Comparing the pigmented fineliner brands. An overly critical review

  • I like to pretend that I can measure millimeters to the accuracy of two decimal places LOL.
    In this video I compare the following 0.3mm fineliners:
    The Uni-pin fine line
    Pentel Pointliner
    Faber-Castell pitt artist pen fineliner (which i often mispronounce)
    Sukura pigma micron
    Artline drawing system pen
    Copic Multiliner SP (which is really 0.35 whatever)
    I bought these myself and I don't hold back on my opinion. Enjoy.

    Even tho the micron basically got a hate latter here i wanna say, these are still good pens. For a serious artist one pen type is never enough. You have some for rough things, one for precisson, one for sketch practice and maybe 1 special for stuff you sell. I personally love them for sketching they are cheap (cash wise) and deffiitely worth having.

      The dear Sakura Microns are quite acceptable in terms of quality / price but to tell the truth they do not tolerate much wear and tear. Many artists have given them a greater reputation than they deserve I think, when I bought them I thought they would be wonderful, but no, they are only acceptable . The issue about the gray tone of the ink of some cheap fineliners does not seem to be solved at all, for the same reason that in some cases that absolute black ink is required, it is better to resort to the good old dipping nibs with ink.

  • @AndieArbeit

    As artist for several years i think the lenght of the tips does not makes any change in matter of fineliners, not all the tip is able to draw and also when the point loses its shape the fineliner is kind of useless

    Thank you, Ashsibe! I've been using the "look how fancy I am" Copic Multiliner SP set to ink a drawing, and the only thing that really bugs me is how loose the nib fits into the body--it seems like every other time I touch down on the page there's a squish as the nib pushes back in.

    The 02 Micron is a bit of an anomaly in the Pigma series. It has that kind of odd cone-shaped nib, which is quite different from any of the other pens in the series. Like you said, because of its shape, you can get a lot of line variation depending on how you hold it, which I actually like for some things. All of the other pens in the pigma fine liner series give more consistent lines, so I wouldn’t write off microns just because of the 02.

      Same! If I have to fill up an area I just put the 02 at an angle to where it's thick

    The Faber Castell pen also comes in a XS size, which I think is 0.1. And the crappy grip may be a mandella effect because in my timeline the grip was textured. And finally I was a bit dissapointed at first to see that the Copic pen did not have black ink like Rotring pens, it's more of a very dark grey. Over the years I've come to get used to it and honestly they're less of a hassle than Rotring even if Rotring is my favorite. In any case I would recommend the Sakura Micron, you just had an unfortunate model.

    • @Ashsibe
      @Ashsibe  3 роки тому +12

      I missed the xs Faber-Castell size :)
      Can't beat that black rotring ink! Sometimes I wonder if the ink is not as black because a fine-liner puts the ink down more frugally. When the ink runs out of my Multiliner sp I'm going to put rotring ink in it to see what happens.

      _In any case I would recommend the Sakura Micron, you just had an unfortunate model._
      *@Beans and rice* has comented that the 0.2 size is the only Micron pen that has the very odd tapered nib, for unknown reasons. I'm sure their pens with rounded tips are much smoother!

      @Big-Chungus21 2 роки тому +2

      @@hikikomoriarty thats an incredibly unusual design choice. Although ill say myself theyre plenty black enough. I tend to use the 005 for microns for very small lines and stippling.

    I'm glad you knocked down the Micron a peg. Maybe it trended on Tiktok or something. The lines aren't as good as the Uni. For a light-handed user as myself, I find the Micron gushing out too much ink more than I what I wanted.
    As for the 0.35, I think it's a marketing ploy like with fountain pens where the EF (Extra Fine) nib is marketed as writing a ±0.38mm

    Thank you Ashsibe for this wonderful comparing review. I love the way you rank them. I’ve tried all of them and couple of more. I had a bad experience with micron because of its authenticity. I used it couple of times but once I brought Sakura Micron from my local store & it bleeds so badly when I tried with water color wash. I was so surprised & got confused so then I brought it from other country and understand that there is clone version of it in the market. In my local store its very expensive too. Any ways I have been using fineliner for last 16-17 years, some of them are good & some of them are not so good. None of them are perfect at all. For price point of view its ok to use them often but I cannot rely on them. I would prefer Isograph or rapido graph for constant & precise result. I know for some people it’s expensive & need a lot of patience’s to maintain them but its worth buying them for long term use. Will look forward to checking out more of your videos. Best of luck & keep it up.

      If it's possible to know, I bought a unipin brush recently and I wasn't able to erase the pencil drawing I have underneath without the ink fading. Is this a problem with the paper or my eraser or the ink itself?

    • @Crazytesseract
      @Crazytesseract 3 місяці тому

      @@liaanarusty That is the nature of pigment ink. The particles sit on top of the paper rather than being absorbed. So when you erase, the ink is also removed and fades.

    I got a question for you. These pens are best stored nib side down right, so why does is the nib size info on the cap instead of being on the end? Because of the nib size being on the cap people often tend to store them upside down and gravity will favor the ink to pool at the wrong end of the thing.

    I got a lot of the Sakura microns expecting marvels and I found it too difficult to hold for my big fingers. Also a bit tricky to get consistent lines. I found that the Windsor and Newton fine liners are much comfortable and I loved the black ink. They kind of take a little longer to dry but they are really good. And I also love the faber Castell eco line which is a bit different from the Pitt. I guess the only way to know is testing.

  • @tonyb83
    @tonyb83 Рік тому +1

    You asked @18.30…Why do 0.35 mm pens exist?
    The answer is because: for all standard A0, A1, A2, A3, A4, A5 paper sizes the … WIDTH to HIGHT ratio…. is…. 1 to sq.root.2 . (i.e 1 to 1.414) …. AND ….. Tehnical drawing pens follow the same size-ratio principle. The standard sizes differ by a factor sqrt(2): 2.00 mm, 1.40 mm, 1.00 mm, 0.70 mm, 0.50 mm, 0.35 mm, 0.25 mm, 0.18 mm, 0.13 mm. So after drawing with a 0.35 mm pen on A3 paper and reducing it to A4, you can continue with the 0.25 mm pen. (ISO 9175-1). I hope that helps. Tony

    I must say, though, despite the price, the Copic probably wins as far as beauty and function. It just seems to write smoother, and also, even though you do have to buy an entire cartridge it is cheaper than replacing the entire pen. You could look at it that way. I think there is a reason that artists really love the Copic alcohol markers. They are top notch quality.

    Hi to all from Madrid, Spain!
    I know I'm a bit late to the party but I just saw this video today.
    Just wanted to add that you can refill with any India Ink of your choice the Fineliners. Can't be sure if all of them (I haven't seen some yet, like the Pitt ones), but I know for a fact that the UniPin, Staetdler (I was surprised that it was not included in the analysis), the Pentel and the Micron can be refilled.
    You just need to take out the metal point (using an X-Acto blade to extract the metal tip) and with an Eyedropper or a blunt serynge refill them inside the body with your preferred ink.
    Don't overflow them, though... usually 8-10 drops of ink will last a pretty long while, and you can continue refilling them (they don't leak any ink with this procedure either).
    Most important is to take care of the nibs, using a light pressure when drawing/writing to extend the life of the tip.
    And if ink flow is a problem (dry ink inside the nib) the actual nib (tip) can be extracted too and just by submerging it in alcohol for a few minutes (5-10 mins - the longer the cleaner it will be - but don't over do either) should dissolve any dried ink and ink flow should return.
    Once the felt tip is gone... that's when you'll need to buy a new one.
    Hope this helps!
    Cheers from Sunny Spain!
    😁👍😎

    Thankfully, someone agrees with me pigma micron fineliners are really not great fineliners. I never thought the nib is rounded. It feels a whole lot more angular and I hate that it’s so short, you tend to hit the metal bit. I’m surprise it’s priced higher than the Faber Castell. I like the fact that FC uses India ink. The pigment just seem to be more appealing. Have you tried the Molotow fineliner?

    I have been using a Rotring isograph, which is a great pen, very satisfying, only until it stops working.
    I've had the pen for around 2½ years and I'm already on the 4th or nib, and I'm becoming fed up with it, the last two nibs I tried everything for them to start working but because they are so delicate I couldn't get them to work. The Nib is ⅓ of the price of a new pen, so the money I spent replacing nibs, I could have bought a new one. So for a Pen which is non-disposable, it's not really a pen I would recommend.
    So I have gone back to disposable and my go to finelines are the Uni Pin, which are almost as good as the Pigma Micron but a little bit cheaper and imo last longer.

    Yes, smooth pens actually provide more grip, since sweat adheres to the smooth plastic very well.
    I noticed that Faber-Castell instruments tend to be not ergonomic at all. I got a Faber-Castell Ambition fountain pen as a gift. It's worth 140 USD, and I hate it.
    Microns are NOT quality. They were designed to be a cheap alternative to technical pens. Sakura never changed the design, since Microns are so phenomenally popular.
    Copic has the grubbiest little hands. I do believe the cartridge can be refilled with a syringe, though.

    The Pigma Micron fineliner is a complete joke and lasts for literally 2 days of drawing. I don’t understand its popularity, maybe people haven’t tried other ones and therefore don’t know better and just keeps on buying new ones every 2 days.
    Coptic multi liner SP IS NOT reusable!
    The nib wears off extremely fast and the ink lasts equally as short as the Pigma Micron.
    And you cannot put your own ink in the cartridge, trust me I’ve tried it thinking i would save money. The ink you put in simply doesn’t come out of the nib.

    Hello from Dubai.
    The Uni and the Staedtler pens never dissipointed me!! :^)
    Also they were the ones available for me to but very early.
    Later in life I tried the Copic SP, and it is very good too.
    I also tried one Sakura Micron pen, 0.3, and it was ok..
    But I think I'll stick to the Uni and Staedtler. :o)
    I think i'll try the others. :^)

    The artline drawing system is a lot cheaper than micron or uni pin in my country, more than half price of the micron or unipin.

    This was a great video until we arrived at the Sakura hit piece at 8:30.
    Mate, that pen is defective. I’ve had hundreds of Sakura pens, not a single one ever did what yours is doing.

    Hahahahaha. “Inkjet printer of the pen world” 🤣🤣🤣how true. It should only be called refillable if you could drip droplets of ink into it like the Copic brushnib alcohol color pens that Manga artists use. I have the entire set by the way. If you have to replace the whole cartridge, to me, it should not be called refillable. It should be called the inkjet printer of the pen world instead

    The tip on my micron pens look exactly the same as the Uni pin ones. Yours must be fake pens 👍👍

      I bought the micron ( and the rest of these pens) from a store that only sells genuine products. My current theory is that I bought a lemon.

      *@Beans and rice* has comented that the 0.2 size is the only Micron pen that has the quarrelsome tapered nib, for unknown reasons.

    Microns sucks! Never had one that didn't dry out before its time. Plus the line is really NOT consistent, choppy at best because they keep drying out way too soon!

    If you had tried to actually draw with the Micron, you would've been even more disgusted. That odd nib shape continually scrapes fibers up off of the paper that then get stuck in the nib. Even using drawing paper made specifically for pens! The fibers sticking out of the nib often effect your line, fraying it out, and always eventually clog the nib entirely. Long before the pen runs out of ink.

      I used to write in a diary for a whole year with a Uni-Pin. I tried using this Micron. Only lasted for a few months as it became a awful experience. I think they named themselves after a small unit of measurement to represent the amount of quality and research they put in their pens.
