In this episode of #PaintLikeAPro I begin this large painting of a mule deer buck under a gorgeous sky. I show you how to block in the sky then dive into what techniques to use when layering the colors properly to create realistic clouds.
If you have any questions about something I covered or maybe something I didn't cover I am more than happy to answer.
Materials I used:
Golden Fluid Acrylics (titanium white, carbon black, napthol red, Primary yellow, quinacridone red, primary cyan)
Liquitex soft body acrylics (cad orange, cerulean blue)
Water for mixing with paint
Round blender and scrumbling brushes from artist loft and princeton. Various other brushes I cover in the video.

I think you ought to sell dvds or maybe just downloadable files of these painting tutorials that have no fast forwarding, I'd definitely buy that! Sometimes during the sped up parts you add in new color mixes or new layers that I'd love to see in live action.

Like you r sense of humor in the beginning of the video lol, I too would like to see a close up shot, maybe of the deer when you get more into being done. I've been home recuperating from surgery, can't wait to start painting again, but watching you is a relaxing healing to me. 👍🏻

Chuck....your artistry is just incredible to me. I really appreciate the level of detail you put into your work. I've been learning a lot from you, so thank you for sharing your talent! I've been scratching my head for months on how to get my skies to really pop with dimension and how to apply the colors to give me that bright glow effect. This video has helped me understand how important it is to be patient and "persistent" when applying layer after layer of highlights and shadows until I'm happy with it. I've also picked up the habit of smoothing edges out with my finger by watching some of your videos...works like a charm! I'm using Liquitex basics and Grumbacher at the moment. Do you think the viscosity might be a little too thick to get my results to look like this, or will thinning work just as well?
Thanks Israel, No problem it's great to hear! I love to see that you are picking up so much from things like this. That's awesome. It could be yes. Might depend on the brand though too. I would suggest trying a couple bottles of soft body or fluid and compare. The best way is trying for yourself. I tend to think it's easier for me with a pre made thinner paint

Love this painting so restful watching you. I did my first painting that I can say really worked today. Everything seemed to come together smashing. It can stand being refined. But a bit more experience I think I’m beginning to crack it. It’s a Great Tit sitting on a branch with frozen horthorn fruits.

Never mind, I answered my own question 😆. Can you post a tutorial for oil painting clouds? I need help badly. Mine blend too much and lose their realisticness
WOW, It is amazing how you brought that to life. Just before you said it out loud, I was thinking exactly what you said: "by continuing to work at it you begin to visualize what you want the clouds to be". Though, the many different ways you had the sky in the process looked so pretty; It was a beautiful process, watching you develop the clouds into what appears to be floating towards us and breaking up. I didn't see you getting frustrated but I surely have gotten frustrated when I painted but I kept telling myself not to give up. I am a beginner; I've still got so much to learn about everything. Little by little I am learning some but I am still having some problems applying.
My question, at this time, is what is the difference in the soft bodied paint compared to regular paints?
I am pretty sure that I know what heavy body is. I think that heavy bodied is more used with someone who wants to paint with a palette knife, I think mostly for a 3 dimensional look, as in flowers; or if someone wants their strokes to show. I've only just noticed about a month ago that there were paints that are called soft bodied. Also, do the soft bodied paint,s make a big difference when blending?

Thanks for all of that Debby! Soft body is just manufactured to be thinner in consistency than the "regular" paints. So you don't need to thin it down for easy blending and they also will cover better when thinned down because they have a higher pigment load. Yes they make a difference.. But whether that's a good or bad difference depends on the artist and their intentions. It just takes experimenting. I encourage you to try several types and see what you like best! :)

Hey Braxton! Awesome. My vote would be to just paint over it and keep going. You never know what will happen unless you stick with it. And I also think that that's when we as artists tend to learn the most so that's something to think about. But yeah you shouldn't have any problems painting over it if you're using acrylics

I watched this first video of the deer last. I've been frustrated with losing my drawing on the canvas. You said you did your drawing with graphite and then used a fixative (smart). What type of fixative did you use?

I paint indoors and have a mixed batch of acrylic paints, like, folk art, liquitex and cheaper student quality paints.......most of them seem to be pretty transparent and dry to a dull muddy colour instead of vibrant colour..
Well if they are heavy body paints and cheaper types, that can sometimes be why they are transparent when thinned down. It's why I use high-end soft body or liquid paints. The heavy bodies can sometimes dry quicker as well, at least for me in the environment I work in. The loss of color vibrancy is sometimes the nature of acrylics. However try using a gloss varnish to finish it with, it will help restore the color.
I went to buy some white in this liquid paint...$10 for a small bottle 10oz, and $20 for a large 4oz. Is that about right? I decided to go with a huge tub of grumbucher gesso as my white because it does seem to keep the paint from drying as fast.
That's about right, they are a bit cheaper online though. It is also surprising how far that little bottle will do too. You don't need very much the way I paint. Good luck with the gesso though! I have never tried that
I'd appreciate it if you could explain the highlights on the painting too and not speed it up, because I cant seem to understand how the shadows and highlights in the cloud go. Thank you!
Are the multiple layers of color change creating depth or is it more of your process to find the right balance of color and contrast?

Haha, thankfully I haven't done that yet. But I have wash my brush in my coffee and then drink my coffee after that. I learned pretty quick though!
