  • I've made a few resin river projects on my channel, but lots of friends have asked for a smaller version to practice with. So, to help get you started on your resin river table journey, I'm sharing a tutorial for DIY "Fake" Live Edge Resin River Coasters tutorial using scrap wood from my shop! Even cooler, I didn't use live edge wood for this project! Here's how I did it!

      It’s definitely not the cheapest product, but it does last a while depending on what you make! The table top epoxy is much cheaper than deep pour, you just have to pour it in 1/4” increments instead of all at once. I really enjoy watching your videos, and from you I’ve gotten so many ideas of things I want to attempt. As a matter of fact, I’ve copied several of your playlists for easier referencing, then realized I should just subscribe, so now I am one of your happy subscribers! Anyway, love watching what you do, and can’t wait to learn my way around some of these projects with you as my guide. Oh yeah, I’m basically a brand new woodworker without ever having taken wood shop or anything before now, but I created a cutting board as part of an event with Wounded Warrior Project, and realizing how much I enjoyed the process and being extremely pleased with the result, I am diving in head first! (I’m a disabled combat veteran with severe PTSD, so I’m hoping woodworking will help with keeping my mind occupied and onto healthy thoughts). Anyway, I really love this piece, and though my keys are way too heavy to use the magnets, I do really want to create something similar! Keep it up 👍🏻, from a new fan!

      DIY Huntress Thank you! Yes, I actually can’t wait to order some epoxy with my next paycheck (I have to space out my purchases...the wife is catching onto me!), and sort through the wood I currently have and find what I think will work best for this project. Quick question, what do you use for your pigments? I think I’ll need to order some mica powder with the epoxy, but I’m not sure which ones to order, or what brand.

    • @christophermckinney984

      DIY Huntress Hi Sam, it’s been a while, and I am actually ready to attempt this project, but I just have one important question first. Before pouting the epoxy into the silicon molds, do you put anything into the mold to line it to make the epoxy “release” more easily? I have seen on tabletop videos a mold release being used, but I wasn’t sure if it was needed when using the silicon? I do have a Candle Mold Release here on hand, but if I do need to use a releasing agent, will that be sufficient, or is there a specific release that I should acquire? Thanks Sam, and I hope mine come out half as cool as yours!!

    I like wood-resin projects very much. For me, the smaller project the better because resin is extremely expensive over here and difficult to get. I didn't try to do any till now.
    On other channels I noticed that after completely hardening they sand both wood and resin and afterwards they use special polish for the resin to make it nice and shiny. Did you do that as well? Fake live edge = dead edge? Thanks for sharing the video. I learned a lot of new tricks for whenever I start to do some resin projects.

    • @diyhuntress
      @diyhuntress  3 роки тому +1

      Thank you! Yes and no... the jigsaw has the potential to crack the resin after it’s cured. Doing it this way leaves a really clean edge. But, it can be done!

  • @offthecha1n
    @offthecha1n 3 роки тому

    Great video. Ordered the molds and currently experimenting with scrap wood to get a good circle cut. When I am confident enough to add the epoxy, how critical is it to keep it at that exact temperature. Would it just take longer to cure if it was warmer?

    • @diyhuntress
      @diyhuntress  3 роки тому +1

      Yess! If it is too hot, the epoxy can actually overheat and cause a pretty bad chemical reaction. So, you may want to make sure that it is the right temperature or maybe a little cooler when pouring. If it is cooler, then the cure will take longer. Hope this helps!

    These are super fun! Imma total newbie at the epoxy projects. Quick question...if you wanted to stain the wood, would you do that after all final sanding? And would it still allow the shine to come through from the resin? Then, would you complete the last step of a final clear coat? Also, i’m assuming building up to the higher # sandpaper would eventually get rid of all of the haze caused by the sanding and allow a shine to come through again? Thanks for posting all of your projects! I’ll be watching very closely as I learn to do some of my own. Thanks for inspiring us!

      Ahh! Welcome to the most addicting hobby ever! 😍 I would totally recommend staining them after you’re done sanding and then sealing them after you’re done staining. The higher the grade you use when sanding, the more of a shine you’ll get on the resin. Hope this helps!

    Also, what is the brand of dyes you’re using.

    • @diyhuntress
      @diyhuntress  4 роки тому +1

      I don’t know what the science is behind it exactly, but you can see it way better in my resin key holder project on my channel! It causes a cool reaction! You can also do the same with acrylic pigments too.

      I’d start with Table Top epoxy! It can be poured in small increments at a time and is pretty easy to use as long as you mix it the right way. Type of wood doesn’t matter too much! Just have fun with it. 😊

    Not a fan of fake live edge. The grain doesn't match and it looks cheap to me, but just my preference. Have you tried Rubio monocoat for coasters? It's what I use. Super easy and cures quick.
