haha you should honestly get a nice fountain pen instead of those rapidographs. And you can get a sick fountain pen for your birthday like a pilot fermo. they are way more artistic than those plain rapidographs , you can get various line weights with fountain pens. Peter Han bought the pilot fermo not too long ago, one of the greatest illustrators concept designers of the world he has a video with it on his channel. and happy birthday :)
I had a set of Micron's before some thieving artist stole them out of my bookbag when I was in high school. They leaked ink like a sieve though, so not a big loss. I like your message that you don't need any special supplies to get started. Not many other Artists are willing to admit that. Your blindfolded doodle also had a hidden message I think. You drew something blindfolded that looked like a chaotic mess but then you took the blindfold off and tweaked it until you had something wonderful, showing that all mistakes can be fixed. Thanks a lot for the lessons!
Ecco Pigment Fine Liners from Fabre Castell are my favourite. I love the shape of the grip, the metal around the felt is very strong and sturdy, and they write so smoothly. Compared to even other Fabre Castell pens I find that they don’t smear or smudge as much.
That blue @ 8:23 appealed to me. In fact, it is safe to say am more obsessed with pens, research and obtaining the best paper for the job at hand and paint markers than i have ever been with any of my exes. I love (certain brands) of every writing tool available for purchase.
Before I discovered fountain pens, the Bic Cristal was my favorite. The 1.6 bold tip was like my holy grail. I was always on the hunt for them. I still keep a few of them around.
what an awesome video. extemely entertaining, had me laughing out loud multiple times 😂 your sarcasm is wonderful and I think I speak for most people when I say listening to you talk is as entertaining as watching you make fabulous art. 😁
These aren't lining pens, but glage paint/gel pens are super fun. My middle school used to sell them during the gel pen craze and years later I still use them. The pen allows paint to flow out like ink or if you like in globs it's so satisfying. And another plus is it smells like paint too so yeah!
I've used both the Sakura Microns and the Staedtler, and like them both pretty much equally, except that the Staedtler tends to have more of a "felt pen" feel in the larger nib sizes. They do, however lay down a lot of ink when you're filling in shapes. The largest I have is an 08, and I love it. The ink is consistently dark and the li especially don't get "scratchy" when it's almost empty. They just stop working. Just my two cents' worth.
JUST found this channel and am SUPER happy you have a video like this. I cannot draw to save my life but the last 3 videos of yours I've watched (Flipping through your sketch book, the glass pen you got a week ago and the PENBBS 469 view) I absolutely want to try to get into even attempting to draw, again. Hey Peter you're awesome!!! Thanks so much for this vid, it's just the info I needed. I'm getting so mad at my pitt pens, they're the pitts. I'm going to try the steadtlers next. well there's definitely a difference between a $3 pen and a $30 pen. but at some point, the amount of money you spend on a fountain pen isn't worth how much better it is (probably in the hundreds). personally i would reccomend a lamy safari as they are pretty cheap for the quality you get. if you want to know more about fountain pens, i'd reccomend goulet pens' channel (i'm not affiliated in any way though lol).
Just popping back in this video. I wanted to check out some different pens out. I’ve been using the .35 rOtring isograph really nice 👍 that’s thanks to you Peter. Good looking out
Peter, have you tried feathers yet? ^_^ they are good with ink and have a little reservoir to hold the ink after you cut the tip at an angle....... and then use the tip 'upside down' on the page as it flows better than the right way up
Loved Pigma Microns, but they don't do well in airplanes at altitude, one of my favorite places to draw. Nothing more frustrating than a big drop of ink on your drawing and ink all over your hands while traveling by air. Staedtlers and Faber Castells have never leaked in me during air travel so I've stocked up on those for now.
Very informative. I've noticed that no one actually mentions the Rotring Tikky Graphic pens. I have found them most useful so far. One of my most popular art pieces on any art site has been entirely made out of pencil (for the undersketch) and multi-colored Bic pens, so yeah, you don't need the fancy stuff to make good art. iv had some fun withe the new sharpie s-jells i took the ink cartridge out of one and put it in a depleated shaffer pen i got at a thrift store and its one of my favrits.
in my experience the sakura microns used to be great but i think they changed the ink because the newer ones i have smear with the prismacolor/copic markers the copic multiliner pens i bought since have not smeared with marker
I love pens for writing, and saw the way the Rotrings worked and thought "Man, I would love to use those, I bet they feel so nice!" And then I saw the actual price, and noped on out of there. I'll stick to my Pilot pens for writing, thanks. haha.
Uni-ball signo broad white gel pens are about 6$ at my local crafts shop (Michaels) While microns cost about 10$ For a set of 3. They make different sets but each micron is about 3$, wether it's a thin or a brush tip.
Some of these black pigment liners contain ink that turns greyish as it dries. There's only a few brands that give you near pitch black lines (from what I tried out, I believe pigma, rotring and especially faber castell remain quite dark, uni-ball and staedtler were pretty annoyingly pale when I tried them). It sucks sometimes when you're using different brands for a big drawing, the difference between inks is too visible unless you scan your drawing and adjust the contrast...
my current favorite pen is the pilot precise v5 (it might be v-something, im pretty sure however its the v5). the tip is a good width, the ink has a nice blackness too it and doesn't show up too blue. only complaint has to be that the ink does run out pretty quickly, i can get maybe 3 - 4 drawing out of each one, however there are 4 packs available.
If you like the rapidograph tech pens, check out Faber-Castell Techmate TG1 set of pens. I don't believe they make them anymore but you can find them affordably on ebay. The pen casing is a very sick shade of green, feels great on your fingers. It draws like a dream, very smooth.. Plus if you worry rapidographs drying out.. the TG1's have this fuckin awesome part of the cap that screws off revealing a reservoir that you drip a couple water droplets into after use. Under the reservoir is a tiny piece of paper that changes color to indicate when it might need another drop of water. Don't get why the drip/moistening element hasn't stuck around in drafting pen design its genius
microns are great! but i have to say the faber castell xs black is less smudgy. even under modpodge. and the nib is a bit sturdier so my rough hand doesnt wreck them so quickly.
I'm not a huge fan of felt tip pens, I like drawing with ballpoint pens. Bic pen ink has a shiny and slightly purple look to it. I like using Pilot G2 pens because the ink comes out looking like sharpie ink minus the bleeding through and the smell.
Great video! Interestingly the size scale is different between the copic and micron brands (copic uses mm, whilst micron uses inches I believe). But they both work really well.
