These Mini's will be fine for 99% of designers. 9 Years ago I bought 3 Mac Mini's for my business and the only reason I have to upgrade is because Apple is shafting the Intel based Macs due to dropping software support in favour of the new chips (I knew it would happen someday). But I just upgraded them to SSD hard drives and they perform better then new. I use them to design full colour, full size magazines (basically print projects of any size), web design (my main business), edit video, etc. The only thing I haven't done is render 3D animation or edit video longer than a UA-cam video. YES, of course you can push any computer to the limit, but overall, I treat computers like next gen game consoles - you are splitting hairs on speed, get what you can afford. As a business owner, I'd rather get three macs vs one mac!
I totally agree... unless you're working with large format PSB's on Photoshop (banners, signage, etc.) you'll have no problem with the Mac Mini. I'm gonna be honest.. I strongly considered keeping the Mac Mini as a main desktop computer so I won't have to connect my Macbook Pro to my monitor all the time haha. Thanks for the input Scott!
This is one of the most useful comments I’ve seen after looking everywhere to see if I can use a mac mini for design work. I’m only doing a bit of stationary and simple black vector line work designs and all I’ve seen is people saying get the upgrades ram. I’m moving from the 2012 MacBook Pro so I assumed it’d be fine after such a jump up
Finally a proper designer, none of these youtube wannabes think they run machines to the max, contradicting themselves. I'm an illustrator graphic designer/photographer by trade, I also dabble in animation and small web vids if requested. I have the mac mini M1 which just replaced my intel 2020 mac min which i was fed up with the visual glitches because it didn't have enough VRAM and this thing just walks all over it and walks all over the base model mac/MacBook pros. Its smart money spent really, when this thing reaches its end in 3-4 years it will be cheap enough to get another one without worrying about 10k price tag, and i know i won't lose much money n the second-hand market.
Helpful video! ☺️ Planning to buy one soon!! Been watching a bunch of m1 mac mini reviews and yours is the most informative and helpful for me as a web designer. I mainly use Xd, Illustrator and photoshop everyday.
If I wanted to run video editing on a Mac Mini, I would test it to see if my editing software would transcode (from one video file format to another) as quickly as an Intel computer. I've heard that some Adobe titles are not yet "ready for prime time", but this should be seen as a temporary issue. I am surprised that you did not test any non-Adobe software, like Microsoft Office apps, or even Apple's Keynote or Pages. It would be interesting to see what could be done with a Mac Mini as a "creative laboratory experiment", installing software, connecting the Mini up with a good pro-grade or prosumer-grade monitor, speakers, etc., and see how much it costs and how much it could do to handle a business workflow. In for a penny, in for a pound!
FINALLY, i find someone that uses the same software and has the same workflow as me, i'm pretty much doing the same things as you, web dev, graphic design, content creation etc. Thank you so much for doing this video, it was a great help!
@@UnfinishedStudio I'm mainly using a combination of HTML, CSS and JS. Using librearies to make animations etc, or CSS animations. Some projects require a custom wordpress theme so i set it up in PHP. To design it I use XD and Illustrator. Next step is getting myself into react or flutter :D!

For digital designers this computer saves the day!
(Long read ahead) I am a graphic designer with 7+ years of practise design. My MacBook Pro 2017 version died a few days ago. And I need an immediate replacement of a workstation. Will not get into what needs to be repaired of Macbook Pro, but you can estimate that repairing it from official Apple store in my country (🇮🇳) costs around $700 (₹50,000) Oh, and yes, recently I’d setup a BenQ Monitor/Logitech bluetooth keyboard and mouse to pair with my MacBook Pro and make it a mini office desk. I don’t think repairing MB pro would make sense to me, so, do you think I should buy a Mac Mini? If yes, 8GB or 16GB? I run Adobe Photoshop and illustrator all the time. Plus I am planning to learn Premier Pro as well. Or should I go for a Windows desktop. PS: My budget is around $1000 (₹70,000) Sorry for the long read, I do need some professional advice :)
As a broke graphic design student found this video super helpful 😁👍🏼 I use Adobe suite all the time, so i did find relief that Photoshop and Illustrator ran well with the M1 chip. Very curious how inDesign holds up with it too.
If it could handle Photoshop and Illustrator, I'm sure it won't have a problem with InDesign until you get to the category of HUGE graphic projects like posters, billboards, etc.
Get the 16 GB upgrade, will save you a lot of head room after a year of use. I use Ai, PSD, Indesign, XD on Base model and planning on upgrading to 16Gb M2 Variant.
I'm rocking an M1 MBP w/ 16gigs of ram and it's great. The only issue is apps that are emulated on via Rosetta 2, the apps still run, but just not optimally. This is my second rig for when I'm away from my workstation and I can't wait till most of the Adobe Apps become native. I think Photoshop as a Beta version for the M1... thanks for testing it out! Just started the video...

Thanks for the review, I’m surprised that that mini ran that well with such small Ram and HD. I just purchased a MacBook Air M1 with 16GB/1TB and so far it running all my Adobe apps like a champ. I was really concerned because apple and adobe did a horrible job bring the tech together when apple moved from Motorola to Intel - the emulation put the app performance to about 25% and it was about 6 months before adobe ran native... dark times, I almost moved to PC. I can only image how fast the M1 will be running all native apps.

In the next 1-2 years alot of used M1 mac minis will be on ebay... If you want to be among those apprehensive sellers, buy this mac mini m1.
Thank you for this video. I'm building a new system and haven't ordered my M1 Mac Mini yet. I think I'm going to save $200 and buy the base unit with 7 gig of RAM based on your tests. I use Photoshop & Lightroom.
The M1 Mac Mini can totally handle those
Test After effect, please!

Thank you 🕯
Would love to see How Figma runs a full project with animations 👌🏾 definitely want the 16GB of Ram tho
I did try out Figma with animations and it wasn’t a problem at all... I think with Figma being a web-based app it doesn’t need much power from the computer compared to Adobe apps... and by all mean, if you got the dough, upgrade that Ram! Haha
@@UnfinishedStudio Awesome! Thanks a lot, I’m going to trade in my 2014 MacBook Pro for the M1 Mini 😎
u think this baby can handle sketchup and autocad?
Try Adobe Dimension
I was actually going to put that as well.. but for some reason it wouldn’t let me download it... I’ll check it out again
@@UnfinishedStudio Sadly Dimension it's not currently supported on M1 Macs. Hope Adobe does something about this very soon.

2GB file taking this long? So that's a hell no for me.
It's definitely not for everyone... but for someone who may not have as much money but would still want a Mac for design.. then it's an ideal solution
@@UnfinishedStudio I've got a 2015 MacBook Pro i5 with 8GB which has begun struggling since Big Sur. Was looking to upgrade. Just don't see us going anywhere with laptop so thought the M1 Mini would be a good option. Just saw that Adobe has beta's out for Premiere etc. Let's hope AE, Photoshop and Illustrator will follow soon.
@@UnfinishedStudio YEAH I THINK IT WILL BE BOON FOR THEM WHO HAVE NOT SO MUCH MONEY TO BUY MAC PRO OR OTHER COSTLY MAC .
have you tried the Affinity Suite? Designer, Photo and Publisher? Adobe is a dinosaur. Other companies are mammals
all workеd
