In that case, I recommend you to play Ocarina of Time, relaxing music and very exciting exploration. Plus, the story will soften your heart, and terrify as you play the sequel. It's an amazing experience.
I think in many ways Links Awakening was more of a milestone than Nintendo realized. It showed that more serious writing and deeper themes were possible on the GB. Plus it not being do rigidly written is also a plus.
It also introduced the ability to jump (Roc's feather), learning different songs, and it was the first Zelda game where each dungeon had its own musical theme. Very impressive for its time!
My son is taking a break from TOTK and I’m taking a break from my hundredth time playing Link to the Past on my SNES to watch this together. Thank for your consistent great work and the memories you help make!
First thing I do with my inventory in this game is always to map the sword to the B button, and the shield to the A button until I get the Roc's Feather. I keep the Roc's Feather on A as much as possible. "A is Jump, B is Attack" is a control scheme I try to use as much as possible on most controllers.
Welcome back, UCBVG. Glad to see you're covering this - handheld consoles were hard to justify buying when I was a kid, so I never got the chance to play this on its native platform. Also, I'm glad to see you're okay - it's been a couple weeks without an upload and I was starting to worry something had happened to you.
I have fond memories playing this game as a kid. Especially when the dx version came out, I remember sitting at a Wal mart kiosk display playing this until I got to the color dungeon and beat it. It took around an hour for 9 year old me... In my mid thirties and I can 100% the game in a couple of hours. It'll always hold a special place in my heart.
With the long wait I knew there was something epic coming soon, but I wasn't expecting something this good. This game has been on my UCBVG wishlist for a while. Thank you UCBVG!
Absolutely one of my favorite games! Anyone else replayed it so much that you figured out how to save keys in certain dungeons and even soft locked yourself part of the way through? Good times 🐺🔧
My favorite Zelda game of all time! Oh the nostalgia hits hard ❤️ The first time I entered the dream world I remember thinking it was so mysterious and I couldn't wait to be able to explore further. Good times! If you do more Gameboy games I would love to see Super Mario Land 2 and Dragon Warrior Monsters 😊
I played this on the original game boy monochrome, I was so frustrated that it was so hard to see, but loved the world, and at first I couldn’t believe how big this game was.
A fun trick for people who love Marin is if you want her to follow you around for the rest of the game, you can use the Select button warp to zip past the walrus with her and you don't lose her. It gets a little glitchy when the rooster joins you but it goes right back to normal ol Marin when the rooster leaves. Obviously this only works in versions with the Select warp, which, I guess, got removed at some point. But then you get Marin as your personal travel buddy for the rest of the game as long as you don't ever talk to the walrus.
Playing this game on the original Gameboy was an amazing experience. There is just something haunting about the way the eerie chimes of the GB sound chip and the monochromatic palette enhance the feeling of exploring the depths of this strange secluded island. Most people opt for colorized versions today, but for me there's indefinable value in the limitations of the original.
This is still the pinnacle of Nintendo's imagination imo, from the heart-pounding experience playing on a friend's Game Boy in a tent decades ago, up to this very day. I'm working while half-watching this, and I couldn't stop myself quietly humming these iconic tunes! Thank you for your effort to revitalize this classic and make it accessible to other generations!
I think that the things that had stumped me the longest were: 1) Where were you supposed to go after beating the Key Cavern (I actually stumbled across Dungeon 6 before I eventually found Dungeon 4) 2) A particular room in Dungeon 6 that I couldn't figure out how to move past 3) One of the pillars in the Eagle's Tower (it took me a while to figure out how to move the ball to where it had to go)
I've probably played and beaten this game more times than any other game I've ever owned. It was my favorite game as a kid. And it holds up so well to this day.
My favorite Zelda by far!! I'm so glad to see you tackle this one. The world and story are so bizarre , charming, and at times somber in a way the rest of the series never quite replicates.
Love the videos! I learned the definition of the word "nigh" as a kid because my mom made me look it up in the dictionary. "Nigh" means near, the owl tells the truth! The seashell is near.
I cannot tell you how much this game specifically means to me! Like many others, when I begged my parents to finally get me a Gameboy, I didn't want Tetris, I specifically told them I wanted this game to come with my handheld! I have beaten this game more times than I can count, and the story never, ever gets old! It's not your traditional Zelda, but the story is so much more involved in so many ways, but so simple and complete. Still my absolute favorite Zelda game! I have it in the original version, the DX version and also the Switch remake. It's my favorite! Such a great game! So glad it's made it into your videos!
I played through this as a 10 year old on my gameboy and loved it. Have played through the Switch remake as well, but it was such a pleasure to watch you do this 30 years after first playing it.
@1:23:22 There is one more little secret at Richards. If you wait long enough youll hear a small jingle that is totaka song which is in many of nintendo games
I agree, you need to start a channel dedicated to the information about every game you bring to the beginning of every game. The history alone, is emotionally groundbreaking.
This is amazing. Your narration is really funny and you literally go through the whole game. I’m just listening to this as if it were a long ass movie. Great work man!
Man, this brings back memories. I had this on/for the original Game Boy in high school, and my entire time in the Navy. I learned a good number of the tricks mentioned here from reading Nintendo Power magazine. Keep up the good work!
one funny thing i don't think was mentioned: if you go to trendy game with Marin and say no enough times, eventually you're 'forced' to let her play with choices of "Yes" or "Okay". it was pretty hilarious when i first saw it and was like omg i don't have a choice :D
Glad to see you post again! Just finished this in between an Ocarina playthrough when it dropped on the Switch Online. This was an emotional trip and a really fun adventure, wish I had played as a kid as LTTP is my favorite game, can't wait to buy the Switch version and enjoy again.
I've been waiting for this ever since you teased it during the credits of LTTP. This is still my all-time favorite Zelda game, the first one I ever beat. I literally spent half the summer after 7th grade calling my friend who also had the game and walking each other through the spots where we got stuck.
Absolutely great choice and video! I remember getting a special original Gameboy and Link's Awakening (first version) bundle back in the day. This was the first Zelda game I was able to beat (almost entirely) on my own, so seeing all these shortcuts, secrets and differences for the DX was great. Looking forward to Part 2!
This game will forever hold a special place in my soul. It was one of the most enjoyable games I played. & I played it through on an original game boy!
Thanks! looking forward to devouring another of your game guides :D EDIT: Finished watching! Excellent guide - ive only played the remake on switch but it was awesome to see the original game played expertly. I look forward to part 2!
Dude, this is my favourite game in the Zelda series and you KILLED this video!!! Thanks so much for producing this. I appreciate the attention to detail you took about all the small cute whimsical things this game has to offer. This is super relaxing to watch
You actually can change back to the green clothes by exploiting a bug. Kill 90 enemies without loading a new map (easiest to do on the overworld) and depending on the index of the last enemy killed it will change your clothes. If I recall the possibilities are: index 0: gives you the green clothes index 1: gives you the red clothes index 2: gives you the blue clothes index 3: gives you the damage clothes. Link has the the palette he flashes when he takes damage. It acts like the red clothes but without the the knockback. index 4: gives you the rupee clothes. Link shares his palette with the rupee. It also changes to the palette of the outside of the Eagle Tower when at the entrance. It doesn't have any special effect. index 5: gives you the chameleon clothes. Link shares his palette with one of the current environment palettes. Changes around a lot. Has no special effect.
I bought this game shortly after I bought a GBA XP in 2004 specifically for Metroid Zero Mission. But I got stuck early on and just gave up and never went back to it. Maybe I should, using the tips from this episode are surely the oniy way I'd get very far. I don't have the patience for games like this anymore.
Love the new episode! One of my favorite games, currently playing it again to your video😊. Seasons and ages would definitely be an awesome collection of videos. Thank You!
Being so engulfed in the Zelda series my whole life, this title hits like a fever dream. When I really try to rank my favorites, this is never lower than number 2 on the list. There are very few games, ever, that give this special vibe. From the "slightly-off" different world, to the original songs that sound so much like a remix of some long-lost 80's power ballads. I swear I can hear a wailing, emotional guitar instead of the chiptune mix in many cases. I absolutely love the way this game makes my brain-cartridge feel like it's not pushed in the console correctly. One of the most well-crafted pieces of media EVER.
I don't know if it's exclusive to the Switch remake, but there is a hidden side to Marin you can see if you keep hitting the hen in the village. At first, she'll be shocked, and then she'll get angry at you. But, if you keep at it, she'll actually giggle and ask you to do it again! Yep. Marin is somewhat of a closet sadist.
I'm surprised you didn't mention that when you are escorting Marin to Animal Village, if you keep attacking the cuckoo or the foxes, she starts to get into it asking you to hurt the animal more and laughing a bit...brokenly.
Love this game. I played it many times on gameboy when I was a kid. And my son discovered it and played it on my old gameboy too. And now he got the remake on Switch and we've both played that too. Can't wait till part 2 comes out!
Another wonderful video. I remember spending way too long fighting the genie because I thought I needed to knock him into the wall with my sword. I was a dumb kid, since I should have known the item in the dungeon would be used against the boss in that area.
Great video again! I appreciate all the details and backstory you add, it makes it much better to understand these classics. I grew up with these games but younger generations have no idea about all that stuff. So even if they never play these games they could at least learn how we got where we are today with games like Tears of the Kingdom and others
I finally got a Gameboy bundled with this game. And later bought the DX edition. I wouldn't mind finally giving the Switch version aa try. Thanks for another guide video Mr. UCBVGs!
i discover something recently about zelda, and i want to share it with you. in link's awakening, if you have the compass in a dungeon and enter any room that has a hidden key in it, a jingle will be played, did you know that they used the same sound in a BoTW when you open the map? It's exactly the same but in a fast tempo. and they also used the same sound when you open the map in ToTK in different notes but same intervals! I'm feeling proud that my musical memory still serves me right😅 Thanks.
ALLLLLRIIIIIIIIIGHT...on the name input screen, create a quest log with the name "ZELDA," and see (or rather HEAR) what happens! Great work as usual, love your videos!
Wow I was just recently thinking about playing this again & now I've got good reason to! Love watching your guides even when it's not a game I've played or would play
My fiancée and I have both been playing this! I’ve been playing it on the Game and Watch while she explores it for the first time on Switch. It’s been a lot of fun guiding her through her first Zelda game!
Thanks for the video! FYI: you can get the original tunic back in the DX version using a glitch that happens after killing exactly 90 enemies without entering or exiting a cave/house/dungeon/etc. If the 90th enemy killed has "index 0," then the game gives you the green tunic back after killing it. You can use this glitch to also get red tunic (kill index 1), blue tunic (kill index 2), or glitched tunics (kill index 3 or 4). Here, the index refers to the enemy's number given to identify it from other enemies on screen. If it's the only enemy when you enter a screen, it'll be index 0, otherwise it's worth checking which enemy is which index on each screen. The trick is very easy and can be undone by going to the color dungeon or doing the trick again, but it takes a little time to kill 90 enemies on the overworld - I recommend doing a loop of the Toronbo Shores since the sea urchins, octoroks, leevers, and sand crabs all are easy to kill and respawn after a few screens.
I recently started replaying this game on my Game&Watch, and it's been a pain to have a text guide up to walk me through it. This is a huge help in finding some of the trickier hidden items compared to somebody's written description saying "Go north, west, north again twice" and me trying to remember how many steps I've taken. Thanks for the guide, and for the deep dive on such a classic game!
@@orangutanexpert To beat it? Nah. It's not hard to beat even with the level 1 sword and not picking up a single heart piece. To find 20 secret shells as early in the game as possible? A guide helps. I'm not as smart or cool as you are! Plus, there are a lot of fun tricks in this video that I didn't know about, so it's still worth watching even if I don't need it for the dungeons.
I've only ever played this game once a few years ago. Even so I personally think it's one of the best Zelda games. I look forward to getting the Switch version sometime.
The most important tip I can give is: activate the save menu when picking up pieces of power or the guardian acorn in order to skip the text that always appears. The text is very annoying but the power ups are useful. Just cancel out of the save menu with the B-button.
My favorite and best gaming channel on UA-cam! Thank you so much for covering one of my favorite games ever. I still have my CIB Gameboy game with the Nintendo Power guide, and the DX cart.
Even though I always get the L2 sword from the seashell mansion, I still get the Red Tunic from the color dungeon. 4X attack power is just too good to pass up; if enemies die before they can damage you, then the defense upgrade is moot. Like they say in Cobra Kai, "the best defense is more offense".
This was an entire summer vacation for me. My first Zelda game, too. I used to hunch over the edge of the couch with my Gameboy under the lamp, just listening to Marin sing. Core memories, these.
I usually feel annoyed by people who like a video before watching it, but for your vids, i like as I start it - i'll forget otherwise and I'll stop if you ever stop putting in so much effort and passion, but imo, you've earned a like looking forward to watching this before bed :)
I still can't believe that I beat this game at 14 while having no tips or google. It did take me about a year though cause I would get stuck on some puzzles, plus my knowledge of English wasn't up to par at the time. My biggest issue was the first room in the second (swap) dungeon. I could not figure out what I need to do there for a while :)
When you have Marin in your part if you continue to hit the chickens she actually likes it. She says something along the lines of "Yes, yes hit it again". Something like that. I find that out way back in the day.
42:09, Moldorm is also the name of the smaller enemies that look like the first boss of the game. Also, Moldorm was previously a boss in The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, specifically, the third of the Pendant Bosses.
If you stomp goombas (by jumping) you always get hearts (which can be very useful at times). However if you slash them with your sword you always get rupees. Nice! 😊 Also you can hold out your sword and use it to probe walls (press direction while holding your sword out) to see if a wall rings "hollow". Then you can bomb the wall to open a secret path.
Oh, perfect timing. I intend on replaying the switch version for the Seagull ending, and needed a good guide for optimizing collectibles and the trade sequence.
I recently played this game in the version that comes with Game and Watch device. I must say is the best ever, including the color white and green which is more relax and smooth with balanced color. Retro never gets old
Love these walkthroughs. I would never be able to watch someone else play all the way thru like with ur vids. Great job as always. Makes me wanna order a classic nes n a Gameboy n play.
Wooow this is one of my favorites!!! So much that I have it on original GB cartridge, GBC and switch remake!! Thanks for this one man! It was worth the wait!!
Never really played Zelda much in my childhood. I did play Link to the Past, but don't think I ever finished nor remember the game much. Recently I have been playing both of the new ones. BOTW and TOTK and they have been pretty fun so far. They have kinda sparked an interest in the series for me, so can't wait to try the other games of the franchise.
Glad you're back, UCBVG. Not that it is any of my business, but I was a little concerned when I didn't see any announcements last week. Hope you're doing well and that you had a nice break.
The most emotional and mood filled music, the most unique Zelda story. Amazing game. I can’t say enough about it.
In that case, I recommend you to play Ocarina of Time, relaxing music and very exciting exploration.
Plus, the story will soften your heart, and terrify as you play the sequel.
It's an amazing experience.
@@Davian2073 I mean ocarina is good but I think it’s overhyped. Plus I hate N64 graphics.

I think in many ways Links Awakening was more of a milestone than Nintendo realized. It showed that more serious writing and deeper themes were possible on the GB. Plus it not being do rigidly written is also a plus.
It also started many Zelda tropes, like the trade chain, fishing and bomb arrows.
Also, the dungeon design of LA was a step up from the design of dungeons from previous games. I love ALTTP, but LA has better dungeon design overall.
Agreed. Being able to have two items equipped is super nice too.
It also introduced the ability to jump (Roc's feather), learning different songs, and it was the first Zelda game where each dungeon had its own musical theme. Very impressive for its time!
@@msw0322 Jumping was introduced in Adventure of Link.

and they also used the same sound when you open the map in ToTK in different notes but same intervals!
I'm feeling proud that my musical memory still serves me right😅
Thanks.
Here 35:10
ALLLLLRIIIIIIIIIGHT...on the name input screen, create a quest log with the name "ZELDA," and see (or rather HEAR) what happens!
Great work as usual, love your videos!
Wow I was just recently thinking about playing this again & now I've got good reason to!
Love watching your guides even when it's not a game I've played or would play
Now this is what I’m talking about. Challenging games are what I watch this channel for. Give me some dirt!!!!
Dude, I literally just finished the 4 or so hours of your A Link to the Past video where you said, "Yeah, Link's Awakening is coming." And here it is!
These are my favorite bedtime videos. It's like being read my favorite stories from childhood
Dang I forgot this was on the game and watch.
You needed a guide for this game?...
Awesome! I beat this game a few months ago, and it was (mostly) fantastic. Cant wait to eventually revisit the game armed with your tips!
Totally worth the wait. UCBVG, you’re a legend
I've only ever played this game once a few years ago. Even so I personally think it's one of the best Zelda games. I look forward to getting the Switch version sometime.
Man I really appreciate how you beat the cuccos for science in the Zelda videos.
The most important tip I can give is: activate the save menu when picking up pieces of power or the guardian acorn in order to skip the text that always appears. The text is very annoying but the power ups are useful. Just cancel out of the save menu with the B-button.
Great tip!
My favorite and best gaming channel on UA-cam! Thank you so much for covering one of my favorite games ever. I still have my CIB Gameboy game with the Nintendo Power guide, and the DX cart.
Thanks for doing this one. Link's Awakening is in my Top 5 Zelda games of all time
Even though I always get the L2 sword from the seashell mansion, I still get the Red Tunic from the color dungeon. 4X attack power is just too good to pass up; if enemies die before they can damage you, then the defense upgrade is moot. Like they say in Cobra Kai, "the best defense is more offense".
My first game boy game. I was obsessed for years
This was an entire summer vacation for me. My first Zelda game, too. I used to hunch over the edge of the couch with my Gameboy under the lamp, just listening to Marin sing. Core memories, these.
Link's Awakening is the only Zelda game I've beaten and it's the only one I can always go back to
I've been wondering when our next episode was coming. Your covering these older Zelda games have by far been my favorite ucbvg episodes. Thanks alot
I usually feel annoyed by people who like a video before watching it, but for your vids, i like as I start it - i'll forget otherwise and I'll stop if you ever stop putting in so much effort and passion, but imo, you've earned a like
looking forward to watching this before bed :)
This game was a dream come true
49:20 I love that Chain Chomp Art on the left.
I'm so glad to see you back. I don't mind you taking off a week here and there, but...FOUR?! Don't scare us like that!
Your channel is THE BEST for retro games.
I like how the Color Dungeon's theme music is an homage to the dungeon theme from the original Legend of Zelda on NES.
The way you present these games is amazing, big fan.
If you stomp goombas (by jumping) you always get hearts (which can be very useful at times). However if you slash them with your sword you always get rupees. Nice! 😊
Also you can hold out your sword and use it to probe walls (press direction while holding your sword out) to see if a wall rings "hollow". Then you can bomb the wall to open a secret path.
Oh, perfect timing. I intend on replaying the switch version for the Seagull ending, and needed a good guide for optimizing collectibles and the trade sequence.
Yes he’s back!
I´ve just started Legend of Zelda : Tears of Kingdom. I might watch previous Zelda games just to catch up on your channel :)
this is the best zelda game ever, and nobody can convince me otherwise
I recently played this game in the version that comes with Game and Watch device. I must say is the best ever, including the color white and green which is more relax and smooth with balanced color. Retro never gets old
Never played this game but here's hoping this video helps my cripling insomnia! Thx for the great and chill content
Literally my favorite UA-camr rn
Glad you're back, UCBVG. Not that it is any of my business, but I was a little concerned when I didn't see any announcements last week. Hope you're doing well and that you had a nice break.
