So true how the drs don't believe the answer is inside of us we wonder why addiction has gone on for years we also know when we aren't getting the help we need this is why I respect this man because he speaks from truth and compassion but how can we get help from drs when they probably have experienced some kind of trauma themselves and have not did the internal work as dr.Gabor has

Alexandria Madison that's the problem he faces himself. I'd say he is your "attachment" from the outside, just as his ego is for him and most of us. Just as any substance, relationship, object or idea we hang on to instead of being still and present with ourselves. :)

After numerous therapies without any impact on me, the lectures of Dr. Maté opened myself up for life. After decades of suffering and blaming myself of being weak I now can understand. I can understand myself, my parents, my fucked up life as of now. I can forgive me and I can forgive them. It is like stepping out into the sun light. I barely recognize myself. Thank you so much, Dr. Maté.

We all let go of all things of this world when we are dying. I witnessed this myself when my husband chose to die at home. Granted, it was a very traumatic experience for me from which I shall never recover BUT I UNDERSTAND WHY a person must let go of this world. Otherwise"crossing over" is a MUCH HARDER thing to do.

The idea of "being still" is the one, ultimate truth I have found in life that brings a person to the place of peace. The place of still, peaceful, oneness with everything. Your breathing slows. You do not thinks thoughts anymore...You just....ARE. Learning how to just simply sit with myself, and just BE was the most amazing thing I ever learned. It was so incredible that once I learned how to just BE, I was no longer depressed. I was no longer anxious. And not just in that moment...nearly all moments now.
I dont even have to try anymore to get to that place, I just go there. If I notice myself feeling anxious, giddy, wanting wanting wanting, needing this or that, etc, I go to that place. It centers me. It grounds me in the real world. The one that my mind covers up and lies about so often to me.

    • @brandondarby5821
      @brandondarby5821 Рік тому +1

Beautifully put. I would like to know more, does one get to the place of “being still” by physically being still? and just letting go of the craving to give in to distractions, and ultimately facing yourself in that moment? Whatever’s going on in your mind. Or do you mean something akin to something like a mindfulness present moment awareness? I’m really curious, as a practitioner and follower of Buddhism, meditation such as metta and vipasanna. I’m interested in your explanation and want to figure out what you mean. Thank you.

    • @SolidSiren
      @SolidSiren Рік тому +1

It is a shame there has been a large amount of disinformation spread about Dr Gabor Mate's work (such as psychology today, which coincidently is the first thing which appears when his name is googled)
I think he is spot on about the trauma but the current societal paradigm defines trauma as some big event that happened to a child however, it can be defined as anything really which leads a child to maladaptive behaviour in their adult life (such as many small events).
The entire definition of trauma needs to be clarified and broadened widely. Most people don't seem to understand what it is and it is their ignorance on the matter that brings about criticism of his theories

the funny (sad?) thing about that Psych Today takedown is that if you watch the author in interviews, he seems miserable and almost seems like a prime candidate for someone with suppressed childhood trauma. Additionally, I looked further into the study that he mentioned in that PsychToday article, and watched interviews with the conductor of that study -- let's just say I was uninspired and unimpressed. On the other hand, my intuition about Gabor Mate is that he is hitting on some profound, tragically-unspoken truths. Honestly if I had to ascribe anyone as my "hero" it would probably be him.

"The very culture that we live in denies that there's truth, makes people hungry, hurts people, leaves them isolated, therefore empty, therefore wanting satisfaction from the outside, therefore addicted, and then it creates all these products, and all these activities, and all these cultural diversions to fill the very emptiness that it creates. And then they say, "That selfishness is the nature of human beings." And there's the complete circle of the ideology." 47:25

I can't justify it. I was just plain wrong, reacting to the book's title rather than its content. Even Dawkins, of course, has acknowledged how his title may be confusing: "In the foreword to the book's 30th-anniversary edition, Dawkins said he "can readily see that [the book's title] might give an inadequate impression of its contents" and in retrospect thinks he should have taken Tom Maschler's advice and called the book The Immortal Gene." Still, the mistake is my responsibility.

Whatever Dawkins claimed to have thought about, post-hoc, and tried to correct in his forward, his UA-cam videos show him in real time as a very shallow, egoistic, and mean-spirited man. Young and strong, full of life,
    I journeyed with delight.....
The rain it came, washed away,
    The path I had desired....
    Searching left, spying right,
    Soon finding myself mired....
With bliss at stake, decisions made,
    To take another course....
Need take a chance, become not idle,
    Dwell not on remorse.....
Trials arose , on my sojourn,
That kept me from my path....
Fate convened, to set me straight,
Lest I should feel its wrath....
    Suns return, healing warmth,
    Drying mud from feet.....
    Feeling stronger, ever lighter,
    Leaping from defeat.....
Lifes ups and downs, ins and outs,
    Lead us not in vain....
Joy and love, not all there is,
    We must embrace our pain.......

19:25 - "All the problems we have is because we don't WANNA grow up" We grow up with supportive and caring parents who nurture us as we explore and grow, like birds in a nest till we are ready to fly. If we didn't get that support, and got kicked out before we were ready, we feel incomplete and want that completion - so - we DO want to grow up, we just want to grow up right, with what we should have healthily had. We want catharsis and have our world be the right way. Thats what we want to grow up.

I'm only at 10:00 but I can tell you this . . and it's only my experience. I "have been" addicted - alcohol free from July 14, 2020 AND I have experienced/known "who I am ' both addicted and not addicted. I am "one". I am not a different person because of my addiction or instead of my addiction. I would identify as having an overactive brain and having "lived in it" disconnecting from emotional experience. I have the awareness of when I am "selfless" and when I am not and I can move from one to the other WITH thoughts. I benefit very much from breathing, mindfulness and music in quieting the cacophony. The healing power DOES reside within us all. It is all our gifts that make us who we are. Addiction was but one. It also connects me to others with whom I now relate on an emotional level.

Our lives mainly resolve around making money. We cannot ever hope to realize our potential when almost all of our time is spent extrinsically motivated.
