I remember having a discussion with a bunch of people on a forum when the topic was "Why can't teachers do their insets during holiday time rather than term time?" And as always, that naturally developed into the topic of teachers' long holidays. And what I quickly realised was that the arguments about teachers' long holidays were absolutely never about the education of their kids, it was always about the inconvenience to parents. One guy had never even considered that it might be the kids that need a break from school, not the adults. And don't get me wrong, I sympathize. We live in a society that basically forces everyone to become a two-worker household, but then offers barely any help with childcare. And in this situation, people start to see school as a free childcare option and get angry when it's taken away during school holidays.
