In this video, I show you how to take your acrylic paintings to the next level with the addition of oil paint over the top.
If you have any questions about something I covered or maybe something I didn't cover in this painting tutorial I am more than happy to answer.
Materials I used:
Gamblin artist oil colors
Gamblin Galkyd medium
Oderless paint thinner
Water for mixing with paint

This guy knows his stuff! I will be watching more of his videos!! Thank You for being a great teacher!
You're so good at showing and explaining. It helps a LOT when artists show us the problems they encounter, and how they go about solving them. There are so very many problems *cries*
brilliant! I am new to oil - having a lifetime with acrylic and needed this to help me transition. thank you!
I do this, also, with some of my acrylic paintings. It is so nice to have a more in-depth video about the ins and outs of this technique. Love to do this. Adding the oils is like icing on the cake!
I was convinced throughout the intro that the painting was already complete & perfect... Didn't realize it needed any finishing touches! 😆
This guy is the REAL DEAL. He knows his stuff
This is one of the most beautiful paintings I've ever seen... You're a fenomenal artist!
I started off watching Bob Ross but I like his way much better, its a lot less expensive.
Cristobal Castro
Art is a subjective concept. Telling someone they don’t understand art makes you look like a Neanderthal, and I really hope you were joking.
Cristobal Castro
What? Yes it is :/
A high quality painting from a beginner artist probably pales in comparison to that of a professional artist. Quality is most certainly subjective.
This is way beyond 90% of people starting out. It's still a masterclass.
I've been a hobby painter for many years starting with oils and then to acrylics but never thought of doing oil over. You helped me figure out how to improve my acrylics and soften them ...love the technique. Would never have thought of this on my own.
You’re so talented! I appreciate that not only is your art phenomenal you’re also a gifted speaker. The way you explain everything, you’re very understandable and yet you also get to the point. Wonderful teaching skills. Bravo 👏🏼
Chuck this was amazing. I am an oil painter at heart but I am learning to love acrylics as well. That being said my biggest issue when it comes to painting is the layout. I would love to see you do a video or two where you start with a blank canvas and walk through your process of how you design your layouts. Do you use reference photos, how do you get your images to the canvas etc.
I appreciate it. Thanks for this.. I have actually tried making one already on this very subject, but failed. I will be starting a new one soon and I will certainly try this again and take you through the process. To answer your question on references, yes and no. This place exists only in my mind, so no in the beginning. After it's laid out though I'll use my references to help pull certain elements together such as the truck or perhaps the people.
Odorless mineral spirits I fine are still pretty strong oder. Any tricks on how to stand that. I do like your painting. Do you cover the painting with a second coat of finish when your painting is finished.
The detail and quality of your instruction is top class. I love the way you show the mixing process on the palette every time. This insight alone has helped me enormously. Thank you.
Wildlife and Art Chuck...great intro...you certainly covered every aspect that pertains to your process of this painting...I appreciate the fact that your an artist who really takes the time and put your all into a piece...this is a beautiful piece Chuck...
Thanks Chuck, this was very helpful. And it looks great.
This is an excellent example of oils over acrylic. Thanks Chuck.
Wow, that was amazing when you added the oil over the top. You are so right. It does take your painting to the next level. Thank you for the in depth lesson. Loved the painting!!
Thank you for the show and tell. The use of oils with acrylics makes more sense to me now.
Thank you so much ! This is the best illustration of oil over acrylic , that I've seen ! Love your videos , keep them coming !
Thank you for shareing your knowledge with us. You are so down to earth and represent in your works the 'sweet life' and bring a yearning of the 'good 'ole days' to life.
I have never tried to paint oil over acrylics, but you have given me the inspiration to give it a go, I have to thank you for that great tutorial.
I've always been too scared to try oils. But if I test them out like this I'm sure I'll get the hang of them eventually! What an awesome idea, thanks for sharing this technique! Beautiful painting as well. Love the color choices and lighting.
Super Excited that I found this video. YOU have brought blending and light to a whole new level. This is just what Ive been looking for , I cant wait to get to painting working with this technique you taught me. Great teaching and Your work is AMAZING , your color and details is incredible. Thank you sooooo much.
Thanks so much , I'm learning much more from you than any of my art teachers of the past.
Thanks so much for that!
And this is such an awesome video. Every time I look at paintings I've always thought years ago how did people make it so luminous.
Very beautifull painting process - your brushstrokes looked like a caress almost like a magic stick. You are a very detailed painter and it reminder me of painting hours as a child filling out paintbooks. And The style sticks are so practical
Awesome explanation. Never thought to use oil OVER acrylic. My mind is blown.
Wow! This is fantastic! Great work and a wonderful tutorial! I've been wondering if I could do oils over acrylics for the exact reasons you describe so I UA-cam'd those keywords and there you were. Thanks so much!!
Beautiful work. Love it. This reminds me so much of Terry Redlin. Great job. Wonderful feeling with this
Being from Minnesota, Terry was my childhood hero. I'm so honored that you would mention his name. Thank you!
Honestly watching this video straight up helped me understanf how to glaze acrylocs better than any and i dont feel frustrated with oil paints anymore lol I just wish you used knives lol watching you scrub the paint to mix the oil is making me think of how expensive brushes are and how many you probably go through lol.
I'm about to start this on several of my acrylic paintings. I learned a great deal. Thank you.
Thank you so much for this. I have been working on a portrait in acrylics and this is technique will definitely take it to the next level. I was nervous about oils but this video gives me confidence.
Great to hear that! Thanks Randall. You are welcome
Incredible!! You just helped me with a technique needed to brighten up the white I need on my peony painting. Thank you!
Awesome. I think I might have a go at painting over one or two of my acrylic paintings with oil paints after seeing this. x
Andrew, Thank you for this. I just got some oil paints and supplies to work over acrylics, too, and this is so helpful. I love that acrylics don’t smell, are easy to clean, and dry fast. But even with slow drying acrylic types and mediums, I can’t get what I want with skies and skin and flower petals, etc. Just ordered the Krylon as you suggested. Really love your work and appreciate your advice. Cheers.
Hi Chuck, thanks for your response and most of all thanks for sharing your techniques.
That sky went from wow to WOW..........amazing work.
This is the best explained vdo i have seen so far
I love your tutorials. you may be able to find those style sticks in most places that sell makeup applicators. The ones that I have in mind are used for applying eye shadow.
Ok youve sold me on this. Ive always wondered what the hell was the point in finishing an acrylic painting in oils but this makes perfect sense. Especially to achieve soft luminescence. When I have an incredible amount of patience and extra funds for oils I will try, thank you.
so beautiful !
what varnish shud we use when we use both acrylics and oils ?
I'd like to know as well!
I am so thankful to find this video. Thank you so much! Because I need more understand both techniques and I realised that some shades which I have presented in acrylics, they aren't available in oil paintings...❤🙏🏻
You answered all my questions about oil over acrylic! Thank you!
Awesome! Thanks Carol!
Oil over acrylic...just what I was wondering about. I really learned a lot today! Thanks.
Howdy Chuck, just found this tonight and watched it. I have used oil to punch my acrylics before, but you have certainly given me some fresh insight. I will sub you and look forward to watching more from you. God bless, MB
I've watched hundreds. You outshine them all! Amazing talent for both art and teaching! Thanks so much, Chuck!
This is a great tutorial I was wondering how to do this I’m gonna be doing something like that for my son’s 40th birthday thank you for showing me how to do it
It was perfect the way it was, the detail is amazing
Wow, that makes such a difference! I can't wait to try this technique. Thank you! Btw, you are a great teacher!
A screen at the bottom in the rinse can ? That is a great tip that will be very useful as well as many other tips. Thank you Chuck Black Art and Namaste
It's hard to believe that your paintings are done in acrylic. I would think they had to be oil by their detail, sharpness, blending. Wow
I think you have to be a much more advanced artist in order to do this, since you have a limited time with acrylics.
Slow drying mediums work wonders
And he's using oil the whole video?
These paintings WERE done in oil. And, in my book, acrylics are much easier to work with than oils. I'd be more impressed by a tutorial on painting acrylic over oils. It can be done. You just have to let the oil base dry before painting over it with acrylics. That might take a year.
I’m in love with this technique and video!😍💖
Beautiful tutorial and painting! Thank you for demonstrating this technique! What is the process once you are done? How long does this small amount of oil application take before it's dried? Do you spray the painting again with the clear gloss spray once it's dried?
I was tripn about that gas sign the whole time until you broke out the sponge tip... but deep down had faith you had a plan. Lol!!! Love the tutorial!! Everything I wanted to know. Thank you!🎨 Beautiful Painting!!!
Lol thanks Shanna!
freakin awesome vid dude. its great for noobs like me, like u said. i have been watching half of it and drinking a few beers, and then i realized whoa man, i need to watch the rest sober - its that good! so, im stopping for now. good stuff. thanks a bunch for this
A great lesson. I work in acrylics often and will try this on my next work. My question is,if you are entering this painting in a show how would you list your medium?
Usually it is called Oils over Acrylics. If you need to check a box only, use oils (it is valid since almost all modern oil paintings are Oils over acrylics since acrylic gesso used to prime canvas is basically acrylic paint with very low pigment load)
Definitely looks great ... I learned a lot... Thank you
wow ; bravo Chuck very good job ; i am one of your french fan from Québec , Canada ; and many thanks to be there for us ;
Absolutely stunning!!!!
Another great video! Thanks for sharing your knowledge and talent!!
Just amazing, I can't stop watching this video. Thanks for the info on Masonite boards, Chuck. Can you please let us know how to mount canvas on a board? Not trying to steal all your ideas, but you're generous with your gifts and talent--so very appreciated. Never thought of mounting canvas, as you suggest. I'm honored you're so responsive to us wanna-bees:)
Chuck, I paint in oils and recently was introduced to Gamblin Solvent free gel which has all but replaced my linseed oil and odourless thinner (yes, I did it the old fashioned way..lol as I was thought in school) for mixing my paints, and I really love it. My painting dries with a gloss. The only set back to using the gel for mixing that I found is that for covering large spaces on the canvas, not so good as it doesn't spread as fluidly as I would like. But that's okay. I have the drying time to be three days max..so if you're looking for a fast drying medium that will still retain that fresh oil paint gloss, this might be something to consider...
amazing... you are so bright just like your lighs.. thanks for inspiring me...and many more others... xx
Great techniques! I love watching!
Chuck, this is a fantastic painting, and the addition of the oils really makes it "pop". Oils are my main medium, to use, but I work in acrylics, watercolours, and several drawing mediums, too. I've found, when working in acrylics, [or watercolours], that the Speedball water soluble inks, in the tube - the kind used to do screen printing - work great for getting that luminescent/saturated colour, and since they blend with acrylics, being water based, they tend to give the acrylics that "pop" they usually don't have. Being water soluble, they work great with watercolours, too, and will rejuvenate, with the addition of water, after they dry. I discovered this by accident, and have really enjoyed using them ever since.
Thank you and great idea! Very interesting thank you for sharing!
Happy I could offer an interesting idea to you! You offer so much to all that watch your videos, it's good to be able to contribute something. The Speedball inks also work great for glazing, too. Where watercolours would tend to bead up on a surface, the inks tend to cling much better.
That painting is soooooooo darn awesome i truly love it baaaaadddd to the bone !!!!!!!!
You can also use slow drying medium, water and zinc white (and color you want, but include little zinc white) with acrylics. Been trying many things and this works best.
So crazy that you posted this today! I just bought my first set of oils Friday. I would love if you could post a video/give any advice on how you figure out what to paint when you're staring at a blank canvas.
Paint what you love ... a good place to start.
I love your art. I’m painting with acrylics. To add oil to it is a real wow. My question is do you go over the entire painting with oil or just to get the highlights ?
Your detail work is amazing I am definitely going to try this technique ty
So do u try to use mostly transparent colors so u can still see acrylic work u do underneath? Are u using the same color mixes and touching up areas ? If u only do one area in oils wont it stand out bc the colors are richer. Sry I know these are probably stupid questions but I am very new to oils. Trying to figure out what colors and transparency transparency I should purchase on limited budget! Thanks for any input
Love all your paintings!!!!
I LOVE this painting. It feels so homey.
Chuck, please, when you are able, could you do a tutorial on lettering, as in the sign for "gas" in this piece? I would really appreciate it. Thanks so much.
I paint In oils but I'm learning from your videos. I'm thinking of trying my next painting using acryllics first for blocking in and then oils. Out of my comfort zone! I bought similar styling brushes from Hobby Lobby but they are rubber tips not sponges. Thanks for your great videos!
Thank you for the wonderful information.
Love this!
I want some style sticks!
Fabulous painting
Very helpful.
Boy, those Style sticks really *are* impossible to find.
Any hints where I might have a prayer?
Thx
love your work, i am still trying to figure out how you can be saving time when you are painting it twice, can you explain it better, thanks
chuck, i found a da vinci cosmetic classic series eye shadow sponge on amazon to help remove unwanted paint on your paintings. not quiet as pointy as the sponge sticks you use but can take scissors to cut the tip smaller
That's this was so helpful! Silly question...Now when you go to sell this would you have to say it's acrylic/oil on canvas, or if it was completely covered with oil, could you just say it's oil on canvas?
The protective spray is it varnish or exactly what? Thank y also you don’t have to paint the whole painting in oil ?
Chuck, If you cannot find your Style Sticks use Mr. Clean sponges. You can cut them into any shape and they were for all media types. I even put my cut up pieces in a mesh bag and throw them in the washing machine to re-use them.
I’ve an oil painting I did some years ago but never finished! I would like to go back and finish it .
Do I put retouching varnish on first or do something else?
Thanks
Amazing work bro you are the best keep it up
thanks you just made my Christmas present to do.
Thank you so much for this tutorial. I’ve heard about using acrylics and oils but when I would tell my art teachers they never believed me that it was possible. Until now. I’m so happy to see this as I enjoy working with acrylics because they are fast drying. I would like to get back into oils Can I ask what colors are you using for this paintings? Are these the usual colors you use? And what colors would you suggest to start out with? Thank you so much!
❤️❤️❤️learned a lot today!!!
12:12... just tapping it, just tap it, just tap it in, just give it a little tappy tap tap taperoo
This is fantastic painting even before the touch up, do you ever use the open acrylics or do they still not compare to oils.
Thanks for your tutorial. Can I use this method on gouache painting. If yes, do I need to varnish first before using the oil paint? Thanks
Amazing 😍 What varnish do you use when using both acrylic and oils?
Hey Chuck.
I just want to thank you for making such a thorough video with a good explanation on how to make an acrylic painting really POP out with oils.
I've been using only acrylic and have found it a little frustrating how some colours are hard to make pop out. Like red and orange especially.
I've seen some videos try to explain what you just did, but i walk away kind of saying "meh.." to myself.
Your video however just made me go "Holy shit! that's awesome"
So you've just converted my way of thinking with this video, thank you so much for that.
Going out and buying oil paints tomorrow to touch up my acrylic paintings.
Excellent painting
Thanks for all the tips👍
WOW!! JUST WOW!!!
Chuck I could watch you paint all day! I am using oil atop acrylic more and more. Do you also varnish or coat the painting in some way AFTER the oil layer? Or do you leave as is? I have so far not added an extra finish but wonder if it may be wise to add another protective layer,.
fantastic. love this video. i learned so much. Thank you for that.
Do you do acrylic base for "all" your paintings?
Great job. I want to use oils over acrylics to achieve the "glow" of the old masters. A little skitish cause still learning acrylics but starting to experiment with it. Any advice for first time duck stamp attempt?
