I just realised that I have more addictions than Ive thought I had. Im addicted to feeling smart, being wise, talking about these things and Im also addicted to lots of other things(drugs too, not in any severe way though but bad enough).Gabors books have truly enlightened me and this seminar enlightened me further.
Sounds dangerously like your first 3 addictions you mentioned;) Just kidding! Sometimes humor helps alot to deal with serious topics! I have compassion and understanding for you. I hope you keep on understanding and unleashing your attachments one by one.
one of the quotes of Jesus that he talks about, he only gives you the gist of... it is a quote that is far too wise and beautiful to only get the gist of, and it has gotten me through so many crises i cant count. so, i wanted to share the whole quote in its entirety exactly as it is written... i hope it touches at least some of you the way it has me. "If you Bring Forth what is Within you, what is within you will Save you. If you do Not Bring Forth what is Within you, what is within you will Destroy you." --Jesus of Nazareth
Yes I have come across this quote - it means to me that we must not reject or repress what we don't like within ourselves - when I have a "bad" dream I say - welcome into the light, thank you.
The idea of "being still" is the one, ultimate truth I have found in life that brings a person to the place of peace. The place of still, peaceful, oneness with everything. Your breathing slows. You do not thinks thoughts anymore...You just....ARE. Learning how to just simply sit with myself, and just BE was the most amazing thing I ever learned. It was so incredible that once I learned how to just BE, I was no longer depressed. I was no longer anxious. And not just in that moment...nearly all moments now. I dont even have to try anymore to get to that place, I just go there. If I notice myself feeling anxious, giddy, wanting wanting wanting, needing this or that, etc, I go to that place. It centers me. It grounds me in the real world. The one that my mind covers up and lies about so often to me.
Beautifully put. I would like to know more, does one get to the place of “being still” by physically being still? and just letting go of the craving to give in to distractions, and ultimately facing yourself in that moment? Whatever’s going on in your mind. Or do you mean something akin to something like a mindfulness present moment awareness? I’m really curious, as a practitioner and follower of Buddhism, meditation such as metta and vipasanna. I’m interested in your explanation and want to figure out what you mean. Thank you.
@brandondarby5821 Well I know I did begin my journey to peace by literally sitting still. Just with myself, my thoughts, no distractions, no fidgeting.

I'm 37yrs old and I'm so glad i found Dr Gabor Matè, your books and lectures and the way you talk and present yourself is amazing 👏🏼 You definitely deserve a Noble Peace Price! I have so much respect for this guy.❤
i like that he was vulnerable and open about his own experience about his recent several weeks of being in a deep funk. That really makes it even more relatable and make me realise that WE ARE ALL REALLY IN THIS TOGETHER AS HUMANITY. This is a human struggle, not an isolated, individual struggle. Good talk. Thank you.
@Lisa J We are not an individual, the interconnectedness of being is who we are. Evolution is based on the extension of generosity. That is not my quote, wish I knew who said that🌈
I deeply admire his humility when he says "How can I talk or give you that when I have not been there" and then he actually gives us something as deep.
It is a shame there has been a large amount of disinformation spread about Dr Gabor Mate's work (such as psychology today, which coincidently is the first thing which appears when his name is googled) I think he is spot on about the trauma but the current societal paradigm defines trauma as some big event that happened to a child however, it can be defined as anything really which leads a child to maladaptive behaviour in their adult life (such as many small events). The entire definition of trauma needs to be clarified and broadened widely. Most people don't seem to understand what it is and it is their ignorance on the matter that brings about criticism of his theories
the funny (sad?) thing about that Psych Today takedown is that if you watch the author in interviews, he seems miserable and almost seems like a prime candidate for someone with suppressed childhood trauma. Additionally, I looked further into the study that he mentioned in that PsychToday article, and watched interviews with the conductor of that study -- let's just say I was uninspired and unimpressed. On the other hand, my intuition about Gabor Mate is that he is hitting on some profound, tragically-unspoken truths. Honestly if I had to ascribe anyone as my "hero" it would probably be him.
I saw that article last month and was bothered by it...I was like who is this dude?! I as well took it with a grain of salt. Thank you for posting this (5 years ago..lol), I thought I was the only one who was irritated.
For me, loving yourself is like not being in conflict with yourself, not being in constant opposition with yourself, being at peace with who and what you are. It can be quite difficult to attain this state, though.
I have watched this lecture over and over since my breakdown in 2019. I always learn something more every time I listen. Thank you Dr Mate. You are a treasure for seeing the deep truth so clearly.
This is an exceptional talk, he moves through it so effortlessly and beautifully. , His quotes from Joan of Ark, Camus, Buddhism. He speaks for All of us., And we get it, don't we? His honesty we recognise in ourselves. Sublime X
I had that experience with the trees when I was about 10 years old, and I had never taken Ayahuasca or any mind altering drugs. But I knew from that point onwards that trees were beings that wanted to communicate and felt empathy!
This video was almost an hour and it didn’t even feel like it. It felt less than. I only recently discovered Gabor Mate and I feel seen and guided listening to him. For that, I am grateful.
I focus...and then refocus on what I can do that brings me joy, it brings me out of depression. What makes me feel good... I think about it... what I will do that makes me feel good. I imagine Simple little things like having a nice relaxing shower, tidy my room, organizing my clothes. Also I try to only keep things that I really enjoy. Good feelings, baby steps.
I did a lot of speaking and liked it. I realized it was like an addiction. I let it go, and focused in another area. In retirement, I took up making art. I gave all my work away. I let it go. Now I live in another country with a large family that will not even kill an ant, no exsggeration. My family is very beautiful and I am learning.
"The very culture that we live in denies that there's truth, makes people hungry, hurts people, leaves them isolated, therefore empty, therefore wanting satisfaction from the outside, therefore addicted, and then it creates all these products, and all these activities, and all these cultural diversions to fill the very emptiness that it creates. And then they say, "That selfishness is the nature of human beings." And there's the complete circle of the ideology." 47:25
So greatful for gabor mates studies and work so we may be free to study behind him and therefor be free to "catch onto" our real lives..every talk he has is priceless towards our advancement in being whole and finding peace within befor passing on..i treasure his works..

I just discovered him a month or so ago. I just love listening to him. He has such a gentle, but wise, and real persona. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and insights with us.
I just found Gabor Mate these days.... and he changed my thinking, understanding and hopefully feeling. This came at the right time for me. Many blessings!
I wish Gabor Mate's talks got translated so that many more people get to hear them. So few people have this combination of competence and the balls to be honest about how things are really like.
I can't justify it. I was just plain wrong, reacting to the book's title rather than its content. Even Dawkins, of course, has acknowledged how his title may be confusing: "In the foreword to the book's 30th-anniversary edition, Dawkins said he "can readily see that [the book's title] might give an inadequate impression of its contents" and in retrospect thinks he should have taken Tom Maschler's advice and called the book The Immortal Gene." Still, the mistake is my responsibility.
This apology is so YOU, so don't be hard on yourself. Whatever Dawkins claimed to have thought about, post-hoc, and tried to correct in his forward, his UA-cam videos show him in real time as a very shallow, egoistic, and mean-spirited man. And there ... I have just demonstrated how mean-spirited I can be, but in my defense, it was made in the spirit of defending you from yourself. Love you, mate ... uh ... I mean Maté. 😂
Here at minute 20:38 I'm just overwhelmed by this man's beauty of mind-he speaks of how people being benefitted by Aids or cancer by their own admission. It goes against the grain of our whiner-type culture with an extremely gentle integrity. He claims to have an unspiritual mind, but unbeknownst to himself he is spiritual beyond most.
dr.Gabor your vibrations reach my soul. my inner dilmas and weaknessess with a great hope to reach the state of possible human loving myself and others. Thank you.

when said "addiction is not a person, nobody is an addict" he means the very essence of a human. in our essence we are pure human beings.but to once again become one, we must face our flaws inside us - inside our corrupted nature, which is just "a part" of a human's pure essence.
This cancer has been the best thing happened to me or the addiction. Its the necessity to love themselves or live in the alienation as we are. He's a genius. Wow. It's all awakening, it's all God's given gifts 🙏🦋👌🌺🌹😘😘😘😘
Great speech! Thank you so much! I am having spiritual experiences, it is most beautiful thing that could happen in my life! I love Eckhart, Adyashanti and other spiritual teachers but it's true that someone who doesn't experience inner self naturally will have no clue how to even practice it and the mind will trick on you again. For me it is a blessing in my life journey. This blessing will come to everyone "sooner or later".. . Wishing you all best and much love!!! :)
19:25 - "All the problems we have is because we don't WANNA grow up" We grow up with supportive and caring parents who nurture us as we explore and grow, like birds in a nest till we are ready to fly. If we didn't get that support, and got kicked out before we were ready, we feel incomplete and want that completion - so - we DO want to grow up, we just want to grow up right, with what we should have healthily had. We want catharsis and have our world be the right way. Thats what we want to grow up.
I'm only at 10:00 but I can tell you this . . and it's only my experience. I "have been" addicted - alcohol free from July 14, 2020 AND I have experienced/known "who I am ' both addicted and not addicted. I am "one". I am not a different person because of my addiction or instead of my addiction. I would identify as having an overactive brain and having "lived in it" disconnecting from emotional experience. I have the awareness of when I am "selfless" and when I am not and I can move from one to the other WITH thoughts. I benefit very much from breathing, mindfulness and music in quieting the cacophony. The healing power DOES reside within us all. It is all our gifts that make us who we are. Addiction was but one. It also connects me to others with whom I now relate on an emotional level.
19:56 Thanks Dr Gabor Mate for answering a question I wanted the answer to for a long time. Why does life give us harder lessons if we fail the easier ones, didn't make sense before, I used to think - if we can't learn easier lessons, we aren't gonna learn harder ones.
At 34:09 He says "In order to get over addiction you have to actually have the courage to look at how things actually are inside here.34:40 When somebody says I'm so and so and I''m an alcoholic. Something in me does not quite like that language, because the language identifies the person with the experience, and says I am that experience.Well you're not that experience! Addiction is not a person.Addiction is not who you are. When you say I'm an Addict.Nobody is an addict. That's not who you are.
By admitting-you are recognizing where the pain comes from. When you can recognize you can start the process of surrender. No, it is not you, but it is a little piece that requires recognition.
Our lives mainly resolve around making money. We cannot ever hope to realize our potential when almost all of our time is spent extrinsically motivated. First you have to become financially independent. Then you can live your life intrinsically motivated, your journey will begin, and maybe if you are lucky you can reach enlightenment. And even that is not the end stage. After this period of calmness, the storm will pick you up.
Gabor is truly a gift to the world and his pure honest humanity lights the way for a better tomorrow. Thank you Gabor, you answer so many questions that I’ve had. Your connection to the Truth is so refreshing. Please keep speaking because I will keep listening!!
It is better to assume that there is no such thing as spiritual seeking than to want to be sure that there is such a thing. I am quite enlightened. You can listen to what I have just said. I have helped you out here. I don`t need a reply.
My Fake Name ... enlightenment is the "see" of awareness in which everything exists... It is eternal... and, we are all dying to awaken to IT... GOD BLESS EVERYONE BLESS EVERYTHING ALWAYS AMEN...
The way he explains addiction is such a new concept for me. The answer to all our struggles lies within not the external. As within So without. Peace, love, blessings and healing to All.
YES!! The nugget is there: "You can only get there through the body." AMEN. So wonderful to have Gabor as a fellow pilgrim on this journey. Wahe Guru!!
Language is a spell. It forms reality as it’s used. We reinforce the strength of these spells and propagate the realty it dictates It’s subtle but effective and because it’s integral to organized society, it’s widespread. On large scales, our shared social contract perpetuates collective imagery…holding together the substructure of society.
I’ve listened to this talk several times. If you’ve listened to it once, you didn’t get it. Trust me. This must be the sixth time for me and I still have moments of understanding. If you’re above average intellect you’ve still missed a lot.
I don't really believe that you are to "sit" still to get out of your mind. I do it all the time throughout the day as I filter all the perceptual stimuli I receive from the world. Because I am too sensitive to these, I had to learn to ignore them. I actually do it without any effort if you can believe it. I don't care what people think and I conduct myself with integrity and compassion. Jiddy Krishnamurti seems to make this sort of thing very clear & agree: Why stop or wait til the day is over?

one of the quotes of Jesus that he talks about, he only gives you the gist of... it is a quote that is far too wise and beautiful to only get the gist of, and it has gotten me through so many crises i cant count. so, i wanted to share the whole quote in its entirety exactly as it is written... i hope it touches at least some of you the way it has me.
"If you Bring Forth what is Within you, what is within you will Save you. If you do Not Bring Forth what is Within you, what is within you will Destroy you." --Jesus of Nazareth
n/a n/a 💖 thank you. Authentic Self!
n/a n/a: I love that quote and have never come across it before. I will remember it ... thank you.
Yes I have come across this quote - it means to me that we must not reject or repress what we don't like within ourselves - when I have a "bad" dream I say - welcome into the light, thank you.
I have never heard of that before.it feels so true and beautiful, where is it in the bible please? Thank you x
Thank you so much. Peace and love.
@brandondarby5821 and the mindfulness awareness of the present came naturally from it.

I think he just explained to you, why you are not an alcoholic
good morning Miss Heather
What are you wearing right now?
Hello and bravo to you, Heather. Just remember you are so much more than an alcoholic.

Wow 👏🏻
I'm 37yrs old and I'm so glad i found Dr Gabor Matè, your books and lectures and the way you talk and present yourself is amazing 👏🏼
You definitely deserve a Noble Peace Price! I have so much respect for this guy.❤
Gabor Mate is a man who understands egoism and addiction intimately because he’s lived it. And he keeps his ideas beautifully simple.
He is still living it...far from healed. Idk why ppl are so impressed with this guy 😮
i like that he was vulnerable and open about his own experience about his recent several weeks of being in a deep funk.
That is not my quote, wish I knew who said that🌈
HE ALSO HAS THAT VERY SADDEN FACE AND A LOW VOICE, who makes us want help him. TRIGGER FOR UNMET “ needs “ of our own. 🥲
I deeply admire his humility when he says "How can I talk or give you that when I have not been there" and then he actually gives us something as deep.
It is a shame there has been a large amount of disinformation spread about Dr Gabor Mate's work (such as psychology today, which coincidently is the first thing which appears when his name is googled)
I think he is spot on about the trauma but the current societal paradigm defines trauma as some big event that happened to a child however, it can be defined as anything really which leads a child to maladaptive behaviour in their adult life (such as many small events).
The entire definition of trauma needs to be clarified and broadened widely. Most people don't seem to understand what it is and it is their ignorance on the matter that brings about criticism of his theories
he's too much of a threat because he's so spot on
Absolutely agree, (You are spot on) this is why the disinformation / demonization. @@rafaelmarchanteangulo4582
the funny (sad?) thing about that Psych Today takedown is that if you watch the author in interviews, he seems miserable and almost seems like a prime candidate for someone with suppressed childhood trauma.
Thank you for posting this (5 years ago..lol), I thought I was the only one who was irritated.
thanks for the reply :)

Loving this for you🎉

Good on you !
I like how real he is

EllaParaQuien El Sol Brilla ... really? ...
A Mexican told me that once, although I must admit it look me over a decade to figure out, what exactly that meant haha, just being honest.
He is real and the best
I love u Gabor Maté
This amazing being picked me up hitch Hiking 4 years on Hornby Island in British Columbia.

I imagine Simple little things like having a nice relaxing shower, tidy my room, organizing my clothes. Also I try to only keep things that I really enjoy. Good feelings, baby steps.
Kim Biro I wish you the best Kim. How are you doing today ?
@@kimberleyb4002 YES, you're on the right track.
I love Dr. Maté's lectures. Write these lessons on your soul. This lecture is nearly 10 years old, and the material is timeless.

I feel everyone needs to take a class in high school or college called "gabor mate works and wonders"...this way we can enlighten the people of the world to rethink the world and set it in a better safer path
Yep. But humans are more than capable of getting out of that ideology. You just have to reject it. Just be.
This was brilliant wisdom
I just discovered him a month or so ago. I just love listening to him. He has such a gentle, but wise, and real persona. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and insights with us.
Reconnecting to your inner godliness, not to outside attachments.
Addictions are escapism, when we're not addicted we're enlightened xx 😘
I can't justify it. I was just plain wrong, reacting to the book's title rather than its content. Even Dawkins, of course, has acknowledged how his title may be confusing: "In the foreword to the book's 30th-anniversary edition, Dawkins said he "can readily see that [the book's title] might give an inadequate impression of its contents" and in retrospect thinks he should have taken Tom Maschler's advice and called the book The Immortal Gene." Still, the mistake is my responsibility.
What the funk are you even chatting about ??? Dawkins lacks Spirit.
Liam Brereton ... only because of his relationship to Dawk-ins... !!!
Gabor have you read something about Taoism? I think you will find very helpful and I would like to know what do you think about it
Are you really Gabor Mate?
Think this is one of the best lectures I’ve ever heard in my life. I’m speechless, and that’s not easy to achieve for someone as garrulous as myself!
44:00 it's difficult to think outside the box because thinking IS the box
Who's the Michael Braun who's quoted to have said this? I can't find him!
I love this guy's honesty and openness.
dr.Gabor your vibrations reach my soul. my inner dilmas and weaknessess with a great hope to reach the state of possible human loving myself and others. Thank you.

@@claudiacaceres2580 The reward is high. You learn a lot, and its not going to destroy you its going to save you and heal you. Allow yourself to feel. Dont be afraid, just be thankful. Its a gift. Not learning or growing is much worse than surrendering to the information that comes your way disguised as pain. It is only perceived as pain before the information is realised. The joy of the gift is much greater than the pain of the change. Just let it take you over. And remember the most important thing. The energy of spirit. With all respect, I ve heard that if you identify with anything you are bound to the ego, even spirit, because its a mental construct. Now I know spirit is real but its beyond description and duality so its beyond good vs bad beyond pleasure vs pain. I traveled once , a dusty road,
Extending from my sight.....
Young and strong, full of life,
I journeyed with delight.....
The rain it came, washed away,
The path I had desired....
Searching left, spying right,
Soon finding myself mired....
With bliss at stake, decisions made,
To take another course....
Need take a chance, become not idle,
Dwell not on remorse.....
Trials arose , on my sojourn,
That kept me from my path....
Fate convened, to set me straight,
Lest I should feel its wrath....
Suns return, healing warmth,
Drying mud from feet.....
Feeling stronger, ever lighter,
Leaping from defeat.....
Lifes ups and downs, ins and outs,
Lead us not in vain....
Joy and love, not all there is,
We must embrace our pain.......
Beautiful poem.

Gabor as much as you say you're not living your own knowledge and understanding regarding mental health, l think maybe you're not living them ALL the time, as is reasonable, yet just noticing that you're not living them is actually living them.
thanks so much for authenticity sharing both your education and your vulnerability
Compassion for self..is critical..but also for others.
It's one and the same thing
when said "addiction is not a person, nobody is an addict" he means the very essence of a human. in our essence we are pure human beings.but to once again become one, we must face our flaws inside us - inside our corrupted nature, which is just "a part" of a human's pure essence.
This cancer has been the best thing happened to me or the addiction. Its the necessity to love themselves or live in the alienation as we are. He's a genius. Wow. It's all awakening, it's all God's given gifts 🙏🦋👌🌺🌹😘😘😘😘
Wow.. Just wow. What great wisdom and perspective that he offers us.
what a beautiful and profound speaker
Most excellent! So much condensed wisdom, humor, and encouragement in one segment. Seems long. But passes quickly. Much love!
19:56 Thanks Dr Gabor Mate for answering a question I wanted the answer to for a long time. Why does life give us harder lessons if we fail the easier ones, didn't make sense before, I used to think - if we can't learn easier lessons, we aren't gonna learn harder ones.
Gabor is really deep and funny at times, incredibly open, easy to listen and understand I think I am addicted LOL
He really makes it easy to understand my humanity
Great talk! One of the few people talking about spiritual seeking as an addiction, which I can totally relate to!

Language is a spell. It forms reality as it’s used. We reinforce the strength of these spells and propagate the realty it dictates
It’s subtle but effective and because it’s integral to organized society, it’s widespread.

You are awesome!
I need to listen to one of your talks every day. Sometimes I listen to 3 or 4 a day. Your voice is very soothing and nonjudgmental.
Thank you
Very few get what's wrong with people and the world in general. This man does and it should be people like him in government fixing problems.
