For over ten years Gabor Mate has been the staff physician at the Portland Hotel, a residence and harm reduction facility in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside. His patients are challenged by life-threatening drug addictions, mental illness, Hepatitis C or HIV, and in many cases all four. But if Dr. Mate's patients are at the end of the spectrum, there are many others among us who are also struggling with addictions. drugs, alcohol, tobacco, gambling, compulsive work habits, sexual seeking or spending: what is amiss with our lives that we seek such destructive ways to comfort ourselves? And why is it so difficult to stop these habits, even as they threaten our health, jeopardize our relationships and corrode our spirits?
Gabor Mate M.D. is the author of the bestselling books Scattered Minds, When the Body Says No and now In The Realm of Hungry Ghosts - Close Encounters With Addiction

Dr Gabor is one of the greatest minds of today, he is a educator and can so easily make sense of science, reality our culture, and dysfunction. He speaks the truth - and is the only person who makes sense. The voice of reason & the TRUTH.

I agree...By the way AA people believe it's genes and choice are the cause of addictions and not childhood trauma and loss. After listening to Dr. Mate I found the light and left alcoholics anonymous. (It is a cult and run by one Hitler-Clancy Imislund of the pacific group)

Simply Brilliant this man, im struggle with two addictions for almost, 25 years of my life, and now im almost destroyed, and the cause of this was just Adverse childhood experiences ( Sexual abuse and family neglect )like Dr Gabor says . Until all society finally open the eyes and stop judging addict people like garbage, weak and criminals and see that everything that says Dr Gabor is so simple and real and true cause of all addictions , we the addict people will never totally heal

Dr. Mate is no less than incredible. I even passed a few of his videos over to my own therapist to read up on and he was extremely impressed by his perspective. It is refreshing that someone can finally shed some light on such a dark topic.

Amazing, I have been dweling in my own head and running from my demons for years and years. I had coe up with my inabilty to deal with certain things due to a corruption in my moral and emotional development. I had spent countless sleepless nights devising this theory on my own. So Unbelievably close to This lecture. Dr Gabor Mate. You are a beautful man and your tolerance and understanding of people with different societal inadequecies brought tears to my eyes. I hope your word gets out to the masses. Peace to you!

"The good news is that the human brain can develop new circuits, even later on in life" 39:28. There is so much hope in this statement.
Only in the presence of compassion will people allow themselves to see the truth. 1:04:20 . He leaves me challenged and hopeful. Thank you.

I luv this guy, he is the greatest mind, we are so fortunate that he is also Canadian, we should give him a reward in Canada for being a hero instead of some overpaid athlete or dumb ass actor. I vote for Gabor for president! Lol - he is truly my hero, voice of reason, sanity, and truth. Addicts like him, because addicts do not respond to anyone who does not tell the truth, they respond to truth - someone who knows them. And this Dr possesses a honest, kind, perspective.

I went to my first AA meeting and I met the most inspirational people. Everybody contributed to the conversation by talking about what it means to be a part of the group. The first person filled me with inspiration and healing, the next talked about networking, another used a clever analogy to stay grounded, one person described themselves to be like a child. The whole meeting had a lot for me to appreciate and I hope to give back when I see these wonderful individuals in a few weeks. I could not get over the fact that every individual supplied you with knowledge and they all talked about the fact that they thank God that they came back to this particular family. Thank you to all those individuals for their courage and inspiration.

I can't thank you enough for shedding light on so many subjects, from Psychology, to socio dynamics between parent and child to addiction, pain and everything else in between. Problem is society and family still judges The addicts as criminal or cheaters or loosers etc, that lead us into the addiction again. All we have to do is join together the survivors addicts and show them the terrible consequences of Childhood abuse

I have written many papers that include several factors that contribute to one's behavior; socioeconomic status, environment, genetics, family history, and biological. All of these all play a role, there is not just one contributing factor.

I don't think he is saying that no drug is addictive. If I understand him right, I believe he is saying that if we have experienced trauma or stress or abuse at an early age, or if society has removed many of the basic emotional needs in our lives, we will have a very difficult time overcoming the addiction that these drugs contain without someone providing the support that will replace what an addict seeks from the drugs.

@laurakaumbartner - YES...the working out physical exercise produces the chemicals that the Dr. is speaking of. It is a natural / positive way to receive those chemicals that make us feel well. However one must stay aware of this as well. Be careful not to make the gym an addiction as addiction in any form leads to a negative long term outcome. The best way to combat this so to speak is to "stay aware" use your self awareness as an everyday practice that keeps you in the light of truth.

It is a shame there has been a large amount of disinformation spread about Dr Gabor Mate's work (such as psychology today, which coincidently is the first thing which appears when his name is googled)
I think he is spot on about the trauma but the current societal paradigm defines trauma as some big event that happened to a child however, it can be defined as anything really which leads a child to maladaptive behaviour in their adult life (such as many small events).
The entire definition of trauma needs to be clarified and broadened widely. Most people don't seem to understand what it is and it is their ignorance on the matter that brings about criticism of his theories.
