This was a fortunate video to stumble across. Three days ago I started making my first game ever. With absolutely zero experience. I’ve never coded, never done any artwork outside of stickman wars in the back of my school book. Never used a game engine. (I do have a tiny bit of experience with 3D modelling but I sucked at it) But I’ve always loved games. Like you they got me through a lot growing up. And I even went to college after high school to study it (hence tiny amount of experience in 3D modelling) but due to life I had to drop out after only 6months and the dream of creating worlds and stories as a game seemed impossible for the following decade. That brings me to this week, when I realised the only thing stopping me is. Well me. Will I make a game that rivals a behemoth of something like GTA 6 or Skyrim. No not in a million years. But if I can make something that even one single stranger plays and enjoys. Well it be something… So I stopped making excuses and blew the dust off my old pc which at this point is about as powerful as a toaster. (I plan on upgrading my hardware when I get a Christmas bonus from work ,but I wanted to stop making excuses and start learning and making games) So i went from never writing a single line of code to having wrote 168 lines. In two days. Is it a lot, not really relative to what’s needed, Are they messy, nonsensical and don’t ’exactly’ do what I wanted them to. 100% but it’s a start. Which is more progress than I’ve made in the last ten years. But with that said this video got through to me more than others I’ve watched (all the “so you want to make a game follow these ten steps”) videos. Like you said in this video. My ego (the zero experienced ego in my case voice in my head) “keep the scope small” isnt advice for me I can make a branching narrative rpg with a deep moral choice system XD But no. Not sure why your video got through the ego bubble. But I’m no where near that yet. My first games will absolutely suck. And that’s okay. I’ll learn from them. It’s okay to take a break but don’t let my imagination and ideas run away from my current ability. I’ll get there. One day. For now focus on the small improvements and eventually I’ll make my “dream game” I’m at the bottom of the mountain I don’t need to try sprint my way up when I can just take my time.
@yorkiechess7586 Thanks for sharing your story. It's really encouraging that you took the time to write it. I'm glad you could get something out of this video. Best of luck on your journey :)
I respect your way of life that's what I like to hear making games cause it's your passion 🥸👌
