Sonic is not good...it has barely ever been good. Barely any properties from this game franchise have proven to be remotely entertaining, games, movies, cartoons....everything. - Ігри
While I do heavily disagree I understand that Sonic just isn’t your thing.
Sonic *was* the answer to Nintendo’s Mario yes. But he’s out grown that, people don’t like Sonic games just because of the character himself (speaking personally here) but more-so on the high speed platforming that’s incredibly satisfying and niche to anything put out onto the market.
I’m not going to sit here and say “you’re wrong because-“ because you aren’t, you’re valid in your opinion and it’s fine that this type of game style just isn’t for you.

Personally I'm I huge sonic fan and I understand why you dislike sonic games. A lot of them are just empty shells of creative and gameplay ideas rushed and put together with many glitches and fundamental problems that make the experience not worthwhile. (which is why every time I see a trailer for a new sonic game I set my expectations low, and if it's good I'm pleasantly surprised.)

Lamborghini as we know it, was created as a response to Ferrari🤷♂️. However, you said some true and shareable things and, yes, we all are waiting for that game, but we have to remember that Sonic, despite the 10 years of total black-out, is still one of the most famous franchises in the world, and I'm not talking about only videogames, it's still an icon, and, personally speaking, the lore has so much potential that we can't even realize it, because sega has never exploited it enough. Sonic Frontiers is not a masterpiece but at least gives me hope. I mean, I'm like "come on Sega, you have a lot of fans, an enviable lore and now money thanks to the movies (Sonic 2 has almost reached the 2006 Cars grossing, which in 2022 is pretty good, i mean, Sega will earn something from this(?)), wtf are you waiting for to dare?"

I swear, mario fans call Sonic fans toxic because of a select few fans. Meanwhile, they hate on every Sonic game just cause it's not Mario. I'm not saying all Mario fans are toxic (I'm a Mario fan myself). It just feels very hypocritical.

Now let me just clarify that I can definitely see where you're coming from. If you only know Sonic from an outside perspective, especially on the internet, you'll almost never hear anything good about this franchise. And in most cases, they are correct.
But the problem is, they never share the full story. You make it seem like Sonic has just been failure after failure, but if that's the case, how the hell is he still alive today? That's the problem with this take. Not that it's in correct. Definitely not, a lot of what is said here is valid. The problem is that it's misinformed. I can name many Sonic games that most people will say are great. That includes casuals, fans, critics and developers.
Adventure, Adventure 2, Generations, Colors, Frontiers, Mania, Superstars, Rush, Rush Adventure, Advance 1-3 (kinda iffy, very few mention it), 1, 2, 3, K, CD and probably more that I'm forgetting. All of these games here are highly appraised, and their average scores range from 7-9.
Let's not forget the 2 Movies, Prime, IDW, Archie, Fleetway, Sonic X, Adventures of, SATam, crap ton of merch, and prolly more.
Clearly, this series is not a failure. There is so much good accomplished by the series. The only reason it seems that way is because he's been a laughing stock since 2006. It's gotten to the point where people genuinely think Sonic was never, is not, and cannot be good, yet he's still going strong. The facts have been so skewed against the hedgehog that when you look at it from surface level, its just bad.
Lastly, I just want to say that your opinion on Sonic is valid. After seeing so many videos talking about how people clowned on (and still do) Sonic, I'm not surprised people feel this way. It's fine if you don't like Sonic. All I want to say is that it's really not that bad. You don't have be a die hard fan to apreciate anything from the franchise. You don't have to, but just know that there is a reason this franchise is still alive.
@@sikosonix901 really well formed comment but I just have to point out that this video wasn’t to say “Sonic is bad end of discussion” it was to say there’s plenty of good sonic games and the fans deserve great games but the publishers and sonic team takes them for granted. I say at the end of the video I hope it’s great.
I’m gonna be honest, I’ve never liked Sonic. Not even the classic game, literally the only redeeming quality is the music. SEGA should’ve just been a company based around music.

I'll always be a die hard Sonic fan, but I can't help but agree with a lot of what your saying. Sonic for the longest time, hasn't had a game that's been truly great, we haven't really had a Mario Odyssey yet. Outright bad? Not really........ok, a few times, but definitely nothing ground breaking, and I think Forces really solidified how bad of a state the series was in. That said, I'm really optimistic for the series going forward. Sonic Frontiers was a great game imo that wasn't perfect but was a massive step in the right direction. The movies have been amazing, Shadow Generations looks pretty good. I won't say that the franchise has been saved or anything, but I'm definitely hopeful.
I think a lot of people are jumping to conclusions about this video. You're definitely not a hater, just have some thoughts about the series as a whole. (While also criticizing Nintendo, which is definitely a bigger sin on the Internet than criticizing Sonic.)

While I disagree with Sonic sucking as I am a huge Sonic fan, you do make some good points that I can agree with. The only thing I strongly disagree with is 1:57. I don’t believe that’s true. Yes, Sonic does have some MAJOR failures like Sonic 06 and Forces as you showed. But the other games you showed should not be there in my opinion.
Sonic Adventure was a great transition to 3D for Sonic. Does it have flaws? Yes. But so does Mario 64. But that game is always praised for “revolutionizing 3D” (which it did. don’t get me wrong).
Sonic Adventure 2 was a great sequel with good content, gameplay, great characters, and an amazing story.
Heroes is fun, very flawed, but fun. I personally believe the heroes gimmick is the best one in the series that they should tweak and bring back.
Unleashed was only hated because of the time it came out imo. it was the next mainline after 06. So it was cool to just hate on Sonic back in the late 2000s because of how horrendous 06 was. But now that hating on Sonic isn’t cool anymore, people can now see that Unleashed is a great game with a charming story, beautiful graphics, and riveting gameplay. Even the werehog. Yes, it’s not for everyone. But I feel like once you put time into it, it can be fun.
Colors is overrated imo, but it’s still good. It helped get the Franchise back on its feet after years of ridicule.
Finally, Generations. literally my favorite Sonic game. Such an amazing game. Only flaw to me is that it’s too short and easy.
I get what you were saying, but I feel like it only applies to games like 06, Forces, Boom, and maybe a few others. I personally don’t believe the classic era was the ONLY time Sonic was good. But I can see why Sonic is bad to you. Me, as a HUGE SONIC FAN, also gets sick of the stuff Sega does with the franchise and feels skeptical about new releases. I think the general communication of this video fell flat. The idea was to say Sonic fans deserve better and the franchise has been disrespected and given too many poor releases. I'm coming back to UA-cam soon and I'm hoping my communication style, writing and script writing has improved in that time. Thank you for your well thought out comment. This point that sonic was just an answer to mario and NOT designed to be a ''good'' game is one I don't think is right sonic was designed NOT only around being a response to mario but as an innovative game: he was designed to being able to earn speed through the manipulation of physics giving him the ability to roll into a ball, there was never a game ever that you cold earn speed through momentum

Let's face it; there was a feeling you got playing Sonic on the Genesis back in the '90s that you don't get from 3D Sonic. That doesn't mean 3D Sonic is bad, it just doesn't replicate that same feeling. I've never been able to get into 3D Sonic for that reason. Younger fans who grew up in the era of 3D Sonic had a different experience. They either don't understand why older fans think 3D sonic is so bad or they even prefer 3D sonic over the classic 2D games.
Excellent video. As character I think sonic is just horrible, from design to annoying and edgy personality I dont think he could be made more unlikeable. Really makes me wonder is money the only reason why they keep making all these cashgrab games around him and what is wrong with the fans for supporting this soulless garbage franchise.

Sonic is Amazing to me! however the games are kinda weird, and are bad, i do think they are getting better! (Sonic Frontiers and Sonic superstars).
However, sonic IS losing his style but atleast they tried, Right?
so, just from the get go Sonic adventure 1 worked, sonic adventure 2, yet you cross them out, so that’s a red flag off the bat. But also, the reason why sonic might’ve sucked for so long, is not actually sonic teams fault, it stems from issues all the way back in the console wars that still affect the company to this day. Did you know the company when backed out of the consul wars, would’ve died if some person gave all of his money to the company on his deathbed, did you know levels of sonic heroes were made by one guy who was near death, and did you know there is a wedge between American and Japan SEGA, that made it not just hard for them to communicate, but just hard for them to cooperate in general? There was so much happening back then and yet you just say sonic sucks without giving any second thought, in a five minute video.

And that game ends up tarnishing the rep of the franchise and staining the rep of sonic team .
The gorgeous game that almost nailed it but fell so short due to the bad execution of another gamaplay style overday over night , that caused the pretty reviews and a certain cycle about = a new game annouced + shows the greatness + hoping a return to the glory days + spmething goes wrong and ... = BOOM ! the game fails again and cycle repeats
Then the 2010s came
And we know that decade when sega finnaly is starting the rebecame profitable but sonic frachise all the greatness is being obliterated in favor of rebooting the structure of the frachise to make us forget about 2006 wth colors but that will be bringed up time and time again
Explains why yes generation a celebration of the franchise s' glory and dark days but still restraining themselves and it marks the start of the nostalgia abuse era when they try hard to bring back the series to its original root by removing the soul and charm of its original roots so they can be souless and sour .
Why sonic lost world despite sonic s'animations being appealing and good , lost worlds literally tried to be a literall rip off of mario galaxy wth mario-ish villains thanks to that terrible wii u deal partnership bcuz sega wanted to "experiment the structure of the series again" .

Ironically, thanks to Sega incompetence, it leaves the fans to fill that void. If the fans don’t like it, they change it. Or maybe people are just sonic fans because they had other exposure, like from the TV shows, comic books, or movies. With Mario, it’s just one interpretation, but with sonic it’s not that simple. How come even though the TV show and comic book series are dead, we still hear about Sally and freedom fighters? How come even when you’re not a sonic fan, if you step an inch into the fandom, you will eventually hear her name? When it comes to sonic even though games are the main thing, they are not everything, even in the games themselves.
If I ask someone, “why do you like Mario?” They would say “because I like his games.” But if you ask someone, “why do you like sonic?” Sure you would probably get “because I like his games” That’s in reality not all of it. They could also say “I only like the classic games” or “I like the TV show” or “I like the movies” or “I like the comic books” or “I like his fan games.” Sonic feels more than just a video game character, well someone like Pikachu, link, or Mario, are just that, video game shells. I’m not saying Sega is excused, I’m saying that for us, sonic feels more than just a video game character, does hating him for his games, while valid, for us does not feel like the full story.

2:00 Oooh, i heavily disagree with this picture, because SA1 and SA2 were rough at some points, but did enough things right at their time to be very memorable games.
I like both Mario and Sonic, but I like Sonic more, to me he is exactly what you said he was created for: an icon. He left such a mark on me at an early age that i don't think i can ever forget about the stupid hedgehog even if he sucks for a long time.
Honestly i think that a big part of it is simply SEGA not treating Sonic for what he was supposed to be: one of gaming's biggest icon. Big Mario games have a HUGE time gap between them and are clearly higher budget than modern Sonic games, which are mostly released yearly/bi-yearly and have a clear AA, arguably B-level budget sometimes. Mario innovates very slowly, but it does happen eventually, and we get games like Galaxy which is amazing, while Sonic throws itself in every direction to see what sticks, and a lot of these leaves you scratching your head thinking "why did they think this would go well with Sonic?". It's as if when they messed up hard in the 2000s, they stopped believing the franchise could be something big and just kept it there, not as their flagship, but just as some IP that gives easy money sometimes. Well, the point is that with two years and a smaller budget it's very little time to guarantee consistent excellence and good innovation in gamedev, which is why i think Nintendo games mantain the status quo for a long time.
Nintendo knows the huge IPs they have and will refuse to release anything but excellence as best as possible to mantain their reputation, and trying to be innovative AND great at the same time is hard. I'm not even defending Nintendo for it, because as a consumer I don't care that much. I'll become tired of waiting decades just for a new Metroid game, and also i will just not buy a game if it looks to similar to one i have already played unless it's very significantly better, so this approach does have their weaknesses. Even then, i would rather that Sonic games followed this development philosophy instead of whatever SEGA (or hopefully, were, since Frontiers had a lot more dev time) doing with Sonic, because it really paid off in the long run.
Mario is at the top of his game and has evolved a lot, every game is PACKED with almost everything that made previous titles good, because they have time and budget to experiment and BUILD these good things in each game, while Sonic forgets and is in some ways too simple because of it. To this day, Mario is thriving based on a lot of things that freaking SM64 defined, but they don't recycle it 1:1, they find new ways to incorporate a very familiar moveset in new fun levels and think a lot about how these old things will mingle with they new things. Meanwhile, what was the last innovation in Sonic that had a real stay? Boost from the Rush series, and even then they just don't look for more things to do with it. In Unleashed, it was cool and added an easy but neat management factor in order to go as fast as possible (or not that easy in the PS2/Wii versions). In generations, they got much more generous with boost but hey who cares going fast is cool. in Forces though, it makes the game play itself basically.
It's honestly disappointing how an icon that had been around for so much has such a hard time iterating upon itself, specially when the SAME DEV does what we are asking with the Yakuza/Like a Dragon series! Admittedly, it's hard to compare them fairly because they are very different, but to me the difference in level of care is just clear.

We are getting a fully new 24 stage 2D Sonic now and Frontiers was a first step into going back to becoming AAA but we might still be far

If you can play a game like Sonic Generations and say it is bad, there's really no hope for you. You simply have bad taste in video games I'm afraid.
Firstly, I said "in the last decade". Generations came out in.....2011, aka 12 years ago...not 10. Later on in the video I say they haven't done anything innovative in 30 years aka since "fast AF side scroller" what innovation have they brought to gaming or the franchise.
Secondly, and I can't stress this enough. This video critiques sonic devs inability to change or try anything different AND succeed at the same time. Generations is 50% 2D and 50% 3D and does (for Sonic fans) and incredible job at merging old and new. But even then I'm sure most reviews at the time say the 2D sections were trying to feel like sonic of old but correct me if im wrong because thats purely from memory.
That said, you're essentially making my point. Your reference point for a top tier sonic game is from 2011. Sonic fans deserve better.
p.s I have zero intentions to play Generations.

You're wrong. It's not even about opinion, you're just wrong. "I'm going to compare and talk about why Pizza is better than bread!!111!1!!" Mario and Sonic are far too different to compare, and Sonic's gameplay from the Classic, Adventure, and Modern games are far too different from anything else in the platforming genre. And the thing about how every Sonic game failed after the classics is so fucking wrong, if Sonic is like Bubsy then why did the franchise live for so long? It's because while there isn't much consistency, Sonic always tries something new, and we have seen multiple titles building up over the years, from 2D to 3D which are truly great. Sonic Adventure, Adventure 2, Colors, and Generations are all groundbreaking games IN THE LEAST. If YOU don't like Sonic then that's ok, if it's not for you then it's not for you, but don't be an asshole and say that Sonic was never good after the classics because you're not into the later games, MILLIONS of people LOVE the many 3D games, so don't say that they're wrong for liking something. And again, Mario is mediocre at BEST in movies and TV shows, while Sonic truly EXCELLS, Sonic movie 2 is very well liked by fans and general audiences, and Sonic X, SATam, and Boom are absolutely BELOVED by the people who followed them.

The comparison to Mario was firstly, because that is the only reason Sonic exists so I was giving the context of history. Secondly I used it as a way to show how a legacy franchise can grow, evolve and still manage to bring in new fans. Not once did I say Mario's gameplay is X so Sonics should be X. I gave a whole section to talking about how Mario (to me) isn't ALL THAT.
"Trying something new" can also be translated to "we don't know what we're doing so we're trying everything". Out of ALL of the games you could have mentioned across every system and across the 26 years you resorted to listing the SAME 4 everyone else lists. SA1, SA2, Colours & Generations. 4 titles, the latter 2 of which are a decade old.
One of the more beloved Sonic games (colours) shifted 2 million units on one of the highest selling consoles of all time (wii).
The things I did get wrong is firstly, I was lazy in editing and grabbed a premade image of a bunch of sonic games, some of which are colours and generations so i could / should have changed that and also I seemed to have given the impression that I think the classics are good, which I don't, not really. I think they were fine and I played them as a kid but didn't do much for me.
I didn't say anyone is wrong for liking a thing, It's a video on my channel about why I don't like a thing and i gave a few reasons why thats all. Just as much as someone can like a thing, I can dislike a thing, just like im sure I could cover a game I love and you may feel the opposite.

Even putting aside the fact that you would threaten to kill someone over their opinion on a video game franchise, this is like the least intimidating threat I've ever seen.
You point out that the classic 2D sonic games are the only 'good' sonic games, and I'd have to heavily disagree with that. The classic games aren't even really that good. They're filled with flaws and game design problems, and the gameplay they strive for just doesn't work in 2D. I'd argue that the only real 'good' sonic games are the 2 adventure titles. Every other sonic game has been mediocre, if not just plain bad. That said, I have a lot of hope for the blue hedgehog and his friends, because I love the IP and want to see it do well. If sega just stuck to having a classic 2D pillar, and an adventure pillar, sonic *would* be a decent, if not great franchise. But they're so afraid of sticking to something that works, and constantly wants to nostalgia pander rather than make new games, and it's holding the series down. Not to mention pontaff who ruined a decade worth of sonic games with their terrible writing.
