over the next week
Bruh I was like, oh yeh my new tif tuf has gone all spongey and not looking great. Half a 7x5 trailer load later aha
I’m an average homeowner and I have a 27” Tru cut, right tool for the job, Honda rotary is just for vacuuming up.
👍👍👍
I have an ego with a 7.5ah battery but it struggled with scalping. Guess I have to do it in several passes.
Living in West Texas (the Caprock and technically a desert) this was super helpful! Thank you! Very thorough. Crush thy neighbor made me laugh so hard 😆
BYD 2021!!
I live in south eastern Kentucky and have quite a bit of Bermuda but I also have KY bluegrass so it would be hard to scalp like this. Plus I mow with a husqvarna pzt-60 but don’t have a bagger (sure wish I did).
I’ve got a timemaster. This is my first time with a bermuda lawn
Go figure I just scalped - like in Georgetown TX, and then the following week it was in the 40s and 50s. Brrrr. Can’t wait for it to get warm and wake that grass up
I scalp every year, early March. Always have good results and faster greenup!
Which state?
@@oneweak8938 I scalp at the same time. Early March. I live in the DFW area.
Same here, NE Oklahoma. Then I apply pre-emergent.
I don't think I'll need a scalp yet. Cut all of mine low on the last cut in Sept. due to all the dallisgrass. Had to make it stand out so I could hit it hard over winter.
Y’all ain’t sharpen your blade in 9 seasons, HAHAHA!!!
Good video boss. Glad I stopped by to see how much dust and debris y’all kicked up.
As a first time homebuyer here in Oklahoma, I will be doing my first scalp soon. We have a fertilizer company that does our lawn and they already put down pre emergent back in early March. Question, do I need to do anything after I scalp? Appreciate any feedback you have
BYD i see u pre scalped u put down ur pre emergent already if not when u doing it we getting alot of rain in GA next few days thinking bout dropping mine down tomorrow.
I’ve got my popcorn ready.🍿
Me too, lol
i'm not sure this was mentioned, but scalping will allow your green to shine thru better by not having any leftover brown grass standing tall in competition.
you could say that if you keep your grass at 3 inches normally, then it would be ideal to scalp to 1". if you keep it at 2 inches, you would want to scalp at 0.5".
i keep my mower at 4", so i could get away with 1.5" , but i will scalp at 1".
i will do some controlled burning in the backyard just for funsies. lol
Good point 👍🏾
I have the Ryobi 480e riding mower with the bigger batteries and it can't scalp. So the push mower definitely isn't going to work unfortunately when cutting down to the dirt
👍
“Crush our Neighbor”..... so true 😂
I’ve driven out to the country in Alabama during spring and people set their whole front yards on fire. Pretty crazy. I think I would get arrested and a big fat fine pretty quick if I did that
lol its the easiest way to go if you can get away with it
Man I just put down my pre-emergent and my weed killer. I’ll be scalping around spring break. I have a Kobalt electric, crazy how long it takes with it, but worth it at the end
Been following your advice and my grass is an even tan right now in San Joaquin Valley of Calif. My neighbor has already started mowing weekly as our grass was mostly nut sedge, dandelion, spurge, crab grass, etc. I cut short and put 0-0-7 down on superbowl weekend. We are having a couple of days of 70 each week now but still having frost at night. After using Image in fall (November), The kids helped me rake up all the dead weeds in January. So, after my long-windedness, do you suggest using a thatch rake after it greens up? My green mower won't cut close to the dirt. Thanks, BYD, for helping me. I know my neighbors think I'm a crazy single mom! Most are retired using lawn service providers, but a few are like me but are just letting the weeds be their green lawn.
I’d have my lawn aerated instead of thatch racking it.
Wish I could afford a Greenworks 80 volt Zero-Turn. I've got a few (4) of their other 80 volt tools.
I'd let you come up and review it for your channel.
I have a lawn that twas laid down as sod back in March. I’m wondering if and when I should do the first scalping. I live western South Carolina.
I’d wait a full year
BYD!
Showcase a "Scalp/Dethacth blade for the rotary mower. That blade will get you pass the white.
Lol 😂
Hey man! Thanks for the vid. Quick question, I have an uneven lawn and have lots of longer stepping patches on my lawn. How do I fix that? I have changed blades and checked tire pressure. Will cutting higher help? Thanks
Have you looked into leveling your lawn with Sand and soil mixture?
Excellent video sir!! Do you like the electric mowers? They seem much quieter! How is their cut?? Thank you
Love mine but you’ll need to cut you lawn more often because they don’t do well in Super High grass being mowed down very low.
Do recommend scalping then leveling my yard? I need to drop some dirt to level some problematic areas in my yard! Appreciate you and all the info you pass along.
Yes,,that’s a good ideal 👍🏾
@@BYDonBermudaGrassCentral Thank you! I really enjoy your content keep up the good work brother 🙌🏽
Hello good sir, I reseeded my bermuda lawn with annual Rye seed just like you did the one year. So far we love it, as our dog hasn't destroyed it and it keeps the top soil intact during the heavy rains we get in Charlotte NC... So when do I have worry about detaching and when do you reckon i start cutting the rye grass down to ground?
I’d start working that lawn down now if you are getting higher temps, I’d bag it and mow often. I’m not a big fan of Dethatching though. Maybe in spots but not the entire lawn.
@@BYDonBermudaGrassCentral Thank you. Still a little ways to go until the temps are above freezing at night
I have only 1 bermuda lawn out of all my accts.. so I can't justify purchasing a reel mower.. baggers for commercial walkbehind mowers arent as tidy as pushmower baggers.. so I guess we'll just push mow/bag it for this scalping.. ugggh
You can scalp with a riding mower correct. Just have to bag it...do we set at the next to lowest
Yes you can scalp with a rider with a bagger also. If that mower can handle tall grass without bogging down then yes Lowest setting.
BYD what do the people in South Florida do when there Bermuda never goes dormant do we still scalp to get new growth for the season
They cut all season. Do they they scalp?, so do and some don’t.
You need to scalp well before it’s coming out of dormancy. If your grass is showing green the weeds are also germinating. Gotta get your pre-emergent down and spray with glyphosate after you scalp since you don’t want to disturb your pre-emerg barrier.
I would not Spray lawn with Glyphosate even while it’s dormant.
@@BYDonBermudaGrassCentral why not? Worked on 40 yards for 20 yrs.🤔
Good Info BYD
I will get to this some time in March. We are getting more rain in the next days in THE CLT. Would it be premature to put down fungicide because of excess rain or wait and put down with the weed and feed application?
If you see a fungus then yes or if you know your yard is know to get one. I’d only weed and feed a lawn that 40-60 green. Not a dormant lawn.
@@BYDonBermudaGrassCentral
Thank you for getting back to me.
Be safe.
See this off why I flowed him he is do knowledge about to I need to do I live in Locust Grove, GA, he actually around my area and everything he talked about had helped me soooooo freaking much is crazy not to listen.
me too Im in snellvile. bigUp BYD
I have an acre corner lot, run an exmark zero turn with the mulch kit, normally in the spring, I just start taking it down, go over several times and don’t bag anything. Some of the clippings do build up in the soil especially after a rain, so what’s a guy like me supposed to do? Pushing it with a bagger prob be too much work, should I go out and buy like a new John Deere lawn tractor with the double bagger on it, and only use it in the spring to bag. Or just keep doing what I’ve been doing,
You just need to cut more often. The grass will break down over time. I have the 36 inch with the mulch kit. I have a bagger that goes with it but I don’t want to take the kit off also 😀. Most commercial guys don’t bag also. But if you have a lot of weeds you’ll need to use post emergents. Hopes this helps 👍🏾
HI BYD! I'm in Austin, TX and want to scalp my yard. It is definitely 3 inches tall and left that way since last fall cut. The temps are still getting cool at night and there is not 40% greenness in the yard yet. Neighbors keep their grass dirt level all year but they also had lawns full of winter weeds, so their methods can't be trusted. 🤣 What should I be doing now? Advice?
Start working here down ASAP.
BYDI have a question if I have a whole lot of weed in the yard right now which is the 25th Can I put down pre merge right now do I cut before I do it
Remember pre emergent is not a weed killer but yes you can apply it to catch some of the Summer Weeds that may not have germinated. If you mow please use a bagger 👍🏾
Great video! How beneficial is it to use a lawn sweeper (pull along) and when would you use it? Thx Sir
Do you mean a dethatcher
@@BYDonBermudaGrassCentral Dethatching as I understand is very beneficial. However I was referring to a lawn sweeper. I recently purchased a Agri-fab 42 lawn sweeper and it seemed to get up way more than I expected. Also, the brushes(that can be adjusted) went through my recently sodded lawn without causing any damage.
I’m not a fan of Dethatching but if it can be done with minimal sage then yes.
If the fertilizer said do it six months what can you do between months
I’ve got some weeds I need to take care of. Should a I scalp before the I put down the weed and feed or lay it down first and scalp? Or possibly a regular cut weed and feed and scalp it a couple weeks later? Bermuda grass in North Texas.
I personally would scalp first but if the grass is not actively growing then now is not the time for weed and feed. But if it is growing with weeds I’d apply it 3 days after a cut.
@@BYDonBermudaGrassCentral sounds like a have a weekend project. Thanks!
are you going to aerate & if so when a good time
I’ll aerate once I get a good green up 🆙 but you need to get the weeds under control first.
When doing a controlled burn, does the fire affect the pre-emergent?
It shouldn’t, as the premegent is in the soil. The fire will not only scalp down to the dirt but also add carbon to the soil. Never done it but have seen neighbors do it.
Would you recommend scalping and detach same time? Which one before? After? Thanks in advance. I’m in Arlington Texas.
My personal preference is not to Dethatch BermudaGrass. Scalping is fine as long you bag clippings. Dethatching tears up stolons and takes longer to repair.
BYD, after you scalp down to 1" going into the spring APRIL-August, do you let it grow up to 3" or do you continue to cut it short at 1" all spring/summer?
Keep cutting low all season. 3 is the max but really between one and two inches. The key is you’ll have to mow more than once a week.
I’m in Northeast Georgia. My did was installed last November. Should I scalp? If so when?
Wait a year to scalp new sod, cut as normal though.
Locust,NC Just did exactly that, thank you. What’s the first granular I should put down after pre emergent?
If you are not on a schedule or you haven’t applied any yet I’d apply ASAP
Pre-Emergents are done, 10-10-10 next but what’s next in the Yard Mastery system?
Great info but what is a "Dusk Mask?" Time stamp 6:18
A mask to 😷 mask to keep the lawn debris out is your nose 👃 and mouth. DUST Mask 😷
Can you help a sister out in B'ham in the south
I have to stop and dump too much with my little mower. I’m gonna pay a company to scalp this year.
Yeah it is a lot of work👍🏾
Greenworks pro. Do you recommend sharpening the blades or buy new?
I’d sharpen them a couple of times then buy new.
Is dethatching Bermuda with a dethatcher recommended? I just scalped but unfortunately my mower doesn't go low enough to get all the dead grass up and off
I’d choose core aeration on Dethatching BermudaGrass
Im in California. When should I cut my grass really low?
When it starts greening
You say to drop it down to1”. I hit dirt. 😕 I can only scalp down to1.5”(next height) even though I’ve sanded twice. Is there something else going on?
No, you still have an uneven surface. If you are not going to level the lawn again you’ll have to come up on the cutting height so you don’t dirt scalp.
Toro Timemaster
If I’m going to scalp is there even a point in putting pre emergents down before or should I wait until after I scalp?
If you haven’t done any pre emergent then yes scalp first then add pre emergent same same if possible.
Inhaling all that “dusk” is the worst part:)
👍🏾
Ryobi self propel 20in battery mower…
BYD I applied pre emergent and weed kill for lawns on 2/9 when do I apply fertilizer?
Wait until it starts greening 40-60 percent
@@BYDonBermudaGrassCentral Thanks BYD!!
BYD..I'm in SC..should I put my pre-emergent down now? I somethin online that said to do it after March 20. I scalped and put down the spectracide weed killer and Image red label two days ago. Trying to find out if now is a good time for the pre-emergent
I’d apply ASAP. If you haven’t applied any since September and you been getting lots of rain 🌧, Apply NOW 👍🏾
