In this video, Steve was Upstart Epoxy walks you through the creation process of matte black coasters with Olivewood. When beginning this process it is much easier to use a rectangular form. The one used in the video was constructed with plywood, wrapped in sheathing tape, adjoined with a nail gun and finally, it is sealed on all joints and corners using silicone to prevent any leaks. Once the form has been assembled, we cut the wood to shape and place it inside of the form by adhering it to the base of the form using hot glue. Once the hot glue has dried we are ready to pour using our Deep Pour epoxy resin! We're using a black metallic pigment to create this matte black look. Once the epoxy has been poured and cured (after 72 hours) we take it outside and finish the coasters. To do this, we cut the long rectangular slab into five 5-inch increments. This gives us five individual coasters. Once the coasters have been cut we sand them from 180 grit to 320 grit using an orbital sander and take them back inside. From there, we apply a finishing oil and stick a thin cork adhesive to the base of the coasters to prevent them from scratching anything we lay them upon. That freehand tablesaw cut is going to feature in my nightmares tonight.
Good tip on sanding the smooth surface. Had not considered the slippage issue.
Great vid! Your shop could use a good vacuum ....LOL
When cutting out the 24 1/2 into 6…why not use a stop block? You’d get exact matches even if the measure was off by a small fraction.
Fantastic video and info!
Thank you very much!
I'm interested in making a table top. Where do you work on these outdoors or indoor. Do you need to be in a vented open to outdoor air for fumes and dust? It looks like your in an indoor room for mixing and pouring.
Where do you recommend looking to source the olive wood?
Do people make these and sell them online?
My question is where do you get that wood from?
We recommend checking your local Facebook Marketplace for the best deals on live edge or pre-cut pieces. If you can't find any good local options, some of our favorite online wood suppliers are The Lumber Shack and Woodworkers Source.
You need to really work on that dust collection my man! And use stop blocks! And you say “folks” to much lol also you can clearly do it but for accuracy is not found using a carpenters speed square!
unsafe!!!
