When I was around 10 my buddy finally beat Aganim in Link to the Past and our enthusiastic high fives resulted in me taking a hard slap that sent me flying. Great moment. An aside, what 4th grader is 6 foot tall? We need to ban high capacity assault children!
I've played this game probably 20 times and now I'm gonna sit and watch an hour long video about it. Dragon quest will always be the series that defined my childhood
The series is the number one reason that RPGs, and especially JRPGs, are the genre of video games I've invested by far the most time into over my 42 years of life. I had all 4 of the "Dragon Warrior" games on the NES as a kid, and although 4 was probably my favorite, I definitely played the second game a lot as a kid. I never imported 5, 6 or 7, but I remember picking up 8 on the PS2 when I was in my 20s and the clear parallels to 4 (Draconian race/gear instead of Zenithian, among other smaller bits) and the gameplay elements lifted from 3 (6 sacred orbs to gather over the first half of the game) reminded me so much of my childhood, it was an excellent dose of nostalgia. In more recent years, I've played XI multiple times since it's basically a love letter to the entire series.
When I was a kid playing this. Really hard adventure and all sure, I was super duper into it. Going around on the boat and all that..... eventually I landed on the Original Map and the song started playing. I just stopped, my child eyes open wide. "I, Know this place." and just stood there listening to the old song again, remembering the adventure I had all that time ago in the first game. I started to explore the land, remembered all the 'secrets' of monster spawns etc. not all the same of course... but seeing how much has changed..... villages destroyed and lost.... villages that grew, etc. It was such a heart warming moment in video games for me. If I ever get money to have a game made and stuff, I would make sure to recreate that in a sequel.
THANK YOU FOR DOING THIS! DQ2 often gets overlooked in the series due to its early-installment weirdness and the and allegedly-weak plot, so it's great to see this game getting some love, recognition, and the record being set straight on it.
This one gets unfairly overlooked. I remembered it being good from when I was a kid, but in making this video I got an even deeper appreciation for it.
First off, the "Magic Ant" advert was hilarious. Second, thanks for doing this game, and double for talking to everyone and playing like it's your first playthrough. I love that. Appreciate the hard work you do and look forward to more!
The pseudo-Shakespearean Middle English used in the Western translations of this series... they actually prepared me for studying Chaucer and Shakespeare in college, years and years later. XD
Your ability to keep this video interesting throughout the entire playthrough is _astounding._ I can hardly comprehend how your scripting works, but it is divine!
the soundtrack from this game is indomitable. It definitely set the standard for the rest of the future of the series, IMHO. I especially love the Town theme and the World theme. thanks for covering this game.
Love this series. I got great memories back in 1990 when I was exploring all parts of it's world trying to find any secrets in what I would say was an open world of it's time. The exploring and killing monsters help make it feel less of a grind. So many neat ideas for exploring like the echo flute when trying to get the crests. Great memories!
Dude I love your style. Starting with an in-depth explanation of each games history, then into an in-depth walkthrough with informative and sometimes comical commentary. This took way too long to type lol. Just sharing my appreciation
8:30 What people don't know is that Castle Moonbrooke is actually the fourth castle the king had built in that swamp. The first one sank into the swamp, as did the second. The third one burned down, fell over, then sank into the swamp. The fact that the fourth one stayed up is a testament to the strength of Castle Moonbrooke, in that even after being sacked by monsters, it remains standing. EDIT: 10:17 Looks like you already beat me to the joke. I knew I should've waited to see if you'd referenced it, but I just couldn't resist. Oh, well. I'll leave it here as food for the algorithm.
You are amazing dude! I never played this game but I just enjoy hearing your intro and backstory to each game! You have a really chill vibe and your work helps quite a bit beating some of the most difficult challenges in gaming!
I was born in 82 My father was an rpg fanatic I couldn't get very far in any of them and so my dad, while I was at school would level my characters in all the DQ games. The final fantasies, bard's tales, wizardries etc, so I could play them and just have fun. I'll never forget it.
I love this channel ... Most of the time I just leave it on in the background, so it takes me like 5 watches all the way through to see everything that's important. Keep up the good work!
Hope everything is ok with u and ur family I always look forward to ur videos every week and this week u haven’t uploaded just hope everything is ok with u thanks for the great content.
Still very difficult and very grindy but I have a soft spot for it and think of this game fondly in my childhood! Watching you play it is like hanging out with my friend watching him play. Thank you!
In Dragon Quest 11 there was a cool side quest where you had to find The Prince Of Cannock. You travel through time and space. I forget how many locations you have to go. It's more than 3 that's a for sure. This is awesome Dude. See ya.
Loved both the DW/FF series back in the day. Gotta remember too, that most NES players were kids, and the games retailed at $60 (around $130 in today's dollar), and parents weren't opt to buy a new game every few months (for me it was Christmas and birthdays...until I got a paper route and bought my own 😉) so with FF coming out first, DW2 took a backshelf.
My favorite part of these videos is when I can hear you just barely sigh 😂 I feel that deep down in my soul. Even if you're doing the things you love, there are parts that are still just work.
I've noticed that your voice has gotten more enthusiastic and confident over time. It's nice to see that you're doing something you love and are passionate about. I, too, have a strong appreciation for the NES era because I feel it was a time of game design innovators. Truly a time of art progression in the video game world.
1:35:20 It's really cool that the monsters have both spells and skills in this game. i played all of these as a kid and still go through them at odd interverals dw4 is ground breaking in it has both linear progression and open world functions dw3 has a great character creation bit that keeps the game going something like 9 or so different character types
Loved this game as a kid . It was the last one on the NES I have never beaten it till about 6 years ago at the young age of 38 lol . I was laid off of my job i had for 10 years. While i was off my first month of 3 total till I found a new job. I sat down for 1 week after the family went to bed and i finally beat it. I always made it to the end but couldn't beat the dragon at the end. I cant remember how times i started over thinking maybe i was missing something but I never found anything else I could have done. I love all of your videos keep it up.
Just want to say, always watching your shows is a delight. always look forward to Sunday nights. thanks for putting in all the effort. it shows. cute dog too.
Incredibly great video. Dragon Warrior 2 was always my favorite because I have a lot of memories attached to it. Please don't forget, you can change the Prince and the Princess's names to whatever you want. Highlight your save file, then press left or right and the A button. There are also two extremely rare items in this game- Dragon Potion and Mysterious Hat. The Mysterious Hat actually inspired Satoshi Tajiri to create the Pokemon trading system in the original Pokemon on the GameBoy.
Never seen Dragon Warrior ll. I'm thoroughly impressed by this guide. That lottery exploit just screams old-school. These old classics were often the first of their kind, so it was quite common to see things like that.
I wanted this for my birthday when I was a teenager. My mom said to call around and see how much it was. Every place had it for launch price, though Meijer told me they had it for $20. When we got there, the price was $50 or whatever launch was. My mom was furious, got the manager, and told me and my friend to go look at the games while she went full Karen way before that was an overused term. I don't know what she said, but we walked out of their with DWII for $20!
Omg I love your commentary on this! I also like the info you have on the left side of screen. And I knew I was going to enjoy watching this when I heard a Monty Python quote when Moonbrooke burned down. But obviously the 4th one stayed up as we all know we visit it later in the game. Thank you so much for taking the time to create this videos. I enjoy them very much.
Please, please please Please do one of these for DW4!! You do amazing work, and I would truly appreciate watching you play through my favorite DW game 😁.
I never knew that type of strategy existed in DW2. I love the dragon warrior franchise of games and have been a big fan of them since I was little. Thank you for this informative video.
I absolutely love the Dragon Warrior games, and have since I got my copy of the original Dragon Warrior free with a subscription to Nintendo Power magazine! I always struggled with this one out of the first four (never got to play any of the others until they were ported to Android - didn't own any of the systems except NES and Wii). I used the Game Genie sometimes for my playthroughs, but it's cool to see some of the little tricks that were in the game. Currently, I'm working my way through DQ XI S (slowly, as I don't get to play too often - two kids and two pets), and I'm also trudging through creating a Dragon Warrior RPG based on D&D 5e. Going back through old games can give me some ideas when I get stuck. Excellent guide!
Watching these videos makes me so resentful that my parents gave all my nes games to my cousin. Had about 70 of them that i got in bulk about 2 years before ps1 came out.
Nice! I got this for Xmas in 1990. I got all the way to the end of it but I was never able to beat the last boss, especially after having to run through that boss gauntlet just to reach him in the first place. Looking forward to seeing how you tackle that.
Cool! Nice to see the strats for the original version. I only just finished the GBC version of Dragon Quest II last week. The final cave was more frustrating than challenging though with all the traps and dead ends.
I was so pleased with myself at finishing the first Dragon Warrior game I couldn't wait for the second. I had to admit I was met with some disappointments, such as the main character not using magic, and weapons and armor being in the item inventory which ate up space, but I struggled through this game. Since I did not have a strategy guide like I did with the first there were many things I had to figure out on my own, and just wandering around try find what to go next accomplished some level grinding. I still have my copy with the first quest still saved on it from the very first time I brought it home and turned it on.
I had almost the same experience. Dragon warrior 1 was the first game I ever finished and I felt like a true badass. I had to have part 2 and then 3 and then 4 ! I still remember the excitement of getting part 7. Dq is a big part of my life
Man, I really missed out with these games as a kid. I would see them in store and yet still go for more "mainstream" games. Games played by my mates, KNOWING the quality of the game. Or even trying it myself in-store at the testing units. But I'd never see any of the DQ series anywhere other than the shelf for sale at the same price as games like Zelda or MegaMan and Mario (That's AU$70 to AU$80 just for referance). Heh, well, at least now I can enjoy watching these playthrus and know that there's nothing skipped/missed. Cheers for bringing these classics to us like this, as usual my man.
The soldier that delivers the message at the beginning recently lost his employer’s health coverage, thus why he didn’t seek help at the house of healing.
This is one of those games where I enjoy both the Japanese and western cover art of the game. The American cover art has that crunchy Dungeons and Dragons feel to it that I love.
I played it on the nes and I loved it. Never got around to beating it though since I had to return the game to a friend. I tried playing it again a few times but never got very far. Living vicariously though you playing this.
Man, I hope one day I'll finally get to play all the Dragon Quest games, I've only beaten 11, but I know that these games are all amazing Thanks for always making our weekends incredible, my man! 🐕 I love how the games must be released on weekends, because when they were released on Tuesdays, nobody went to school or work, so they demanded the games be released on Saturdays
@@dukeofthedance8062 I used to do that but with San Andreas with my cousin, we would just play multiplayer and goof around, with the weapons and flying cheat. Good times
Thank you for finally explaining this magic system; for many years, I just didn't bother with attack magic, because it kept missing when I needed it most. Also, I don't know if you did this on purpose, but right after you said, "Before I was so rudely interrupted," there was an ad break for me.
You're truly a masochist for playing this game. I decided once upon a time I was going to run through all of the Dragon Warrior/Quest games. This game broke me. It goes from mediocre easy to constant instant deaths. It got to the point where it wasn't even fun anymore.
I'm currently playing it for the first time on Switch. Love the updated Graphics. I grew up with Dragon Warrior 1 on NES and absolutely love the Dragon Quest series as a whole but I've never played II at all. I'll need to come back to this when I get lost for sure!
I love that you tackle longer games but it’s a double edge sword because I like the detail you put into your videos but it’s bitter sweet to wait until next week for the finish Edit: pt 2 is late. I hope every thing and every one is ok on your end.
I like DQ 2 a lot -- I'm actually playing the mobile version right now. And I personally think DQ 3 is harder, but thank you again for the great coverage.
I remember playing this in high school with my friend. We tag teamed it to beat it during the summer of 91 I think. Most of it was grinding levels. Was great fun.
I remember playing the Gameboy port of this game a lot as a kid. My friend had the gameboy game that was both Dragon Warrior I & II bundled together. I should play that again sometime.
i beat all the dragon warrior games when they released on the nes... those were the days. Soul games would be nothing without Ultima, Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy. I could go on about all the hard-core rpg games on the nes that gave no mercy to those who owned them... but I think I will leave that to this channel and his amazing, detailed journeys into many of our childhood memories. 😅 I love rpg games since age 6! 34 years of video gaming!!!
When I was a kid sometimes I had more fun watching my friends playing games than playing myself. I feel the same here :')
Yup I never played these old RPGs so watching the master play it is the best way!
When I was around 10 my buddy finally beat Aganim in Link to the Past and our enthusiastic high fives resulted in me taking a hard slap that sent me flying. Great moment. An aside, what 4th grader is 6 foot tall? We need to ban high capacity assault children!
Ya I used to watch my bro play FF 7 and 8 on pc for hours
Yep I went from arguing with my bros like "it's my turn!" To "aww naw you can go head!"
Always watching my brother play this
I've played this game probably 20 times and now I'm gonna sit and watch an hour long video about it. Dragon quest will always be the series that defined my childhood
Dayum!
I want to hear YOUR tips!

DQ2 often gets overlooked in the series due to its early-installment weirdness and the and allegedly-weak plot, so it's great to see this game getting some love, recognition, and the record being set straight on it.
Doesn't help when you're followed up by a life-changing conclusion to the trilogy like Dragon Quest 3 is...
I owned and beat Dragon Warrior 1 &3, definitely don't remember this one. Great video, as always!
I own this game but the cartridge save feature no longer works. I tried to replace the battery but that didnt fix it.
We showed up for the walkthrough and deep dive. We stayed for the MagicAnt ad. Link in the description?
My children love Dragon Warrior…this guide will really help them out…Happy Father’s Day everyone!
Happy father's day
Your kids have great taste.
Happy Father's day 🧔♂️
When they play DQ3 and ask "Where do we go", you can smile and say "Wherever you want".
And to you as well!
I loved the whole Magic Ant part around 1:20:00.
Thanks for doing this video! I can't wait until my all time favorite Dragon warrior 4!
the soundtrack from this game is indomitable. It definitely set the standard for the rest of the future of the series, IMHO. I especially love the Town theme and the World theme. thanks for covering this game.

0:07 I cannot tell you how happy it made me to see you include Swords & Serpents with the rest of these legendary titles.
I love seeing what he places with the "today" title.
KarmaJolt, if you keep watching these videos, maybe you'll also eventually be able to beat a video game.

Yes!! I loved your DQ1 video from last year, I've been looking forward to the next one ever since.
I was born in 82
My father was an rpg fanatic
I couldn't get very far in any of them and so my dad, while I was at school would level my characters in all the DQ games.
Been a fan since day 1, the rpg uploads are always the best. No other dog on youtube knows his games better.
Still very difficult and very grindy but I have a soft spot for it and think of this game fondly in my childhood! Watching you play it is like hanging out with my friend watching him play. Thank you!

I love the sass you have put into your videos especially lately. Really adds to flavor and spirit of your gameplay!
Great commentary! Particularly appreciate the low-key Monty Python reference/quote. Cheers!
Loves this first half.
Hilarious Magic Ant advert.
The pupper's name. That's grand.
Thank you for these
My favorite part of these videos is when I can hear you just barely sigh 😂
I feel that deep down in my soul. Even if you're doing the things you love, there are parts that are still just work.
Like reloading to get footage of winning every lottery prize 💀
I've noticed that your voice has gotten more enthusiastic and confident over time. It's nice to see that you're doing something you love and are passionate about. I, too, have a strong appreciation for the NES era because I feel it was a time of game design innovators. Truly a time of art progression in the video game world.
I remember wandering around in this for hours and never getting anywhere
1:35:20
It's really cool that the monsters have both spells and skills in this game. It really laid the groundwork for Dragon Warrior monsters, where there are breath attacks, spells, dances, and miscellaneous skills.
1:40:28 That skill became OddDance, and it has an improved version that absorbs the target's MP.
Thank you for doing DragonQuest 1 and 2! Next, please do DragonQuest 3!
This is perfect. I’ve been meaning to play through all of these. I had a lot of fun with the first one.
i played all of these as a kid and still go through them at odd interverals dw4 is ground breaking in it has both linear progression and open world functions dw3 has a great character creation bit that keeps the game going something like 9 or so different character types
Second one’s great. imo 1 and 2 are the only ones that nail the perfect balance between Adventure game and RPG battling game.
Awww yis!! I was hoping we'd see DW2 soon! My birthday is coming up in a few weeks so thanks for the early birthday present!
I really enjoyed your channel. I hope you decide to come back some day. I'm lost now.
Thank you for doing this game! Can’t wait for Dragon Warrior 3 and 4
Loved this game as a kid .
I’m excited you made this and I’m grateful I got this one last year… this one goes for a bundle today.
The magic ants advertisement pitch was hilarious...lmao.
UCBVG you do an awesome job. I look forward to your videos every week.
Just want to say, always watching your shows is a delight. always look forward to Sunday nights. thanks for putting in all the effort. it shows. cute dog too.
Normally UCBVG airs on Saturdays but on certain occasions he airs on Sunday
Incredibly great video. Dragon Warrior 2 was always my favorite because I have a lot of memories attached to it.

I always get excited when you post up a new one! Thank you for keeping with it, the quality and background for each games is top notch.
The effort put into all of the information displayed is super awesome. Best kind of guide I've seen for any game.
Ok, when does part 2 drop? Been waiting all morning, LOL
Wow the lottery ticket trick was awesome! I never knew that
Never seen Dragon Warrior ll.
I'm thoroughly impressed by this guide.
That lottery exploit just screams old-school.
These old classics were often the first of their kind, so it was quite common to see things like that.
Yay! I was hoping you would do DQ 2. I never beat it myself and am so happy to share the adventure with you!
DragonQuest 3 next please!!!
I agree! I want to see DragonQuest 3!
I wanted this for my birthday when I was a teenager. My mom said to call around and see how much it was. Every place had it for launch price, though Meijer told me they had it for $20. glad you enjoyed it!!
Please, please please Please do one of these for DW4!! You do amazing work, and I would truly appreciate watching you play through my favorite DW game 😁.
Amazing! Love the DQ games, and your coverage is fantastic
Awesome!!!!! Thanks for doing this!! Next up Dragon Warrior 3 and 4!!!!! Thank you so much!!!
OMG!!! Thx so much for doing this..I still hav all 4 of them..but I think this is by far my favorite!! Triumphant work as always!! 🤙🏼🤘🏼
You have quickly become my favorite gaming channel on UA-cam. Keep up the great work!
That TUT trick at the end and then a mini-walkthrough was so good. Great work as always
I never knew that type of strategy existed in DW2. I love the dragon warrior franchise of games and have been a big fan of them since I was little. Thank you for this informative video.
Freakin awesome video, cant wait for part two of this one.
I am happy you are still making these videos. I remember my days grinding for hours on all of these old rpgs.
Thank you so much for posting this! These games are some of my all-time favs! Even made replicas of DQ-1, 2 and 4 in RPG Maker VXAce.
You wouldn't happen to have those in a distributable form, would you? I'd be interested in playing them.
You know when UCBVG doesn't post on Saturday, something big's coming...
Great video as always, i would love to see Mystic Quest on the GB. One of my favorite GB games
Cool! Nice to see the strats for the original version. I only just finished the GBC version of Dragon Quest II last week. The final cave was more frustrating than challenging though with all the traps and dead ends.
I was so pleased with myself at finishing the first Dragon Warrior game I couldn't wait for the second. I still have my copy with the first quest still saved on it from the very first time I brought it home and turned it on.
Eventually you get to some enemies that randomly kill half of your party in a turn. That's where I stopped. Maybe I'll go back again, but ugh.
I had almost the same experience. Dragon warrior 1 was the first game I ever finished and I felt like a true badass. I had to have part 2 and then 3 and then 4 ! I still remember the excitement of getting part 7. Dq is a big part of my life
The wandering is key. The more you wander the more you grind.
Always a comfy day when you post a guide.
Dude, I am just about to put this game in today!!! 🔥🔥🔥
Nice. Now you have a nice helpful guide too!
@Frank Sobotka I have to...I'm doing the whole series in order.
Sunday episodes are always worth the wait, and I'm very happy with the game reveal today. Let's get started! 💖
Thank you so much for your work.
I love the Dragon Quest series. And I love the name of your dog as well. ^^
I absolutely LOVE this game this and willow are my two favorite RPGs for the nes
Amazing upload as always UCBVG! This is easily one of the best retro game channels out there. Your RPG videos are my particular favorites.
Man, I hope one day I'll finally get to play all the Dragon Quest games, I've only beaten 11, but I know that these games are all amazing
Thanks for always making our weekends incredible, my man! 🐕
I love how the games must be released on weekends, because when they were released on Tuesdays, nobody went to school or work, so they demanded the games be released on Saturdays
@@dukeofthedance8062 oh yeah, that series too, the GTA series is incredibly big!
@@dukeofthedance8062 I used to do that but with San Andreas with my cousin, we would just play multiplayer and goof around, with the weapons and flying cheat. Good times
Imo goofing around was always more fun than plot in GTA games.
@@dukeofthedance8062 that's bananas dude! Glad you recovered!
I grew up playing Dragon Warrior 1, and dreaming of 2, but I never had the money to buy it. I thought I was missing the most advanced game ever.
Dragon Warrior 4 is my favorite in the series. Rented that from this hole in the wall place. Man was that fun. The maps and books and all that.
Thank you for finally explaining this magic system; for many years, I just didn't bother with attack magic, because it kept missing when I needed it most. Also, I don't know if you did this on purpose, but right after you said, "Before I was so rudely interrupted," there was an ad break for me.
Super excited about this one! I can't wait to watch this one and play along
You're truly a masochist for playing this game. I decided once upon a time I was going to run through all of the Dragon Warrior/Quest games. This game broke me. It goes from mediocre easy to constant instant deaths. It got to the point where it wasn't even fun anymore.
Your vids are super fun but really it's the dog I look forward to seeing every time, haha.
I'm currently playing it for the first time on Switch. Love the updated Graphics. I grew up with Dragon Warrior 1 on NES and absolutely love the Dragon Quest series as a whole but I've never played II at all. I'll need to come back to this when I get lost for sure!
I love that you tackle longer games but it’s a double edge sword because I like the detail you put into your videos but it’s bitter sweet to wait until next week for the finish
Edit: pt 2 is late. I hope every thing and every one is ok on your end.
A trip down memory lane. My dad loved this series.
I like DQ 2 a lot -- I'm actually playing the mobile version right now. And I personally think DQ 3 is harder, but thank you again for the great coverage.
Wonderful, as always. Great job.
I will sound excited but : YESSSSSSSS!
Its laundry day for me and this will make my day better !
The Game Boy remake compilation cart was my first ever RPG. A lot of my works have been considerably inspired by Dragon Warrior 2 in particular.
Come for the doggo... Stay for the video game nostalgia
I remember playing this in high school with my friend. We tag teamed it to beat it during the summer of 91 I think. Most of it was grinding levels. Was great fun.
Cooking is a way to some peoples hearts, Dragon Warrior is a way to my heart. Brings back memories.
I love this one. I had to watch HC Bailey's lets play to beat it though. Hopefully you do 3 and 4 also. I love your content.
I love game reviewers like U Can Beat Video Games and HCBailly. I love their "dry humor" (not that I'm trying to be offensive calling it that).
@@Dustin_Bins I know exactly what you mean.
How coincidental, I am watching part 1 right now on my FireTV
Had never heard of that "no-encounters going by the name of TUT glitch" and I can't wait to try it - great tip thank you!
One of my favorites! Can't wait to watch part 2
