Thank you, geat video! I just bought both of these a week ago (first computer purchases in 7 years) so very satisfying to know I was on the right track! Curious about using Luna display to enable headless (or at least untethered) use of Mac mini while at home but not at my desk. Is this realistic now? Very good video. Bought iPad Air4 256gb version and we are very happy with it. Just orderded the M1 Mac Mini 16gb 512gb. Thanks again for the valuable advice, and have a great day!
M1 iPad’s capabilities is worse than underutilized, it’s actually being capped by iPad OS. Believe me, I’m lusting after the 12.9” iPad, but I can wait until the software catches up to the hardware. With that in mind, I’m leaning heavily towards the basic iPad (with 128 GB storage) until then. With the money saved, the Mac Mini looks like it will take up the slack.
@@MarcosElMalo2 yeah I feel ya. We need FCPX and the entire Adobe suite and stuff like that on there with that m1 chip as well as better file management and no ram capping
The problem with the iPad Air is storage. It only makes sense with 64GB. Once you upgrade to 256GB, it's better to get the 11'' iPad Pro with 128GB for $50 more.
That’s the exact setup that I have for my home office :) I’m really happy with the performance of the M1 on the Mac Mini. It hasn’t disappoint and I usually have tons of browser tabs, Powerpoint windows, Excel spreadsheets, Microsoft Outlook, Mail, Slack, Microsoft Teams, Spotify and random apps running all at the same time. And when I need to move around, I’ll grab my iPad Air and continue working as most of the apps that I use daily are cloud-based productivity apps. The Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil are great accessories to ensure that I can still be as productive as when I am at my work desk. I love how everything just works cohesively.
Since you have this setup can you please tell me if you can manage to operate your Mac mini using only the iPad and the Magic Keyboard? Do I need an extra keyboard?

I ended up getting the M1 ipad pro instead of the air 4 simply because it has more storage - 64GB was really low, and once you get the upgraded Air model, the price difference disappears.
I ended up getting a 64GB model air 4, and with LumaFusion now allowing you to work from external drives, I think it’s fine. I use a Samsung T7 to move files between my PC and my iPad, and it works pretty well. I also have 50GB of iCloud storage and mostly just stream all of my media, so it’s working pretty good. However, I’m still on an iPhone 7 with 32GB of storage so I’ve at least got twice the storage of my phone.

Thanks for your information fir a perfect desktop solution. I never considered a mac mini. I have an iPad pro. With the combination of the Mac mini this will solve my issues. This setup will work for a great configuration for my desk. I'm also a IT student. Thanks
With using Side Cart do you need your main monitor to be turned on also? Please tell me i just pick up my ipad any where at home and remote access my Mac mini?!
I have been using an Ipad pro 2020 since last year and I find to be too good but very limited. I'm a programmer but can't code on the Ipad :( I'm happy to have it for video calls, games, Netflix, drawing, creative stuff but can't work on it. The speakers are phenomenal too, I don't need wireless speakers ! All in all the Ipad is very targeted forward creative jobs and basic tech use, I don't recommend for anyone else. The Mac mini seems to be what I need because I already have a keyboard/mouse/screen and replace my PC with it. If in couple of years these new ships can do gaming and the combo ipad + mac mini becomes more relevant I might get one.
I finished with that exact setup. MacMini 16GB, 512GB SSD and base iPad Air 4. Now i need just some AirPods to seamless switching between those two and iPhone :)
@@creeplabs I does not have one and honestly, I do not think those are something special. I do not see too much usage. I do not like notifications on watches, Apple does not support siri in native language, it even does not recognize all contact names correctly, you are forced to set english friendly contact nickname. There is even only one celluar provider with LTE support for Apple Watch and it starts just yesterday. Maybe I will buy used ones for some friendly price later this year after AW7 launch as many users will upgrading they non LTE AW SE/6 for LTE versions which was unavailable on our makret until yesterday. But now Im not prepared to buy AW for its full price.
So for low Purchase Power country like Malaysia, you convinced me to stay for the lower one. I gotta say M1 Ipad is indeed very appealing, but the cost to own one is about 2-3 months of our local minimum wages.
Man, you always confirm my ideas and plan of action for setup upgrades. I love the iPad Air 4 with Magic Keyboard. I am looking into buying a Mac Mini soon and using it along side my work laptop for personal work. Thanks for making my decisions easier!
This sounds like a great setup to me! I am a student and currently rocking an Ipad air gen 3 and very satisfied! It has completely blown my away. What was intended to be a youtube and light web-browsing machine has completely replaced my laptop, notebooks and textbooks. I still use my PC with dual monitors for heavier productivity and study sessions but can easily see a Mac mini replacing my 1500$ PC for what I need. Those ecosystem features like universal control seem sweet.
I'm stuck between whether I should get the 64GB or 256GB for iPad Air 4. I'll mostly be using it for college note-taking, some digital illustrations, procreate, and other post secondary projects. It would be really nice if u were to make a video on this and really break it down. Also, if paying for wifi + cellular would be worth the money? Thanks!
my M1 Mac mini and I are having a difficult time finding a compatibility scanner….what do you do when you need scan old family photos and documents? I am a big fan of all of your videos. I only bought when recommend!
I recently made the switch to this type of setup: Mac mini 16GB RAM Apple Refurbished for $759 and iPad Pro M1 12.9” open box excellent condition at Best Buy for $719. I do not own any laptop. Mac mini will be used for coding or any other heavy task comfortably at a desk and the iPad Pro M1 12.9” for lighter task/read books/ media consumption.
I’ve got just about every Apple device on the market right now via my company and I think honestly, if I had to start from scratch as an average user, based on what I’ve seen, my employees need from a technology perspective, I would go with an M2, MacBook Air, and a iPad mini six. The MacBook can do everything the Mac mini can do, but it can also be a grab and go solution for someone who needs to do more than what an iPad can do and the iPad mini, which I initially thought I would not like, I really enjoy for most of my content consumption and the price and performance is just right.

Is 8 GB sufficient for Office use including Word typing, Safari or chrome tab surfing 20-30 tabs at once and at most 5-6 apps running at same time ? Edit - Talking about Mac Mini
If you are looking at iPad Air4 256G, you can probably also check the base m1 iPad Pro or even the 2020 version, 128G version is just slightly more expensive. Plus better speakers, more RAM and pro motion.
This was probably one of the most thought-provoking and helpful videos for my imminent Apple purchases. Thanks! I'm in the market for both a new iPad as well as a new Mac. I've been waiting for the "M1X" Macbook Pros to come out (thinking about getting the cheapest one of those), but honestly I'm probably not going to use the power. I know about sidecar, but I've never used it. I would be curious to know if the iPads can be used as a monitor for the Mac Mini if there are no other monitors attached. For example, can you take a Mac Mini and an iPad (Air or whatever) to a hotel room and have a working set up? It would also be interesting to see if/how the iPad can be used as an input device, not just another monitor. Can it be used like a Wacom device? I might end up going with an M1 iPad Air and an M1 iPad Pro, but the way of looking at the devices -- and especially the idea of using them together -- that's what this video helped me with. Thanks again!
@@Slashings I got the 14 inch $1999 Macbook Pro. It's very nice. I think I made the right choice. I'll get the 256GB regular iPad to use with sidecar when I'm traveling around.
@@karlint39 There are non Apple secondary screens made for laptops that you can get for $200-300 price range. That is, if you just want/need more than one screen for a laptop... You don't need to buy two of the same thing. There's new tech products and inventions coming out all the time. It's just like having a two screen monitor for desky only for your laptop. I don't remember the exact title, but I believe it connects wirelessly as well. No need to bother with cords or adapters.
I completely agree with your evaluation. Why an external SSD is good? Besides of already explained, you can easily migrate your data between different computers and versions. It is priceless.
Is the ipad air 4 with magic keyboard + m1 mac mini is good enough set up for my work? I worked as a data wrangler in the film industry. I transfer camera data to an external hard drives.
Only problem I see is set up of the Mac Mini which you did not cover. You need to set up a new one with a display, keyboard and mouse when you first get it before you can enable the use of the iPad as a display or headless. Or has something changed?
My best combo? MacBook Air M1 and iPad Pro 11” 2020 MacBook Air M1 at work so I don’t have to use a lousy laptop given… With Office 365 on it. And then iPad Pro 11”. I’d have bought the Air 4 but I’ve bought mine iPad Pro 11” before it was released… What’s the price of your station (screen, Mac Mini)?
I have seen your section on using SIDECAR, with this option will you be able to connect two iPads? It would be very good if you made that video on how to expand the screen by adding an iPad
I just ordered an iPad M1 after buying a Macmini for 3 months. Cost a pretty penny with tons of complaints from my wife :) I have to show her this video :))
For the purpose of using the iPad as a second monitor for my computer - do you have recommend spending a few more bucks to use iPad Pro? Or do you think it'll be completely alright for my normal office work and note taking with an iPad Air 4? I don't game, I don't do graphic designs My budget can cover 256GB iPad Air 4 and 128GB iPad Pro. I imagine I can go for 256GB iPad Air 4, just want to know if I should lose some of the storage to go for better "power" on iPad Pro as a second monitor
Do you have to remove password-protecting the Mac Mini? I can’t figure out how to use the iPad as the only monitor for my Mac Mini in ‘headless’ mode. I tried the Luna Display but it won’t work unless you disable the log-in.
I am a new owner of the iPad, Gen 9, 10.2 (for incredibly cheap price). Looking around at bit, I don't see much difference in the iPad and iPad air. Anyway, this is definitely not worth upgrading my iPad for. So....Does this work only with the Air and not with my basic iPad? Thanks.
You answered my question: "Can as use an iPad as my monitor with the Mac Mini?" (though I will be getting the M2. Apple has moved on.) I am surprised though why you recommend the iPad Air instead of the 12.9" iPad Pro. Just for value? I am used to a 13" laptop screen.
This combo will probably convince me to change from the old Lenovo in the Microsoft world to the Mac Mini used with my old 9.7” iPad Pro, or an update to the iPad Air 4. The size and convenience is a real winner for my computer use on my travels.
This guy knows what he's talking about!! SUBSCRIBED! After spending many hours comparing the pros and cons of various iMac models, and also as a college student who isn't interested in spending 2-3k on upgrading my computer set-up, I also chose these exact two models! I purchased the Ipad air back in November, during the holidays, for about $100 off retail! So basically the pencil was free, right? I just recently picked up an M1 mini due to its cost-effectiveness. My M1 macbook pro is what I bering to class, but it was also what I used at home. Adding the M1 mini has been a game-changer, I think everyone needs a solid desktop set-up, it's not the top-of-the-line iMac but it'll do for now. Great video and great advice!
I have a Mac mini and iPad Air 4 and they work really well together. I do most of my work at my desk with the mini and have the iPad as a second screen where I’ll have things like emails and calendar. I didn’t need the features of the iPad Pro but I went for the 256gb air because 64 is not enough. Even though the step up to iPad Pro isn’t much more, I just didn’t need it the features so its better to have the extra storage and money. I was using a 2012 MacBook Air and needed an upgrade for uni. The Mac mini is perfect for a student, especially last year with so much studying from home, there just wasn’t a need to go for a laptop. Waiting for the new MacBook Air instead, fingers crossed for either a return of MagSafe or a third USBC.
Have you not had any problems with the Mac Mini hub? I find it makes the Mac run hotter, the USB-A ports don't always work and when they do they are super slow to the point that even my USB dongled mouse glitch. Same issues with the USB-C its glitchy to. I haven't used the SD card readers, but I have heard they are glitchy as well. How about for you all?

Just bought this combo and the accessories cannot wait to put it together and try it out
I got the M1 Mac mini 16gb/1tb configuration because besides obvious long-term future-proofing, the onboard SSDs that are 1tb+ have a faster read/write speed than
I subscribed to your channel today after binge watching your videos (especially 6 months later and ten days videos with compressions). Your interactions with viewers are really top level and informations are really useful. And have to say I really like your way of reviewing, you know like "this feature is good but will you be using it as a casual user?" this approach is really useful. Hope to see you with even more viewers and subs.😊
Appreciate you for taking time to leave feedback! Thank you for being part of the channel!
Thanks for the video!!! And yes please, make a video of the iPad as an additional display!!!
@@creeplabs naw Garmin watches are better and battery longer
So for low Purchase Power country like Malaysia, you convinced me to stay for the lower one. I gotta say M1 Ipad is indeed very appealing, but the cost to own one is about 2-3 months of our local minimum wages.
Man, you always confirm my ideas and plan of action for setup upgrades. I love the iPad Air 4 with Magic Keyboard. I am looking into buying a Mac Mini soon and using it along side my work laptop for personal work. Thanks for making my decisions easier!
Great plan. So glad I could help!
I’d recommend getting a MacBook Pro, the price difference isn’t too much and the performance is similar, but you have the ability to travel with it.
Please, tell us more about sidecar! I'm thinking in getting a Mac Mini, and it would help my decision!
You should look into the new universal control function
Still in Beta. Not out yet but will soon with new iPadOS !!
@@texmexmaterial Apple Sidecar was released two years ago.
Definitely interested in a sidecar video
I wish the Mac mini had a battery in it so it can be portable with the ipad
I’m glad you made this video, I was considering this exact setup
Glad I could help!!! It's a great combo. Thank you for being part of the channel.
Can I use the iPad Air to be my Mac Mini's monitor? Thanks. Great videos!!!!
Excellent, think I’m getting those two devices instead of an iMac and using my old keyboard and mouse with my old monitor for the time being.
I’d say go for it. I love the idea of the iMac but it not accepting external video inputs makes it a lot less versatile once you’re done with it.
Your speakers looks neat! can you share the model and if it is possible a review?
Did he forget the iPad mini?? You can use the pencil with it and it’s cheaper so it’s a good option, it’s basically an iPad Air Mini
Chanced upon your video recently. Then it keeps coming up on my feed. I must say you have high quality production videos that gives sound advice to consumers like us who are researching. Subscribed! Thanks for the great job!
Can I use a macmini with an iPad and WITHOUT a monitor at all, INCLUDING powering up and starting up, entering password, ONLY with the iPad?
Just started the video and had to comment.. great voice.
Is it possible to use 2 iPad as dual monitor with Mac mini M1? If so kindly suggest me if any additional accessories required. Thanks
Is 8 GB sufficient for Office use including Word typing, Safari or chrome tab surfing 20-30 tabs at once and at most 5-6 apps running at same time ?
Edit - Talking about Mac Mini
Yes.
If you are looking at iPad Air4 256G, you can probably also check the base m1 iPad Pro or even the 2020 version, 128G version is just slightly more expensive. Plus better speakers, more RAM and pro motion.
Excellent analysis! Fortunate, I have both. Mac Mini and iPad Air 4Gen. Thanks for your wonderful video
Thanks for watching and for being part of the channel!
Excellent question, i want to know tooo
@@Slashings I got the 14 inch $1999 Macbook Pro. It's very nice. I think I made the right choice. I'll get the 256GB regular iPad to use with sidecar when I'm traveling around.
@@karlint39 Cool man! Hope you enjoy your pick ✌️
This is the exact same question I have. Can you use iPad pro as a monitor for the Mac mini?
@@karlint39 There are non Apple secondary screens made for laptops that you can get for $200-300 price range. That is, if you just want/need more than one screen for a laptop... You don't need to buy two of the same thing. There's new tech products and inventions coming out all the time.
It's just like having a two screen monitor for desky only for your laptop. I don't remember the exact title, but I believe it connects wirelessly as well. No need to bother with cords or adapters.
Can you use the iPad (pro Mini) as interface (monitor, touchscreen, keyboard) for the Mac Mini?
I completely agree with your evaluation. Why an external SSD is good? Besides of already explained, you can easily migrate your data between different computers and versions. It is priceless.
Exactly my combo xD 8gb mac mini 256, iPad air 4 256 and iphone 12 mini 64
NICE!!!
Can you help answer. If I go with this set up as a website designer mainly would the iPad work like a laptop ? As iOS can get tricky
Hi, can u suggest me how to use 2 iPad with Mac mini and accessories need for it. Thanks in advance
“buy it nice, or buy it twice” that definitely made me to subscribe lmao
“Buy it nice or buy it twice” nice!
this pairing has a REAL use with sidecar for portability… surprised it was nowhere to be found in this.
So can I get a MacMini and use an iPad as its monitor? Either with or without a wire?
Is this combo going to work for those who looking to livestream on UA-cam?
The New PERFECT COMBO: M2 Mac Mini Pro w32 GB ram, and an Ipad Pro M1. (at least until next week when Apple will probably release the M2 mac mini)
My best combo?
MacBook Air M1 and iPad Pro 11” 2020
MacBook Air M1 at work so I don’t have to use a lousy laptop given… With Office 365 on it.
And then iPad Pro 11”. I’d have bought the Air 4 but I’ve bought mine iPad Pro 11” before it was released…
What’s the price of your station (screen, Mac Mini)?
would like to see how you hooked it up to ipad.
Is the mac mini and the iPad good for photo and video 4k editing?.
I want to know how to use the sidecar between a Mac Mini and an iPad Pro. Please!!!
Great content 😮😊
I have the Mac mini but I have the iPad Pro and I use my Luna Display and it becomes very portable and user friendly
Is this good combo for a student and also that wants to play the sims?
Another fantastic video thanks again
For the purpose of using the iPad as a second monitor for my computer - do you have recommend spending a few more bucks to use iPad Pro? Or do you think it'll be completely alright for my normal office work and note taking with an iPad Air 4?
I don't game, I don't do graphic designs
My budget can cover 256GB iPad Air 4 and 128GB iPad Pro.
Thanks.
Which keyboard are you using with mac mini. It looks so sleek. Reply would be greatly appreciated.
You answered my question: "Can as use an iPad as my monitor with the Mac Mini?" (though I will be getting the M2. Apple has moved on.)
I am surprised though why you recommend the iPad Air instead of the 12.9" iPad Pro. Just for value? I am used to a 13" laptop screen.
Yes - it was a good value. Of course a larger display is great if it’s in the budget.
Excellent advice that I need! 😃 Thanks for the video!
This combo will probably convince me to change from the old Lenovo in the Microsoft world to the Mac Mini used with my old 9.7” iPad Pro, or an update to the iPad Air 4. The size and convenience is a real winner for my computer use on my travels.
That’s exactly what I changed from
Did you do the MacBook +ipad and the monitor with the macmini too?
What model are the white speakers?
I appreciate you watching and sharing your experience and perspective with the community 🙏🏻. Sounds like you have a great setup!!!
Can you make a video of macbook air and ipad 8th generation combo use cases for students
Great video! I can vouch for the IPad Air 4, don’t have the Mac mini yet. And yeah do a sidecar video, that would be interesting and helpful. Thx!
FULLY AGREE WITH YOU MAN
Kindly make a video on side car, I would love to watch it!!
Can the iPad be used as the main display wirelessly?
Have you not had any problems with the Mac Mini hub? I find it makes the Mac run hotter, the USB-A ports don't always work and when they do they are super slow to the point that even my USB dongled mouse glitch. Same issues with the USB-C its glitchy to. I haven't used the SD card readers, but I have heard they are glitchy as well. How about for you all?
Wow what was that stack of monitors … lovely idea and setup … thanks for showing that… like your videos thanks
This video was amazing thank you so much
