I’m 58 now and cannot tell you how much I loved this programme. Every Thursday night at 9pm I was allowed to stay up and watch it. When it ended I just could not wait until the next Thursday. Oh and I was always Jack Regan when we played the Sweeney in the street.

60 now. Started watching it in 1976. My nickname at school was 'Sweeney'. When I moved to another school, in 1977, when asked my name I replied 'Jack Regan'. I don't think it had the desired effect! Great days.
I remember watching this as a kid with my dad when i stayed up late. " We're the sweeny son and we haven't got any trousers on. You're nicked! Put some breakfast on!"

That was John Thaw's first ever line as Regan when he burst into the bedroom of a criminal in the pilot "Regan".
Minder takes it for me. The early Minder’s were so well written. Was watching “A Nice Little Wine” earlier tonight and it was just class. The script and acting were brilliant.
As an ex cop who started out in service during the late 70s ..I have to say that the sweeney was the best British police series ever.👍
I have to ask you during your time as a cop did you ever refer to anyone that you were pursuit of or in the middle of apprehending or "nicking" as a.. "!{{SLAG}}!"? 😆
@@geoffsullivan4063 not directly Geoff..I think it might have got used jokingly because of the Sweeney ..we did have an ex London detective inspector who I think used it …I doubt it is now though..my sons a cop and I think it’s more rainbow flags and watch your personal pronouns 😬
@@davidcousins3508 yeah, things have really changed in the service since your day (which was also my day). As a life long Londoner, I remember that in the late '70s the Met were best known for their racism. It was their assault on the 1976 Notting Hill carnival that caused the riots that August bank holiday. More riots ensued in 1981 in Brixton and 1985 in Tottenham sparked by wrongful deaths caused by the police. The Met's political arm, the SPG, were very active throughout that period clubbing protestors over the head. Let's also not forget the other thing they were famous for, their corruption, especially the Vice Squad in Soho.
I can tell you from personal experience, as someone who has lived and worked in Tottenham, Brixton and Peckham, that little has changed since then. Police were confrontational then and they're confrontational now. Maybe at Hendon, Chelmsford and the other training schools, they include courses on political correctness these days (I've sat through a few of those myself) but they still teach police cadets that the way to deal with trouble is to escalate it.
The Met is whiter now than it was 40 years ago because they behave like an army of occupation in black areas and the community considers them the enemy. Keep your culture war nonsense to yourself. I'm not buying that bullshit because I have lived and therefore know the reality. _The Sweeney_ was great police fiction, that inspired _Life on Mars_ 30 years later, but fiction was all it was.

Loved the Sweeney when I was a teen in the 70s , no video recorders back then and I can honestly say that on Thursday night between 9-10 pm the streets where I lived where deserted because we where all watching the SWEENEY.... 👍

I so miss those days loved the Sweeney.
The Sweeney is imo the best tv series ever made, I've just started rewatching all the old Network box sets I bought around 20 years ago. I haven't watched them for around 10 years and have deliberately ignored the ITV4 repeats so I can enjoy each episode without remembering the dialogue and plots. The Network box sets were superb with loads of interviews with the cast and writers, great extra features with John and Dennis, the sound is in glorious stereo and the remastered picture quality is way better than the guff ITV4 is churning out. Just a shame they didn't remaster all 4 series on BluRay as I'd happily have bought them no matter what the price. The Sweeney and Minder deserve a BluRay restoration as they're tv gold.
I've got the Network box sets too - that's what I take my source footage from.

7:18 I grew up in Fulham (born in Parsons Green) and my secondary school was St Mark's in Ackmar Road. As I was leaving one afternoon, I recall seeing the cast and crew filming outside Brigade House.
In 1982, my first job (as In-house designer) on leaving school was in that very building, which was the National HQ for the Christian youth organisation, The Boys' Brigade.

Thanks for this lovely bit of nostalgia. Euston Films and Troy Kennedy Martin gave us a lot of good TV series that are timeless. Great actors, writers and producers, and great production values. People are still watching these shows which will never be equalled.

Farm lane was still intact about 12 years ago. Another local iconic building gone for some million pound houses.

The highlight of my experience at boarding school in the 1970s was watching the Sweeney in a large room set aside for watching television briefly in the evenings

They filmed the first episode ringer on my estate in peckham (bells garden estate)the big fight at the end, my flat is in several scenes, I was only 6 at the time but I remember it like it was yesterday.
Great job! In fond memory of two fine actors and the best TV cop show ever 👍I was born and grew up in Streatham in the early 1960s, so a bit south from where you ended up. Considering how London has changed since then, it's great to see how many of the older features still remain. Next time I'm in Fulham, I'll visit one of those spots and light up a snout in honour ofJack & George.

Love this Sweenealogy. Very well narrated and in the 'Landan'' accent. As an Irish fan from Dublin this series was my teen years. I binge watch the Sweeney every now and again. Great work!
"Not a bad day George" - what a great idea for a channel. I agree that 'Victims' was a memorable episode, with Sheila Reid's portrayal of Doreen Haskins' breakdown ahead of it's time.

They used to film in Lombard Road, Battersea. You’d see them screaming up and down the road in their Ford Cortina’s!

Great video must of took a lot of work ! The Sweeney is without a doubt the best TV series we’ve ever had. Followed by The Professionals, love Bodie n Doyle ! Then of course Minder with George and Dennis, three absolute belters.

Totally agree with you buddy....the best tv shows ever...I'm a huge professionals fan as I wasn't allowed to watch the sweeney first time round( past bedtime).....where did the time go?
I could never get fully into The Professionals as I don't think think the chemistry between Bodie and Doyle worked that well. Lewis Collins and Gordon Jackson were legends, but I've never warmed to Martin Shaw as an actor and felt the Doyle character lacked the humour and wit of Bodie and Cowley. I love the cars, the action and the 70s scenery of The Professionals, but feel it'd have worked better had they got another actor to play Doyle.
@@stumagoo2395 I've never thought of it that way....and after some thought I believe you are right....maybe thats why my mate and I would argue who's turn it was to be bodie as neither of us wanted to be Doyle when we played in a scrapyard rolling over car bonnets....the sweeney had deeper storylines and a grittier feel....but nostalgia wins it for the professionals here....love all the 70s and 80s footage in both of them tho....when Britain was Britain....
@@stumagoo2395 They were filming an episode of The Professionals in Islington near Barnard Park. My Dad used to run around the football pitch and during a break from filming Martin Shaw spoke to my Dad and ran around with him. After one lap of the pitch he was knackered and gave up!
The Sweeney is one of my favourite TV shows. Was too young to watch the original transmission (i would have been 5 months old when the first episode was broadcast). I saw some reruns on UK Gold in the 90s and was hooked. Got every episode on DVD now. It looks pretty violent for the time. Surprised it got broadcast but Thaw and Waterman (and Morgan) were all superb.

The Sweeney 1970s ITV I was ten years old and my mom used to let me stay up to watch it. I don't understand why they ever cancelled the series. Anyway many great memories from those days growing up with the Sweeney being one of them . I remember Tim Cook the ex Soldier and his sawn-off shotgun London really is the best city in the world to live in.
I have mixed feelings; I'd have loved there to be more episodes - but at the same time, maybe it had run it's course and it's better that it ended leaving me loving it and wanting more, rather than it running out of steam. In many ways, it - and Regan - are of their era, and as Haskins says towards the end, "the world's changing". I'm not sure Jack's brand of policing would have survived into the 80s...

The Sweeney also helped sell a lot of Ford cars, was responsible for a spike in smoking, and everyone walking around saying "shut it you slaaag" when I was a lad 😂
Great researched vids . My favourite villian who appeared in 2 episodes in series 3 was a character called Tim Cook . Pure physco, brilliantly played by the actor George Sweeney.

George Sweeney played Tim Cook with menace and was very convincing. On one of the dvds he is interviewed and tells the story of when they were making the episode "On the run". The actor Jon Sharp who played Uncle said that when George Sweeney was grabbing him by the shirt and threw him down the stairs he was grabbing his chest hair and it was hurting him. So they had to shoot the scene a few times😃

These four videos are fantastic , the episode a taste of fear I recognised an older Stamford bridge , remembered it and always wondered exactly where the observation was filmed in farm lane , fantastic investigative work here , I will try and observe some of these locations next time I have some free time in the capital , fantastic work here relating to a programme I loved in the 70’s. Great video, very well researched and put together. I’m 20 and love the old tv shows. Got the box sets of The Sweeney, The Professionals, The Saint, Starsky & Hutch, Kojak, Only Fools and Horses, and more. It’s well worth getting ‘Regan’ the 1974 episode that started The Sweeney on dvd, the only thing from Armchair Cinema that had a series made of it.

As a big Sweeney fan, checkout the Actors in the 1967 film " The Robbery " starring Stanley Baker, many known faces, especially James Booth who played a DI in the Flying Squad ! Best crime series ever .

I used to skip my homework to catch the Sweeney on Monday nights in the seventies ( no video or catch up in those days) . Mostly serious drama but some great comedy moments too, especially when Morecambe and Wise appeared.

Went in that nick a few times LOL.( think it was Heckfield Pl. and when I left school worked at Perretts Electrical on the corner of Cassidy Rd where the carpet shop is now.) and my grandad is buried in Fulham cemetery. So much has changed there now and not the place it used to be.

Grew up with the Sweeney, always been the best ever TV drama. My wedding car was a blue MK2 Jag, love it. I use many of the lines and rhythming slang much to my Wife's annoyance ! Soooooooo gritty & funny, thanks for the memories.

Great tv drama when they were at there very best, wish someone could do a similar then and now for the first 4 series of Gange Hill.
I visit Magravine cemetery every time I attend Charing Cross hospital, because of its Sweeney connections - but I also found out recently that the funeral episode for Grandad in Only Fools... is also shot there.
