This is why it's extremely important to get therapy and heal from your trauma, especially so if you decide to have kids. Break the cycle. I'm glad that it seems like way more people are aware of their childhood traumas these days and more people are choosing not to have children or to have them later in life when they're less stressed/ more able to deal with being a parent. The issue is that there are some people who don't recognise their trauma and perpetuate the cycle of abuse.

As a teacher, I always see a child who has an ‘oppositional defiant’ condition as a child who is acting out his buried anger and frustration to triggers they experience in the classroom or with other children. For them, this is a ‘safer’ place to let these emotions go. I try to make time to sit quietly with the child to process and validate their feelings and help them find positive solutions to any problem (usually being able to listen and talk with the other).
Listening to Gabor Maté, I now see that I became a teacher to be loved by children because I did not feel attached to my own parents, who loved me but didn’t know what I needed.

Yes The Internet- I have never forgotten how 'The Divided Self' by RD Laing impacted me. I have come to these exact conclusions based upon my own life experiences and dealing with the myopia of the mental health system that is so afraid to unite thinking and feeling with their treatment of individuals that it should be criminal. They push outmoded partial compartmentalized views of the Self, physiology, psychology, biology and society culrure etc...as the complete truth- when taken apart- are just incomplete snap shots at best.
Dr. Gabor is making some important claims and can back this up by his unique work and life experiences. His honesty and willingness to be self reflective is a gift to us all.

I suffer from clinical depression, GAD and ptsd. I told my primary care physician that I scored a 9 on the ACE and she didn't even know what it was. At age 32 I had stage 4 hypertension, then I had a premature ovarian failure and now suffer from osteoporosis. I kept telling her I was extremely stressed and she would not prescribe hormones because she said I was too young. The side effect from no hormones is osteoporosis. Thank you Dr. Mate for giving me insight! Your advice has helped tremendously with my healing process!

    Love listening to this man!
I also love how people refer to trump as a narcissist but won’t call Obama one although the amount of unconstitutional over reach by a president was far greater with Obama. He stated plainly if congress wouldn’t give him what he wanted he would do it anyway, and people cheered. HE would fundamentally transform the face of America, and people cheered. There will be those who love or hate this comment but I defy them to factually prove me wrong. I am a firm constitutionalist and judge all power by that supreme law of the land.

Dr Gabor Mate, Dr Patrick Carnes, Dr Drew Pinsky, modern day Prophets. God bless these gifted souls. Thanks for posting Niroga, the cost of abuse in the US in dollars alone according to the CDC is up to $585 Bn a year, higher than the cost of diabetes and stroke cases. 1% less than defense expenditure, this is an epidemic beyond comprehension, only a spiritual insight, personal experience or an explanation by the likes of Mate, can verbalize the issue and solution.

@wtnomad i dunno but as a philosophy & English teacher i can say your vocab/lexicon is, in one paragraph, more diverse than that of 99.99999% of Americans today, very refreshing. If you're a writer, send link to your stuff.
And YES, humans are doing a lot of people worship/sacrificial-cult stuff today, unaware it's a primeval instinct, thinking ourselves rational & evolved. Maybe uncertain times exaccerbate it. French guy named Rene Girard wrote much about that in his stuff on "mimetic desire" & human rivalry. Prez Trump very good at rousing that scapegoating fervor at rallies & via tweet, a powerful bonding mechanism Girard said, like when they'd toss maidens off a cliff or kill children or teens for spring rituals in ancient societies. Shirley Jackson's story "the Lottery" displays it, & Frank O'connor's "Guests of the Nation " Quite disturbing.

he has solved the inner world of every child, every adult, and also by proxy, society. because it is also devastating though, to get a better following he needs a solution that has as much truth, hope, certainty, willingness behind it as his explanation of the cause.
one solution could be to work teaching medical doctors, psychologists, all parents, and teachers this truth about trauma. which they will be extremely offensive to hear because they will realize that it has damaged them too. socially, when you meet people, accept their chronic 'problems' as adaptations that changed their brains during the course of their lives. be very nice, knowing that at the source of this they feel unconscious pain. don't engage it though. try to only respond to the person's healthy self.
remove the stigma around mental health. people can then feel naturally invited to unravel 'what they think is wrong with them' and 'why' they act that way. with the hope that they can consciously reverse it. it will take a long time, a year or two of really focusing on personal growth, but they can.

I have struggled to this day to understand how to make sense of this but now i just have live and do what is best for my children. And the truth of the matter is that it still affected them. I just lost a friend- she was only 43 and died from liver failure to die her alcoholism. Her mother abused her physically as a child, and mentally as an adult. I met her in AA. She tried many times to get sober via many rehab stints. She just didn’t take to AA. She never got over her mother abusing her. She died on 12/29/19- not even two months ago. I tried so hard to help her. I knew she was in a bad way, but it is still a shock (I live in Taiwan, where I met her, but she moved back to the States a few years ago). When she moved back (near her mother), she just got worse and worse. I miss her so much. I can’t believe she’s fine. I’m so sorry to hear about your abuse and your children also being molested. How sad. Keep watching Gabor. Bless you and your children. 💕🙏💕

Absolutely fantastic description of the mechanics of health and disease, the adapted ego and what follows in terms of individual character formation and the implications for social behaviours and structures. War, what it is, the biology of loss......
At 59.44 he begins a description of the motivation for sociopolitical activism, it's an understanding I've come to in myself, but never heard articulated openly before. It behooves us all to pay attention to this. Be crystal clear about why we want to help others and to effect change in the world. He beautifully explains the difference between being driven by personal rage to address a perceived social wrong -which may be inappropriate- and a sense of outrage -which is a healthy manifestation of compassion, for the persecution of fellow creatures.
