Loving your builds and content. Thanks for being human and showing your mistakes because as always behind the scenes EVERYONE makes mistakes! Also love that rare display stand! Excellent work!!!
I have been in this business over 40 yrs and never made a coaster either, trivets yes, but never an end-grain coaster. Why? Have your client drop one onto a hard floor and see how it goes. However, this has given me a great idea. I have begun to dabble in wooden boats and now have a lot of fiberglass scraps. So I can see some of these on the radar finally. Thanks
I love these. Just out of curiosity, did you try taking the corner cut-offs and glue them to each to make more coasters? Depending on how you rotated the pieces and glued them up, you could come up with some pretty cool designs.
Dam Billy there stunning as a Scottish man i approve you taking our plaid and messing about with it. Those first set you could always cut them up and make chaos coasters. May have to try chaos ones dont think i have the tools to do thrse. 🏴👍
@@NewtonMakes yea it's not bad over here although weather sucks most the time and people won't pay anywhere near what u can get for products over there. You should come over again. We could do a build?? 🤔🤔🏴👍
Billy, you certainly know how to make the process look easy. The finished product looks great and I can see lot's of Scottish people wanting these coasters 😊. I will be putting your video's to good use in the next couple of weeks as I have a cutting board to make for a wedding present, it's for our best friends son and to be wife. I've only just completed building my very first workshop and honestly I have zero woodworking experience. Hence why I will be putting your video's to good use and maybe even stealing an idea or three from you. Hopefully I'm able to make good on your video's and actually make something nice for them both. Actual size I'm thinking of going with is around 18inch by 30inch and 2inch thick. Nodoubt I'm going to be needing a fair bit of wood to do it justice ( including my many mistakes to come) 😅😢😂😊. As always buddy 💯% 👍 🇬🇧.
While it may sound overly simplistic, I'll say it anyway because it rings true - Start with step 1. Tackling new projects or patterns can cause hesitation as you attempt to understand each step, yet never take the first one. A lot of times you have to saw *screw it," start cutting wood, and figure out what to do next later.
Where do you get your sponge brushes from? Everything I’ve purchased off Amazon has been basically garbage… I haven’t found a sponge brush that applies finish nicely that’s not overly expensive. All me cheap but I can’t bring myself to buy expensive sponges when I’m going to throw them away. It really adds up when applying multiple coats. BTW, these coasters are so damn nice! What did you do with the first batch?
I hope you can read my comment. I have a feeling my comments are not being shown. I must have said something not appreciated by someone else. That said, I enjoy your videos very much. I enjoy making small boxes. You have been a great source. I can’t even wrap my ahead around the pattern. How does this make sense to you while you are planning your cuts?
Sounds like an idea for a wholleeeeee other video. That would be interesting to walk thru the planning process so people can learn how to plan other styles and who knows what other cool ideas we’ll have from people’s creativity. Would be a cool video.
I'll see what I can do. There has to be an audience. For example, I was flooded with requests to make a video about designing woodworking templates. I finally made the video, but unfortunately, no one watched it. Doesn't mean I can't do something about designing a pattern. I have to film it in a way that benefits as many people as possible.
9:40 I think it is a mistake using a water based finish. I find these finishes make the wood dull and milky looking. A coat of linseed oil and then the oil based wipe on poly would make a big difference on something like this!
I rarely use water based finish for the reasons you said. This was a rare situation. I tested multiple finishes and liked the muted color for this one.
@@NewtonMakes theres a local place I wanna try but I'm having a difficult time trying to figure out board feet and and what my project is going to require. Is it better to get thicker lumber like 5/4 and just mill it myself?

The plaid is amazing. Just beautiful.

Excellent work!!!
It's very easy to hide them. I wish I could show every setback or how I work through challenges but it's difficult to film it all.
That pattern is so clean!!!!!
Absolutely amazing.
That looks good, is unique and ideally suited to the hobbyist. And it's a well constructed video too. Well done 👏
Finished coasters look great!
Thank you my new friend! I am going to try these soon, have some spring planters to make first. Keep up the great work!
The coasters are GREAT but I think the holder is what put's it over the top. All worth it! !! !!!
So funny because I didn't show a lot of it because I figured no one would care 🤣

Looks great, well worth the time.
Those came out great!!!
Beautiful take on coasters! Probably my favorite tbh
High praise! 🙌
The stand is stunning. Will have to try me some plaid!
do it... DO IT! Worth it
Wow what a great set of coasters they turned out amazing and the stand looks amazing too. Great video as always Thanks for sharing
Great looking coasters and nice video. I'm not normally a fan of plads, but these look great.
I love these. Just out of curiosity, did you try taking the corner cut-offs and glue them to each to make more coasters? Depending on how you rotated the pieces and glued them up, you could come up with some pretty cool designs.
I had the same thought. Kinda bugged me that he didn't try it on camera lol
I tried. They didn't line up well enough so I set them aside for later. Who knows when I'll get a creative use for them.
Top class coasters very nice
Looks great
Awesome coasters!
Super creative nice work!
Great look, great job!
10:29 I agree this is awesome!
Beautiful!!!
Love it! Here's hopeful of more amazing patterns to come!
They're gorgeous, Billy! Truly amazing work! 😃
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Not too shabby for something simple like coasters!
Love these! Thanks for the plans and the video. Will definitely have to give them a shot!!
It's a fun project!
Nice work! Thank you for sharing 👍🏼

That's high praise. My brief time in Scotland was awesome. I kept the pieces for later. I'll figure out something to do with them.

Nice, excellent video! What do you do with all the waste after cutting out the coaster?
I set them aside. Maybe inspiration will strike later.
It's an art, millions of likes
Really nice coasters and stand, Billy. I just bought a bunch of Titebond II on sale at Menards lol.
Bill
I'm completely out. Using hide glue on my current project until I get to the store.

Great Video. What is the mini roller that you are using to spread the glue?
I just put a link in the video description
What brand of double-sided tape do you use???

Amazing
i am still way too scared to do something like this!
Nice
I like the stand for the coasters. Super good idea to present the coaster. And I also know where you got the idea for the pattern… your shirt 🤪🤪🤪
Funny because I threw together the stand sort of as a throwaway idea. I didn't think people would care about that part. I guess I was incorrect.
That's a ton of work. Wondering what I'd have to sell these for to justify the time and materials...
$63.47 each. That's my go to number when I have no clue. 😂
Gorgeous!!
"I think they look pretty alright"
I tell that to myself about myself, 😂
And then you follow it up with, time to mess it up, lol
It's like getting dressed in the morning and then getting the first bit of saw dust on your clothes. It messed up your shirt, yet still worth it.
I feel obligated to make a Spaceballs reference and say the "you went Plaid!" 😂
They turned out great
Well I did have to set my table saw from suck to blow when I restarted the whole thing.
The coasters look great but I really like that holder…
Man, again with the holder. The comments have made it official, I shouldn't have assumed people wouldn't care about the holder. 🤣
Well you know what assuming means lol

I agree. I see building portion but my brain doesn’t comprehend the process for getting to that final design.
Cant read your comment 😢
I can see it

Theres some boards in your glue.
Those are gorgeous. Mr Makes where do you get your hardwood lumber? I coukd give you my email if that helps.
A lot of it I milled myself. Otherwise, it comes from a local dealer.

They've gone to plad..
Do you have Titebond shares?? You should!
