In a rare meeting of minds, and a rare exploration of whether there is a predilection for spirituality, Gabor Mate asks Adyashanti to expand on passages from his recent book My Secret Is Silence. Later they discuss the influence of trauma on the spiritual path and the need for specialist help, spiritual bypassing, and the relationship between spiritual insight and emotional growth.

Yesterday I turned 50. The past year has been a turning point in my life, when I started to realise that every episode of trauma, crisis, conflict, challenges and depression I've faced have bought me tremendous insight and understanding, although I didn't realise it at the time. Now I can see why these things occured and what advantage they have brought me now I no longer feel like a victim with self-pity. On the contrary now, every day I thank Divine Providence for bringing me these experiences and I see the knowledge I gained as a gift which can be turned into wisdom. So many times I felt like life was meaningless and too hard and almost gave up. My advice to anyone reading this going through bad times is to keep on going. Don't give up. Try to see the challenges and how you face them as lessons. Learn as much as you can about as many subjects as you can, especially spiritual wisdom and quantum physics. Watch and learn from nature. All the answers are there. Love and light H

I think people might consider the fact that trauma has a way of impacting your ability to learn, at least academically - to say nothing of an aversion of anyone associated with the word spiritual because of the kind of abuse mentioned so who you learn from becomes an issue as well, plenty of people probably will avoid anyone identified with spiritual and even ignore the ones they have no issue with. Learning from nature is another story of course, but it shouldn't be difficult to understand that ones cognition may be affected significantly so something like quantum physics is certainly an issue. Motivationally of course don't give up is self explanatory, however we really need more to get a feel for your exprience, it's probably the kind of thing a memoir could fully express.

Gabor may not feel that subtle energy, but he certainly radiates it. In our arguably disconnected and overly rationalistic culture, I consider his honesty, compassion, and humility to be far more valuable and easy to connect with, feel, and appreciate than I could with any spiritual abilities.

The bottom line with life is, that everything we do, say, experience etc..... there is something that's aware of it! This something that's aware of it can't be explained with words, it can only be realised. It's that still presence within that's always here from birth to death. It's timeless. That is the true self. We all know it, but it gets overlooked because of identification with thought, i.e.who we think we are, the conditioned mind and the body. This is ultimate truth, whether it's realised or not.

“-Charles. Oh, your voices, your voices. Why don't the voices come to me? I am king, not you!
-Joan. They do come to you, but you do not hear them. You have not sat in the field in the evening listening for them. When the angelus rings, you cross yourself and have done with it. But if you prayed from your heart and listened to the thrilling of the bells in the air after they stopped ringing, you would hear the voices as well as I do.”

YES! Suffering isn't guaranteed to awaken but it provides the sharpest challenge to human beings, forcing the choice to awaken and grow or go down with pain. Those who have trauma, if they have reached even the same level in their development as your average person, trust me - they have travelled further to get there. If they are further beyond your average person in development, they have seen and heard things that bring humanity forward and which we need to hear

I really appreciate this comment. Focusing on the mind only, with no discussion of the body, seems to me like we are missing a big piece. I have known spiritual teachers to spiritually bypass their own trauma by not acknowledging it at all and then that leaves people who can’t control their mind, for example, feeling worse about themselves because they aren’t as good as their teacher. This just makes me appreciate Dr. Mate more. I do not think “enlightenment” is possible without processing our own traumas. We have to be able to hold the whole of our lives and not just focus on the “good”.

I agree with Gabor Mate about brining the subject of trauma into the spiritual domain. To acknowledge it at the very least. There are many of us living with trauma trying to practice meditation with devotion to the point of actually abusing ourselves. Trauma is on the blindspot of spiritual teachings which makes one dealing with trauma even more ashamed. I know that it needs to be addressed by other ways but it would be really helpful to support our practice by encouraging us perhaps a bit differently. Especially that people suffering from trauma are indeed very motivated in going beyond their personalities so there are a high number of us who are affected by the lack of empathy/understanding in the spiritual community. So thank you Gabor Mate for bringing this up. Finally someone did it.

Great point by Adyashanti: "Englightenment is defined simply by powerful moments is a misconception." Yes, and I would also agree with his idea that spiritual work is more like medicine than an intellectual statement. However, when I see him talk to people like Oprah, I feel like he sells his brand of spirituality like it's some emotional "ah ha" moments.
Mate tries to dig deeper into the essence of spirituality, beyond the dopamine hit "feel good" moments and IS trying to see is it as a form of medicine as well. That's why I think he brought up the point about trauma, since trauma can be considered the greatest psychological and emotional wound (or disease) one can suffer from. Yet, Adyashanti is alluding that trauma should be treated by therapy, not necessarily spiritual teachings. It's almost as if he's trying to relinquish the responsibility of spiritual work healing trauma.
If it's not there to heal trauma, what is it there for, is I think what Mate was pressing on. Mate is suggesting that if it's not to heal trauma, the existential disease of humanity, then is spiritual work just some recreational activity for bored suburbanites? Adyashanti faced, in my opinion, some contradictions there. I do respect him but I find his brand of spirituality recreational, by his own definition, which feel like a pop culture product, rather than a deeper, profound spiritual medicine that Mate is trying to show.

I mean we project an image of him as "this" and when we finally see the reality of it, we get disappointed, we say he is fake or not enlightened.
My point is, this whole spiritual journey in my understanding is to become "aware", to be aware what our mind is telling us including our biases, judgement, fears, projections, ambitions, as this is part of our conditioning.

Thank you for your work, Dr Maté! It has changed my life!

When Gabor mentioned trauma I'm surprised he said that it has never been tackled by spiritual teachers. I say this because I listen to a lot of Eckhart, and he often mentions the 'pain body'. When we cease to live in the now, and the insecurities, rages, judgement towards others surface, Eckhart often refers to this as our pain body coming up. And we silence our pain by observing it and holding it, recognising where it comes from. Now in other talks I've watched of Gabor - who to me has been a great gift to listen to - Gabor mentions that he felt hurt and sulked one evening when upon flying back home from a weekend retreat, his wife did not pick him up from the airport (in a few words). Gabor says he realised where that anger and pain came from. They came from his childhood experience of abandonment, when his mum had left him with a stranger because the Nazis were closing in on the Jews in Budapest. Although she did it out of love, in his child's mind it translated into abandonment.
To come to my point - Gabor is probably already doing what Eckhart would tell him to do - recognising the pain, recognising where it comes from, holding it and letting go. Letting go is not always easy but in my opinion Gabor is there, well on his spiritual path, but he's too humble to realise it ❤

Frustration and anger disappear when we accept Love as Our Real State of Being; when we accept Our Will to Love constantly. When we accept Our Will to Love, all of the trauma caused by the rest-less ego-centric mind is put to rest, as Love is Rest-ful, because It is Pure Harmonious Energy. To see them both together was a sudden very powerful integration of two different paths for me that gives me a lot of hope and conviction that I must be doing something right! It's a wonderful example of how human beings from such different walks of life can come together in friendship and mutual respect, and this is the message for me, that yes, we can! We humans can meet and talk and agree or disagree but in a powerfully mutual and respectful way. If only our political leaders could understand this concept--that winning over another really isn't the most advanced way for us humans to learn to interact, but instead, to share and enjoy the resources of this wonderful gift of life!

I like the honesty of adyashanti regarding the trauma
All other spiritual teachers should be like this
People who have trauma... Please read this... Don't make the mistake to escape trauma through spirituality.

Lovely interview with a lovely man. It's good to see spiritual ideas slowly reaching the fringes of the mainstream. Slowly of course and to the fringes or even the fringes of the fringes!

Very much enjoyed the exchange between both of you! Beautiful, we need to integrate all of it, human and higher self, it’s an ongoing process instead of pretending we get to some spiritual pinnacle and then don’t have to experience or process, help, heal, celebrate accomplishments from human self, not just acknowledge and celebrate higher self manifestation and alignment. 😊❤️

Great conversations between the two of you. Brand new way of thinking about silence. However I decided to dive into my negativity to work myself through it. Intuitively I knew I needed help and I got help the other modalities of all the traffic residence and emotional body code. Four years later and still committed to my healing, I find myself feeling absolutely wonderful. I can describe this as a crossing the Wide wide open ocean with my support system nearby me whenever I needed it. My commitment and my support has made me a brand new person. One that I absolutely love… Myself!

I learnt more from the interviewer’s questions than the answers given. Dr Gabor exude the energy of the master in the room. I don’t know the other gentleman. I’m sure he is a great teacher...but there is something about Dr Gabor...so present, focused...has a strong presence. Thank you.

Being hooked up differently is exactly what astrology defines and explains. 12 houses of human development, a base blueprint, Destiny and Free will, and Transits which create crisis and opportunities for growth. People with more Water signs- Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces, are more emotionally and psychically "wired". As planets move and activate aspects of a persons personality, both current and latent, changes occur. Timing. The Soul's Path.

Kaitlin Heath, when there is no beauty in it there is no Love in it.
There is no need for a guru, for whom one should be a follower..yes sir, no sir..
Be your own 'guru', for beauty and truth in yourself.
Love jumps in to support, always.
It's not difficult.., it's hard to keep strait. :-)

There is a lot of very precious silliness going on here. How on earth do these people manage to help people with trauma ? I for one am very skeptical about how they are communicating. If this is the state of the art of spiritual practice in the US then I am concerned. Oh sorry I forgot. I haven`t paid for and read enough of their books yet. Silly me. Just give me time to study these two great masters and I will be enlightened very soon. So excited. Soon I will know how to love.

Gabor Mate (on the left asking the questions) has helped many to heal trauma. Other guy (on the right talking in circles & contradicting himself) displays many signs of narcissistic personality disorder, not sure how much you can help others when you're still so wounded yourself, maybe you can. But he & people like him are of no help to me at this point.

Thanks to both of you. As I listened, I was reminded of the Work of Byron Katie...and the contribution she has made to self awareness through her meditative process Ask Four Questios and Turn It Around.....in the early days of her sharing this way of questioning of our thoughts , she introduced it as providing a path to ...stopping the nightmarem waje tge baby, the end of war....like Adya said...the hardest thing seems to be to be honest with ourselves....as one of the 'tools' in my ongoing journey, it is a fierce yet available practice.... This was a great Easter Sunday listening over a cuppa ..thanks again.

@56:20 Without waiting for an answer from Adyashanti, the answer to Gabor's question "If there is uneven development (of the mind) that you describe, as great teachers as they maybe that somehow wouldn't pollute their teaching at the same time?" It's a good question and I'm not sure I can give a great answer to it!!" Well I do! From the Jewish spiritual wisdom I have gleaned, this is not even a question!! It's absolutely axiomatic in Judaism that in one's personal, private inner spiritual domain, one's spiritual and moral probity MUST be beyond reproach; thus people who fail in this area are rendered charlatans! There's a lot of talk about spiritual, metaphysical subjects today and ne're a hint to the fact that unless the individual, any individual giving forth of his insights is bonded to a lethally accurate, finely tuned moral compass, he has nothing to say that should be regarded as authentic! In fact the moral aspect of one's being precedes the spiritual knowledge.
